A recent study by Global Witness warns that emissions from major oil and gas companies could lead to 11.5 million extra deaths from heat-related causes by 2100.

What do the numbers say?

The analysis focussed on top players like Shell, BP, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, and Chevron. It estimates a staggering 11.5 million excess heat deaths by the end of the century due to their emissions up to 2050.

A call to action

Sarah Biermann Becker from Global Witness emphasises the urgency, stating that even a slight temperature rise could prove lethal. Governments must intervene to steer the transition away from fossil fuels.

“Every 0.1C of warming will be lethal. Unless the supermajors change course quickly, the death toll will be comparable to some of history’s most brutal wars. We cannot leave it up to them. Governments need to step in, mitigate the impact of extreme heat, and urgently ramp up the transition away from fossil fuels,” the senior investigator at Global Witness told The Guardian.

How did the study derive this conclusion?

The study relied on the mortality cost of the carbon model developed by Columbia University. It predicts 226 excess heat deaths per million tonnes of carbon released. This model is also used by organisations such as Oxfam.

The study revealed that even if we achieve net zero carbon emissions globally by 2050, the company's production will still cause 5.5 million excess deaths.

How high the stakes are?

If no immediate action is taken to curb emissions, the consequences could be dire. Intense heatwaves have already claimed lives worldwide, with vulnerable populations being hit the hardest.

Environmental economist Shouro Dasgupta told The Guardian, “We’re already seeing the impacts of heat stress on workers around the world, particularly on people in outdoor or heavy-duty industries.

“This will likely get much worse as the planet continues to heat up. We need labour protection policies that are tailored to local needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. This isn’t just a moral question – it’s also in the economic interests of employers to provide adequate protection for their workers,” he added.

Transitioning away from fossil fuels isn't just about preventing heat-related fatalities. It's also crucial for averting other disasters like food shortages, flooding, and economic instability.

While some oil giants like BP and Shell have pledged to invest in renewable energy, they continue to pursue new oil projects. Critics argue that more decisive action is needed to combat climate change.

Brazil on high alert due to heatwave

The El Nino weather pattern has commenced its weakening phase but is anticipated to continue influencing above-average temperatures worldwide, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Tuesday (March 5).

El Nino, a naturally occurring phenomenon linked to disrupted wind patterns resulting in warmer ocean surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific, typically occurs every two to seven years.

Lasting approximately nine to 12 months, El Nino often triggers extreme weather events such as wildfires, tropical cyclones, and prolonged droughts.

WMO spokesperson Claire Nullis stated that El Nino reached its peak in December, ranking among the five strongest occurrences in history. While gradually diminishing, it is expected to impact global climate in the upcoming months, leading to above-normal temperatures from March to May in most land areas.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo noted that El Nino had played a role in recent temperature records. Since June 2023, every month has set new temperature records, making 2023 the warmest year on record. Saulo emphasised that while El Nino contributed to these elevated temperatures, the primary culprit remains heat-trapping greenhouse gases.

The WMO indicated a 60 per cent likelihood of El Nino persisting from March to May, with an 80 per cent chance of neutral conditions (neither El Nino nor La Nina) from April to June. There is a possibility of La Nina, characterised by unusually cold Pacific Ocean temperatures, emerging later in the year, though the odds remain uncertain, as per the WMO.

El Nino predicted to cause unprecedented heat across Amazon to Alaska in 2024

A study released on Wednesday (Feb 28) suggests that the North Pacific humpback whale population has experienced a drastic 20 per cent decline in less than a decade, with marine heatwaves identified as the potential primary cause, signaling a concerning future for these majestic sea creatures.

Following successful conservation efforts and the cessation of commercial whaling in 1976, the humpback whale population in the region steadily increased until 2012.

However, over the past 10 years, researchers reported a sharp decline in whale numbers, as published in the Royal Society Open Science journal.

A team of 75 scientists utilised the largest photo-identification dataset ever compiled for a large marine mammal, spanning from 2002 to 2021, to track North Pacific humpback populations.

Using images of the unique tail patterns of the whales, the team recorded over 200,000 sightings of more than 33,000 individuals.

Contrary to expectations that the humpback population would stabilise at its natural carrying capacity, there was instead a significant and steep decline observed from 2012 to 2021.

The number of humpbacks fell by 20 per cent, dropping from approximately 33,000 individuals to just over 26,600.

For a subgroup of whales wintering in Hawaii, the decline was even more pronounced at 34 per cent.

A critical factor identified was the occurrence of the strongest and longest marine heatwave on record from 2014 to 2016, affecting the Pacific northeast with temperature anomalies surpassing three to six degrees Celsius.

This heatwave altered the marine ecosystem and the availability of humpback prey, leading to a more severe decline than anticipated.

Study author Ted Cheeseman, a whale biologist and PhD student at Southern Cross University in New South Wales, expressed surprise at the scale of the decline, estimating that around 7,000 whales likely starved to death during this period.

The scientists hypothesise that the extreme marine heatwave may have reduced the carrying capacity threshold for humpbacks, causing a collapse in their population dynamics.

The inability of humpbacks to adapt their flexible diet is seen as an indicator of broader ocean health issues, affecting not only the whales but also other marine species.

The study emphasises that a warmer ocean produces less food, impacting not only humpback whales but also contributing to declines in the populations of tufted puffins, sea lions, seals, and affecting some commercial fisheries.

Heatwave warnings were issued in large parts of Australia on Sunday (Dec 24) amid scorching temperatures. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, authorities warned of a high bushfire risk in many parts of the Western Australia state. The weather forecaster issued heatwave alerts for the western state, the Northern Territory, and the eastern Queensland state, warning temperatures in some regions could hit around 45 degrees Celsius. Data from the weather forecaster showed that in Western Australia's capital city of Perth, a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius was forecast for Sunday, more than five degrees above the December mean. Over 20 bushfire warnings issued in Western Australia More than 20 bushfire warnings were issued in Western Australia including an uncontrolled one near Pemberton, a town of around 5,000 residents. Citing a statement from the state's Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Reuters reported that more difficult weather was expected from Sunday afternoon as hot, dry, and windy conditions hit a large section of Western Australia, including Perth. "Weather conditions over the next few days will put pressure on containment lines and potentially increase fire activity," the statement added. The agency also warned of a high fire danger for many areas of Western Australia and said more than 1,000 firefighters had been fighting blazes statewide over the past five days. Australia's east scorched due to El Nino Reuters further reported on Sunday that the eastern part of Australia was this month scorched due to El Nino, a climate pattern in which unusually warm Pacific Ocean temperatures cause heatwaves, cyclones, droughts, and wildfires. Earlier in December, a heatwave warning affected areas in every state and territory, except for Tasmania. (With inputs from agencies)

Hot autumn weather is forecast to extend across European countries in October. After their hottest September on record. According to weather experts, this year is likely to be the warmest in human history as a strong heat dome will re-develop into Western Europe, with a new heatwave for countries underneath.

It had been anticipated for a few months but it looks almost certain that Europe might run out of local olive oil supplies and face frequent shortages. The extreme heatwave across Europe, especially the Mediterranean has damaged harvests for the second year in a row. According to a Guardian report, Europe, the world's largest producer of olive oil has been forced to rely on South America to plug the gap by importing supplies. “Today it is almost physically impossible to buy olive oil. It is sold out,” Walter Zanre, the chief executive of the UK arm of Filippo Berio. Spain, which produces about half of the global olive oil crop, only harvested 750,000 tonnes, more than the 660,000 produced last year but well short of the 1.3 million tonnes target. Consequently, the global production is expected to fall to 2.4 million tonnes. Last year's global demand stood at three million tonnes and it looks highly unlikely that production will reach that level. In Pics | Top nutritionist reveals names of superfoods you need to add to your diet in 2023 Apart from Spain, other important olive oil-growing regions such as Greece, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Morocco were also hit by extreme weather conditions, affecting the crops. Italy had been planning to produce 350,000 tonnes of olive oil this year but drought and recent hailstorms in the major producing area of Puglia have shattered any such hopes. Meanwhile, Greece is expected to produce only 200,000 tonnes this year which is a third less than last year as fruit fly infestations, in addition to the heatwave cause problems for the farmers. Prices start to rise “We have been saddled with another difficult year. During the early part of the summer we thought things might get better but as the summer has progressed things have got worse," added Zanre. “We’re looking at production rates being cut by half this year. The imbalance in demand and supply has already led to very big price increases, which producers are enjoying but which are very much hurting consumers. Watch | Olive oil demand surges in West Asia × The fear of shortage has already hit the supermarkets. The cost of extra virgin olive oil in southern Spain has shot up to €8.45 per kg this month which is double the price of last year and the highest it has been in the last two decades. Meanwhile, in the UK analysts at Associa remarked that retail prices of olive oil at major supermarkets have climbed 47 per cent in recent weeks. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Australia is currently battling an intense heatwave that has prompted the danger of a bushfire disaster. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday (September 20), danger warnings have been issued for the Greater Sydney region, which is home to more than five million people. In its latest update, the NSW Rural Fire Services said over 600 firefighters and emergency personnel were battling to control 68 fires burning across New South Wales (NSW) state as of Wednesday morning. "With hot, dry and windy conditions forecast throughout the day, the Greater Sydney Region ... will experience extreme fire danger, while several other areas will experience high fire danger," the update said. Total fire ban in large swathes of NSW Total fire bans are in place in large swathes of New South Wales. Reuters reported that on Tuesday, residents of a popular holiday town in Tasmania were told to move to a safer location due to an uncontrolled bushfire fuelled by strong wind gusts. Meanwhile, fire crews rushed to conduct hazard-reduction burns in Sydney's west to prepare for the looming bushfire season, which authorities said could be the worst since the 2019-2020 'Black Summer' fires. During this disaster, around 15,000 separate fires burned across Australia, according to a report by the BBC. Greg Mullins, a former fire brigade chief, who repeatedly warned authorities about the Black Summer fires but got no positive response, told the BBC that governments have acted on calls to improve the equipment available to firefighters - the aerial firefighting fleet in particular. However, the report said that fuel management is another story, and one increasingly out of human control. Despite the scale of Black Summer, there are still dense swathes of bushland - for example surrounding the Sydney basin - which were left largely untouched. In a Facebook post on Sunday, it said: "A reprieve from the heat is not expected until Wednesday onwards, as a stronger cold front crosses the southeastern states."

On Sunday, the scorching heat reportedly took a toll on participants in the Sydney marathon, where 26 people were taken to the hospital and approximately 40 treated for heat exhaustion by emergency services.

Threat of wildfires

The heat wave, as per the news agency report, has also heightened the risk of wildfires, with several regions assigned 'high' fire danger ratings.

Even as about 50 grass or bushfires burn across New South Wales, authorities have urged residents to prepare for further bushfires. The current bushfires, as per the report, have been brought under control.

Australia faces 'uncommon' heatwave, temperatures predicted to rise 16 degrees above normal

The United Kingdom has set a new record for consecutive days of scorching September temperatures, with the mercury reaching at least 30°C (86°F) for four days in a row. On Thursday (September 7), a reading of 30.2°C was recorded in Northolt, west London, surpassing the previous September record of three consecutive days, which occurred in 1898, 1906, 1911, and 2016.

Potential hottest day of the year

The UK Met Office reported that Thursday (September 7) could potentially become the hottest day of the year so far, with a provisional recording of 32.6°C in Wisley, Surrey.

If confirmed, this would surpass the previous high of 32.2°C registered on two days in June in Chertsey, Surrey, and Coningsby, Lincolnshire.

Other locations also reported temperatures exceeding 30°C on Thursday, and the south-east of England is expected to experience temperatures of up to 33°C on Saturday (September 9).

Heatwave continues into the weekend

The heatwave is predicted to persist into Friday (September 8) and potentially extend through the weekend, particularly in the south-east of England, with temperatures gradually shifting further towards this region.

Sunday (September 10) may see temperatures reach 31°C in the south-east. However, the north and west of the UK will experience cooler weather, as reported by the BBC.

While this week has seen record-breaking heat, there is an increasing chance of thundery showers in the north and west over the weekend as winds shift to a south-westerly direction, bringing cooler and fresher air from the Atlantic. Temperatures are expected to decrease in the following week.

South Korea's World Scout Jamboree is now set to end early because of an approaching typhoon, said organisers on Monday (August 7), as they appealed to the government to provide help “urgently” with efforts being made to send tens of thousands of children home.

Around 43,000 people participated in the jamboree which started in North Jeolla province last week. However, hundreds of scouts fell ill because of an extreme heatwave which forced Seoul to provide air-conditioned buses and deploy military doctors. The government vowed an all-out effort to salvage the event.

American and British scout groups withdraw

Over the weekend, American and British scout groups withdrew citing concerns over the extreme weather as the organisers stated that the jamboree would continue appealing to participants to see it as a "platform for overcoming challenges".

However, with the forecast of a typhoon ahead which is likely to hit most of South Korea, which includes the campsite, the Jamboree was forced to end early.

"The World Organisation of the Scout Movement received confirmation this morning from the Government of the Republic of Korea that due to the expected impact of Typhoon Khanun, an early departure will be planned for all participants," said the scout body, in a statement.

"We urgently call on the Government to expedite the plan for departure and provide all necessary resources and support for participants during their stay and until they return to their home countries," the scout body added.

No details were shared where the participants of the event will stay until they return home. On Monday, South Korea's presidential office said that President Yoon Suk Yeol was informed about the contingency plan for the Jamboree in the wake of the typhoon approaching, hinting that the scouts are likely to stay in Seoul for the remainder of their stay.

"By 'contingency plan', it means the scouts' accommodation and the remaining schedule can be moved to the metropolitan area including Seoul," said Yoon's office, in a statement.

It was reported by the Yonhap news agency that all afternoon activities were cancelled and the participants will start leaving the campsite on Tuesday morning.

A moment of national disgrace?

This week, the highest-level hot weather warning was issued by South Korea. The exit of British, American and other scout troops has been a setback for the government of South Korea which on Friday held an emergency cabinet meeting and mobilised aid.

The presidential office sanctioned 6.9 billion won ($5.3 million) in spending for supporting the jamboree, and Yoon also held telephonic conversations with camp organisers, appealing to them to offer more tourism programmes to the scouts.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said that the organisers would "create and operate a tour program featuring South Korea's industry, culture, history, and nature". However, the situation has been described by the local media as a “national disgrace”, considering the time the country had to make preparations for the global event, which takes place once every four years.
