The US state of California is once again battling major wildfires as hot, sultry, and windy conditions continue to make rescue operations tougher. Reportedly, two people died on Monday after a wildfire broke out in the southern part of the state. The fire, nicknamed Fairview Fire started on Monday, shortly after 2 PM, and rapidly grew from there. According to reports, the fire had spread to an area of over 2,000 acres, engulfing the city of Hemet. WATCH | WION Climate Tracker: Rapid wildfire spreads in California, 2 dead × Over 5000 homes have been evacuated as the emergency rescue workers work around the clock to minimise damage to life and property. However, only five per cent of the fire had been contained so far. "All these fires now have receptive fuel beds to burn. Now, when anything gets started it has that potential for exponential growth in a short period of time just because everything is so tinder dry." California Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie was quoted as saying by CNN. In pics| California wildfire continues to wreak havoc Last month it was the McKinney wildfire that wreaked havoc across the state. Reportedly, four people were killed in the blaze and thousands were displaced. According to local news reports, families of the victims have sued an Oregon-based utility company providing power in the northern part of the state for sparking the fire. "There's nothing anyone has seen that would lead us to believe that the McKinney Fire started with anything other than power lines." an attorney representing the families stated. It is official. The southwest region of England is suffering from drought as extreme heatwave conditions across the country broke 90-year-old records, according to the Environment Agency. Reportedly, Bristol, Somerset, Dorset, South Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire in the Wessex area have been given drought status. The announcement comes on the heels of the National Drought Group, earlier this month pushing Kent, South London, North London, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Devon, Cornwall, Solent, South Downs, Herts, East Anglia, Thames, and the East Midlands into the list of regions enduring drought-like conditions. Read more: Amid heatwave, UK declares drought across eight areas of England For a country notorious for its inclement rainy weather, England has received below-average rainfall across all geographic regions, leading to rivers running dry as groundwater and reservoir levels plummet. According to the Environment Agency, moving Wessex into the list was majorly due to this reason. "Despite some heavy rain over the past two weeks, it has not been enough to refill our rivers and aquifers. River levels across our Wessex area are exceptionally low – many showing the lowest flows on record," said the agency in a statement. A new study predicts that if climate change worsens, much of the world will likely experience what is officially referred to as "hazardous heat" at least three times more frequently.

According to a study published on Monday in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, soaring temperatures and humidity that feel like 39.4 degrees Celsius or higher in many of Earth's wealthy mid-latitudes should occur 20 to 50 times annually by the middle of the next century. Currently an occasional summer shock.

As per the study's lead author, in regions like the U.S. Southeast, that oppressive heat index may last for the majority of the summer by 2100.

Furthermore, the sticky tropics are far worse. According to the study, by the end of the century, a tropical belt that encompasses India will likely be hit one to four weeks each year by heat waves that are currently regarded "very dangerous," or when the feels-like heat index exceeds 51 degrees Celsius.

“So that’s kind of the scary thing about this,” said study author Lucas Zeppetello, a Harvard climate scientist. “That’s something where potentially billions of people are going to be exposed to extremely dangerous levels of heat very regularly. So something that's gone from virtually never happening before will go to something that is happening every year.”

Zeppetello and colleagues examined the likelihood of two distinct heat index thresholds—103 degrees (39.4 Celsius) and above 124 degrees (51 Celsius), which the U.S. National Weather Service classifies as dangerous and extremely dangerous—using more than 1,000 computer simulations. They made calculations for the years 2050 and 2100 and compared those to the number of times that heat occurred annually worldwide between 1979 and 1998.

Even in the improbable best-case scenario of global warming confined to only 3.6 degrees (2 degrees Celsius) since pre-industrial times — the less rigorous of two international targets — the study revealed a three- to ten-fold rise in 103-degree heat in the mid-latitudes.

According to the analysis, there is just a 5% possibility that warming will be that minimal and infrequent. The report predicts that by 2100, the tropics will be steaming at 103 degrees Fahrenheit "during most days of each normal year."

From 1979 through 1998, Chicago had that 103 degree heat index just four times. By the end of the century, though, the study's most likely scenario predicts that Chicago will experience that hot and sticky threshold 11 times a year.

According to Zeppetello, who conducted a large portion of the research at the University of Washington State during the warming-driven 2021 heat wave, heat waves are one of the new four horsemen of the apocalyptic climate change. The others are sea level rise, water scarcity, and changes in the overall ecosystem.

In contrast to other climate research that examines what happens at varying amounts of carbon pollution, this study is based on mathematical probability. Michael Mann, a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, is now more dubious of this study as a result. He added that it disregards recent Australian initiatives as well as historic climate legislation approved by President Joe Biden of the United States earlier this month.

'Severe' heatwave conditions in China threaten to destroy autumn harvest

A severe drought in Texas that dried up a river has uncovered dinosaur tracks from around 113 million years at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, southwest of Dallas, officials have said.

Officials said that the Paluxy River that runs through the park dried up in several areas exposing the tracks. It is usually underwater and commonly filled with sediment, rendering them invisible when the river is full of water.

“Due to the excessive drought conditions this past summer, the river dried up completely in most locations, allowing for more tracks to be uncovered here in the park," Stephanie Salinas Garcia of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department told AFP, adding that dry weather has made the tracks visible.

"Under normal river conditions, these newer tracks are underwater and are commonly filled in with sediment, making them buried and not as visible," she added.

According to reports, the tracks were made by Acrocanthosaurus, which weighed nearly seven tons (6,350 kilograms) as an adult and stood 15 feet (4.5 meters) tall. And another dinosaur, Sauroposeidon, which measured 60 feet tall and weighed 44 tons in adulthood.

The park was once on the edge of an ancient ocean, and dinosaurs left footprints in the mud, according to its website.

However, the exciting discovery is not expected to last long as the rain is in the forecast. Therefore, the recently discovered tracks will be covered underwater once more.

China has issued its first national drought alert of this year as the country battles scorching temperatures and a heat wave. China has also warned dry spell to last till September.

WION Climate Tracker: China battles scorching temperatures and heat wave

Chengdu, provincial capital of China's Sichuan province, has decided to dim outdoor advertisements, subway lightings and building signs to save energy amid a record heatwave. The temperature has crossed 40 degrees Celsius mark (104 Fahrenheit) this week. This has resulted in a massive demand for air conditioning. This in turn is drying up reservoirs. The province relies on dams for most of its electricity demand.

These steps taken to save power have started affecting factories. A joint venture with Japanese car giant Toyota has been forced to stop work. Millions of residents in Dazhou city are facing power cuts.

"Hot and muggy weather has caused the city's electricity supply for production and daily life to be pushed to its limit," Chengdu's urban management authorities said in a notice on social media Thursday.

The statement said that Chengdu was facing 'most severe situation' and that outdoor landscape illumination and advertisements have been ordered to be switched off.

The Chengdu metro said in a video on China's Twitter-like platform Weibo that it would also turn off advertisement lights and "optimise" the temperature in stations to save energy.

Photos were shared on Weibo of dimmed lights on metro platforms, in malls and on walkways. Commuters could be seen walking in partial darkness.

The searing heat is also drying up the critical Yangtze River, with water flow on its main trunk about 50 percent lower than the average over the last five years, state media outlet China News Service reported Thursday.

According to data from China's Meteorological Administration, temperatures in the province, which is home to about 84 million people, have been averaging above 40 to 42 degrees Celsius since last week, driving up demand for air conditioning.

The area depends on dams to produce 80% of its electricity, but last summer, rivers in the area dried up, according to Beijing's water resources ministry.

As reported by the Guardian, the province in southwest China generates half of the country's lithium, which is used in electric vehicle batteries, and its hydropower projects power industrial hubs along the nation's east coast.

China limits electricity to factories as heatwave drives up demand

Warning of an impending heat risk, a new study has claimed that an "extreme heat belt" is forming in the north of Chicago that could affect more than 100 million people in the next 30 years

The research, which was released on Monday by nonprofit First Street Foundation, said that this "heat belt" could encompass the America's heartland stretching from Texas and Louisiana north to the Great Lakes, reports AFP.

They said this could shoot up the heat index up to 125 Fahrenheit (52C) at least one day per year by 2053, affecting 107 million people in 2053.

The heat index is commonly referred to as the “feels like” temperature. It represents what the outside temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity and air temperature are combined.

"These increases in local temperatures result in significant implications for communities that are not acclimated to warmer weather relative to their normal climate," the report said.

The biggest shift in the local temperature has been predicted to occur in Miami-Dade County, Florida, where the current hottest temperature touches 103 Fahrenheit seven days per year. The number is expected to increase to 34 days at 103 degrees by 2053, according to the study.

The report further warned that the increase in the use of air conditioning as a result of such temperature spikes will further strain energy grids, leading to more frequent and longer lasting brownouts.

The findings came days after the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s monthly climate reporton August 8 found that last month was the country’s third-hottest July since record-keeping began nearly 130 years ago.

The water level in the Rhine River, a key shipping route in Germany and Europe, has fallen to a record low due to the ongoing drought, causing huge disruption to the shipping industry with some vessels unable to sail.

A lack of rain combined with an unrelenting heatwave has led to "exceptionally low" water in some areas of Germany’s most important inland waterway.

Officials have warned that the crisis would further compound in the upcoming days with the water level in the Kaub, a common reference point in the Rhine, predicted to drop as low as 35 centimetres on August 15, according to estimates by the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration on Friday.

Most barges require water levels above 40 cm to travel.

On Friday, container logistics service company Contargo said that it would discontinue its barge operations on the Middle and upper Rhine river, transporting what goods it could overground to its terminals on the Lower Rhine, reports Reuters news agency.

"Due to the difficult situation we regretfully have to point out that we can no longer guarantee to meet all deadlines," it said in a statement.

The Deutsche Bank economists said the situation is reminiscent of 2018 when a similar problem with the river led to a "standstill of freight shipping" and reduced German economic growth by an estimated 0.2 per cent.
