What the future holds for our warming world

Climate change drove heat in the Indian city of Ahmedabad to a record-breaking 48 Degrees Celsius in 2016. Here's how heat insurance is offering climate change lifeline to poor workers.

Heat insurance, a lifeline for poor workers

The United Kingdom is prepared for unprecedented heat wave conditions as meteorologists predict that the arrival of the African Plume would result in "record-breaking" temperatures. According to the weather graphs, this high-pressure system is swiftly approaching the country and will cause severe conditions within the UK by the end of May, with temperatures reaching as high as 35 degrees Celsius, according to a report in the Independent.

The African Plume is a meteorological phenomenon characterised by a mass of hot air moving from the Sahara desert to Europe. The plume causes a lengthy period of exceptionally high temperatures, typically exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in the UK. Extremely high temperatures may last for days or weeks. Furthermore, the intensity can vary each year, depending on the atmospheric conditions.

"During an African plume event, southerly or southeasterly winds carry the hot and dry air across the Mediterranean Sea towards the British Isles. As the air mass moves over the warm waters of the Mediterranean, it absorbs heat and moisture, further intensifying its warmth and humidity," the outlet said.

Despite the fact that various factors may influence weather patterns, researchers believe that the growing frequency of African plumes is compatible with climate change and a warming Earth. According to Met Office meteorologist Honour Criswick, there is "a greater than normal chance" of heatwaves this summer in the UK. This is "consistent with our warming climate." "As with any longer-term forecast, there is some uncertainty," she noted.

As per the report, Scotland and Northern Ireland could expect largely overcast sky with raindrops moving southeast on Saturday. "A brisk breeze may bring cooler temperatures to the far southeast." Most of the UK will enjoy fine and dry weather next week, with intervals of cloud and rain more probable in the northwest. Heat in Vietnam scorches previous record

Vietnam's northern and central regions are experiencing a heat wave, which has caused temperatures in some locations to reach a record 44.1 degrees Celsius.

Low pressure advancing from the west and the Foehn effect are the reasons for the extreme temperatures over the past three days. The Fohn effect is a meteorological change from wet and cold conditions on one side of a mountain to warmer and drier conditions on the other side. There have been 39 to 43-degree temperature readings in about 15 different places.

Vietnam heatwave: Nation reports record high temperatures of 44.1 degrees

Record-breaking heatwaves in India last year put 90% of the population at increased risk of going hungry, losing income, or premature death, says a shocking study.

Rising heatwave imperil India's development goals: Study

The Northern hemisphere is experiencing contrasting climatic conditions. While Europe is baking due to sizzling heat, the American mid-West is experiencing unnaturally chilly weather for April. The stark difference is affecting wildlife and humans alike. Spain's citizens are sweating under the heat, whereas migratory birds in America are freezing in mid-air and dropping out of the sky.

Thailand is facing unprecedented levels of heat. This comes amid the country battling a drastic increase in respiratory problems triggered by a spike in air pollution. Since the beginning of 2023, 2.4 million people needed treatment for medical problems due to air pollution, as per health officials. This includes nearly 200,000 in the last week alone.

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), in its report, said that temperatures have increased across Europe in the last few years and the heatwaves have resulted in 15,700 deaths across the continent in 2022.

The report emphasised that Europe was affected by record-breaking heat waves in the summer and extreme heat was accompanied by dry conditions in some areas. The death toll due to heatwave exceeded 15,000 across the UK, Portugal, France, Spain and Germany.

The WMO report titled “State of the Global Climate in 2022” was released on World Earth Day which is marked on April 22 every year. WMO is the United Nations (UN) agency for climate, water and weather.

Past eight years hottest in history: report

In the report, the UN noted that the past eight years were the hottest in record history. It added that one million species are currently facing the risk of extinction as the world's biodiversity is threatened by climate change.

The WMO report further emphasised that increasing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are causing damaging environmental changes.

"WMO latest State of the Global Climate report shows that the last eight years were the eight warmest on record, and that sea level rise and ocean warming hit new highs. Record levels of greenhouse gases caused 'planetary scale changes on land, in the ocean and in the atmosphere'," stated the UN in a release.

Glaciers melting at dramatic speed

Emphasising the melting glaciers, the WMO stated, “Antarctic sea ice fell to its lowest extent on record and the melting of some European glaciers was, literally, off the charts.”

The glaciers of the world lost their thickness by more than 1.3 metres between October 2021 and October 2022, which is much larger compared to the average decrease over the last decade. Since 1970, the cumulative thickness of glaciers lost is around 30 metres.

The report stated that there has been a record increase in sea levels by an average of 4.62 millimetres every year between 2013 and 2022, which is double the speed at which it was increasing between 1993 and 2002.

The UN said that record high temperatures were also recorded in the oceans where almost 90 per cent of the heat, which remains trapped on Earth due to the greenhouse gases, finally ends up.

Climate change impacting people's health

Due to climate change, the report stated that the health of European people has been impacted in several ways, including illness and death due to the increased frequency of extreme weather conditions.

The report has suggested that there can be an increase in zoonoses, where the transmission of disease takes place from animals to humans, along with water, food and vector-borne diseases, as well a rise in cases of mental health disorders.

World Earth Day | Temperature rising in Europe, 15,700 deaths due to heatwave in 2022, says UN

The world could breach a new average temperature record in 2023 or 2024, fuelled by climate change and the anticipated return of the El Nino weather phenomenon, climate scientists say. Watch this to find out more.

World could face record temperatures in 2023 or 2024 as El Nino returns

Its summer season in India and temperatures across the subcontinent are on the rise sparking concerns of heatwaves and blackouts. The Indian meteorological department has issued a heat wave alert for multiple states since temperatures crossed 40 Degree Celsius in parts of northern India.

Heatwave alert for several Indian states

Many regions in India have been experiencing scorching heatwave conditions in the past few days, with officials issuing warnings for the coming days. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert amid high temperatures in three Indian states—West Bengal, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.

In a press release on Tuesday (April 17), IMD noted that maximum temperatures were in the range of 40-42°C over many parts of the plains of Northwest India, Central and East India and 35-40°C over many parts of the rest of the country except over Western Himalayan Region (22-25°C) and islands (30-34°C). Maximum temperatures were above normal by 3-5°C over many parts of East and Northeast India.

Heatwave: The weather department stated that the heat wave conditions are prevailing in isolated pockets over Gangetic West Bengal for the last six days, coastal Andhra Pradesh for the last four days and Bihar for the last three days.

As per the report, Northwest India is expected to witness a rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C during the next three days and there will be a gradual fall by 2-4°C during the subsequent two days and a rise by 2-4°C thereafter. Meanwhile, the heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh on April 18, and East Uttar Pradesh on April 18 and April 19.

In East India, no significant change in the maximum temperatures is expected in the next five days. On the other hand, the southern part will see a rise in maximum temperatures by about 2°C (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) in the next five days.

Rainfall: The weather department also predicted that light or moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms is very likely over Western Himalayan Region during the next five days and isolated to scattered rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi and Rajasthan from April 18 to 20.

The warnings were issued after a report emerged that at least 13 people died at a Maharashtra government event while being exposed to the sun for several hours.

IMD states that in the yellow warning areas, the temperature is moderate and heat is tolerable for the general public, but there is a moderate health concern for vulnerable people e.g. infants, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases. It is advised to avoid heat exposure and wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose, cotton clothes. And also cover the head with a cloth, hat or umbrella.

Meanwhile, in the orange alert regions, the temperature is high and there's an increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people who are either exposed to the sun for a prolonged period or doing heavy work. People must drink sufficient water, even if not thirsty and use ORS or other drinks to stay hydrated.

M Mohapatra, director general of IMD said, "When the winds blow from the eastern side or from the direction of Bay of Bengal then there is some clouding at times which bring down temperatures over the eastern states. But hot, dry winds from the northwest are blowing over east India, which has comparatively higher humidity levels due to their location. So, people in the eastern states need to take heat prevention measures adequately."

11 die of heat stroke during government award ceremony in India's Maharashtra

As heat wave conditions are rising in several Indian cities, state and central governments have issued guidelines for coping with the adverse weather. The circular issued states that all schools should ensure there is no student assembly during the afternoon shift. These guidelines come as summer vacations in Bengal government schools are preponed by three weeks. This means that the summer holidays for kids studying in govt-aided schools will begin from May 2 instead of May 24, a senior official on Wednesday said. According to the IMD, heatwave conditions will persist over West Bengal during the weekend. Here's everything you need to know about the guidelines issued by the Indian government.

In the statement, the government said, "As the daytime temperature in Delhi crosses more than 40 degrees Celsius during the summer season this is detrimental to the health of the children and adolescents studying in schools. The rise in temperature in NCR has led to the increased instance of heat-related illness."

In 2022, India reported one of the hottest summers with 203 heatwave days, the highest in history. The highest number of heatwave days was reported in Uttrakhand (28), Rajasthan (26), Haryana (24), Punjab (24), Delhi (17) and Uttar Pradesh (15).

What is a Heatwave?

A heatwave is a period of excessive heat or hot weather, which might be accompanied by humidity.

The IMD classifies a day as a heatwave day when the highest temperature reaches a minimum of 40 degrees Celsius and is at least 4.5 degrees highest than the average temperature.

Below are the guidelines issued by the Delhi government:

The first guideline stated, "All Govt/Govt aided/Pvt unaided schools recognised under the Directorate of Education will have to ensure availability of drinking water to students in the schools. Students should be given water breaks during classes."

No student assembly during the afternoon shift.

All schools must sensitise students to cover their heads during the daytime.

Schools must inform nearby hospitals or health facility care if any student suffers from heat-related illness.

On Wednesday, IMD predicted heatwave conditions in several states, saying that the temperature is expected to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in the upcoming days.

IMD Bhubaneswar in a statement said, "Maximum temperature (day temperature) very likely to gradually rise further by 2-3 degree Celsius at many places over the districts of Odisha during the next 2 days and no large change thereafter. Maximum temperature (day temperature) likely to be more than 40 degrees and above normal by 3-5 degrees at a few places over the districts of Odisha during next 4 days."

Heatwave in India: Delhi, Bengal, Odisha, other states issue guidelines amid severe weather

North India is likely to witness a hot spell soon this year, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) saying that several parts of the country will witness a spike in temperature in the next five days. The IMD warned that there would be a gradual rise of two-four degrees Celsius over the next five days in the country. The IMD warning comes after the agency said that except for parts of the northwest and peninsular region, most parts of India are likely to witness above-normal maximum temperatures from April to June.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mahapatra said, “A significantly higher number of heatwave days are predicted over parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana."

The summer season this year is expected to break records. February was the hottest since weather records started to be maintained in 1901, according to the IMD. But March was relatively normal due to the above-normal rainfall following the seven western disturbances, including five strong ones.

The national capital Delhi witnessed extreme weather swings in the last month, with unexpected rains shocking weathermen and the common people. Thunderstorms and hailstorms were recorded which damaged crops in northern India.

Thunderstorms and strong winds have been predicted over Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh in the next two days. "Thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely over Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh during the next two days and decrease thereafter," the IMD advisory said.

Australia's southern regions swelter in the first heatwave of the season, temperature hits 38°C in Adelaide

In the temperate shallows of the Mediterranean, once-vibrant red and purple coral forests that provide a crucial haven for biodiversity now stand bleached and brittle, transformed into skeletons by record summer temperatures, scientists say.

Holding naked branches of gorgonian coral, Tristan Estaque of marine conservation group Septentrion Environnement is returning despondent from an exploratory dive off the coast of Marseille in southern France.

"It is heartbreaking, the deterioration is so fast," he tells AFP.

Dive surveys just two months earlier found an intact landscape, lush with violet-fringed fans of gorgonian coral.

Now it is a "ghost forest", says Estaque, with the majestic fans largely bare of living tissue.

"You have to imagine a tree where there are no more leaves, no more bark."

Fragile forests

Gorgonian corals, which have flexible skeletons encrusted with polyps, are found across the planet.

Those found in the Mediterranean are said to create "forests", sheltering a huge array of species. But they are acutely vulnerable to human activities.

Fishing nets, anchors and careless divers can rip their delicate structures, while exposure to continuous and intense heat can be lethal.

Marine heatwaves are becoming more common, according to a report this year by UN climate experts.

This summer a major marine heatwave hit the western Mediterranean, with water up to five degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit) hotter than normal, according to Mercator Ocean International, the organisation that runs the European ocean monitoring service.

In some places water reached 30ºC.

Recent Septentrion Environment surveys have shown that between 70 and 90 per cent of the red gorgonian population in the 10 to 20-metre zone off Marseille have since died.

The effect was like "an underwater inferno", according to Solene Basthard-Bogain, another of the group's specialists.

And it is not just near the southern French coast.

Gorgonian mortality has also been observed on the Spanish coasts and around the Italian island of Sardinia, according to Stephane Sartoretto of the French research agency Ifremer.

The severity of the impact appears to vary depending on the depth of the corals.

Along the sawtooth coastline of France's Calanques National Park, notched with craggy coves and shallow habitats where the gorgonians are found in waters of just six metres (20 feet) in places, the die-offs have been particularly intense.

In the Balearic Islands, they live deeper, at 40 metres, and were therefore less impacted, Sartoretto says.

'Forest fire'

"You have to imagine a tree where there are no more leaves, no more bark." Fragile forests Gorgonian corals, which have flexible skeletons encrusted with polyps, are found across the planet. WATCH | 'We need to rethink our role on planet if corals cannot be saved' × Recent Septentrion Environment surveys have shown that between 70 and 90 per cent of the red gorgonian population in the 10 to 20-metre zone off Marseille have since died. The effect was like "an underwater inferno", according to Solene Basthard-Bogain, another of the group's specialists. And it is not just near the southern French coast. ALSO READ: Coral reefs in western Indian Ocean face extinction by 2070, study claims Gorgonian mortality has also been observed on the Spanish coasts and around the Italian island of Sardinia, according to Stephane Sartoretto of the French research agency Ifremer. 'Forest fire' In addition to the gorgonians, sponges and bivalves have also been affected. WION Climate Tracker: Climate change spells trouble for Europe

According to a report by the World Meteorological Organization, temperatures across Europe have climbed in the past 30 years at a rate that is more than twice as rapid as the global average (WMO).

France and Spain experienced abnormally high temperatures on Thursday, which attracted some beachgoers but also added to growing worries about changing weather patterns in Europe.

Tourists were sunbathing in bikinis on the French Riviera, the terraces were packed, and the water was warm enough to swim in.

“At the end of October it cools down normally and by All Saints Day it usually rains, but this year is exceptional,” said Rose-Marie Martini, tanning on the beach in a bathing suit.

She stated that the water at her house was still warm enough for swimming (20 to 21 degrees Celsius) and that the heating was still off.

The exceptionally warm October in Western Europe comes after a summer when sweltering temperatures dried up rivers, farms, and forests and let flames run wild.

Unusually warm autumn in Europe raises climate concerns; UN warns of 'irreversible' climate breakdown

A study published in medical journal The Lancet has said that there was 55 per cent rise in deaths due to heatwave in India between 2000-04 and 2017-21. The study said that this in turn caused loss of income equal to 5.4 per cent of the GDP. In summer, many parts of India regularly face heatwaves but experts are now saying that these heatwaves are now becoming longer and more intense.

The annual Lancet Countdown report was published on Tuesday (October 26).

The report says that exposure to heat caused loss of 167.2 billion potential labour hours among Indians in 2021.

The report looked at 103 countries. It has been found that heatwave that hit India and Pakistan in March and April was considerably more likely due to effects of climate change.

"Exposure to extreme heat affects health directly, exacerbating underlying conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, and causing heat stroke, adverse pregnancy outcomes, worsened sleep patterns, poor mental health, and increased injury-related death," said the study.

Fossil fuel dependence risks

The report also noted that over-dependence on fossil fuels was worsening impact of issues such as climate change, pandemics and food security. It further said that global land area affected by extreme drought had increased by nearly a third in the last 50 years, putting hundreds of millions of people at risk of water insecurity.

"Climate change is already having a negative impact on food security, with worrying implications for malnutrition and under-nourishment," said Elizabeth Robinson, director of the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics and a lead contributor to the Countdown.

"Further increases in temperature, frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, and carbon dioxide concentrations, will put yet more pressure on availability of and access to nutritious food, especially for the most vulnerable."

More Indians are losing lives due to heatwaves, casualties up by 55%: Lancet study

International climate pledges remain far off track to limit rising temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, according to a report released by the United Nations on Wednesday, less than two weeks ahead of high-stakes negotiations to tackle global warming.

The combined climate pledges of more than 190 nations that signed up to the 2015 Paris climate deal put Earth on track to warm by around 2.5C compared to pre-industrial levels by the century's end.

With the planet already battered by climate-enhanced heatwaves, storms and floods after just 1.2C of warming, experts say the world is still failing to act with sufficient urgency to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

"We are still nowhere near the scale and pace of emission reductions required to put us on track toward a 1.5 degrees Celsius world," said Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change.

"To keep this goal alive, national governments need to strengthen their climate action plans now and implement them in the next eight years."

The UN's climate experts have said emissions -- compared to 2010 levels -- need to fall 45 per cent by 2030 in order to meet the Paris deal's more ambitious goal.

In its latest report, the UN said that current commitments from governments around the world will in fact increase emissions by 10.6 per cent by 2030.
