European countries are feeling the heat of erratic and extreme weather patterns due to record high temperatures. In the UK, intense heat has shown just how infrastructurally unequipped the country is to deal with such high temperatures. In this episode of The Full Context, WION decodes Europe’s heat wave.

The Full Context: Understanding Europe’s heat wave

Records have tumbled and firefighters faced new blazes as much of Western Europe baked in a gruelling heatwave. Heatwaves have become more frequent and more intense, and last longer because of human-induced climate change.

Records fall as extreme heat bakes Western Europe

As heat wave sweeps Europe, UN warns it should be a 'wake-up call' for governments and voters to do more on climate change. WION decodes Europe's heat wave.

Not only in the United Kingdom but wildfires across Europe also continue to rage as the southern part of the continent reports record heat wave. Starting with Portugal, the country has reported over a thousand deaths due to the current heat wave prompting officials to issue warnings that the country must gear up to cope with the effects of climate change.

The Full Context: Understanding Europe’s heat

Britain recorded its hottest day ever on Tuesday (July 19), with the temperature exceeding 40C. Not just Britain, the entire Europe is gripped by the extreme heatwave. Hot weather has fueled a spate of fires across London.

As parts of Europe continue to burn, the region's atmospheric monitoring service has issued a warning that the heatwave is generating very high levels of harmful ozone pollution. It added that large areas of western Europe also face "extreme" danger of wildfires.

According to a statement from the Copernicus monitoring service: "Tinder dry conditions and extreme heat are exacerbating the risk of wildfires." The warning also mentioned that a large proportion of western Europe is in "extreme fire danger" and some areas of "very extreme fire danger".

Copernicus also said that the heatwave is also causing high levels of ground-level ozone. On its website, the monitoring service wrote that the scientists are warning "very high levels of ozone pollution" in southern Europe caused by the heatwave could now affect northwestern regions in the coming week.

As heatwave continues across Europe, warning issued over 'very high' ozone pollution

What Britishers are doing to cope with extreme heat- see pics

Tuesday was the biggest day for the London Fire Brigade since World War II as firefighters responded to more than 2,600 requests and battled 12 flames at once, according to Mayor Sadiq Khan. According to him, at least 41 properties were damaged.

Even though cloudy skies and showers gave reprieve from the sweltering temperatures of recent days, Wednesday's record-breaking heat wave in Britain nevertheless caused transport disruptions for a third day. Firefighters also continued to be on high alert. In contrast to Tuesday's record-breaking high of 40.3C (104.4F) at Coningsby in eastern England, forecasters anticipate that London will only reach a high of 26 Celsius (79 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday.

However, as engineers work to fix electrical lines and signalling equipment damaged by a heat-related fire on Tuesday, the main railway line between London and Edinburgh will be shut down until noon, according to the London North Eastern Railway. Grassland surrounding the city has been dried out by hot, dry weather, so even if the temperature has dropped, Khan added.

Khan told the BBC, “Once it catches fire it spreads incredibly fast, like wildfires like you see in movies or in fires in California or in parts of France… I’ve just spoken to the fire commissioner. He’s still concerned about the ground being dry and the speed of fire spreading.”

On record, 85 large wildfires are burning in 13 US states, scorching more than 3 million acres, while more than 100 million Americans are in regions covered either under heat advisories or heat warnings. Officials recorded 14 additional big flames on Tuesday: seven in Texas, two in Alaska, two in Washington, and one each in Arizona and California. In total, more than 6,800 wildland firefighters and other support personnel were sent to fight fires across the US. The mercury could reach 110ºF at some places and met officials predicted the record-breaking heat to continue for a week, The Guardian reported.

Additionally, the northeast is anticipated to suffer from extreme heat. Between Philadelphia and Boston, the heat index is expected to reach close to 100º F on Wednesday (July 20).

Disasters are becoming more frequent and severe. The report commissioned by the economy and environment ministries, droughts, floods, and high heatwaves are to be blamed for a rough expenditure of 145 billion euros ($147 billion) in damages that occurred between 2000 and 2021 in Germany mostly occurred in recent years. Steffi Lemke, minister of environment said these horrifying facts showed ‘enormous damage and expenses’ of the climate crisis. Similarly, Robert Habeck, Economy Minister said that in order to keep the impact of the climate crisis at a reasonable level, the country needs to coexist with rapid global action.
