Heatwave will envelop France between Thursday (June 16) and Saturday (June 18), with temperatures in central parts of the country reaching 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). A cold air system coming from the Maghreb region is acting like gear, pushing hot air upwards towards France and the Iberian peninsula, Meteo France weather expert Olivier Proust said.

"It's as if a heatstroke enters the country, with temperatures largely surpassing normal levels," he said, showing a map of France with bright red zones in most of the west and the south, stretching into central France.

The high temperatures will also worsen drought, already experienced in the Loire Valley, with riverbeds in towns like Ancenis-Saint-Gereon and Mauges-sur-Loire expanding as water levels drop, and the soil cracking from dryness.

France braces for heatwave in coming days, as temperatures cross 40 degrees Celcius

Oregon health officials say the impacts of climate change, including more devastating wildfires, heat waves, drought and poor air quality, are fuelling 'climate anxiety' among young people.

Their findings have been published in a report that highlights youth feelings of distress, anger and frustration about perceived adult and government inaction.

In a briefing on Tuesday hosted by the Oregon Health Authority, three young people spoke about how climate change has affected their mental health.

High school student Mira Saturen expressed the terror she felt when the Almeda Fire swept through the area near her hometown of Ashland in southwestern Oregon in September of 2020. The blaze destroyed more than 2,500 homes.

"It was a terrible and stressful couple of days as details about the fire trickled in," said the 16-year-old. Her fears were heightened by the fact that her father works for the fire department. "He was out fighting the fire for over 36 hours, which was super scary for me."

Gov. Kate Brown in March 2020 directed OHA to study the effects of climate change on youth mental health. In its report, the agency says its research was designed to center the voices of youth, especially tribal youth and youth of color in Oregon.

The report underlines that marginalised communities are more likely to experience adverse health effects from climate change, and notes that "emerging research is showing similar disproportionate burdens in terms of mental health."

Te Maia Wiki, another high school student in Ashland, touched on this.

"For me, it's important to mention that I'm Indigenous," she said. The 16-year-old's mother is Yurok, an Indigenous people from Northern California along the Pacific coast and the Klamath River.

OHA partnered with the University of Oregon Suicide Prevention Lab to review literature, conduct focus groups with young people, and interview professionals from the public health, mental health and educational sectors. While focusing on Oregon, the report underlines broader concerns about youth mental health in the United States amidst growing rates of depression and suicide nationwide.

Climate change and the coronavirus pandemic have further exacerbated an already alarming youth mental health crisis. The number of high school students reporting persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness increased by 40 per cent from 2009 to 2019, according to a Surgeon General's Advisory issued in December. Report: Fires, heat waves cause 'climate anxiety' in youth

Spain is sweltering under the sun as a record-breaking pre-summer heat wave has gripped several parts of the country. Meanwhile, heat wave is likely to start today in France.

Extreme heat grips European countries | Temperatures cross 43°C in several parts of Spain

As a scorching, probably record-breaking heat wave swept across the central and eastern United States on Monday, more than 100 million Americans were under some type of heat warning or advisory.

After burning parts of the West late last week and over the weekend, the heat has shifted east. Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Denver were among the cities that set new highs.

Through Wednesday, southerly winds were projected to carry hot, humid air into the eastern two-thirds of the country, with temperatures reaching 10 to 30 degrees above normal, forecasts warned.

The National Weather Service in Chicago advised, "Limit intense outside activity and sun exposure!"

Following heavy thunderstorms and gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, tens of thousands of Chicago residents lost power Monday night. According to ComEd, Chicago's sole power supplier, there were 882 current outages in the metro region as of 10 p.m. ET, affecting about 75,000 people.

Many cities, including Chicago, have announced plans to build cooling centres, with officials beginning to notify people on Monday about where they may get refuge from the heat. According to a news release, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the city expects to open six community service centres, as well as 75 public libraries throughout the city.

After more than 700 people, many of them elderly, died in a 1995 heatwave, the city increased its efforts to respond to heatwaves. Three people died in a senior home facility during a brief heatwave last month, raising questions about the city's ability to respond to extreme heat.

The weather service forecasts daytime temperatures in the Northwest and northern Rockies to be 10-20 degrees below normal.

The meteorological service issued winter storm warnings and advisories for the mountains of northwest Montana, including the Glacier National Park area, where several inches of wet snow were forecast at elevations above 5,000 feet.

Many states across the United States are facing scorching heat right now. This year, the US has recorded a historic heat wave, with temperatures going up to 10 to 30 degrees above normal. The National Weather Service has advised people to stay indoors as much as possible, take care of their health and stay hydrated. More than 100 million people are expected to be affected by the heatwave. The warnings were also issued for Illinois and Indiana along with parts of southern Michigan and north-western Ohio from Tuesday through Wednesday night according to the National Weather Service. Many parts of the Midwest and South were mainly affected. Many areas suffer power outages in United States Due to the extreme weather conditions and severe storms in the many areas of the Midwest, more than 620,000 people had to go without power early Tuesday, according to Power Outage US, with more than 370,000 outages in Ohio alone. Also read | Extreme heat wave in US: 100 million Americans asked to stay indoors Many people tweeted and mentioned the problems they are facing due to the power outage. Ballina Shire Council mayor, Sharon Cadwallader said that "the resulting power outages have left residents in a communication black-hole". While some said that they are unable to do the daily chores. Concerns for animals rise Heatwaves not only affect humans but also animals. Due to the temperatures increasing rapidly, it’s difficult for the animals to grasp all the changes. Drought-like conditions are increased temperatures that have resulted in wildfires, which result in the death of many wildlife animals. Heat can dry up rivers and plants, which are a source of food and water for animals. According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, an estimated 80 per cent of the shrub-steppe has been lost. While researchers estimate that more than a billion marine animals along the coast were killed by extreme temperatures in Pacific Northwest. Rabbits, cattle and stationary organisms are at a higher risk. Watch | Severe storms wreak havoc in South US, government buildings and houses destroyed Florida, Ohio, Chicago, Kansas, Texas, Georgia are majorly affected According to statesatrisk.org, Florida currently has an average of 25 dangerous heatwaves each year. The temperature may go the to upper 90s and the heat indices near 110 degrees this week. A heat advisory is already in effect for the state of Florida. In Ohio, Kansas and Chicago as well an excessive heat warning is in effect. The temperature is expected to rise between 100 to 110 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Chicago is also one of the worst affected states. Texas has broken the power demand record during the heat wave. Georgia officials have also raised health concerns over heat waves. According to a report it currently averages about 20 dangerous heat days a year. When will the heatwave end? As of now, no information is given by the respected departments and officials about the end of the heatwave. However, last year's temperature dipped gradually for some weeks. Causes of the heatwave Many experts have already said about the linkage of the heatwave with climate change. Due to increased global warming, and pollution, the earth is getting warmer day by day. They have also pointed out the importance to take necessary steps to protect our environment, in order to prevent future problems. We can easily see with the adverse climate conditions in the US as well as other parts of the world, including Spain, India, etc. that there is an urgent need to take necessary steps for environmental protection. Along with the heatwaves, the US is also suffering from other climate-related catastrophes. Everyone hopes that the conditions get better soon. Central, northwest India to ditch heatwave, set a date with pre-monsoon showers from Wednesday

The state forecaster Meteo France has anticipated an early heatwave in France this week, with temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) in the south. The department said that this year’s heat wave will arrive early, with the temperatures expected to be similar to those recorded during the peak of summer. The heatwave is expected to hit the southern portion of the country first extending to the north. The temperatures are projected to reach 35 to 38 degrees Celsius from the middle of the week until the weekend and will not fall below 20 degrees, as per the state weather service, reported by France 24.

The reason behind this is due to a low-pressure system in the Atlantic between the Azores and Madeira, which encourages warm air to rise over Western Europe.

Yellow alert issued as Northern India continues to blaze under heatwave, rising temperature

The 2022 heatwave has swept several parts of Northern India in the last few days. The maximum temperatures in certain cities crossed the dreaded 49 degrees Celsius mark in the month of May. The Delhi heatwave, in particular, is the worst. While it's already difficult to keep our skin's condition in check during the peak summer season, we cannot even imagine how hard it gets during the heatwave. Only customised skincare routines can save us from irreparable sun damage and some expert tips can come in handy too.

While there are many summer skincare tips available online, just a few are backed by research and experts' testimony. To get you a comprehensive guide on suitable skincare during the heatwave, we spoke to a few skin experts, dermatologists and estheticians. And, here's what we found.

Skincare tips to reverse heatwave damage

Tip 1 - Hydration is key

Since we all know that exposure to excess heat and high temperatures can make us feel dehydrated. And, our skin looses its glow, shine and charm. According to Dr. Nilam Jain Kothari, who is a consultant dermatologist at Masina hospital, drinking enough water and healthy beverages made of natural ingredients can help you get your skin’s charm back. You must have heard of beauty snacking, how about you also start beauty drinking.

Tip 2 - Consume food items with high antioxidants

The dermatologist from the Mumbai hospital also suggested that we eat vegetables and fruits that are high in antioxidants as they act as “oral sunscreens”. Foods rich in antioxidants can help you reverse the damage induced by the harmful sun rays. “They act as a defence mechanism against oxidative stress induced by heatwave.

Tip 3 - Wear SPF and use protective skin gear

The first advice that you hear from any doctor for your summer skincare is proper user of SPF. Since the UV rays can damage your skin to a great extent, you must apply sunscreen, sun lotions or sprays before stepping out of your house. Make sure that you don’t skip wearing SPF even if you are wearing clothes that are fully covered.

Tip 4 - Prevent skin congestion

Don’t use creams and lotions that are comedogenic. Opt for non-comedogenic moisturisers to avoid skin congestion. This will help you keep your skin clear and acne-free even during super hot and sunny days.

Tip 5 - Use cooling face mists

Whether you have your makeup on or not, you can use facial mists to give your skin an instant hydration boost. It also helps with sunburns and rashes.

Tip 6 - Use waterproof and lightweight makeup

Instead of using heavy creams and makeup products, opt for lightweight makeup formulas as it helps your skin breath during extremely hot weather.

Tip 7 - Avoid stepping out during hottest hours of the day

Sometimes even SPF and other protective gears cannot help us keep our skin safe during heatwave. So, the dermatologist suggests that we must avoid stepping out of our houses from 12 pm to 4 pm.

Climate change has rendered the blistering heatwave that has gripped South Asia in recent days 30 times more likely, according to a report.

The rapid-response report, which quantified the influence of global warming on extreme weather events, said that before the advent of human-caused climate change such an event would occur after roughly 3000 years.

According to the report, the record length of the heatwave, which witnessed power disruptions as temperatures reached the high 40s, indicates that climate-vulnerable countries are racing against the clock to prepare for a climate-addled future.

Friederike Otto, the report's principal author and a scientist at Imperial College London's Grantham Institute, told AFP that global warming of 1.2 degrees Celsius has lowered the so-called return period of extreme heat from 3000 years to once a century.

As the earth warms, the time between deadly waves will become much shorter. "A heatwave like this one would be expected as often as once every five years" if Earth's average surface temperature rises another four-fifths of a degree to 2C above preindustrial levels, found Otto and her team.

A world warmed by two degrees Celsius or a 2C world is an unsettlingly plausible scenario. Even if we were to fulfil existing national commitments to reduce carbon pollution under the Paris Agreement, we would still see a global warming of 2.8 degrees Celsius.

However, among the first visible effects of the heatwave was the transformation of a bountiful wheat crop in India into an agricultural disaster. As a result, the country has blocked the export of millions of tonnes.

This pushed up worldwide prices dramatically in a market already crippled by the hampered exports from war-torn Ukraine.

More than 90 deaths have been directly linked to the heatwave thus far. However, if recent hot spells are any indication, the number will be much greater, possibly in the thousands.

Climate change has rendered the blistering heatwave that has gripped South Asia in recent days 30 times more likely, according to a report. Watch | Alarming report on South Asia Heatwave: 'Extreme weather due to climate change' Friederike Otto, the report's principal author and a scientist at Imperial College London's Grantham Institute, told AFP that global warming of 1.2 degrees Celsius has lowered the so-called return period of extreme heat from 3000 years to once a century. Global warming made killer heatwaves in India, Pakistan 30 times more likely: Report

The impact of climate change is being felt around the world. In South Asia, record-breaking temperatures are being reported in most areas. Now, an alarming report on South Asia Heatwave warns that heatwave will be more frequent in the future.

Alarming report on South Asia Heatwave: 'Extreme weather due to climate change'

A large number of states across the US are reeling from a heatwave that has seen above-average temperatures in at least a dozen states. The mercury is breaking records and it is estimated that about 130 heat records will be broken for temperatures at this time of the year.

The heatwave which previously affected states in the south and west of the country is now moving east. Temperatures are 20 to 30F above average in mid-Atlantic and north-east.

More than 120 million Americans are facing the heatwave. This has raised the spectre of health risks for vulnerable people and those who work outdoors. Even those who do not have access to indoor cooling are said to be at risk.

USA's National Weather Service has issued a special statement in light of the heatwave. It has cautioned citizens to remain on guard to observe any signs of heat illnesses among family. The NWS has recommended that people take breaks inside when possible and stay hydrated.

The heatwave has resulted in increased demand for power in some states.

On Thursday, power consumption in the state of Texas hit a monthly record on Thursday as consumers keep air conditioners cranked up to escape a lingering spring heatwave.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates the grid for most of the state, said conditions were normal early Friday.

At the start of the current heat, ERCOT was forced to ask customers to conserve energy on May 13 after several power plants shut unexpectedly, causing real-time prices to soar to over $4,000 per megawatt hour (MWh).

US heatwave moves east, power consumptions increase

Climate change is taking a heavy toll on Europe, with tornado ripping through Germany while Spain endures one of the worst heatwaves in its history.

In Germany, a strong tornado left behind a trail of destruction in several towns in the western part of the country, leaving more than 40 people injured and one dead.

Officers in the western Paderborn city, which has a population of about 150,000, said the winds, which meteorologists warned could reach up to 130kmph (81mph), blew away roofs, toppled trees and sent debris flying for miles.

"Thirty to 40 injured, at least 10 of them seriously," Paderborn police said, according to Sky News.

People have been urged to remain in their houses so that the rescue efforts are not hampered, otherwise they could endanger themselves.

As heavy rain and hail swept across the country, the western German town of Lippstadt was also heavily damaged by a tornado, officials said.

A 38-year-old man also died in severe storms which lashed the region on Friday.

Images on social media showed that in nearby Hellinghausen, a steeple had been ripped off the roof of a church tower, with the rubble scattered in the churchyard.

Whereas contrasting conditions were witnessed in Spain with temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius in some places, making May the hottest month.

The state weather agency, AEMET, issued heat warnings in 10 regions for Saturday, saying it could be “one of the most intense” heatwaves in years.

The city of Jaén in southern Spain recorded its highest ever May temperature of 40C on Friday.

Meteorologists say that Spain's unseasonably warm spring weather is due to hot air coming from North Africa, causing temperatures to rise by up to 15C above average for this time of year.

The worst-hit regions are Andalusia in the south, Extremadura in the south-east, Madrid and Castilla La Mancha in the centre and Aragon in the north-east, BBC reported.

Spain's health ministry urged residents to drink plenty of water and to stay in cool places when possible. It also advised people to reduce physical activity.
