Israel takes dig at Greta Thunberg over her post showing support for Palestinians

<p>The Metropolitan Police Service on Wednesday (Oct 18) said that climate activist Greta Thunberg was charged with a public order offence after she was detained at a protest outside an annual gathering of energy industry figures in London.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thunberg was among the 26 people charged by the UK police after being held at the demonstration site on Tuesday. She was charged with "failing to comply with a condition" levied under Britain's Public Order Act that deals with public assemblies and was released on bail.</p>

<p>The 20-year-old activist is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Nov 15 .</p>

<p>She was taken away from the site of the protest by two police officers and put into the back of a police van parked outside the Energy Intelligence Forum.</p>

<h2><strong>Protesters block entrances to energy event venue</strong></h2>

<p>As per news agency AFP reports, several hundred protestors had gathered outside the InterContinental London Park Lane hotel during the "Oily Money Out" demonstration, organised by pressure groups Fossil Free London and Greenpeace, blocking all entrances to the venue.</p>

<p>Banging drums, the protesters chanted, "Stop the oil, stop the gas." The protesters argued that most industry profit is ploughed back into dirty energy that worsens climate change.</p>

Swedish court fines Greta Thunberg again for disobeying police orders

<p>Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is set to face another trial towards the end of September, said Malmo's public prosecutor on Friday (September 15), as she has been charged with "resisting arrest" at a July protest.</p>

<p>This is less than two months after she was convicted and fined for the same offence.</p>

<p>The 20-year-old climate activist was fined 1,500 Swedish crowns ($134) by a Swedish court on July 24 for not calling off a rally after being ordered by the police. After the verdict, Thunberg and other activists from 'Reclaim the Future' environmental group, had blocked the road for oil trucks in Malmo harbour and were again forcibly removed by police.</p>

<p>"The protest was unauthorised and led to traffic being blocked. The young woman refused to obey police order to leave the site," said prosector Isabel Ekberg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is therefore a case of refusal to comply."</p>

<p>Hours before the July rally, Thunberg was convicted by a Swedish court and also slapped with a fine for disobeying police orders at a previous rally at the same port on 19 June.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thunberg admitted to the Malmo district court that she had not abided by the orders from the police to relocate, but also denied criminality, citing the necessity created by the "climate crisis."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Accusing the fossil fuel industry of "greenwashing" by sponsoring cultural events, Thunberg said she does not want to be associated with it.</p>

<p>"Greenwashing efforts by the fossil fuel industry, including sponsorship of cultural events, allows them to keep the social licence to continue operating."</p>

<p>Baillie Gifford, which is an investment management firm, as per BBC, has been a sponsor of&nbsp;the Edinburgh book festival for over 19 years.</p>

<p>The company, however, said that it was not a significant fossil fuel investor. It also claims that compared to the market average of 11 per cent,&nbsp;only about two per cent of its clients' money is invested into fossil fuels.</p>

<p>"Of those companies, some have already moved most of their business away from fossil fuels, and many are helping to drive the transition to clean energy," added a company spokesperson.</p>

<p>"We would not be in a position to provide that platform without the long-term support of organisations such as Baillie Gifford," said Barley as quoted by BBC.</p>

<p>"We strongly believe that Baillie Gifford are part of the solution to the climate emergency. They are early investors in progressive climate positive companies, providing funds to help them grow".</p>

<p>Apologising to people who had purchased the tickets hoping to see the young climate activist, he said they will be refunded in full.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thunberg, citing the need created by the "climate crisis", said she had acted out of necessity. &nbsp;</p>

<p>"My actions are justifiable," Thunberg told the court. "I believe that we are in an emergency that threatens life, health and property. Countless people and communities are at risk both in the short term and in the long term."</p>

<p>After the short trial, the court however found that Thunberg was still liable for her conduct and slapped her with a fine of 1,500 kronor ($144) plus an additional 1,000 kronor to the Swedish fund for the victims of crime.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Tuesday morning, Norwegian police forcibly removed a dozen activists from one of the ministry's entrances.</p>

<p>The protests came over a year after Norway's highest court unanimously ruled that the expropriation and operating permits for the construction of the 151 turbines were invalid.</p>

<p>However, they gave no guidance on what should be done with the turbines, which were already in operation.<br />
The Norwegian authorities have so far held off taking action and ordered further assessments, hoping to find a way that the turbines and Sami people can coexist.</p>

Greta Thunberg expands wind farm protest in Norway

<p>Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg on Thursday (January 19) accused the attendees of the World Economic Forum (WEF) of fuelling the destruction of the planet, as she spoke during a round-table discussion in Davos between climate campaigners and International Energy Agency head Fatih Birol.</p>

<p>She also slammed the&nbsp;United Arab Emirates&nbsp;for appointing Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber, chief executive of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), as chair of the Cop28 climate talks later this year.</p>

<p>She raised the matter at an event on the sidelines of the WEF’s annual meeting, saying&nbsp;lobbyists have been influencing these conferences “since, basically, forever”.</p>

<p>“This just puts a very clear face to it,” she added. “It’s completely ridiculous.”</p>

<p>Responding to Greta,&nbsp;a Cop28 spokesperson insisted al-Jaber,&nbsp;who founded&nbsp;renewable energy firm Masdar&nbsp;in 2006, was “uniquely qualified to deliver a successful Cop28”.</p>

<p>Thunberg participated in the discussion along with fellow activists Helena Gualinga from Ecuador, Vanessa Nakate from Uganda and Luisa Neubauer from Germany. The four&nbsp;activists called out energy companies and financial institutions that were financing investments in fossil fuels.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are right now in Davos where (there are) basically the people who are mostly fuelling the destruction of the planet," Thunberg said, reported news agency AFP. "The people who are at the very core of the climate crisis, the people who are investing in fossil fuels etc, and yet somehow these are the people that we seem to rely on for solving our problems," she added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thunberg pointed out that without massive public pressure from the outside, these people would go as far as they possibly could, as long as they could get away with it. "They will continue to invest in fossil fuels. They will continue to throw people under the bus for their own gain."</p>

<p>The Swedish climate activist also said that the global emissions of greenhouse gases were still increasing. Activist Helena Gualinga from Ecuador said during the round-table discussion that she, Greta, Vanessa and Luisa created a "cease and desist" letter to oil CEOs urging them to phase out from new fossil fuel projects.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They, we know that they knew there's a report that has come out saying that they knew way before us what they were doing when they were exploring for oil. They knew what the consequences would be of CO<sub>2</sub> gas emissions. ‘Small d*** energy’: Greta Thunberg responds to Andrew Tate’s supercar flex on Twitter. He replies.

<p>Swedish environmental activist, Greta Thunberg, famous for challenging world leaders to take immediate action for climate change mitigation,&nbsp;joined hundreds of other youths in suing the Swedish government for what they claim is inaction on climate change on Friday in Stockholm.</p>

<p>“Today on Black Friday is the perfect day to sue the state over its insufficient climate policies,” Thunberg said on Twitter. “So that’s what we did. See you in court!”</p>

<p>The case was planned and submitted by the Swedish youth-led group Aurora, and the 19-year-old was one of more than 600 young people to sign on. To file the lawsuit, the group marched to Stockholm District Court on Friday.</p>
