The Aussie all-rounder has been a success in the limited-overs format but has failed to leave an impact in Test cricket. The 32-year-old last wore the baggy green cap back in 2017 against Bangladesh.&nbsp;

Despite India exposing&nbsp;holes in Australia's&nbsp;brittle middle-order after a&nbsp;2-1 series defeat,&nbsp;Maxwell had no illusions about where he stood.

"I don't think I stand anywhere near it, to be honest," Maxwell told Australia's Herald Sun newspaper.&nbsp;

"They've got their idea of what they want. They've got guys in there at the moment who are very, very good first-class players.

"Cameron Green we can see is going to be an absolute superstar, Puck (Will Pucovski), Travis Head's on the bench averaging 40 in test cricket. "They've got more than enough."

In 2013, Maxwell made his Test debut against India and has only one century to his name against the same opposition. He scored it during the 2017 series.&nbsp;

He missed much of the domestic red-ball season because of his busy limited-overs schedule, which in turn weakened his case for a test recall.

"It's one of those things where sometimes it's a bit of a double-edged sword," he said.

"You'd love to put your name forward for higher honours, but at the risk of losing your spot in the one-day team it's not worth it."

"It probably wasn't the ideal situation when I came in but being the last batter, I suppose I had a bit of license to go for it right from the start," Maxwell told Sky Sports.&nbsp;

"We thought if we could take it as deep as we could, myself and Alex, we might be a chance at the back end."

England captain Eoin Morgan said Australia were "too good for us", adding: "To lose two wickets for no runs and then post over 300 is a huge positive for us. I think Jonny Bairstow was outstanding today.

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is currently recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow, which he damaged while playing in the Australian T20 league. One of the most eagerly anticipated events of the Indian cricket calendar will take place on Thursday in Kolkata as 332 players undergo the hammer at the players' <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ipl-2019-awards-from-most-runs-to-best-catch-heres-a-list-all-the-winners-218212">auction for IPL 2020</a>.

Nine hundred and ninety-seven cricketers from across the globe had registered for the auction and the list has been subsequently pruned based on the shortlist of players submitted by the eight franchises.

A total of 186 Indians and 146 overseas players will be up for grabs but only a maximum of 73 will be bought, of which only 29 can be non-Indians.

Kings XI Punjab has the maximum purse available - 42 points, seven crore rupees for a maximum of nine players. While defending champions Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings have the lowest kitty of around 13 and 14 crores respectively.

There are seven players with the maximum base price of 2 crores - all of them overseas, while only one Indian features in the next highest category of 1.5 crores which has ten names.

IPL 2020 will be the last season before teams undergo a comprehensive squad overhaul in next year's auction.

"The positive thing is that guys are feeling perhaps more comfortable, if you like, to be open and honest with how they're feeling," he added.&nbsp;

"In the past guys might have just kicked on and tried to get through things and it could have built up to something worse."

Robert Craddock, a respected cricket writer for News Corp. newspapers, noted that the sport was also very mentally challenging.

"As long as I'm doing that, if they hit some good shots off my bowling I'm not too fazed.

"If I'm limiting the boundary balls and giving myself the best chance to squeeze a few dot balls, bowl a couple of tight overs, it might create a bit of pressure at the other end."

Maxwell bowled plenty of overs in the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan and away to India in recent months as Aaron Finch's side claimed confidence-building series victories.

He gave up the chance of a rich Indian Premier League deal to warm up for the World Cup with England county side Lancashire.

In six one-day matches with Lancashire, he managed a top score of only 35 with the bat but took wickets in every game bar one.

"To have that continue into my time at Lancashire, where I got plenty of time at the bowling crease, you get that rhythm, you get that feel of the ball coming out consistently," he said.

"We probably should have lost and if it wasn't for Pat Cummins and Jhye Richardson pulling something out of the hat," the relieved 30-year-old said.

The glass-half-full brigade will focus on Maxwell's studious innings that pulled Australia out of the fire, but the half-empty types will carp that he should have gone on with it and remains too risky a player to rely on at the World Cup in England and Wales.

"All three have had opportunities to cement their spots, but unfortunately, they have not been as productive as we would have liked in recent times when playing ODI cricket for Australia."

The series against India begins at the SCG on January 12 with matches in Adelaide and Melbourne to follow.
