Germany, on Monday, downplayed expectation that NATO summit next week would take concrete decision on Finland and Sweden's membership, but it stressed that a deal was in sight.

"I think this is about expectations management and to place this in its historical context," said a high-ranking German government source.

"And given the historical dimension, it would not be a catastrophe if we need a few more weeks" to find a deal, the source added.

"We are confident, very confident that a solution can be found that takes into account both sides' interests."

The official was quoted by AFP.

NATO had originally expected Finland and Sweden's membership bids to sail through quickly at a time when the alliance is keen to show a united front vis-a-vis Russia.

But Turkey's last minute resistance has thrown them off course.

Ankara has accused Finland and Sweden of providing a safe haven for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), listed as a "terrorist" group by Turkey and its Western allies.

Ankara has also demanded that they lift their weapons freezes on Turkey.

Germany downplays Sweden, Finland's NATO bid expectation: Report

Amid concerns about possible shortages caused by a cut in supplies from Russia, the German minister of economics and climate protection said Sunday that the country will limit the use of natural gas for electricity production.

By burning coal, Germany will try to compensate for the move according to Robert Habeck, who is also the vice-chancellor of the country.

Habeck, who is a member of the environmentalist Green party, told German media that “That’s bitter, but it’s simply necessary for this situation to lower gas usage.”

Germany, which has long relied heavily on energy imports from Moscow, has slammed Russian gas company Gazprom's decision to sharply reduce supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.

Germany recorded a first-ever competitive victory against Italy in considerable style to kick-start their UEFA Nations League campaign and leapfrog their opponents in Group A3 on Tuesday. Hosts defeated European champions Italy 5-2 at Borussia Park. Germany, hoping to build on a run of four successive draws, started the brighter and could have taken the lead in the seventh minute but Leroy Sane`s curling effort from the edge of the box flew just wide. Italy made nine changes from their last outing against England and almost broke through themselves a minute later, Manuel Neuer making a vital save from Giacomo Raspadori. Instead, it was Germany who struck first, Joshua Kimmich coolly converting David Raum`s low centre from the left. Germany looked the likelier to score the second goal of the game, Gianluigi Donnarumma making three saves as half-time approached.

The Italy goalkeeper was beaten just before the interval, however, Ilkay Gundogan lofting his spot kick down the middle after Jonas Hofmann had been sent tumbling by Alessandro Bastoni. The Azzurri started the second half purposefully, Bryan Cristante unable to cap a neat passing move, but any hopes of a comeback were effectively extinguished in the 51st minute, Thomas Muller`s half-volley flying just out of the reach of Donnarumma to open up a three-goal cushion.

The introduction of Serge Gnabry just after the hour indicated the home team were not going to let up and it was the Bayern forward who was instrumental in teeing up Timo Werner for two close-range finishes in as many minutes. One bright spot for Roberto Mancini`s men has been the recent emergence of Wilfried Gnonto, the 18-year-old tapping in his first international goal from close range after Neuer had spilled Dimarco`s fierce shot.

The latter was also involved in added time, delivering the corner from which Bastoni headed in Italy`s second, but Germany had already done more than enough. Germany beat Italy in a competitive match for the first time at the 11th attempt. Die Mannschaft also scored four or more goals against Italy in a competitive fixture for the first time. Neuer won his 116th cap for Germany, putting him joint sixth with Philipp Lahm in the nation`s all-time appearance charts.

The company added it was halting the operation of a gas turbine due to the "technical condition of the engine".

Germany, meanwhile, has accused Russia of trying to 'drive up' gas prices.

Gazprom makes more cuts in Nord Stream gas supplies, Germany fumes

Germany will help Ukraine provide medical help for war victims by helping build trauma centres for the wounded, donating prosthetic limbs and deploying German doctors to the country, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said on Friday.

"Ukraine needs humanitarian aid just as urgently as it needs our military support," the minister said during a visit to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv.

The aid would include Germany helping to supply prostheses, deploying 200 doctors in Ukraine, setting up training on treating burns and connecting some hospitals in Ukraine to a telemedicine service, the ministry said in a statement.

Germany's largest artificial limb maker, Ottobock, is already in talks with the health ministry to help produce and fit prostheses in mobile container workshops and train orthopaedic specialists directly in Ukraine, a company spokesperson said.

Germany pledges medical aid to Ukraine

Visa requirements for Russian critics of Vladimir Putin's government will be eased to allow them to live and work in Germany, a German interior ministry spokesperson said Monday.

Journalists, scientists and civil society activists who are facing pressure from Moscow will be able to benefit from the newly agreed rules.

Human rights activists, employees of NGOs and civil society groups with a connection to Germany and journalists and researchers who have taken a stance against the war in Ukraine are among those who qualify to stay in the longer term.

Employees of foreign organisations which have been classified as "undesirable" in Russia can also be granted residency under the sped-up procedures. Their immediate family members will likewise benefit, said the spokesman.

The move aims to remove some of the red tape involved in Germany's visa process and guarantee a longer stay than the 90 days allowed under the Schengen tourist visa.

He could not give any figures on how many people might benefit from the eased procedures but said applicants will have to present "credible" cases.

Germany has opened its doors to Ukrainians fleeing Russia's invasion.
But in the last weeks, calls have grown for Europe's biggest economy to also offer protection to Kremlin critics.

Deputy Chancellor Robert Habeck said however that in the process of welcoming Russians, Germany has to ensure that "the wrong ones" do not "come to us, and we don't bring spies into our country".

Germany eases visa restrictions for Putin critics classified as 'undesirable' in Russia

In the aftermath of the attack on a busy Berlin street on Wednesday (June 8), the prosecutors will now seek to have the man, accused of driving a car through a crowd, to be kept in psychiatric care, the news agency AFP reported quoting a spokesman for the prosecution. The driver of the car apparently showed signs of mental illness, as per the spokesman.

One person was killed and eight were injured when a German-Armenian man drove into a group of people in the German capital, sparking terrorism fears. The incident took place on Rankestrasse near the main shopping district's Breitscheidplatz.

Spokesman Sebastian Buechner said that the 29-year-old has shown "relatively strong" signs of suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.

Buechner stated that a political motive is being ruled out, however, a further probe into the incident will reveal details of the case as to whether mental illness was the cause of the crime.

Meanwhile, as quoted by Reuters, an eyewitness to the deadly car crash said that the driver apologised immediately after the attack, telling police "I did not want that."

In a tragic accident, a school teacher from a small town in the central state of Hesse, was killed and a male teacher was seriously injured.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the attack. He termed it a "cruel rampage". Meanwhile, Berlin's Mayor Franziska Giffey told local media that the accused is "severely mentally impaired".

Negotiators in the European Union agreed late on Tuesday (June 7) for the bloc’s first ever women quota in corporate boards, aiming to enhance gender equality in the 450 million strong bloc, the lawmakers said, reported by Reuters.

The rule requires all listed firms in 27 European Union member nations to have at least 40 per cent of women in non-executive seats, 33 per cent in executive and non-executive jobs by mid of 2026.

The proposal had been dormant for a decade, but it regained steam this year with new backing from France and Germany.

However, there is no penalty for missing the target, companies that do meet it will be praised by the public. After the final round of the negotiators and EU member states, the parliament’s liberal Renew faction stated that this would raise pressure to comply.

As per the report, France, Germany and Italy set national goals in the year 2010, the female representation on boards in the EU increased. However, the progress has recently declined, with women accounting for less than a third of the non-executive board members in the union’s trading companies.

German foreign minister tests Covid positive during her visit to Pakistan

England captain Harry Kane scored his 50th international goal on Tuesday by converting a late penalty in Munich to seal a 1-1 Nations League draw with Germany.

Germany broke the deadlock when Jonas Hofmann fired the hosts ahead at the Allianz Arena, but Kane levelled from the spot with two minutes left.

Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck stumbled into Kane in the area and the penalty was given after a VAR review.

The Tottenham striker moved into outright second -- just three behind Wayne Rooney -- on England's list of all-time leading goalscorers, passing Bobby Charlton's total of 49.

"It's a really nice feeling," Kane told Channel Four.

"I had a couple of early chances and thought it could be one of those days."

"It's good to get the goal and it's just a shame we didn't nick it in the end," added Kane, who had earlier been denied by a superb Manuel Neuer save.

Gareth Southgate's side remain bottom of Group A3 after losing 1-0 to Hungary in Budapest last Saturday.

Southgate was "pleased with lots of parts" of the England performance.

"The Germans are the masters of tournaments and this was a good test," he told ZDF.

"Most of this (England) team has played a World Cup semi-final and the Euro 2020 final -- they showed the character to fight for a point."

Germany, who visit Hungary on Saturday, are a point above them in third as the Germans' coach Hansi Flick extended his unbeaten run to 11 games, dating back to September.

"We played a really good game, but weren't rewarded for the performance," Flick told ZDF.

Germany, playing in the shirts of their national women's team, twice breached the England defence in the first half without reward.

Thomas Mueller lobbed the ball over England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, but the whistle had already gone after an injury to Kalvin Phillips, who was replaced by Jude Bellingham.

Hofmann then broke clear and fired past Pickford, but after a VAR check, the effort was ruled offside.

Neuer, who captained Germany for the 54th time to overtake 2014 World Cup-winning skipper Philipp Lahm, made a reflex save to deny Bukayo Saka.

England struggled to get the ball into the box, especially in the first half, when Kane was closely marshalled by the German defence.

Germany were finally rewarded for their pressure early in the second period.

Joshua Kimmich split the defence with a pass into the feet of Hofmann, who drilled in a shot which Pickford could only get a glove to.

Only a fine stop by Pickford prevented Mueller marking his 114th international appearance with a goal.

Neuer again came to Germany's rescue with another excellent save from Kane's close-range effort.

However, there was no denying England's captain who sent Neuer the wrong way from the spot.

"It's bitter to concede the equaliser -- extremely stupid," Hofmann said. "But we created good chances and it was a decent performance."

IRIS-T air defence system will be supplied to Ukraine by Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said. The move has been taken after requests were made by Kyiv and opposition parties of Germany to hike the deliveries of heavy weapons. Germany had been "delivering continuously since the beginning of the war", Scholz added. Since the beginning of the invasion, Germany has already sent over 15 million rounds of ammunition, 100,000 grenades and over 5,000 anti-tank mines to Ukraine. Climate change is taking a heavy toll on Europe, with tornado ripping through Germany while Spain endures one of the worst heatwaves in its history.

In Germany, a strong tornado left behind a trail of destruction in several towns in the western part of the country, leaving more than 40 people injured and one dead.

Officers in the western Paderborn city, which has a population of about 150,000, said the winds, which meteorologists warned could reach up to 130kmph (81mph), blew away roofs, toppled trees and sent debris flying for miles.

"Thirty to 40 injured, at least 10 of them seriously," Paderborn police said, according to Sky News.

People have been urged to remain in their houses so that the rescue efforts are not hampered, otherwise they could endanger themselves. To save money, a woman in Germany has changed her mode of transportation as she has switched from an SUV car to a horse-drawn carriage, Associated Press reported.

Amid rising fuel prices, world leaders and economists are busy contemplating remedies. As temperatures continue to soar, experts are also advocating the use of electric vehicles.

However, 33-year-old Stephanie Kirchner, who is a farm owner in the western German state of Hesse, has found a creative way to tackle all crises. She basically intends to save money.

The report by the news agency also mentioned that Kirchner has been taking her horse-drawn carriage work instead of SUV. She even claims that it saves her $264 every month.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD) suffered a crushing defeat in a key German regional election on Sunday, exit polls showed. The likely loss for the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia would be a big blow for Scholz.

German Regional Election Exit Poll: Heavy defeat looms for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's SPD

A heavy defeat is looming for chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats party in a key regional election. Preliminary results from the vote in Germany's most popular state claims that Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats party is about to suffer a crushing defeat.

German Regional Election Exit Poll: SPD suffers a crushing defeat

Election in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany's most populous state is posing an test for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's SPD party just five months after he entered office.

"North Rhine-Westphalia always sends an important signal for federal politics," said Nico Siegel, the executive director of pollster Infratest dimap.

Scholz's SPD has dominated the state for most of the past half-century. The state accounts for fifth of Germany's total population and is home to the rust-belt Ruhr region.

However, SPD lost to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's party CDU in federal elections recently.

Ahead of Sunday's vote, the two parties were very close in the polls, with the CDU having a slight lead at 32% versus 28% for the SPD in a survey published by INSA on Thursday.

"An election victory would radiate, in a positive sense, into discussions about the SPD's strength in the federal government and Olaf Scholz's popularity," Siegel said

The NRW election is also seen giving a boost to Germany's environmentalist Greens party, which could become kingmaker.

The CDU has governed the state in a coalition with business friendly FDP since 2017. But even with its slight lead over the SPD, it might not be able to secure a majority with just the FDP, which stood at 8% in the polls.

The Greens most recently polled around 16%, which means either party is likely to need the Greens to form a state government.

Test for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's party in important state election

Europe's largest economy Germany is rethinking death. In the past, the country, especially the Northern Lutheran faith region, has been known for its orthodox, stern attitude towards death.

However, the country is starting to see death and the expression of grief over a loved one's passing in a completely different way.

Recently the northern city of Bremen played host to a unique exhibition called "Life and Death 2022". This was a funeral fair, organised by Leben und Tod, who deal with the "taboo subject of death" in the public eye.

The exhibition, which was held on the 6th and 7th of May also unveiled a unique way to prolong life digitally.

"Youlo", a play on "You Only Live Once", allows people to record videos and messages for the people left behind; their loved ones. These messages can be preserved for several years in "digital tombstones".

The fair had more than 4000 people show up to learn more about alternative ways to mark their end. For a deeply traditional nation, this marked a change of trend, something for which the coronavirus pandemic and the unprecedented numbers of deaths acted as a catalyst.

Around 136,000 people lost their lives during the pandemic in Germany, which has largely helped in challenging the taboos around death in the European nation.

However, change in Germany has been slower than in other European nations. A huge reason behind this is the strict legal rules on funerals.

For example, a 200-year-old law known as the "Friedhofszwang" bans the burial of coffins and urns anywhere but in a cemetery. This law was originally drafted for hygiene purposes. Under this, the bereaved are not even allowed to take out the ashes of a loved one from a crematorium.

Now the country is relaxing these rules and people are also accepting death as a part of life. In Germany these days people can easily find classes on how to make their own coffin and funeral speech writing has become a profession.

The change in the culture of burials and grief is undoubtedly a step toward dealing with death in a healthier manner.
