Indian PM Modi addresses diaspora in Munich: 'India is the mother of democracy'

The G7 announced $600 billion for global infrastructure programmes in poor countries to compete with China's formidable Belt and Road Initiative on Sunday, as reported by AFP.

Between now and 2027, the US government and allies will shoot for the $600-billion figure "through grants, federal financing, and leveraging private sector investments," the White House said.

The Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, unveiled with fanfare by US President Joe Biden and G7 allies from Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the European Union, aims to fill a huge gap left as communist China uses its economic clout to stretch diplomatic tentacles into the furthest reaches of the world.

Biden said the target was for the United States to bring $200 billion to the table, with the rest of the G7 another $400 billion by 2027.

Funding the kinds of projects that China currently dominates everything from roads to harbours in far-flung corners of the world is not "aid or charity," Biden said.

Highlighting the geostrategic thinking behind the plan, Biden said such projects "deliver returns for everyone, including the American people and the people of all our nations."

As reported by AFP, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen echoed this, saying "it is up to us to give a positive, powerful investment impulse to the world, to show our partners in the developing world that they have a choice."

Unlike China's state-run BRI initiative, the proposed G7 funding would depend largely on private companies being willing to commit to massive investments and is therefore not guaranteed.

According to US officials, however, that is a good thing.

In this capitalist vs communist scenario, US officials say, recipient countries will be able to avoid the debt traps and other strongarm tactics allegedly used by the Chinese.

This weakened, the Group of 7 (G7) countries, the world’s wealthiest, will converge in Germany’s Bavarian Alps to discuss pressing matters like the Russian invasion of Ukraine, sanctions on Russian oil, economic and environmental crises.

On Sunday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will host this year's G7 summit of leaders from France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Canada, and the United States, at a five-star hotel in Elmau.

Apart from that, other countries such as India, Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa have also been invited as part of the grouping’s efforts to broaden the engagement.

Though Ukraine will be the top of the agenda, there are also other pressing issues that will be discussed.

Price cap on Russian oil?

According to Politico, US and other West allies have expressed disappointment that their sanctions are being skirted by countries like India and China—who have turned out to be the biggest buyers of Russian crude due to the discounts being offered by Moscow.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has proposed to tackle this issue with a price cap, meaning the West might lift the embargo for those countries that accepted to only buy Russian oil at an agreed maximum price.

US officials claim that Russia and its oil-purchasing partner countries are struggling to find insurance for tankers, and that the price cap can be used as a leverage in exchange for sanctions relief.

‘Climate club’ and post-Covid economic recovery

At the G7 summit, the German government intends to promote international climate cooperation by establishing a climate club. This club is envisioned to foster the implementation of the Paris climate goals, and better coordinate carbon pricing and other schemes for reducing emissions.

A bigger session with the invited countries and international organisations will discuss ways to make a “clean and just transition to climate neutrality”.

The countries will also deliberate on ways to secure energy supplies and control the global soaring fuel prices. They will also brainstorm on the COVID-19 pandemic, strengthening preparedness and response, and improving the global health architecture.

They will also discuss the darkening global economic outlook, the official said - the challenge being controlling government spending without sending the economy into shock.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold talks with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Schloss Elmau. The bilateral meetings are among the half a dozen bilaterals he will have in Germany. This is the Indian Prime Minister's second visit to Germany in the last two months, the last one being in June to Berlin.

The meeting with the Canadian PM comes even as ties between New Delhi and Ottawa have shown signs of improvement. During the farmer's protests in India in 2020, comments by the Canadian PM had led to friction in ties. Back then India had summoned the then-Canadian envoy to Delhi, Nadir Patel.

When it comes to South Africa, a fellow Brics country, ties have been increased engagement, especially amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Remember India and South Africa had jointly proposed a waiver on Covid vaccine patents at the World Trade Organization. The proposal aimed at the production of more Covid vaccines that helps the developing world.

Indian PM meets Argentina's President later today. He will also hold talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Indonesia is the chair of the G20 this year and next year India will be the chair, which makes the meeting important. India, Indonesia, South Africa, Senegal, and Argentina have been invited to this year's G7 outreach summit. A bilateral with the German Chancellor is natural given he is the host.

PM will address two sessions of the G7 outreach summit. The sessions are on investing in a better future: climate, energy, health and addressing food security and gender equality. This is the third time PM Modi has attended the G7 summit since 2019.

In a major reversal on tackling climate change, Germany is pushing for Group of Seven nations to walk back a commitment that would halt the financing of overseas fossil fuel projects by the end of the year, as energy supplies dwindle due to Russia Ukraine war, as reported by Bloomberg.

On Friday, speaking during a press conference in Brussels, Prime Minister Mario Draghi said Italy has managed to reduce Russian gas imports from 40 per cent last year to 25 per cent at the moment. This has been possible also by signing new gas deals in countries including Congo, Algeria and Angola.

On Thursday, Habeck raised the alert level under Germany's emergency gas plan after supplies of gas from Russia were slashed, bringing Europe's economy one step closer to rationing.

Russian energy giant Gazprom last week reduced deliveries via the Nord Stream pipeline to Germany by 60 per cent, attributing the move to a delayed repair. Germany has dismissed the gas company's technical justification, seeing a "political" motive behind the decision: retaliation for the West's support for Ukraine following Moscow's invasion.

Germany has responded to the cuts by reviving coal plants and providing financing to secure gas supplies. The World Nuclear Association, an industry lobby group, is urging the G7 to boost access to nuclear technologies.

G7 ministers, in making their commitment to end direct international financing of fossil fuels by the end of 2022, acknowledged for the first time that fossil fuel subsidies were incompatible with the Paris Agreement. The group also reaffirmed a commitment to end “inefficient fossil fuel subsidies” by 2025.

The ministers acknowledged, however, that investment in the LNG sector was a necessary response to the current crisis “in a manner consistent with our climate objectives and without creating lock-in effects.

As reported by Bloomberg, Alden Meyer, a senior associate at climate change think tank E3G said, “This would be a huge setback from the progress we made last month at the G7 energy and environment ministers when we finally brought Japan, the last G7 holdout, into the commitment to end such financial support for fossil fuels.”

“Where we saw Chancellor Merkel being the climate chancellor at the last G7 summit Germany hosted, Scholz could go down in history as the climate backtracking Chancellor, which I think would be a real mark on his record, and we don’t need to do this,” he added.

Agreement in German parliament on Friday (June 24) paved way for Nazi-era law that limits information doctors and clinics can provide about abortion.

One of the most controversial sections of the penal code, Paragraph 219a, prohibits the "promotion" of abortion, a crime punishable by "up to two years of imprisonment or a fine".

The law was adopted in 1933 after Adolf Hitler came to power.

"It is high time," Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said in parliament.

He said that it was "absurd" and "no longer in step with the times" that doctor were not able to provide complete information on abortion while "every troll and conspiracy theorists" are free to spout their ideas about terminating pregnancies.

The ruling coalition of Buschmann's Free Democrats, as well as the Social Democrats and the Greens, had made a pledge to remove the law when they signed up to govern together.

The Nazi-era law was applied till recently. The courts have been handing out penalties to medical practitioners for offering information on pregnancy terminations on the internet.

In some cases, the sites offered a simple statement that the gynaecologist carries out abortions, with no further details.

Among the doctors prosecuted in recent years is Kristina Haenel, a general practitioner from Giessen in western Germany, who became the face of the campaign to ditch the law after being fined 6,000 euros ($6,550).

Her legal battle sparked a media storm and put a spotlight on the law.

Nazi-era law on abortion to be removed in Germany

Germany triggers the ‘alarm" level’, the second of three steps under the emergency plan, bringing the country a step closer to the final stage that could see gas rationing in Europe's top economy, as reported by AFP.

Germany moved closer to rationing natural gas on Thursday as it raised the alert level under an emergency plan after Russia slashed supplies to the country. "Gas is now a scarce commodity in Germany," Economy Minister Robert Habeck told reporters at a press conference.

Russia was using gas "as a weapon" against Germany in retaliation for the West's support for Ukraine following Moscow's invasion, Habeck said, with the aim of "destroying" European unity.

But the Kremlin dismissed Germany's suggestion there were political motives behind the limits to supply as "strange".

Germany, like a number of other European countries, is highly reliant on Russian energy imports to meet its needs. Russian energy giant Gazprom cut supplies to Germany via the Nord Stream pipeline by 60 per cent last week, blaming the new limits on delayed repairs.

Germany has dismissed the technical justification provided by Gazprom, instead of calling the move a "political decision".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday there was "no double meaning" in the supply decision. "Our German partners are well aware of the technological servicing cycles of a pipeline. It's strange to call it politics," he said.

The German government expects supply to stop between July 11 and July 25 for annual maintenance on the Nord Stream pipeline.

If deliveries do not resume after the service period, Germany could face a shortage of gas as soon as "mid-December".

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Germany has managed to reduce the share of its natural gas supplied by Russia from 55 per cent to around 35 per cent.

Also Read: In pics: Want to meet mermaids? You might find one in your local community pool The German government expects supply to stop between July 11 and July 25 for annual maintenance on the Nord Stream pipeline. If deliveries do not resume after the service period, Germany could face a shortage of gas as soon as "mid-December". Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Germany has managed to reduce the share of its natural gas supplied by Russia from 55 per cent to around 35 per cent. A number of industries have been using robots for a number of tasks and it looks like the world of bartending has joined the list. A robot in Munich can now create cocktails according to the customers’ orders and the bar regulars have accepted the innovation wholeheartedly. The Sausalitos bars in south Germany is the home of the two-armed robot which is mixing cocktails and helping the staff with the day-to-day jobs. ‘The bar element is our most important element. We are Germany’s largest cocktail chain, so the bar is to us what to others the kitchen is,” Sausalitos manager Christoph Heidt said in a video by Reuters. The bar designed the unique robot along with Inores Robotics AG.

“This industry is suffering from staff shortages which means we would actually very much like to employ more staff if we could find more people willing to work in hospitality,” said Heidt in the video which showed off the various features of the robot. “We will keep the same amount of bar staff we had before, so we are not planning to replace anybody with the robot, rather it aims to be a help.”

The staff working in the bar have accepted the robot as their own. The introduction of the robots has made life easier for them and they were also impressed with how effective the robot has been.
