Europe reels under a scorching summer and one of the continent's major rivers is getting drier with each passing day. Water levels of the Rhine River has fallen dangerously low due to a prolonged drought in Germany which has become a major cause of concern for the people and businesses that depend on it.

A German diplomat was arrested by the police in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday for allegedly killing his Belgian husband and trying to cover up the crime. According to the police report, Uwe Herbert Hahn works at the German consulate, and had reported that his husband died on Friday under mysterious circumstances. Hahn said that his husband – Walter Henri Maximilien Biot – collapsed and hit fatally hit his head. However, the police told AFP that the analysis of the victim’s body and the house in Ipanema showed that he was severely beaten and that resulted in his death.

"The version of events given by the consul, that the victim suffered a fall, is incompatible with the conclusions of the forensics report," officer Camila Lourenco said on social media.

“You cannot switch off death,” says Germany’s cremation consortium chairman, Svend-Joerk Sobolewski. The Russia-Ukraine war has given rise to many crises around the world; inflation, supply chain, and food security. But now, in Germany, another problem has come to light. With the sword of Russian gas supplies being cut off hanging over their heads, Germans now worry: What would happen to their dead? Businesses, including crematoriums, are creating backup plans to deal with the rising prices of gas and the possibility that it won’t be available at all.

As tensions between Russia and Europe get heightened over western sanctions, the whole of Germany is on alert for a possible cut-off of supply by Russian state gas giant Gazprom.

‘You can’t switch off death’: The ‘chilling’ effect of Russia-Ukraine war on Germany’s dead

The World Health Organisation recently released its weekly assessment of the pandemic released on Wednesday (August 3), according to which the new coronavirus cases fell by 9 per cent globally last week but the deaths remained steady. As per the report, 6.5 million virus cases and more than 14,000 fatalities were reported in the previous week. The US, South Korea, and Germany reported the highest numbers of new coronavirus cases. The United States reported the highest number of deaths. The WHO recently expressed concern that countries’ recent reductions in Covid testing and other alert systems have seriously hampered its efforts in monitoring COVID-19.

As per the health organisation, the number of cases decreased in Europe by 35 per cent but increased in the Western Pacific and Asia by nearly 20 per cent and 5 per cent respectively, AP reported.

As the winter season draws closer, the desperation of European nations, especially Germany is visible. Reportedly, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday visited a Siemens Energy factory in the country and stood in front of a gas turbine, bound for the Nord Stream 1 pipeline that had been sent to Canada for maintenance. Scholz stated that the turbine was working fine and that there was no reason that Russia shouldn't take the turbine back and kick the supplies to pre-war levels. "The turbine works. There was nothing mystical to observe here. It's quite clear and simple. The turbine is there and can be delivered, but someone needs to say I want to have it" said Scholz. The turbine conundrum As reported extensively by WION, when Russia closed the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, citing maintenance and that the 12-metre turbine was stuck in Canada for repairs, the entire continent accused Kremlin of throttling gas supplies. At one time, Russia and its state-owned gas company Gazprom which has to supposedly receive the turbine, even threatened to close the supply for good. However, after 10 days, the supply resumed but it still hasn't reached the pre-maintenance levels with reports mentioning that pipeline is only working at 20 per cent of its capacity. WATCH: Germany accuses Russia of delaying turbine delivery × The blame game between Germany and Russia While Scholz demanded that Russia take back the machine and start the supplies, Kremlin blamed the lack of documentation for stalling the return. Moreover, Gazprom stated that the contract for turbine servicing was not honoured. Reportedly, Moscow is miffed that the turbine was transported to Germany without its consent. Some experts are of the view that by refusing to accept the turbine and not increasing the gas supplies through Nord Stream 1, Russia is making the ground for its Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which was shelved by European nations after it invaded Ukraine. Read More: EU asks countries to cut gas use to tackle Russian 'blackmail' Russia wants Europe to accept Nord Stream 2 Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder recently paid a visit to Russian President Vladimir Putin and stated that Russia was prepared to start Nord Stream 2 to supplement Germany and Europe's power demands. However, Scholz was quick to shoot down the suggestion. "We have terminated the approval process, for good reason. There is sufficient capacity at Nord Stream 1, there is no lack." said Scholz. The war has been going on for months and yet the European continent has only been able to reduce their combined gas dependency on Russia by a tiny five per cent. In what comes as a bizarre news, German tourists have been advised by the airport authorities to carry colourful luggage to the airports to curb the menace of lost luggage and avoid baggage handling chaos.

In what comes as a bizarre news, German tourists have been advised by the airport authorities to carry colourful luggage to the airports to curb the menace of lost luggage and avoid baggage handling chaos. The authorities are of the view that carrying colourful luggage would make it easier for the airport attendants to locate as the swarm of black suitcases get harder and harder to differentiate. Frankfurt Airport spokesperson Thomas Kirner was quoted as saying, “Many people travel with black suitcases on wheels which makes identifying them very time-intensive.” According to Kirner, the number of suitcases that had been misplaced or not reached their owners had run into the four-figure mark, despite a decrease in cases the last weeks. Reportedly, there are approximately 2,000 suitcases lying around at the Frankfurt airport currently, waiting to reach their destination. Meanwhile, Stefan Schulte, the head of the airport was of the view that the overwhelming majority of black suitcases in recent weeks has caused an array of difficulties to both airlines and the baggage handlers. Read More: Supply chain constraints and shortage of labour delay Boeing 737 MAX production While the airport has suggested travellers add labels with their names and addresses on their luggage, the police have advised against the practice, terming it a security hazard. The airport is facing troubles at a time when the passenger flow has still not reached the pre-pandemic levels. If the levels do rise, the airport will have difficulties as at the peak of the pandemic, the top hierarchy had announced mass layoffs with nearly 4,000 employees losing their job. The German economy, especially the private sector is growing at its lowest currently. The government is expected to ring in a slew measures to give it a boost. Airports form a major part of the economy and thus, Frankfurt airport may have to rehire some of the fired employees to cope with the scale and not lose any more suitcases. An extra time strike from forward Chloe Kelly gave England a 2-1 win over Germany in the Women's European Championship final on Sunday to claim their first ever major title in front of a record crowd on home soil.

Substitute Kelly reacted quickest to a loose ball from a corner in the second period of extra time to give her side the win and avenge their defeat by Germany in the 2009 Euro final in Helsinki.

England coach Sarina Wiegman became the first manager to win the Euros - men's or women's - with two different nations having led her native Netherlands to the title in 2017. She was appointed England boss in September last year and the side has not lost since.

"I just can’t stop crying. We talk, we talk and we talk and we finally done it. You know what, the kids are alright. This is the proudest moment of my life," England captain Leah Williamson said pitchside.

"Listen the legacy of this tournament is the change in society. The legacy of this team is winners and that is the journey. I love every single one of you, I'm so proud to be English. I'm trying so hard not to swear."

On an unforgettable day for England, the hosts opened the scoring in the 62nd minute through forward Ella Toone in front of a sell-out crowd at Wembley Stadium, the 87,192 attendance a record for a UEFA tournament, men's or women's.

Substitute Lina Magull brought Germany back into the game to send it to extra time but Kelly popped up at the right time to clinch it for England and send the home fans wild.

Germany suffered a blow in the warm-up as striker Alexandra Popp, who had scored six goals in five games in her debut Euros, suffered a muscle injury and had to pull out of the line-up and was replaced by Lea Schuller.

Physical encounter

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's side missed Popp's presence in the box but it was a heavily physical encounter that produced a goalless first half.

Toone opened the scoring shortly after the hour mark with a beautiful chipped finish, moments after coming on as a substitute.

However, that was cancelled out by Magull who fired in an equaliser from close range 17 minutes later after the hosts had been pushed back by their opponents.

The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes to take it into extra time where the atmosphere died down a little as the thought of Germany winning a record-extending ninth Euros crown at the home of English football began to permeate.

That was until the 110th minute when Kelly, who had moments before urged the crowd to raise their voices and cheer the side on, reacted quickest to stab in the winner and inflict Germany's first defeat in a major final.

"It doesn't seem real. I'm buzzing my head off. Honestly the best moment of my career, best moment of my life. I'm so proud to be a part of this group," Toone said.

England's Beth Mead won the Player of the Tournament award for her six goals and five assists, helping her side score a record 22 times during the tournament.

"I am speechless. I’m in shock. I’ve just had a good cry with the family, I wouldn't be here without them," the 27-year-old said.

"I am so, so proud of this team, I love this team and I love this country."

Sebastian Vettel has backed friend and fellow German Mick Schumacher to replace him at Aston Martin when the four times Formula One world champion retires at the end of the season. Vettel, 35, announced his retirement on Thursday with immediate speculation about who might be his successor alongside Canadian Lance Stroll at the British-based team.

"I do have my opinion. I mean, I think very highly of Mick," Vettel told reporters at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the last race before the August break. "I`m obviously not entirely objective, because I`m very close to him. But I do think he`s a great driver. And he`s a learner, he keeps learning when others sort of stall, or stop making progress," he added of the 23-year-old.

"So he does have a lot of qualities, but he`s also very young still, and doesn`t have a lot of experience."
Vettel said that the decision was for the team to make but he would "not hold back" his opinion if asked. The German is close to the Schumacher family, with Mick`s father, the seven times world champion and Ferrari great Michael, a boyhood hero of Vettel`s.

Schumacher senior has not been seen in public since he suffered serious head injuries in a skiing accident in the French Alps in 2013. Vettel has taken on something of a mentor role for Mick since his compatriot joined the Ferrari-powered Haas team in 2021 after winning the Formula Two title.

The Ferrari-backed driver has taken time to open his account, unable to score a point last year but finishing eighth and sixth in Britain and Austria this season. Schumacher is out of contract at the end of the year.

A strike by the ground staff of Germany's national carrier Lufthansa hit operations of the airline on Wednesday (July 27). The strike led to cancellation of more than 1000 flights and added to travel woes of thousands of passengers. A powerful labour union Verdi has called for the strike. The strike is due to run until 6 am (0400 GMT) on Thursday.

The strike has been called to demand greater salary hike than what Lufthansa has offered.

The strike has caused Lufthansa to cancel nearly all flights at Frankfurt and Munich, the airline's domestic hubs.

Reuters quoted a passenger who was om his way from Africa to Paris and was stranded in Frankfurt.

"They say I will be rebooked tomorrow, but nobody was here when we arrived in order to say what we have to do, where we have to go, where we will sleep," said Diego Lambiase, the passenger.

Verdi last month demanded a pay rise of 9.5 per cent. This comes to 350 euros (USD 368) for around 20,000 workers who say inflation has hit them hard.

Lufthansa had offered an increase of 150 euros per month for the rest of this year and another 100 euros from the start of 2023, plus a 2% increase from mid-2023 dependent on the company's financial results

As per government data released by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Destatis, while the country's overall population expanded in 2021, the young population in Germany—those aged 15 to 24—fell to a record low.

Statistics compiled at the end of 2021 revealed that the total population of Germany had topped 83.2 million for the first time. However, just 10% of them were between the ages of 15 and 24, which was the lowest percentage recorded since current records began in 1950.

According to the data, this reached an all-time low of just 8.3 million people in the relevant age group at the end of 2021.

With the exception of 2015, the Destatis data shows that the proportion of young people has been declining since 2005.

According to the report, the extremely high fatality rates during the Covid-19 waves were the primary cause of this development.

Furthermore, the results show that in 2021, the average life expectancy for newborn boys in Germany will be 78.2 years, a decrease of 0.6 years, and for newborn girls it will be 83.2 years, a decrease of 0.4 years.

Despite reaching historic lows, Germany's youth population share of 10.6% is on par with the norm for the European Union, according to a Deutsche Welle analysis.

According to Eurostat data, Germany has a younger population than nations like Spain and Austria but far less than the Republic of Ireland, where young people make up 12.6% of the total population.

Germany's young population drops to record low amid pandemic: Report

Russian natural gas giant Gazprom said on Monday (July 25) that it is cutting gas deliveries through Nord Stream pipeline to 33 million cubic metres a day from Wednesday. This is 20 per cent of the pipeline's capacity. Nord Stream supplies gas to Europe. The state-owned company said that it was stopping operations of one of last two operating turbines because of "technical condition of the engine". Gazprom said that supplies from Portovaya compressor station will be slashed on Wednesday after 7 am Moscow time.

The announcement has elicited reaction from Europe with Germany saying there was no technical jurisdiction for Gazprom's announcement.

"According to the information we have there is no technical reason for a reduction of deliveries," a German economy ministry spokeswoman told AFP.

German group Siemens energy has been charged with maintenance of the turbine. Siemens said in a statement to AFP that there was "no link between the turbine and the gas cuts that have been implemented or announced".

Latest step from Gazprom has come after restoration of gas supply to Europe via Nord Stream last week. The supply was restored after 10 days of maintenace.

Germany is heavily dependent on Russian gas. It has accused Moscow of using gas as a weapon to exert political pressure. Other countries in the West have also alleged that Russia is trying to shoot back after economic sanctions were imposed on it in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.

Gazprom cut flows to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline under the Baltic Sea in recent weeks, blaming the absence of a Siemens gas turbine that was undergoing repairs in Canada.

Earlier Monday, Gazprom said it had received paperwork related to the delayed delivery of the turbine but pointed out a number of issues remained, including those relating to EU and UK sanctions.

Lufthansa, the German national carrier said that it will cancel almost all flight at its hubs in Munich and Frankfurt on Wednesday (July 27) due to a planned strike by ground crew. The one-day walkout has been called by Germany's powerful Verdi union. The airline said in a statement on Tuesday that the strike is likely to have a "massive impact"

The cancellation of flights is likely to affect around 134,000 passengers with more than 1000 flights getting cancelled.

"Lufthansa will have to call off almost the entire flight programme at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich for Wednesday," the group said, adding that a knock-on effect on some flights scheduled for Thursday and Friday could not be ruled out.

The strike is scheduled to last from 0145 GMT on Wednesday to 0400 GMT on Thursday. The strike has been called to demand higher pay rise than the one offered by Lufthansa.

Cancellation of flights is sure to create disturbance in summer air travel across Europe. Travel volume has increased in Europe due to relaxation of Covid rules.

The Verdi union, representing around 20,000 Lufthansa ground staff, is seeking a 9.5-percent pay rise, or at least 350 euros ($360) per month. It also wants a minimum hourly wage of 13 euros.

The union has said management's offer so far "does not come close to compensating for inflation" which stood at 7.6 percent in Germany last month.

Germany overpowered Austria in a 2-0 win to reach the semi-finals of women`s euro 2022 at the Brentford stadium. Germany registered a win over Austria with a fairly dominant performance, allowing the opposition team a little possession. It was still a good matchup between both teams as Austria made some opportunities for themselves, but failed to capitalize with three shots on the post. The Germans hit the post two times in the match. However, missing chances didn`t really hurt them as they were able to take advantage of two defensive errors from Austria and scored on both occasions.

The first goal came from Lina Magull who struck the ball in her team`s favour in the 25th minute to give Germany the lead in the match. The high press tactics of Germany worked as it caused panic and mix-ups in the Austrian back line. The Austria team had already hit the post once before the opening goal and they did it again in the second half as Sarah Puntigam hit the bar from a corner. Germany were going for a second goal as well as one goal lead didn`t seem very comfortable to sit on.

Buhl had the chance from a long-range effort but it went off the bar. The German side kept up their pressing game till the end of the match and it paid off as Zinsberger fumbled again as her clearance came of Alexandra Popp who continued her goal streak in the tournament with a goal in the 90th minute.

It was a nightmare match for the Austrian goal Zinsberger as she gave away two goals to the German side while her team failed to capitalize on the chances created. A victory over Austria with the score of 2-0 also meant that Germany would continue their streak of no goals conceded in the tournament yet.

"We`re very happy to win, we were deserved winners and it was as intense as we expected. Austria played well from set-pieces and at the moment where we didn`t do things well, they hurt us. Thankfully, they didn`t score, which helped us," skysports quoted Germany manager Martina Voss-Tecklenburg as saying.

Michael Schoellhorn, chief executive of Airbus Defence and Space said “I see an inherent risk that we focus too much on satisfying short-term demands by predominantly buying non-European off-the-shelf equipment.”

Not only would this create “additional dependencies” but also undermine Europe’s “long-term technological excellence”, according to Schoellhorn.

The success of the Next Generation Light Anti-tank Weapon, designed by Sweden and assembled by the UK, is one of the most visible examples of how the war could boost the European defence industry.

In comparison with the US (66 per cent, the bloc’s combined spending on defence rose just 20 per cent between 1999 and 2021.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is benefiting Europe’s defence sector amid proposals for greater collaboration on military programmes and the streamlining of weapons manufacturing. Hoping to benefit from the war in Ukraine, hundreds of defence and aerospace executives have assembled for the Farnborough International Airshow. In order to bolster Europe’s status as a cohesive global military power and confront a newly aggressive Russia, members of the European Union are boosting their expenditure on defence projects. “In the past . . . people have been saying this in the context of [defence] budget cuts. And now we are saying it in the context of budget increases,” said Kajsa Ollongren, the Dutch minister of defence. × Before considering new hardware, stockpiles of weapons that have been depleted need to be replenished along with boosting the salaries of the armed forces. Ukraine war is transforming fortune of Europe’s defence sector

Disasters are becoming more frequent and severe. As per a recent ‘horrifying’ officials study released on Monday, weather disasters brought by climate change have cost Germany at least 80 billion euros since the year 2018. The report commissioned by the economy and environment ministries, droughts, floods, and high heatwaves are to be blamed for a rough expenditure of 145 billion euros ($147 billion) in damages that occurred between 2000 and 2021 in Germany mostly occurred in recent years. In Europe’s largest economy, losses in revenue from industries like forestry and farming and damages to infrastructures totaled more than 80 billion euros since 2018, AFP reported.

Steffi Lemke, minister of environment said these horrifying facts showed ‘enormous damage and expenses’ of the climate crisis. Similarly, Robert Habeck, Economy Minister said that in order to keep the impact of the climate crisis at a reasonable level, the country needs to coexist with rapid global action.

The extremely hot and dry summer of 2018 and 2019, and the disastrous floods in the Rhineland a year ago were noted to be the prime destructive point, the study found which indicated accelerating consequences over time.
