Since Moscow announced partial military mobilisation, there have been some pretty unusual images that have been emerging from along the Russian borders, where residents have been seen lining up to immediately flee from the country. Berlin has now urged the Russian deserters to apply for asylum in Germany.

Many experts, studies, and organisations have long advocated against a non-vegetarian diet. They claim that meat is bad for the environment.

Now one organisation is taking activism further, and wants meat-eating men "banned from having sex". The animal rights organisation claims that men who wolf down meat significantly contribute to the climate crisis and are purveyors of "toxic masculinity".

According to the German chapter of the animal rights organisation Peta, men are mostly to blame for the climate crisis since they consume more meat than women. It makes reference to a study published in the scientific journal PLOS One last year that revealed that males generate 41 per cent more greenhouse gases than women due to their eating habits.

The organisation suggests that women should "go on sex strike to save the world" and wants carnivorous men to be banned from reproducing.

"After all, every child not born saves 58.6 tons of CO2-equivalent per year," said Daniel Cox, Peta Germany's team leader for campaigns.

Germany on Sunday (September 25) signed a deal with the United Arab Emirates which will supply liquefied natural gas and diesel. The "energy security" agreement has been signed by both countries as Germany urgently searches for energy sources to replace Russian supplies.

Emirati industry minister Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber termed the deal a "landmark new agreement". He said that the deal "reinforces the rapidly growing energy partnership between the UAE and Germany". The signing of the deal was witnessed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz who is on a visit to UAE. He has met Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.

As part of the deal, the UAE will provide an LNG cargo for delivery in late 2022, to be used in the commissioning of Germany’s floating LNG import terminal at Brunsbuettel, a North Sea port, the statement added.

UAE state oil company ADNOC completed its first ever direct diesel delivery to Germany earlier this month, and will "supply up to 250,000 tons of diesel per month in 2023", it said.

The German leader is touring the Gulf in the hope of sealing new energy deals to replace Russian supplies and mitigate the energy crisis resulting from Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

On Saturday, Scholz metwith Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah, and later Sunday he was due to fly to gas-rich Qatar to hold talks with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

Russians flee 'partial mobilisation'; Berlin extends helping hand to deserters

In a significant development, Germany has said that it is ready to take in Russians fleeing from partial mobilisation ordered by Russian President Vladmir Putin. Germany's interior minister Nancy Faeser confirmed this in an interview to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

"Deserters threatened with serious repression can as a rule obtain international protection in Germany," the minister said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (September 21) ordered partial military mobilisation in Russia to help the country's Ukraine war effort.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. After months of sustained advances, Russian forces have had to retreat in recent weeks. Ukrainian forces have been able to recapture territory from Russian forces in the eastern part of the country.

Germany says ready to take Russians fleeing to evade conscription for partial mobilisation

Germany is all set to nationalize the energy company Uniper in a bit to try and keep the company running and the energy crunch that the country is facing.

Germany to buy stake held by Finnish firm Fortum, fresh deal comprises infusion of $8 billion cash

Germany has nationalised its biggest gas importer – Uniper – in a bid to strengthen its position amid the ongoing energy crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As part of the deal, Germany will be investing more than $7.9 billion in the company and acquire a 98.5 per cent stake.

Previously, Uniper was controlled by the Finnish state-owned company Fortum. According to the energy company, the German government will buy all of their shares for around $495 million.

“Under the current circumstances in the European energy markets and recognising the severity of Uniper’s situation, the divestment of Uniper is the right step to take, not only for Uniper but also for Fortum,” Fortum’s chief executive, Markus Rauramo said in his statement, reports Reuters.

“The role of gas in Europe has changed since Russia attacked Ukraine, and so has the outlook for a gas-heavy portfolio. The business case for an integrated group is no longer viable,” he added.

Germany has been struggling with energy shortages following the sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. The ongoing crisis has also been quite harmful for Uniper which incurred losses of around $8.4 billion with its share prices going down by almost 90 per cent.

"The state will — that's what we're showing now — do everything possible to always keep the companies stable on the market," German economy minister Robert Habeck told Reuters.

Prior to the conflict, Fortum was a major contributor to the Finnish economy but in the past few months, the government in Finland has come under a lot of pressure due to the losses incurred.

Germany nationalises energy giant Uniper to combat global energy crisis

Eon Infotech Limited (E.ON) has informed the German government of a leak at the Isar 2 nuclear power plant, which has not compromised security but could complicate the government's winter energy plan.

Germany: Nuclear reactor leak poses no safety threat but complicates energy plans

E.ON has informed the German government of a leak at the Isar 2 nuclear power plant which has not compromised security but could complicate the government's winter energy plan, the environment ministry said on Monday.

Isar 2, in the southern state of Bavaria, had been scheduled to go offline at the end of the year under Germany's plan to phase out nuclear power. But the war in Ukraine and the subsequent plunge in energy imports from Russia prompted a policy change, with Berlin now planning to keep two of Germany's three remaining reactors, including Isar 2, on standby into next year.

The ministry said that a week-long repair period is needed in October at the Isar 2 plant, which is run by E.ON subsidiary PreussenElektra, during which operations would stop completely.

A spokesperson for E.ON said it was confident that a framework allowing Isar 2 to add to Germany's power supply security beyond December 31 could be agreed with the government.

"Due to the necessary lead times, however, it is now necessary for the ongoing political discussions to quickly lead to a clear result and for all those involved to create planning security as quickly as possible," the spokesperson added.

Germany's environment ministry said that together with the economy ministry it was "examining the new situation and its implications for the design and implementation of the standby reserve" of the Isar 2 development.

The EEX transparency site, where operators have to place mandatory messages on plant outages to the wholesale power market, did not show an entry on Isar 2 for October.

E.ON's spokesperson said it has informed authorities as required by German law.

Volkswagen is targeting a valuation of up to $75.1 billion for luxury sportscar maker Porsche, it said on Sunday, in what will be Germany's second-largest initial public offering (IPO) in history.

Volkswagen will price preferred shares in the flotation of Porsche AG at $76.30 to $82.28 per share, the carmaker said, translating into a valuation of $70. to S75.1 billion.

At the upper end of the range, first reported by Reuters, it would become Europe's third largest IPO on record, according to Refinitiv data. Trading will begin on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on September 29, Volkswagen said.

As part of the listing, 911 million Porsche AG shares will be divided into 455.5 million preferred shares and 455.5 million ordinary shares. Up to 113,875,000 preferred shares, carrying no voting rights will be placed with investors over the course of the IPO.

The sovereign wealth funds of Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Norway as well as mutual fund company T. Rowe Price will subscribe up to $3.67 billion worth of preferred shares as cornerstone investors, at the upper end of the valuation, Volkswagen said.

"We are now in the home stretch with the IPO plans for Porsche and welcome the commitment of our cornerstone investors," Volkswagen Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer Arno Antlitz said.

In line with Volkswagen's agreement earlier in September with its largest shareholder Porsche SE. 25 per cent plus one ordinary share in the sportscar brand, which do carry voting rights, will go to Porsche SE at the price of the preferred shares plus a 7.5 per cent premium.

Porsche SE, the holding firm controlled by the Porsche and Piech families, will finance the acquisition of the ordinary shares with debt capital of up to $7.8 billion, it said in a separate statement.

Total proceeds from the sale will be $17.9 billion to $19.4 billion. If the IPO goes ahead, Volkswagen will call an extraordinary shareholder meeting in December where it will propose to pay 49 per cent of total proceeds to shareholders in early 2023 as a special dividend.

A stock exchange prospectus is expected to be published on Monday, after which institutional and private investors can subscribe to Porsche shares.

A court in western Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate state has sentenced a 50-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing a gas station worker after being told to wear a mask while buying beer.

The accused, who has been identified as Mario N., surrendered last year after police launched a large-scale manhunt in Idar-Oberstein town, where strong anti-mask and anti-vaccine movement was taking place against the government's COVID-19 restrictions.

According to authorities, the perpetrator confessed to shooting 20-year-old student worker Alex W. out of anger” when he was not allowed to purchase beer.

Afterwards, the accused stormed out and returned to the gas station an hour later, but this time wearing a mask.

Soon, an argument broke out between the two men, following which Mario N. pulled a concealed revolver out of his pocket and shot the worker before fleeing the scene.

During the trial, prosecutor Nicole Frohn said that Mario N. had felt increasingly angry and saw the curb measures as an infringement on his rights, reports DW.

"Since he knew he couldn't reach the politicians responsible, he decided to kill him (Alex W.)," she said, according to AFP news agency.

On Tuesday, Mario N. was convicted of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, and he was handed a life sentence.

Under German law, those convicted of life sentence can seek parole after 15 years. His defence team were trying to dilute his sentence from murder to manslaughter, but the court rejected their argument.

(With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Learning the lesson of being overtly dependent on a single country for its needs in the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Germany is looking to make amends. The European country is now mulling plans to reduce its dependence on Chinese raw materials by chalking up a new trade deal.

Reportedly, Economy Minister Robert Habeck stated that Germany couldn't be allowed to be blackmailed by other countries.

"We cannot allow ourselves to be blackmailed. If [the Chinese market] were to close, which is not likely at the moment...we would have extreme sales problems," said Habeck.

The minister also noted that 'there is no more naivety' regarding the country's policy while dealing with trade partners. Habeck added that he was against China’s Cosco buying a stake in a container operator at Germany’s Hafen Hamburg port.

“I’m leaning towards the fact that we don’t allow that." said Habeck.

Authorities in Switzerland have selected a site in the northern pary of the country, close to the German border, for a storage facility for nuclear waste. The storage facility will be deep underground. Switzerland is starting its "project of the century" which will include burying spent nuclear fuel deep underground in clay.

The organisation in charge of handling the country's radioactive waste said Saturday it had decided that the Nordlich Lagern region was the best of three sites it had been considering for the underground storage facility.

We "chose Nordlich Lagern as the safest site for a deep geological repository," Felix Glauser, a spokesman for the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra), told AFP in an email, confirming a report by Swiss news agency Keystone-ATS.

"Extensive investigations have shown that Nordlich Lagern is the most suitable site and has the largest safety reserves," he added.

Keystone-ATS reported that Nagra has informed the local populace and is expected to present the proposal to government on Monday.

Final decision from the government is unlikely to come until 2029. The issue will then likely go to a referendum.

Switzerland has opearted nuclear power plants for more than half a century. However, the country decided to phase out nuclear power after 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

For now, the waste is being stored in an "intermediary depot" in Wurenlingen, some 15 kilometres from the German border.

With the new facility, Switzerland hopes to join an elite club of countries closing in on deep geological storage.

It's barely been a week since Gazprom announced an extended halt of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline but the doomsday predictions have already started rolling in. Reportedly, German energy giant Uniper and its CEO have warned that the worst is yet to come for the continent of Europe. “I have said this a number of times now over this year and I’m also educating policymakers. Look, the worst is still to come,” said Klaus-Dieter Maubach, Uniper CEO. Adding that the wholesale prices had shot exponentially, Maubach called for an open discussion amongst the stakeholders. “What we see on the wholesale market is 20 times the price that we have seen two years ago. 20 times. That is why I think we need to have really an open discussion with everyone taking responsibility on how to fix that,” It is pertinent to note that Uniper, Germany's biggest importer of gas has been hit hard by the reduction in gas supplies from Russia. The company was in such dire straits that the German government in July had to bail out the company with a $15.24 billion bailout package. However, after the G7 group of nations reached a consensus on price capping, Kremlin quickly announced that new leaks had been discovered in the pipeline, leading to an indefinite halt. Earlier today, Gazprom stated that the resumption of the pipeline depended on Seimens, the German company. When asked when the pipeline would resume pumping gas again, Gazprom's Deputy Chief Executive Vitaly Markelov on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in the far-east city of Vladivostok stated, "You should ask Siemens. They have to repair equipment first." Read more: 'You should ask Siemens', Gazprom on the resumption of Nord Stream 1 pipeline (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Jared Kushner, the right-hand and son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump in an interview stated that the Ukraine-Russia war would have never taken place if Trump had still been in power. Kushner, who had a tumultuous brief period as Trump's adviser, claimed that Trump and his policies had brought peace to Europe and pushed China onto the 'backfoot'. “We had peace in Europe, peace in the world. China was on the backfoot. Now, we have a war in Ukraine with Russia — that never would have happened,” said Kushner in an interview with SkyNews. Kushner also said that Trump was laughed at when he warned Germany of being overly reliant on Russia for the gas supplies. It is pertinent to note that in a public address, Trump had suggested that Germany should not be reliant on Russian gas. And ever since the war broke out, Berlin has been running from pillar to post, attempting to fill its reserves ahead of a bitter winter as Moscow halts the supply of natural gas via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. To ease inflation in the country, Germany's ruling coalition has agreed on a $65 billion inflation relief package. Reportedly, the package will help reduce the financial strain on households as Russian gas supplies remain halted with no timeline of resumption laid out by Moscow. This is the third relief package to be doled out by the German government which takes the total to $95 billion. This particular relief package will include tax breaks for energy-intensive companies and cheap public transport for the citizens. Moreover, under the plan, a $300 one-off payment will be provided to millions of pensioners to battle the soaring energy bills. Similarly, students will be given a slightly smaller $200 one-off payment. Those receiving housing benefits will also receive some kind of monetary help for the rising heating costs. However, the biggest talking point is the $1.5 billion earmarked for public transport. Earlier, Germany had launched a $9 monthly ticket for travel in local and regional transport systems which was a huge hit. The Deutsch government is planning a successor to this scheme which will be priced slightly higher than its previous iteration. "Timely and proportionate relief for citizens and businesses is necessary due to the rapidly increasing burden of high energy prices," Germany's coalition partners were quoted as saying by AFP. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in response to the new package said his government had made 'timely decisions' and that, "We will get through this winter." It is pertinent to note that inflation in Germany rose to eight per cent in the month of August, primarily due to the reduction in gas supplies. Germany's new ambassador to India Dr Philipp Ackermann has called China claiming the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as "outrageous" and that "infringement at border is extremely difficult and should not be accepted", in response to a WION question.
