Earlier today, Germany’s Interior Ministry indicated that the head of the country’s national cybersecurity agency, Arne Schoenbohm, has been sacked. This comes after media reports alleged that a member company of the group co-founded by Schoenbohm, was created by a former Russian intelligence agent.

The decision announced by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser followed allegations in German media which “damaged the necessary confidence of the public in the neutrality and impartiality” of his management.

The German government had said over a week ago that they will investigate the reports comprehensively in light of these allegations.

Schoenbohm, who has been sacked as head of the country’s President of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), told German media he was unaware of “what the ministry has examined and what the concrete allegations against me look like.”

According to reports, nearly a decade ago, Schoenbohm had co-founded a cybersecurity group which brings together experts from public and private institutions. German media reported that one of its members was a company that was founded by a former Russian agent. However, the group said that they had removed the company last week.

The interior ministry said Faeser’s decision would not only be beneficial for the 1,500 employees of the agency but Schoenbohm himself, saying that they would now be able to work without any speculations about the personal issue, said the report.

Schoenbohm has been the head of the BSI since 2016. The ministry has not said who would take over after him. This comes amid growing concerns about attacks against Germany’s critical infrastructure by Moscow given Berlin’s support for Ukraine in the ongoing Russian invasion of the country.

Germany: Cybersecurity chief dismissed following media reports of ties with Russia

A French court has ordered a formal investigation of German pharmaceutical firm Merck for failing to inform patients about the side effects of its thyroid drug, Levothyrox.

The lawyer representing Merck’s France unit, Mario-Pierre Stasi, has assured that the company would cooperate with the investigative authorities saying that all legal proceedings must be allowed to run their course.

On Tuesday, the pharma company was charged with “aggravated deceit” after its president was questioned by a judge in southern Marseille city.

Merck said the ruling did not raise concern on the quality of the new formula for Levothyrox, and added that it would provide “all necessary information to show there was no criminal fault of any kind”, reports AFP.

According to Merck, France is the world’s biggest consumer of Levothyrox, with around 2.5 million users taking the drug.

In 2017, a new version of Levothyrox was introduced. However, around 30,000 people in France complained of headaches, insomnia, hair loss or dizziness from taking the new concoction.

Levothyrox drug is used to treat underactive thyroids or following surgery for cancer of the organ, which regulates the body’s metabolism.

The patients accused Merck of misleading them about the potential new side effects, following which a petition was filed calling on the company to bring back the old formula. The petition had gained around 170,000 signatures.

In march 2022, the French Supreme Court rejected the company’s appeal against a lower court’s ruling in 2020 that ordered Merck to compensate 3,300 plaintiffs in a civil case.

The FIFA World Cup is set to kick off next month, on November 20, in Qatar. It is to be noted that Qatar will be the first Arab state to host the World Cup and, hence, the excitement of the football fans knows no boundaries. Ahead of the mega event's commencement, Argentina captain Lionel Messi picked his favourites and has not named his own side.

Messi, who has announced that he will be playing his World Cup, will be eager to take his side to the coveted title in Qatar. However, when asked to pick his favourites, the 35-year-old has named Neymar-starrer Brazil and France as the two of the strongest contenders.

"We always say the same great teams... but, if I have to choose, Brazil and France are the two great candidates to win the World Cup. They've had the same group (of players) for a long time, working well," Messi said during an interview with DirectTV Sports.

"France, aside from the last Euros when they were eliminated (in the last 16) and did badly, they have some impressive players. They have a clear idea and the same coach (Didier Deschamps). Brazil is a bit the same (under Tite)," he added.

Talking about Argentina, the Messi-starrer have also been in good form in the recent past. They are heading into the marquee tournament with an unbeaten streak of 35 games (since 2019). In fact, they are just two more matches away to surpass Italy's tally to remain unbeaten for the most number of matches.

In last year, Messi-led Argentina had won the Copa America, beating Brazil to clinch the continental trophy. Hence, Messi & Co. also have the winning momentum under their belt and will look to go the distance this time around in the World Cup. In last edition of the World Cup, Argentina had lost to eventual winners France, 4-3, to bow out in the Round of 16.

As the power crisis looms in Germany following sanctions on Russian gas, Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday announced to keep three of its remaining nuclear power plants in operation at least until mid-April.

Scholz said that a legal basis would be created to allow these nuclear plants to function for further time.

"The legal basis will be created to allow the operation of the nuclear power plants Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 and Emsland beyond December 31, 2022, until April 15, 2023," Scholz said in a statement.

Scholz also requested the and asked the economy, environment and finance ministries to work out an "ambitious" law to increase energy efficiency, and put into law an agreement to phase out coal by 2030.

Germany had six power plants running that accounted for 13.3 per cent of the nation’s electricity supply in 2021. Of those, three were shut down by the end of 2021 under its 2011 phase-out plan, while the rest were due to cease operation by the end of 2022.

However, this plan was again called into question after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February this year, which prompted the West-led US to impose sanctions to curb funding of gas money into the war.

Russia supplies about 40 per cent of the European Union's gas. And Germany relies on Moscow for 55 per cent of its gas needs.

Though it has managed to reduce this to 35 per cent and wants eventually to reduce imports to zero, Germany has been mulling to increasing use of coal and extending the life of power stations despite the negative environmental impact.

Moreover, multiple leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and the Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, which connect Russia to Europe, have prompted Kremlin to cut gas deliveries significantly to European countries.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Saturday called for reforms of the European Union to make it fit for the admission of new countries as well as more military autonomy for the 27-country bloc.

Speaking at the Congress of the Party of European Socialists in Berlin, Scholz advocated for gradually abolishing the principle of unanimity for decisions in foreign policy, but also in other areas such as tax policy.

“I know that we still have a lot of convincing to do there,” the chancellor said. “But I also say clearly: if a geopolitical Europe is our aspiration, then majority decisions are a gain and not a loss of sovereignty.”

Currently, many EU decisions can only be made if all countries vote unanimously.

Scholz also supports more military autonomy of the EU. He called for coordinated procurement of weapons and equipment, the establishment of an EU rapid reaction force by 2025, and for an EU headquarters for European armed forces.

“In Europe, we need better interplay between our defense efforts," he said. "In the future, Europe will need a coordinated increase in capabilities...we must confidently and jointly advance European defence.”

Days after refusing to share the findings of its probe into the explosions of Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines with Russian authorities, Sweden has also rejected plans to set up a joint investigation team with allies, citing national security. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on Thursday ruled that companies in the EU can ban headscarves (hijab) as long as it is a general prohibition and does not directly discriminate against employees.

“The internal rule of an undertaking prohibiting the visible wearing of religious, philosophical or spiritual signs does not constitute direct discrimination if it is applied to all workers in a general and undifferentiated way,” judges said.

This case was regarding a Muslim woman who was told by a Belgian company that she cannot wear her headscarf during her six-week work traineeship, said a Reuters report. After a meeting of EU energy ministers in Prague, EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson said the European Commission would lay out plans to develop an alternative EU gas price benchmark, and quickly launch joint gas buying among EU countries. Simson said, however, it was still unclear if there was enough support among countries for a price cap on gas used for power generation to be added to the October 18 package; a move many countries have sought. "We will see over the weekend how we can proceed with capping the gas for power generation, if this is at that stage that we can say that there is a broad majority of member states supporting this measure," she said, adding that the package would set out how a "temporary mechanism" to limit gas prices could work, and the risks it would entail. Czech Industry Minister Jozef Sikela said ministers had agreed joint gas buying should launch by next summer, and that the Czech Republic - which holds the EU's rotating presidency - would call an emergency meeting of ministers in November to approve the upcoming proposals. "I firmly believe that today's meeting has helped to bridge the divergent views between the member states," Sikela said. Iberian example With gas prices almost 90 per cent higher than a year ago, most EU countries say they want a gas price cap, but have struggled to agree on its design - be it a price cap on all gas, pipeline gas, or just gas used to produce electricity. Spain and Portugal capped the price of gas used in power generation in June, which helped curb local power prices. Support has built among other EU countries to roll it out EU-wide, although some warn it could raise gas demand across the bloc since Spain's gas use increased under the measure. The meeting outcome aligned with many of the measures suggested in a proposal by Germany and the Netherlands who warn broad gas price caps could leave Europe struggling to attract supplies while swerving the cap that 15 other EU states have urged Brussels to propose. The German and Dutch proposal, seen by Reuters, backed an alternative benchmark gas price, joint gas buying and negotiating lower prices with non-Russian suppliers as well as tighter targets to save gas this winter. Norway's energy minister Terje Aasland, who joined Wednesday's meeting along with other European non-EU members, said his country "doesn't recommend" a gas price cap. European gas prices surged after Russia slashed gas deliveries to Europe following its invasion of Ukraine, blaming the cuts on Western sanctions imposed over the conflict. EU countries have already rushed through emergency energy windfall profit levies, gas storage filling obligations, and electricity demand curbs to address the surge in energy prices. But the pressure to agree more EU-wide measures has increased after Germany said it would spend up to $194 billion to shield its consumers and businesses from high energy costs - prompting a backlash from some countries about the uneven rollout of national support. A leak has been detected on Tuesday evening by Polish pipeline operator PERN in one line of the Druzhba pipeline, which carries oil from Russia to Europe, the operator said on Wednesday. Authorities said that the leak was probably caused by an accident, though the event may still stoke concerns about the security of Europe's energy supplies even as it faces a severe energy crisis since Moscow cut gas supplies to the region after invading Ukraine in a continuing stand-off. As per PERN, the leak was detected in a section of the pipe around 70 kilometres from the central Polish city of Plock. The second line of the pipeline and other elements of infrastructure was working as normal. On being asked about a possibility of sabotage, Poland's top official in charge of energy infrastructure Mateusz Berger told news agency Reuters by telephone: "Here we can talk about accidental damage. We are living in turbulent times, different connotations are possible, but at this stage we have no grounds at all to believe that." The chief of the federal agency in charge of cybersecurity, Arne Schönbohm, is under consideration for termination by German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser due to his alleged contacts with Russian security service agents, according to German newspapers, which cited unnamed government sources.

The Federal Office for Information Security is led by Schönbohm (BSI). However, a recent inquiry discovered that he was also a member of a technological group that includes a German business that is a subsidiary of a Russian cybersecurity firm created by a former KGB employee among its members.

The Interior Ministry said that it "takes the matters reported over the weekend seriously and is investigating them comprehensively."

A scheduled joint appearance of Faeser and Schönbohm on Thursday to present the BSI Situation Report 2022 has reportedly been called off.

Russian strike hits German embassy in Kyiv: Reports

Anna Sorokin, the young Russian-German woman who bilked wealthy New Yorkers while pretending to be an heiress herself, has said she would fight deportation to Germany after her recent release from prison.

The 31-year-old Sorokin, whose extraordinary story inspired a fictionalized series on Netflix and who has been a social-media phenomenon, was freed on bail late Friday and immediately placed under house arrest, with an ankle bracelet confining her to her modest Manhattan apartment.

She had spent the last year and a half in a detention center north of New York City operated by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, known as ICE, convicted of overstaying her tourist visa.

Sorokin was first arrested in 2017, then sentenced in 2019 to two years in a New York detention center on charges including grand larceny. No sooner had she served that sentence -- she was released early for good behavior -- than ICE agents detained her.

Since February she has faced a deportation order to Germany, but in a weekend interview in her Manhattan building with The New York Times, Sorokin said she was fighting to stay in the United States.

"Letting them deport me would have been like a sign of capitulation -- confirmation of this perception of me as this shallow person who only cares about obscene wealth, and that's just not the reality," she told the Times.

"I could have left," Sorokin added, "but I chose not to because I'm trying to fix what I've done wrong. I have so much history in New York and I felt like if I were in Europe, I'd be running from something."

Passing herself off in 2016 and 2017 as Anna Delvey -- a German heiress who claimed to have a fortune of $60 million -- Sorokin insinuated herself into the upper reaches of New York society, persuading members of the elite to invest in an exclusive arts club bearing her name.

She had a rare talent for spinning elaborate lies with a preternatural poise that made them seem believable.

Sorokin obtained tens of thousands of dollars in loans, free trips on a private jet and accommodation in some of New York's swankiest boutique hotels.

In all, prosecutors said, she swindled the unsuspecting out of $275,000.

The Russian-born Sorokin, who holds German citizenship, is the daughter of a truck driver and a shopkeeper who emigrated to Germany in 2007.

In her oversized designer glasses that were something of a trademark, she frequented the fashion worlds of London and Paris before moving to New York in 2013 for Fashion Week.

Her story eventually caught the attention of American producer Shonda Rhimes ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal"), who turned it into the Netflix miniseries "Inventing Anna," starring Julia Garner.

'Sabotage' halts northern Germany rail network

The purposeful cutting of two critical rail network cables on Saturday morning in northern Germany resulted in a nearly three-hour suspension of all train operations. Authorities referred to the incident as an act of sabotage without identifying the perpetrator.

Interior minister Nancy Faeser stated that the event is being investigated by the federal police and that there is no indication as to why it occurred.

The interruption had an impact on international train travel to Denmark and the Netherlands as well as rail services via the states of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein and the city-states of Bremen and Hamburg.

Germany, France, Denmark, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic have submitted 16 proposals for new European Union sanctions against Iran for its violent crackdown on protests over women's rights, a German foreign ministry source said on Monday.

The proposed measures would target people and institutions primarily responsible for the clampdown on nationwide protests that were ignited by the death in policy custody of a young woman, the source added.

Those proposing the sanctions are aiming for the EU foreign ministers to decide on them at their meeting on Oct. 17, with no resistance expected from the members of the bloc, Spiegel magazine, which reported the news first, said.

"We are now working flat out to implement these proposals," the source said.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Monday that Iran's suppression of protests was "an expression of sheer fear of education and the power of freedom" and promised sanctions.

"It is also difficult to bear that our foreign policy options are limited. But we can amplify their voice, create publicity, bring charges and sanction. And that we are doing," Baerbock tweeted.

The anti-government protests, which began at 22-year-old Mahsa Amini's funeral on Sept. 17 in the Kurdish town of Saqez, have spiralled into the biggest show of opposition to Iran's authorities in years, with many calling for the end of more than four decades of Islamic clerical rule.

Iran Human Rights, a Norway-based group, has said more than 100 people have been killed. Iranian authorities have not given a death toll, while saying many members of the security forces have been killed by "rioters and thugs backed by foreign foes".

Last week state television said 41 people had died, including members of the security forces.

Germany, France, Denmark, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic have submitted 16 proposals for new European Union sanctions against Iran for its violent crackdown on protests over women's rights, a German foreign ministry source said on Monday.

Germany, others in EU plan Iran sanctions over protests clampdown

Germany's Federal Statistical Office said on Tuesday (September 27) that the country's population has shot up to its highest level due to influx of refugees from Ukraine. Germany is Europe's most populous country.

Germany has one of the world's lowest fertility rates and by some measures it has most aged population. But its wealth, demand for labour and relatively open immigration policy made it an attractive target for migrants even before the EU opened its doors to Ukrainians fleeing their country after Russia's invasion in February.

The Federal Statistical Office released a report on Tuesday and said that population had grown by 1%, or 843,000 people, in the first half of 2022. In comparison, during the whole of year 2021, Germany's population grew only by 0.1 per cent.

Since German reunification, considerable growth in population has only been observed thrice. And each time it had links to wave of refugees.

In 1992, refugees from the war in former Yugoslavia helped swell the population by 700,000. In 2015, Germany let in almost a million refugees from war in the Middle East.

Germany's female population grew by 1.2%, significantly more than its male population, which increased by 0.8%, reflecting the fact that mainly women and children fled the war in Ukraine. Men of fighting age are forbidden from leaving the country.
