Calling for better public transport and cycle lanes, approximately 8,500 cyclists prevented motorists from using a stretch of Germany's autobahn.

The cyclists covered a distance of 40 km (25 miles) and the demonstration took place between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden.

From children to old people, the bicyclists included a vast variety of people some of which had travelled as much as nine hours just to participate in the protest.

In order to make transport in the German state of Hesse climate-neutral by 2030, the Verkehrswende Hessen organised the protest.

According to Frank Masurat, the chairman of the German Cyclists Association (ADFC), ''For decades, tens of thousands of people have been fighting for better conditions for bicycle traffic at our annual protests.''

Highlighting that it is time for Berlin to implement plans for a new bike lane network as well as mobility transmission, Masurat said it is time for deeds.

The German government had declared that hundreds of kilometres of safe bike lanes will be installed by 2026 to protect cyclists from motorised traffic.

The new German Ambassador to India Dr Philipp Ackermann, in his first ever interview since presenting his credentials to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, has said the new government in Berlin has a "clear focus on India". Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, he said, "We will see in coming months more activity at the highest levels and my task will be to really work on this strategic relationship."

In his first official work, Dr Ackermann inaugurated an air purifier tower. He also spoke about Russia-Ukraine conflict, pointing, "These are tough times in Europe, and everybody knows we have a very difficult winter to face in many respects."

Sidhant Sibal: Key focus priorities for you. You have just presented your credentials, what do you expect?
Dr Philipp Ackermann: India and Germany have strategic partnership that goes back a long, long time. We have to do utmost to intensify and deepen this strategic partnership. We were very happy PM Modi was twice in Germany this year, in May and in June. We have seen that the new German government's clear focus is India, and we will see in coming months more activity at the highest levels and my task will be to really work on this strategic relationship. I think time is wonderful and environment is very conducive, and I am looking forward to a very fruitful stay in India.

Sidhant Sibal: How do you see the Green partnership between the two countries? And perhaps about the air purifier you have inaugurated?
Dr Philipp Ackermann: The partnership for sustainable development was concluded in Berlin in May. I think this will be guiding principle for my time in India in many ways. I think we should do everything to fight climate change, pollution, to improve biodiversity, these are planet's problem & every country suffers from it. India and Germany are very strong partner in it. This project is very unique, because it is not a government project, but a project that has materialized by cooperation by two German companies very busy in India. I think this is very interesting, and speaking of that, this is not only government to government, business to business, business in this case donator of this wonderful idea. I am very proud; Germany-India relationship is not only official political government to government relationship but private partnership between relevant firms and enterprises here. Dr Philipp Ackermann: I was very, very overwhelmed by the ceremony this morning, this is a fantastic venue this Ashoka hall in Rashtrapati Bhawan, the protocol is fantastic and very dignified and impressive. I met the President, she is a very very kind and gracious woman. A woman who knows her way, and she was very nice in the bilateral talk. I had the best impression. I am very happy that she is now the President of India. This morning was a very great moment for me.

Sidhant Sibal: If you can tell our readers about yourself.
Dr Philipp Ackermann: Look I have been in Delhi because I have served in Delhi before, between 2007 to 2010. I have the best memories. After 12 years a country has changed to a certain extent, I realise that every day, but some things stay the same. I feel, it is homecoming of sorts, and I am looking forward to interacting not only with government as I said before, but many Indians across the board.

Sidhant Sibal: Your comments on Ukraine Russia conflict, and India's policy?

Europe is possibly staring at a winter of unrest. Energy prices across the continent have soared over fears that Moscow will halt gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. In a bid to combat rising prices, European countries are now releasing dire warnings and introducing new measures to try and deal with the energy uncertainty.

Germany has been criticised by a global watchdog for failing to do enough to tackle money laundering, such as by prosecuting very few for the crime despite being one of the globe's biggest cash centres.

The report by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global body that groups countries from the United States to China to tackle financial crime, deals a blow to the standing of Germany, which prides itself on a reputation for probity.

The assessment highlights a series of failings, including a lack of control of those who handle large sums of money, such as estate agents, adding that while Germany understood the risks, it had not done enough to tackle them.

The FATF criticised, for instance, the disjointed nature of supervision, with more than 300 regional authorities responsible for monitoring such players, as well as a shortage of personnel.

Germany's score lags far behind France, which the FATF also recently assessed. The poor ranking means Germany will now have to report annually to the body in the coming years about its progress in tackling shortcomings.

Germany's finance minister, Christian Lindner, has acknowledged the problem and pledged to centralise control, install additional staff and modernise the authorities' technology.

"We deal with the small fish, while the big fish get away," he told journalists earlier this week before the report's publication, adding that he would step up efforts to "follow the money".

The FATF said Germany prosecuted about 1,000 people for money laundering in 2020, despite opening more than 37,000 inquiries, a level of convictions it considered "very small".

Germany has more banks than other countries in the European Union while many Germans prefer using cash, which the FATF said made up three-quarters of transactions. There is no upper limit on the size of cash transactions.

The FATF also flagged money laundering risks from hawala payments, which means 'transfer' in Arabic. The system is widely used in the Middle East, moving payments through a trusted network of agents who operate outside banks.

Germany has 11 million international migrants, the third-largest globally, according to the report.

The FATF urged Germany to take "additional measures ... to more effectively mitigate the risks in relation to cash and hawala services".

Konrad Duffy of Finanzwende, a group that lobbies for financial transparency, said German authorities needed more powers to tackle money laundering and that rules should be tightened to prevent buying properties in cash.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday (August 23) said that Germany planned to send more arms worth USD 498.55 million to Ukraine, reports Reuters quoting sources. The report has come on the eve of Ukraine's Independence Day. Ukraine will celebrate its 31st Independence Day on August 24.

Scholz made the announcement as he participated in an online conference on Ukraine which took place in Toronto. Germany plans to supply three additional Iris-T air defence systems, a dozen armoured recovery vehicles, 20 rocket launchers, precision ammunition and anti-drone systems.

These weapons will be delivered in 2023, some of them possibly sooner. A source quoted by Reuters said that Germany's parliamentary budget committee must still approve the supplies which Scholz described as a contribution to the modernization of Ukraine's armed forces.

Ukraine is on high alert as it celebrates its Independence Day. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already said that Russia might do something 'ugly' on Ukraine's Independence Day. Yuriy Sak, adviser to Ukraine's defence minister, confirmed the high-alert status of Ukraine.

The celebrations will be muted this year and large gatherings have been banned in the capital Kyiv.

There is also a mounting concern after Russia accused Ukrainian intelligence of being behind the assassination of the daughter of a prominent ultranationalist intellectual in Moscow on Saturday.

Visiting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday to discuss access to alternative energy sources as his nation works to swiftly reduce its dependency on Russian oil and gas.

On the first day of his three-day tour, Scholz stated at a joint news conference in Montreal that Germany is expediting the development of pipelines and LNG ports infrastructure in order to enhance imports and is contacting other countries, such as Canada, to expand output.

He added: "It is indispensable because we want to move away from our dependency on Russian gas supplies," indicating that as Germany transitions to a more renewable energy source, the country would require more liquid natural gas.

Scholz is also interested in potential hydrogen exports from Canada. The two leaders will visit a potential hydrogen manufacturing site in the province of Newfoundland on Tuesday together with a sizable business delegation.

"A reliable supplier of the clean energy that a net-zero (emissions) world requires," claimed Trudeau of Canada. However, he minimised the prospect of direct LNG shipments from Canada to Germany, pointing to the great distance between the gas reserves in Western Canada and the Atlantic ports for export.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has denied allegations of impropriety in his handling of a multibillion-euro tax scam while serving as the mayor of Hamburg at a session before parliamentarians. The case threatens to discredit him even as he deals with other difficulties.

In the "cum-ex" or "dividend stripping" plan, banks and investors would quickly exchange shares of corporations on the day of their dividend release, obscuring stock ownership and enabling several parties to fraudulently claim tax refunds on dividends.

As per Aljazeera, the now-closed loophole gained political significance in Hamburg's northern port because Scholz's administration was slow to demand that the local bank Warburg pay back millions of euros it had earned under the plan.

After the federal finance ministry intervened, Warburg, which has a significant presence in Germany's second-largest city, finally made good on its around 50 million euro ($50.3 million) tax debt.

“I did not exert any influence on the Warburg tax case,” Scholz said on Friday during his second appearance in front of a Hamburg parliamentary committee of inquiry into the cum-ex affair, one of Germany’s biggest post-war corporate scandals.

“There is nowhere even the tiniest suggestion that I agreed anything,” he said, referring to other testimonies before the committee.

Scholz might be asked to testify in front of MPs a third time, according to Richard Seelmaecker, a representative of the opposition conservatives on the committee, as fresh information from the probe was just starting to emerge.

Even as the chancellor struggles to keep his fractured coalition together in the face of popular dissatisfaction with skyrocketing energy prices, the case threatens to destabilise him.

Just 58 percent of Germans believe he is doing a good job, compared to an average of nearly 70 percent for his predecessor Angela Merkel throughout her 16 years in office. His popularity is already lower than that of his economy and foreign ministers.

Germany is sending 13 military aircraft to joint exercises in Australia, the air force's largest peacetime deployment, underlining Berlin's increased focus on the Indo-Pacific amid rising tensions with China in the region.

Last year, a German warship sailed into the South China Sea for the first time in almost 20 years, a move that saw Berlin joining other Western nations in expanding its military presence in the region amid growing alarm over Beijing's territorial ambitions.

Tensions have also risen over Taiwan since China - which claims Taiwan as its own territory - kicked off military drills around the democratically governed island after US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei at the start of August.

On Monday, six Eurofighter jets took off from a base in Neuburg an der Donau in southern Germany and three A330 tankers from Cologne for the three-day flight to Australia where they will, together with four German A400M transporters that have already left, join 16 other nations in the biennial exercise Pitch Black.

During the deployment, which includes detours to Japan and South Korea, the pilots will conduct almost 200 mid-air refuellings of the fighter jets, German air force chief Ingo Gerhartz told reporters ahead of the mission.

Asked whether the war planes will pass the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, two flashpoints of tensions with China in the region, Gerhartz said the aircraft would use civilian air traffic routes and that no passage of the Taiwan Strait was planned.

"The South China Sea, Taiwan - these are obviously the sticking points in the region," he told reporters. "We will fly at an altitude of more than 10 km and barely touch the South China Sea, and we will move on international routes."

Gerhartz said that, with the deployment, he was rather aiming to send a signal to Germany's partners than China: "I don't think we are sending any threatening message towards China by flying to an exercise in Australia."

The general was echoed by Australia's ambassador to Germany, Philip Green, who stressed there was no reason why Beijing should see a regular exercise as destabilising to the region.

"We are seeking a region which will be stable, peaceful and prosperous, strategic equilibrium where each country can take their own sovereign choices," Green said when asked about the message for China.

German fighter jets en route to Australia as Berlin shifts focus to Indo-Pacific

The global energy crisis has led the German government to impose a new gas tax on households. The increased rates will be effective from October 1st and last till April 2024. Under the new levy, an average family of four is expected to pay almost $500 more per year and businesses will also be subjected to these new charges.

WION Climate Tracker | Germany imposes winter gas tax despite concerns

A winter gas surcharge for German homes and companies was set on Monday at 2.4 euro cents per kilowatt hour and will go into effect in October.

Due in large part to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, gas prices have increased, raising concerns about the security of the energy supply as well as, in certain cases, delivery gaps.

Due to businesses' inability to pass on their rising expenses, consumers have thus far mostly been sheltered from the rises. However, this is set to change.

Trading Hub Europe, the organisation in charge of directing and coordinating the German gas market, made the decision about the levy's dollar amount. However, the government has previously stated that the rate should probably fall between 1.5 cents and 5 cents.

The levy's stated purpose is to help gas providers who are now paying higher prices to acquire gas, often from new sources other than Russia, cover about 90% of the additional costs they incur.

Gas is the most common kind of heating in Germany, used in just under half of all homes.

Due to the conflict in Ukraine, Germany's dependence on Russian gas for both industrial and domestic use has gained notoriety this year.

The government wants to exempt sales tax.

Christian Lindner, the finance minister, has already stated that he hopes to lessen the shock by asking for the ability to waive sales tax on the new gas fee in Brussels. The EU would need to provide the go-ahead for this.

That will change things for certain folks, said Lindner.

Kerstin Andreae, the executive director of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries, contended that this was insufficient. She advised trying to obtain the 7% reduced sales tax rate for all gas purchases to public broadcaster ARD, claiming that the relief for customers was "important."

According to Robert Habeck, economy minister, the annual cost of the fee will amount to "several hundred euros per household."
The hike should result in an extra €480 per year, excluding sales tax, for a household of four.

Fairness and inflation impact are in doubt

On Monday, the business-focused publication Handelsblatt published a study from a research centre with connections to the German labour movement. The Institute for Macroeconomics and Cyclical Analysis claims that the gas tax may ultimately cause inflation rates to increase by up to 2%, approaching 10%.

Jörg Krämer, chief economist at Commerzbank, said that this would likely lead to higher inflation.

"This could cause the inflation rate to exceed 9% in October and November when combined with the expiration of the 9-euro [public transportation] ticket and the discount at gas stations. It significantly lowers customers' purchasing power, "Krämer provided information to Reuters.

With the most current numbers showing a tiny decline to 7.5% year-over-year in July, Germany, like many western economies, is experiencing its first period of strong inflation in decades.

In a newspaper interview on Monday, Dietmar Bartsch, the head of Germany's socialist Left Party, blasted against the proposal. Bartsch suggested that the government should pay for any additional expenses out of the "rapidly expanding sales tax receipts," calling the levy a "impoverishment programme for many individuals." He also demanded a proposal that would, in his opinion, more fairly cover the rising expenses.

Bartsch told the RND network of publications, "It is irresponsible of the government that no attempt is made to check what financial circumstances the consumers are in, instead of accepting this blanket fee for everyone."

Germany imposes a winter gas tax despite concerns about its effects

The water level in the Rhine River, a key shipping route in Germany and Europe, has fallen to a record low due to the ongoing drought, causing huge disruption to the shipping industry with some vessels unable to sail.

A lack of rain combined with an unrelenting heatwave has led to "exceptionally low" water in some areas of Germany’s most important inland waterway.

Officials have warned that the crisis would further compound in the upcoming days with the water level in the Kaub, a common reference point in the Rhine, predicted to drop as low as 35 centimetres on August 15, according to estimates by the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration on Friday.

Most barges require water levels above 40 cm to travel.

On Friday, container logistics service company Contargo said that it would discontinue its barge operations on the Middle and upper Rhine river, transporting what goods it could overground to its terminals on the Lower Rhine, reports Reuters news agency.

"Due to the difficult situation we regretfully have to point out that we can no longer guarantee to meet all deadlines," it said in a statement.

The Deutsche Bank economists said the situation is reminiscent of 2018 when a similar problem with the river led to a "standstill of freight shipping" and reduced German economic growth by an estimated 0.2 per cent.

The experts now estimate that Rhine disruption this year could plunge the GDP level by half a percentage point.

Credit rating agency Moody's said that the Rhine situation will increase costs for chemicals companies, especially those with production facilities on the upper Rhine, and could lead to production cuts.
