The barter system used to be the preferred mode of transaction in the ancient times but with the usage of coins and currency, it became almost extinct around the world. However, the cooking oil crisis around Europe due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in a Munich bar coming up with a unique proposition. The bar called Giesinger Brewery in south Munich is allowing customers to exchange sunflower oil for beer so that it can be used to cook schnitzels.

The offer allows the customers to pay for one litre of beer with a similar quantity of sunflower oil.

"The whole thing came up because we simply ran out of oil in the kitchen and that's why we have to be inventive," the pub manager, Erik Hoffmann, told Reuters TV.

With the Ukraine-Russia crisis not showing signs of ending, the entire world is suffering from a severe fuel crisis. The supply chain has suffered considerably and with both countries contributing almost 80 per cent of all sunflower oil exports, the situation has gotten worse with time.

The owners of the bar said that till now, around 400 litres of oil was given in exchange of beer.

A wristwatch that is rumoured to have belonged to Adolf Hitler is being sold by Alexander Historical Auctions, a company that specialises in historically significant items, with a pre-sale estimate of $2 to $4 million. According to Watchpro, Adolf Hitler most certainly received the gold Andreas Huber reversible wristwatch on April 20, 1933, his 44th birthday.

According to The Dailymail, it contains three dates: Hitler's birthday, the day he was named Germany's chancellor, and the day the Nazi party won the 1933 election. Hitler's Nazi party, which he led, is thought to have handed him the watch in 1933 when he was chosen as Germany's chancellor.

On Friday, May 4, 1945, when his battalion became the first Allied force to reach Hitler's retreat in Berchtesgaden in the highlands of Bavaria, a French soldier found it and took the watch as "spoils of war." According to the auctioneer, watchmakers and military historians have studied the watch's background and come to the consensus that Adolf Hitler actually owned it and that it is legitimate.

However, Jaeger-LeCoultre has stated in a statement that it does not recognise the legitimacy of the watch, according to Watchpro. “Any inference that this is an authentic Jaeger-LeCoultre watch would be a falsehood and the company would take action accordingly. The company is committed to the protection of its intellectual property and is prepared to take all necessary legal action to prevent the sale of frauds and counterfeits,” the company states.

A German ex-soldier has been sentenced five and a half years prison for posing as a Syrian refugee while planning a far-right attack on senior politicians.

Presiding judge Christoph Koller said, "The accused (Franco Albrecht) is guilty of planning a serious act of violence endangering the state."

Described by the interior minister as the biggest threat facing the country, the long-delayed trial shone a spotlight on neo-Nazi sympathies within the German military.

Highlighting the effectiveness of the security services in standing up to right-wing extremism, Koller said Albrecht harboured "right-wing extremist and racist-nationalist views that hardened over several years."

Since May 2021, Albrecht had been in the dock at the regional superior court in the western city of Frankfurt and wanted to target leading public figures.

In what he believed would lead to the "replacement of the German nation", Albrecht's cited cabinet ministers, MPs, and a prominent Jewish human rights activist among his potential targets

In Germany's post-war history, this is the first case in which a member of the armed forces was accused of planning a terrorist attack.

After he was charged and is expected to discharge should the conviction be upheld, the German military suspended Albrecht.

In a bid to expose what he called the deep flaws in the system, Albrecht darkened his skin with makeup to pose as a penniless refugee and hoodwinked immigration officials for 15 months.

Amid fears of gas shortages with Russia curbing capacity, Germany's two houses of Parliament have taken the "painful but necessary" decision to reactivate the country's coal-fired power plants in order to support electricity generation reports the Guardian. This is a major setback to Germany's plans to phase out carbon-intensive coal by 2030. Environmental campaigners argue that this move to use the highly polluting form of energy is a compromise too far, given that the country already rusks missing even the most basic climate targets it had set. Some argue that with Berlin hugely dependent on gas supplies from Russia what can the nation do, but restart the "mothballed" coal power plants.

Pride month: Berlin mosque flies rainbow flag to support LGBT communities

Germany on Friday signed an agreement for return of hundreads of Benin bronzes back to what is now Nigeria. This is a biggest effort yet by a European country to return the looted artworks during colonial times.

The agreement was signed in Berlin by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Culture Minister Claudia Roth with their Nigeria counterparts. Germany announced last year that ut would begin returning the bronzes.

The first two artworks -- the head of a king and a plaque depicting three warriors -- were on Friday handed over to representatives from Nigeria.

"Today we have reason to celebrate, because we have reached a historic agreement -- the Benin bronzes are returning home," Baerbock said.

"These pieces are not only magnificent artefacts -- they are some of Africa's greatest treasures. But they are also telling a story of colonial violence," she said.

Thousands of Benin bronzes, metal plaques and sculptures that once decorated the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin are now scattered around European museums after being looted by the British at the end of the 19th century.

Around 1100 of these artefacts are in about 20 German museums.

The biggest collection is held by the Ethnological Museum in Berlin, which has 440 -- considered the most important collection outside London's British Museum.

Negotiations are still ongoing as to which of the bronzes held by the Ethnological Museum will be returned to Nigeria, and which will remain in Berlin on loan.

Nigeria has been negotiating the return of Benin bronzes from several European countries and plans to build a museum in Benin City in southern Edo state, where it hopes to house them.

Germany is mulling over the consequences of soon becoming the world’s largest potential market for legally sold cannabis, as the country’s left-liberal government presses ahead with plans to allow the controlled distribution of the drug among adults, as reported by The Guardian.

The German government is moving forward with plans for legislation to legalize cannabis consumption. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said on Thursday that a draft law is scheduled to be ready by the end of the year.

The upcoming legislation is "a long-awaited step for many," Lauterbach said, adding that the government will apply a "safety first" principle to its efforts toward legalizing marijuana use. "The current, primarily repressive way of dealing with cannabis has failed," Lauterbach added.

Europe’s largest economy joining Canada and California in legalising cannabis for recreational use could create momentum to change the UN convention that restricts the cultivation of the plant and also puts pressure on neighbouring European states to follow Germany’s lead.

As reported by The Guardian, Justus Haucap, the director of the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics said, “There will be a domino effect, for sure. European countries that have a much bigger problem with illegal cannabis use, like France, are watching very closely what Germany is doing at the moment.”

The hemp industry is lobbying the German government to tax cannabis products at no more than €10 a gramme of bud, with a lower rate for plants with lower tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. A higher rate of taxation would give an advantage to illicit dealers, they argue, as would a wholesale ban on advertising state-offered weed.

An 8-year-old boy who was missing for a week was found stuck in a sewer drain. The drain is located just 65 feet away from his parents' house. The boy was rescued and is currently undergoing medical treatment.

The incident took place in Donnerschwee, a district in the city of Oldenburg in Germany.

The boy was missing for eight days.

"Thanks to a tip from the public, we were able to find the boy in a sewer system today. The most important thing is that he is alive and was immediately taken to a hospital where he is in good hands. We can all breathe a sigh of relief," said Police Chief Johann Kuehme. He was quoted by Newsweek.

A countrywide police search was launched for the boy when he went missing.

"Not only were many police officers from a wide variety of police departments across the country involved in the search efforts over the past few days, but many police officers also volunteered in their free time to support the search for Joe," said the police statement.

As the search was going on, a passerby alerted the authorities about a whimpering noise coming from a sewer drain near the boy's house. Fire department arrived at the scene. Firemen climbed down a manhole leading to the sewer and pulled the boy out.

After Russia’s throttling of deliveries to Europe, a senior energy official has warned that German consumers could face a tripling of gas prices in the coming months.

Citing technical reasons that Berlin dismisses as a pretext, Moscow reduced the flow of gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline by 40 per cent last week.

The head of the Federal Network Agency, German energy official Klaus Müller, has said that Russia's decision prompted a sixfold rise in market prices.

Asking German citizens to brace themselves for dramatically rising costs, Müller told the public broadcaster ARD that “a doubling or tripling is possible.”

It comes after Economy Minister Robert Habeck told Der Spiegel magazine that Germany is heading for a gas shortage if Russian gas supplies remain as low as they are now.

By creating "the best breeding ground for populism, which is intended to undermine our liberal democracy from within," Russian President Vladimir Putin's aim is to divide the country, according to Habeck.

Germany, which has triggered Phase 2 of three of its emergency gas plan, will prioritise private households over energy firms if it enters the third phase of the plan, according to Müller.

Following Russian invasion of Ukraine, the bloc's dependence on Russian gas supplies has been exposed. Sparking a frantic search for alternative energy sources, with EU members considering various scenarios in order to prevent "terrible and drastic" consequences for the gas industry.
