In a major setback for chancellor Olaf Scholz, his party is projected to lose provincial elections in northern state of Schleswig-Holstein just five months after he was elected to power. According to projections, Germany's center-right Christian Democrats Union or the CDU is later to win the elections with exit polls predicting it could secure 41 to 42 percent of the votes.

Germany Elections: Olaf Scholz's SPD loses Northern German state vote

In a boost to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's party, the Christian Democrats (CDU) have taken big lead in regional election in north German state of Schelswig Holstein on Sunday. Merkel's party was ousted in federal elections last year.

One survey published by ZDF Politbarometer on Thursday put support for the CDU at 38% in Schleswig-Holstein, widening the gap with the Social Democrats (SPD) and the environmentalist Greens, which both stood at 18%.

Analysts say that CDU's strong lead in Schleswig-Holstein is due to popularity of state premier Daniel Guenther

Another term for 48-year-old Guenther, who polls show is the most popular state premier in Germany, could strengthen the role of moderates within the CDU, in a counterpoint to their more right-wing leader Friedrich Merz, CDU sources told Reuters.

After casting his vote in a polling station in Eckernfoerde, a relaxed-looking Guenther told TV reporters he hoped the sunny weather on voting day would bring a high turnout.

More significant will be elections next week in Germany's most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), where the SPD and CDU are running neck and neck.

A loss by the conservatives in NRW, after losing in March in the tiny western state of Saarland, would be a significant blow to the party.

Merkel's party on track to win regional elections in North Germany

A 39-year-old woman from West Germany was jailed for poking holes in her partner’s condom in order to get pregnant.

According to media reports, a regional court in Bielefeld city charged the woman with sexual assault after finding her guilty of "stealthing" with her 42-year-old "friend with benefits" partner.

Stealthing is the practice of removing a condom midway through intercourse and then concealing it from the partner.

Usually, men are found to be convicted for this offence, but this is the first time that a woman was penalised.

The two reportedly met online at the beginning of 2021 and began a casual, sexual relationship.

The woman later developed stronger feelings for her partner, who did not reciprocate and wanted to keep it casual, reported local newspaper Neue Westfälische.

The woman, who remains unidentified, then came up with a plan of getting pregnant and secretly poked holes in the package of condoms that her partner kept in his nightstand.

But her efforts were reportedly unsuccessful.

Despite not getting pregnant, the woman admitted to her partner that she had sabotaged his condoms and lied about being pregnant.

The man then reportedly pressed charges against the woman.

According to DW, prosecutors and the court were initially unsure which specific charges to levy against the 39-year-old despite agreeing that a crime had been committed.

"We have written legal history here today," Judge Astrid Salewski reportedly told the court.

After first probing whether the crime constituted rape, the judge decided a charge of sexual assault was fitting after reading about the crime of "stealthing" while reviewing case law.

"This provision also applies in the reverse case. The condoms were rendered unusable without the man's knowledge or his consent," Salewski said in her decision.

Gravitas: German companies to buy Russian gas in roubles

Germany's energy firm Uniper on Friday (April 29) said it is ready to meet Russia's payment demand in roubles on gas.

Although this payment will not be direct as it will convert euros into roubles, critics believe that it will undermine the sanctions imposed by the European Union on Russia for invading Ukraine.

A spokesman for Uniper told BBC, "We consider a payment conversion compliant with sanctions law and the Russian decree to be possible."

Minister of State at Germany's Federal Foreign Office Dr Tobias Lindner has said that "it is in India's interest" to stop the war in Ukraine.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Berlin on May 2 for talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, with the two sides co-chairing the sixth edition of the India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC).

This will be the first such government-to-government consultations of the new German government, which assumed office in December 2021.

Speaking to WION’s Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal in Delhi, Lindner said, "I have come to Delhi to understand the reasons and motivations and the Indian position in that conflict. I believe that it is also in Indian interest that this war stops."

Asked about India's participation in the G7 as the guest, he said there could be an announcement in Berlin.

The summit is due to take place from June 26 to June 28 June at Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps. Germany is the chair of the grouping for this year and holds the meeting amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

India has been consecutively invited to the G7 summit since 2019. PM Modi first participated at the G7 summit in France's Biarritz Summit in 2019.

WION: What will be the key focus of PM Modi's visit?

Tobias Lindner: The strategic partnership with Germany is key for India, especially in the region, and we will have various issues in the governmental consultations like the economy, technology, education, and security situation in the region. We believe the strategic partnership means a holistic approach in all fields of policy.

WION: Will Ukraine be discussed and how do you see India's position on Ukraine?

Tobias Lindner: For sure you cannot meet these days without talking about Ukraine because it has an impact on international rules-based order, and we believe it is in the interest of all countries on the planet to uphold territorial integrity and sovereignty. For sure will have exchanges with Indian colleagues on that and we more pull than push India on that term. Also trying to talk about possible implications of that war in other regions of the world.

WION: How do you see India's position on the Ukraine war?

Tobias Lindner: It is no secret that the German government welcomes every support for the resolutions in the United Nations. But I have come to Delhi to understand the reasons and motivations and the Indian position in that conflict. I believe that it is also in India's interest that this war stops, that we have the same goals, protecting the rules-based international order. Having an immediate stop to the war in Ukraine and in that field, we are searching for cooperation with India.

WION: And will India be invited to the G7 summit?

Tobias Lindner: I cannot make any comments on that. It is the issue of the German chancellery, but I believe during the consultations in Berlin there will be an announcement.

WION: What has been your govt's stance on Ukraine, which is at the heart of the crisis, but has also been criticized.

Tobias Lindner: This war on Ukraine is a blatant breach of international rules-based order. Russia is responsible for that. So, it is Russia's responsibility to immediately stop this war and violence in Ukraine. We are doing a lot starting from humanitarian aid, from helping the people in Ukraine, to helping refugees outside the country and also giving military assistance in terms of heavy weapons to Ukraine.

The United States and a number of western countries have been sending considerable number of arms and ammunitions to the Ukraine in order to help them combat the Russian invasion.

Germany will become the latest European power to send ‘heavy weapons and complex systems’ to Ukraine after the country’s lawmakers voted in favour of aiding Ukraine with ammunition.

The petition, which went on vote in the lower house of the German parliament – The Bundestag, was passed with 586 votes in favour, 100 against and seven individuals abstaining from the vote.

In addition to the supply of arms to Ukraine, it was also decided that Germany will be sending more troops in order to boost the NATO forces in eastern Europe. The petition also specified that armoured vehicles and anti-aircraft systems will comprise most of the arms sent to Ukraine.

While there was an overwhelming support in favour of sending the weapons to bolster the war effort in Ukraine, some were worried that the move make look like a declaration of war. The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) were completely opposed to the move and according to Deutsche Welle, their senior lawmaker said that it will end up prolonging the war in Ukraine.

The socialist Left Party of Germany also took a similar tone in the issue and warned the country’s chancellor Olaf Scholz that this move can increase the changes of a potential nuclear war.

Germany votes overwhelmingly in favour of supplying heavy weapons to Ukraine amid ongoing conflict

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis believes that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a dangerous precedent in modern history. In an exclusive interview with Executive Editor of WION Palki Sharma, he explained that Baltic nations are worried about a possible Russian aggression.

“If a big country and a nuclear power is allowed to cross another country’s border and stay there, it changes the meaning of the security architecture that was probably built after the second World War. That means that if you are allowed to do it once, what stops you from doing it more times?”

“There are countries in the vicinity who are at risk. One is Moldova and there was some military movement in Transnistria which is actually between Ukraine and Moldova. But the question is whether NATO borders will be enough to stop Russia and there are people in a number of Baltic states who are thinking that maybe it will not be enough,” Landsbergis said in the interview.

Ukraine has received a lot of help from NATO nations since the Russian invasion started in February 24 and the Lithuanian FM praised the ‘unprecedented’ response from the world.

“Before the 24th of February, you would have heard more about the disagreements and the difficult road towards a consensus when it comes to the European Union. Now, we have not only managed to secure the 27 around the European table but also to expand it. The global response to the Russian aggression was unprecedented and this is what caught Mr Putin by surprise,” he explained.

German economy minister Robert Habeck said on Tuesday that they are looking for ways to replace Russian oil and the Lithuanian FM believes that this is a great step towards finding a consensus.

“The sanctions are extremely important if we need to stop the war from going on for one or two years. But what more can be done is to ban the imports of oil and gas. This is what Lithuania has been asking for and certain announcements from German government gives us hope.”

That means that if you are allowed to do it once, what stops you from doing it more times?” “There are countries in the vicinity who are at risk. One is Moldova and there was some military movement in Transnistria which is actually between Ukraine and Moldova. But the question is whether NATO borders will be enough to stop Russia and there are people in a number of Baltic states who are thinking that maybe it will not be enough,” Landsbergis said in the interview. German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht said on Tuesday that the country will authorise delivery of tanks to Ukraine. This is being seen as a clear switch in Germany's cautious policy in Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Lambrecht told an international meeting of defence ministers at US Ramstein airbase, said AFP.

Forty countries are holding emergency talks at the airbase in southwestern Germany on bolstering the defence capabilities of Ukraine.

The meeting, held at the invitation of the United States, is "focused on doing things to generate additional capability and capacity for the Ukrainian forces", according to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

France is providing Caesar cannons with 40 kilometre range. Britain has provided Starstreak anti-air missiles and tanks.

The Gepard tanks will not come from the German army but from stocks held by the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) arms group, government sources told AFP.

They were taken out of service 10 years ago and need to be technically upgraded, the sources said.

This will lead to a rise in energy prices, increase inflation and trigger one of the deepest recessions in decades.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be on a visit to three European countries, including Germany, Denmark, and France in the first week of May.

The visit, which is the first foreign visit of PM Modi this year, will see two key bilateral engagements in Germany and France. But a substantial portion of visit will be in Denmark's capital Copenhagen where PM will take part in the second India Nordic summit.

Leaders of all five Nordic countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland will participate in the summit that will focus on clean technology, climate change, renewables etc. The first India-Nordic summit took place in Sweden's capital Stockholm in April of 2018, a format that brings together India along with all the countries in the Nordic or Northern European countries.

A similar format meeting has taken with the US as well in May 2016 when the then US President Obama held meeting with the five Nordic countries.

An upswing in India-Denmark ties has been seen as well. Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen was on a state visit to India in October 2021. That was the first visit by a Head of Government to India following the COVID-19 pandemic. Interestingly, India and Denmark have a unique Green Strategic Partnership which was established during the Virtual Summit held in September 2020. The partnership focuses on green technologies and sustainable solutions in sectors like renewable energy.
