Subsequently,&nbsp;the crowd gathered at&nbsp;Place de la Republique was dispersed by the police and seen marching towards&nbsp;Boulevard Magenta instead, where several hundred people were reportedly marching peacefully.&nbsp;

Traore’s older sister, Assa Traore, after Friday’s court decision took to Twitter and confirmed the change of location and said, “The government has decided to add fuel to the fire (and) not to respect the death of my little brother.”&nbsp;

The head of the Paris police, Laurent Nuñez, said that the march would “likely to attract radical elements with a view to committing acts of violence; the reasons which led the prefect of Val-d’Oise to ban the gathering.”&nbsp;

The circumstances under which the 24-year-old Black Frenchman died in police custody were similar to the killing of George Floyd in the United States. The march was to take place in memory of Traore who his family allege was pinned to the ground by officers and died of asphyxiation.&nbsp;

A row has now broken out over the collection, with the protesters arguing that it now 'pays to kill innocent teenagers'.&nbsp;

Jean Messiha, a former adviser to the French far-right politician Marine Le Pen, set up the campaign on GoFundMe&nbsp;which has raised nearly $1.05 million (963,000 euros) so far.&nbsp;

"Support for the family of the Nanterre policeman, Florian.M who has done his job and is now paying a high price. Support him MASSIVELY and support our law enforcement!" reads the description of the donation page which had an initial target of $55,000.&nbsp;

Notably, a similar collection to help the family of&nbsp;Nahel Merzouk, the teenager shot by the French officer had only managed to collect $218,000&nbsp;-&nbsp;nearly five times less than&nbsp;Florian's.&nbsp;

<h2>Politicians criticise the fund collection&nbsp;</h2>

Olivier Faure, head of the Socialist Party, called on GoFundMe to close the fundraiser, accusing the platform of “hosting a pot of shame”.

“You maintain an already gaping fracture by participating in support of a police officer indicted for intentional homicide. Close!” said Faure.&nbsp;

Manon Aubry, a France Unbowed MEP, echoed a similar demand.&nbsp;

“More than a million euros collected on the initiative of a far-right polemicist [Messiha] in support of a police officer who kills a teenager. The message? It pays to kill a young Arab,” Aubry tweeted.

“Jean Messiha blows on the embers. It is a generator of riots. The pot of several hundred thousand euros for the police officer indicted in the homicide of young Nahel is indecent and scandalous," wrote&nbsp;Eric Bothorel&nbsp;of the ruling Renaissance party.&nbsp;

<h2>GoFundMe remains adamant&nbsp;</h2>

Despite the public backlash, GoFundMe said it will not take the campaign down as it did not violate any French law. It argued that the&nbsp;money would not go to fund the police officer’s legal fees or defence.

“The money will be directly given to the family, which has been added as a beneficiary,” a&nbsp;spokesperson for GoFundMe told the French magazine Capital.

Notably, French law prohibits the “opening of or public announcement of subscriptions whose purpose is to compensate for fines, costs and damages awarded by judicial sentences in criminal and correctional matters”. If the rule is broken, it entails a six-month prison sentence or a $50,000 fine.&nbsp;

Around 45,000 police personnel are currently patrolling the streets of France with reinforcements consisting of specialised elite units, and armoured vehicles,&nbsp;in an attempt to restore calm.&nbsp;

Residents got some relief on Tuesday night when the drivers of the trucks for the second night refrained from blasting their air horns, a form of protest that was enjoined by a court order on Monday afternoon.

At the other end of Ontario province, in Windsor, a road blockade continued to prevent trucks from entering Canada across the Ambassador Bridge between the city and Detroit. The bridge is critical to the automobile industry.

On Wednesday, truck protesters were also still interfering with another border crossing between the western province of Alberta and Montana.

The protesters in Ottawa converged on the city nearly two weeks ago, but a strategy for retaking the city from the truckers continues to elude law enforcement. It has also emboldened critics of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his response to the pandemic.

Ottawa’s police chief, who declared a state of emergency on Sunday, has vowed to end the protests but has said the city needs 1,800 more officers to do that. Trudeau said on Twitter that hundreds of Royal Canadian Mounted Police had been mobilized to support Ottawa police officers.

After strong opposition from France, a European campaign promoting the 'joy and freedom' of wearing the hijab was cancelled.

The campaign by the Council of Europe was slammed by President Macron's government as highly inappropriate, left-wing lawmakers criticised it, and right-wing presidential hopefuls blasted it as Islamist propaganda.&nbsp;

The council's anti-discrimination division, which launched the diversity campaign, has taken its content down from social media, saying it will "consider a better presentation of this initiative."

It will clamp down on home-schooling of children that are over three&nbsp;years of age, punish doctors who provide virginity certificates to Muslim women, make hate speech a punishable offence with 3 years of imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros,&nbsp;refuse residence permits for immigrants practising polygamy, increase penalties or simply shut down places of worship found peddling hate, prohibit religious symbols like the hijab in all public and&nbsp;private-sector jobs and control the foreign funding of Islamic institutes and associations in France.

France has suffered due to Islamic extremism more than any European country and it needs to take tough measures to rein in radicals.

At the same time,&nbsp;it must ensure that progressive french Muslims do not become collateral damage.

In an election year, President Macron must get the balance right. His bill and its implementation may well provide a playbook to the west on dealing with radicalism.

But it has infuriated trade unions who argue the reform will erode hard-earned benefits and leave pensioners worse off.

The bill, which will be sent to France's pension administrators on Friday for their consideration, says the retirement age for a full pension will be progressively raised to reach 64 "for the 1965 generation who will retire from 2027".

Under the proposal, the legal retirement age will remain 62 but workers who leave at that point will not receive their maximum pension.

"We could not have a text that is silent on the age (for a balanced pension budget)," Laurent Pietraszewski, secretary of state for pensions, told Reuters. "It is at the heart of the reform."

Deadlock

If Macron emerges the winner from the weeks-long showdown, he will have gone further than any other French postwar leader in shaking up the pension system.

However, negotiations continue on Friday between the unions and Prime Minister Edouard Philippe. It is still possible the plans will be watered down as the government seeks to break the deadlock.

Hard-left unions are calling for the government to abandon the bill. The reform-minded CFDT union, France's largest, is open to the planned universal "points" system, but says an increase of the retirement age "crosses a red line".

Unions brought hundreds of thousands of demonstrators onto the streets in cities across France on Thursday but the turnout was down on past protests and their momentum is faltering. Participation in strikes now in their 37th day has waned and public support fallen, according to opinion polls.

Philippe has agreed to seek a way of balancing the pension budget other than by raising the retirement age while the bill is being scrutinised in parliament. His government has promised to include any alternative solutions as amendments.

But that has so far been rejected by the unions.

"A compromise will only be found once the sword of Damocles that is the retirement age is no longer hanging over us," Laurent Escure, leader of the UNSA union said after his meeting with Philippe.

Parliament is due to debate the bill from mid-February.
