Players from all 20 Premier League clubs will continue to take the knee ahead of games this season to highlight their opposition to racism, the league said on Tuesday.

The Premier League said it "wholeheartedly supported" the decision, adding that players and match officials will continue to wear a No Room For Racism badge on their shirts.

Players and staff have been taking a knee prior to kickoff since the league returned to action in June last year to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

"We feel now, more than ever, it is important for us to continue to take the knee as a symbol of our unity against all forms of racism," the players said in a statement.

"We remain resolutely committed to our singular objective of eradicating racial prejudice wherever it exists, to bring about a global society of inclusion, respect, and equal opportunities for all."

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said they would continue to work with players, clubs, and football partners to bring about "tangible change" and remove inequality from the sport.

Earlier on Tuesday, the English Football League (EFL) said it would back any players and staff who want to take the knee during the 2021-22 season.

"For over a year, players have made the personal choice to perform this simple act of protest... helping shine a light on these issues in society and continue a conversation that has been heard across the world," the EFL said in a statement.

The EFL will also be promoting a new "Together Against Discrimination" matchday message that will see clubs across its three divisions adopting a unified position reiterating that racism, discrimination and abuse are not welcome in football.

The Championship, League One and League Two all kick off this weekend, while the Premier League begins on Aug. 13 with promoted Brentford hosting Arsenal.

The Argentine's contract expired at the end of June and the forward is currently a free agent.

"We're doing everything possible, and it's progressing well," Laporta told a news conference on Monday.

"It's going in the line we all believed it would, within the scope we've got. We're still in discussions.

England defender Tyrone Mings has revealed he struggled with mental health problems at the start of Euro 2020 after critics questioned whether he deserved a place in the team.

Mings started England's first two Euro group games against Croatia and Scotland while Harry Maguire recovered from an ankle injury.

"When 90-95 percent of your country are having doubts over you, it's very difficult to stop this intruding on your own thoughts.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford will soon undergo surgery on a shoulder injury, the Premier League club said on Friday.

Rashford had struggled with a shoulder problem during the latter part of the 2020-21 season and played only a limited role with England during their run to the Euro 2020 final, where they lost to champions Italy.

"Following consultation between Marcus, the manager, club medical staff and specialists, Marcus will undergo surgery imminently to resolve his shoulder injury," United said in a statement.

"He will now focus on his rehabilitation in order to return as soon as possible."

Football clubs should interact with fans to educate them about racism, French player Patrice Evra said, after Black players in the England team were exposed to online racism after their Euro 2020 final loss.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka were racially targeted after they missed penalty-kicks in England's 3-2 shootout loss to Italy after the game finished 1-1 after additional time.

The racism drew wide judgment from England's captain, manager, and government officials, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson urging web-based media organizations to do more to handle online racism that 'emerged from the dark spaces'.

Patrice Evra told Sky Sports that schooling was critical to deal with this long-lasting problem.

"If we don't do something racism will always be there because it's been there for so many years. You know we need to change and that's why education is really important," Evra said.

Gold medal favourites the United States began their bid for a fifth women's Olympic football title with an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Sweden, while Team GB kicked off their campaign at the Tokyo Games by beating Chile on Wednesday and the Netherlands put 10 past fellow debutants Zambia.

The US have won four of six Olympic titles since women's football was introduced to the programme in 1996 but suffered a heavy defeat by the same team that knocked them out on penalties in the quarter-finals in Rio.

Stina Blackstenius scored twice before substitute Lina Hurtig added a third for 2016 silver medallists Sweden at a game played in an empty Tokyo Stadium due to strict Covid-19 restrictions.

The loss ended a 44-match unbeaten run for the Americans dating back to the start of 2019. It was also only the second time they had lost a game in 90 minutes at the Olympics.

"They're (Sweden) one of the best teams in the world," said US forward Megan Rapinoe. "There's really no time to dwell or think about if Sweden is living in our heads or not. We've got another game in three days."

The Dutch made history in Miyagi as Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedama scored four times in a remarkable 10-3 thumping of Zambia.

Lieke Martens netted twice, while Shanice van de Sanden, Jill Roord, Lineth Beerensteyn and Victoria Pevlova also got on the scoresheet.

It was the highest-scoring game in women's Olympic history and the most scored by one team in a match, but Zambia avoided a record margin of defeat as Barbra Banda scored twice late on to secure a hat-trick.

The largest win remains Germany's 8-0 thrashing of China in 2004.

In Sapporo, Great Britain won their Group E opener 2-0, with Manchester City striker Ellen White scoring twice and having a goal disallowed by VAR for offside.

Hege Riise's side are bidding to become the first British team to win an Olympic football medal.

"When you get into a competition, it's really important you win that first game," said Team GB captain Steph Houghton.

"There's still a lot of stuff to improve on but three points on the board, we're really pleased."

Brazil star Marta bagged two goals in a 5-0 rout of China in Group F, meaning she has now scored in five straight Olympics.

Debinha scored in between Marta's brace before a late Andressa penalty and Beatriz strike completed a comprehensive victory in Rifu.

In the other Group E game, hosts Japan rescued a 1-1 draw with Canada as Aston Villa's Mana Iwabuchi scored an 84th-minute equaliser.

Christine Sinclair had put the Canadians in front, marking her 300th appearance for her country with a record-extending 187th international goal.

Australia sit second in the early Group D table behind Sweden after Sam Kerr found the net in a 2-1 victory over New Zealand.

"There's still a lot of stuff to improve on but three points on the board, we're really pleased." Brazil star Marta bagged two goals in a 5-0 rout of China in Group F, meaning she has now scored in five straight Olympics.

USA women thumped while Dutch score 10 in Olympic football

A pair of goals from Swedish forward Stina Blackstenius spelled catastrophe for the United States on Wednesday, as they suffered a shock 3-0 defeat in their Tokyo 2020 debut.

Fifth-ranked Sweden put the pressure on almost immediately with three shots in the first eight minutes, as the four-time Olympic gold medalists showed little sign of the stellar unbeaten run they have enjoyed since 2019.

Forward Stina Blackstenius converted in the 25th minute, rocketing a header past U.S. keeper Alyssa Naeher with an assist from Sofia Jakobsson. The goalie had five saves in the first half as a dominant Swedish forward line crashed through the Americans' defenses.

Midfielder Rose Lavelle nearly equalized with a header in minute 45 off a corner kick from Christen Press but hit the post.

The addition of veteran midfielder Julie Ertz did little to revive the U.S. in the second half, as Blackstenius again scored in the 54th minute.

The match was personal for Team USA: The Swedes knocked the four-time World Cup winners out of the tournament on penalties in the quarter-finals in 2016.

But their much-hoped-for revenge in front of 48,000 empty seats inside the Tokyo Stadium was not to be, as forward Christen Press missed a wide-open net at close range midway through the second half.

Swedish midfielder Lina Hurtig then heaped on more pain with a clinical header to give her side a three-goal cushion a minute later, ending the United States' 44-game unbeaten streak.

"We (have) developed our game and our play," Blackstenius said after the match. "We have so much quality in every player. Every player is also very different from the other."

The Rio defeat marked the U.S. team's earliest exit in Olympic history, after previously reaching the final of every edition of the Games since 1996 when the women's event was introduced.

The two sides drew 1-1 in an April friendly, the only blemish to the United States' 2021 record of 11 wins in 12 matches and a prescient warning of the challenges the team would face in their 2020 Tokyo kickoff.

The defeat was the United States' first under head coach Vlatko Andonovski, who took over from Jill Ellis in 2019.

"We played a little bit tight and just hurt ourselves a lot," said 2012 gold medallist and veteran forward Megan Rapinoe. "They took their chances, got into better space, and inevitably scored more goals."

The pandemic-postponed Games kicked off earlier Wednesday with a victory for the Olympic hosts, as Japan's softball team walloped Australia 8-1 at the Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium.

The United States next face New Zealand in the group stage, while Sweden play Australia, both on Saturday.

QUARTER-FINALS UKRAINE 0-4 ENGLAND England stormed into the last four with their most impressive performance of the tournament as the rejuvenated Kane scored twice while Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson added one each at the Olympic stadium in Rome. Captain Kane slid in from close range to fire England into a fourth-minute lead and Maguire doubled the advantage in the 46th with a thumping header into the far corner as he got on the end of a Shaw free-kick. Kane made it 3-0 four minutes later with a simple header after another excellent delivery by Shaw and Henderson completed the rout in the 63rd with his first international goal when he headed home a Mason Mount corner. SEMI-FINALS ENGLAND 2-1 DENMARK Having conceded their first goal in the tournament as they returned to Wembley, England fought back to win in extra time after falling behind to a sublime Mikkel Damsgaard free kick in the 30th minute. The forward hit the top corner with a rasping shot which flew over the wall but England were level nine minutes later when Denmark captain Simon Kjaer could only turn a low Bukayo Saka cross into his own net ahead of the onrushing Sterling. Kane netted the winner in the 104th minute as he swept in a rebound after goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel parried the striker’s penalty straight into his path, with the spot kick awarded after Sterling went down under a challenge from Joakim Maehle.

Football: England's road to the Euro 2020 final

While England exulted at reaching a first major final since 1966, there was increasing outcry abroad over the penalty awarded for a foul on Raheem Sterling in extra time to give them a 2-1 win over Denmark in their Euro 2020 semi-final.

An array of media and football figures joined Danish fans in condemning the penalty as too cheap for such a big game, some saying England's haughty views on diving looked hypocritical in view of Sterling's tumble at the lightest of touches.

"They always say how bad it is when a foreign player tries to deceive the referee with a dive. In pure English football, this does not happen. Apart from, of course, in a European Championship semi-final," said Spanish newspaper Marca.

"It would be nice for English football to stop giving lectures to the rest of the continent about diving."

The speedy and swerving Sterling, who has been accused of diving before in England's Premier League, went over in the box after minimal contact from Denmark's Joakim Maehle.

Dutch referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot and upheld that after briefly consulting the Video Assistant Referee, though without reviewing the move on the pitchside monitor.

Harry Kane's penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel but the captain followed up to score and give England the win.

'FAR TOO CHEAP'

"This was a soft penalty for me ... far too cheap a penalty for a Euro semi-final," ex-referee Jonas Eriksson, who officiated at Euro 2012 and 2016, said on Swedish network SVT.

"I am mostly surprised and annoyed that the VAR doesn't tell the referee. This decides which team goes through."

Sterling himself said after the game it was a clear penalty with his leg clipped. But former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who is now the international governing body of FIFA's head of global football development, was among those doubting.

"In a moment like that, it's important the referee is absolutely convinced it was a penalty. It was not clear enough to say 'yes it is'. He should have at least had a look at the screen," he said on the Qatari network beIN Sports.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho went further, telling radio station Talksport "For me, it's never a penalty" even though he said the best team won and he was happy for England.

Denmark might also have felt aggrieved by the fact a second ball was on the pitch when Sterling entered the area, which according to regulations could have led to play being halted.

Adding insult to injury, a fan shone a laser pen on Schmeichel as he prepared to face Kane's penalty.

"They won with a penalty which was a blatant dive," fumed former Germany player and pundit Dietmar Hamann. "England always prides itself on being the home of fair play and no diving."

Elsewhere, France's L'Equipe newspaper said England had only breached the Danish defense with "a questionable, not least generous, penalty", while in Italy - England's opponents in Sunday's final - Gazzetta Dello Sport said, "it's a shame they get these little bits of help because they don't need it".

"It's diving home," tweeted Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri in a sarcastic reference to England's football anthem "It's coming home."

Euro 2020: England told to stop lecturing on diving after 'cheap' penalty

When England players woke on Thursday morning, back at their secluded countryside training base St George's Park, they will have no doubt felt the afterglow of the wild celebrations of their Euro 2020 semi-final win over Denmark at Wembley.

But while across the nation debris was being cleared from parties into the early hours, England will have faced their own more sober reality check.

For all the outpouring of joy, euphoric refrains of "Football's Coming Home", and hyperbole including one pundit's call for a national holiday, England have not actually won anything yet.

In fact, the only thing "coming home" at this stage is England going back to Wembley for another match on Sunday in the final against Italy.

"It's feet back on the ground this morning. Everyone enjoyed it last night but now we have to come up against one of the most experienced teams in world football in Italy, it will be more difficult than last night," said former England winger and now BBC radio analyst Chris Waddle.

Roberto Mancini's side are unbeaten in 33 matches and reached the final after a penalty shoot-out win over Spain.

This is only England's second appearance in a major final but will be Italy's tenth.

For the pundits, ex-players unable to reach a Euro or World Cup final in their career, and the long-suffering England fans, the delight is obvious at the ending of a 55-year wait.

But one of England manager Gareth Southgate's most-used mantras in this tournament has been for his team to "make their own history" and not feel past burdens.

The approach has worked so far as England have avoided the pitfalls of so many other campaigns, beating old rivals Germany in the last 16 and not losing their nerve even when behind to Denmark and then going into extra-time.

ITALY'S 'WARRIORS'

Amid the high of Wednesday's celebrations, Southgate again injected focus.

"Finals are to be won. We’ve got to regroup, prepare properly, and recover because tonight’s taken a lot, emotionally, physically. Italy had that as well. They have an extra day to recover," he said.

"Italy are a very good side, I’ve thought that for the past couple of years. They’ve shown the outstanding form, they’ve got defensive warriors at the back who have been through everything," he said.

But there is more to Southgate than the usual coach's cliche of "taking each game as it comes" and he is well aware of the emotional import of the tournament.

"We’ve had three memorable games on the bounce now. We’ve said we want to create memories for our nation," he said.

And while it may take a little while to sink in, the abiding memory of this tournament for England will be defined not by beating Germany, nor putting four goals past Ukraine or the victory over Denmark, but by the outcome of Sunday's final.

Italy knows all about that: they lost their last two appearances in the Euro finals in 2000 and 2012 but sandwiched in between was their 2006 World Cup triumph.

Every Italian fan can remember Marcello Lippi's lineups from their successful campaign in Germany, but fewer will recall the defeated players from the Euro final losses.

The 60,000 crowd on Sunday will be overwhelmingly English, just as it was when the team won their only major title, the 1966 World Cup. The names of that team have never been forgotten.

Football: Paris Saint-Germain sign Sergio Ramos on free transfer

With their Euro 2020 campaign looking over by halftime in the opening game after Christian Eriksen's collapse, Denmark somehow came blazing back to reach the semi-finals, only to finally run out of steam as they lost to England after extra time.

The closest most of the Danish players had been to such tragedy and drama was most likely the statue of Hamlet at the entrance of their hotel base in Helsingor, but Eriksen's cardiac arrest against Finland thrust them into the global spotlight.

The shocking scenes that unfolded on live television stunned the footballing world as medics battled to save the life of their talismanic midfielder while his distressed teammates looked on.

Captain Simon Kjaer showed great strength to help save Eriksen's life as keeper Kasper Schmeichel tried to pull his side together, while others wept before the dubious decision to restart the game against Finland was taken.

It resulted in a 1-0 loss that not even the Finns seemed to care much about, despite it being their first game at the finals of a major tournament.

In the aftermath of that trauma, Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand spoke of how the Danes needed to have the courage to allow themselves to experience their feelings, and he and his players displayed a range of raw emotions in the following days.

Some, like Schmeichel, seemed to recover quicker than others but Kjaer, the rock on which the current Denmark side is built, was not sure he wanted to play the next game against Belgium, a 2-1 loss that came as no surprise.

AMBITIOUS FOOTBALL

Denmark's campaign was in turmoil, but having shown glimpses of Hjulmand's expansive, ambitious football, the signs of a potential comeback were there once they managed to gradually put the shock of that opening game behind them.

Mikkel Damsgaard led the way, showing no fear whatsoever as he shouldered Eriksen's playmaking responsibilities and scored a brilliant opening goal against Russia in their final group game to ignite a cathartic night in Copenhagen.

Battered beyond belief, but knowing that Eriksen was alive, the Danes simply refused to throw in the towel as 25,000 red-and-white clad fans roared them on to a spectacular 4-1 win that saw them qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

They walloped Wales 4-0 in the last 16 as the headlines finally turned to their football, rather than Eriksen's fate.

A nervy 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in the quarters set up the semi-final clash with England. They even took the lead through another brilliant Damsgaard goal, but the cracks were beginning to show.

A Kjaer's own goal leveled the game and by the hour mark they began to wilt, the adrenalin fading and the emotional toll of the last few weeks making its presence felt as an extra-time penalty by Harry Kane ended their tournament.

Showing bravery and skill, there was no shame in that defeat as the Danes weathered the storm of Eriksen's collapse, winning new fans at home and abroad and auguring a bright and promising future, despite the drama they had to endure at Euro 2020.

Euro 2020: Heroic Danes show heart despite fall at final Euro hurdle

England defender Harry Maguire will be at the heart of Gareth Southgate's defense in Wednesday's Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark, but he did not know if he would be fit enough to even make the squad after an ankle injury in May.

Maguire suffered ligament damage in Manchester United's May 9 Premier League match with Aston Villa and missed the rest of the domestic season and his club's Europa League final loss to Villarreal.

He missed England's warm-up games and opening two matches in the Euros' group stage but returned in the final group fixture with the Czech Republic and has been alongside John Stones since then.

Asked if he feared he might have to watch the Euros on TV rather than be on the field, Maguire, who scored a header in Saturday's 4-0 win over Ukraine, said there was uncertainty.

"I think with any injury, you don't know how you are going to recover, you don't know the rehab if you are going to have a setback. Touchwood, I haven't had any setbacks in rehab and it has all gone smoothly, all gone to plan and a little bit quicker than we all thought," he told a news conference on Monday.

"Obviously to miss the Europa League final was disappointing and then I fully set my sights on making the Euros squad."

The Yorkshireman said he did not know when he was named in that squad when he would be ready to return to action but is pleased with the way he has coped.

"It's not like being thrown into a friendly match, it's the European Championship, so it's so demanding and the intensity of each game," he said.

"So where it has gone and where it has been, I think that is a great credit to the medical staff at Manchester United and England for the way they went about everything, the way they pushed me every day and obviously I am really proud of myself in terms of the way that I pushed myself as well."

Maguire was part of the England team which lost to Croatia in the semi-final of the World Cup in Russia three years ago and says the memory of that loss is in the players' minds.

"Losing the semi-final at the World Cup hurt a lot. So we need to make sure when it comes on Wednesday night we get a positive feeling rather than the one we got against Croatia."

"Obviously to miss the Europa League final was disappointing and then I fully set my sights on making the Euros squad." The Yorkshireman said he did not know when he was named in that squad when he would be ready to return to action but is pleased with the way he has coped. "It's not like being thrown into a friendly match, it's the European Championship, so it's so demanding and the intensity of each game," he said. "So where it has gone and where it has been, I think that is a great credit to the medical staff at Manchester United and England for the way they went about everything, the way they pushed me every day and obviously I am really proud of myself in terms of the way that I pushed myself as well." Maguire was part of the England team which lost to Croatia in the semi-final of the World Cup in Russia three years ago and says the memory of that loss is in the players' minds. "Losing the semi-final at the World Cup hurt a lot. So we need to make sure when it comes on Wednesday night we get a positive feeling rather than the one we got against Croatia."

Football: England's Harry Maguire grateful to be in Euros after injury

Spain coach Luis Enrique believes Tuesday's Euro 2020 semi-final against Italy could hinge on who dominates possession.

Spain broke a tournament record for possession in their opening game against Sweden but had little to show for it as the game finished 0-0.

However, he said his team, rather like this new-look Italy side that have captured neutrals' hearts, were most comfortable with the ball at their feet.

"That's one of the first questions to settle. We are leaders in ball possession but they can also make use of it and enjoy the ball, that'll be the first battle we need to conquer," Luis Enrique told a news conference on Monday.

"They can adapt to not having the ball, they've done that in the tournament in certain stages but they're more comfortable with the ball and stronger with it.

"Our objective is clear, we want the ball, we need it, if we have to do something different we will adapt but we prefer to have possession of the ball."

Italy has played a big role in Luis Enrique's career as he got his first major coaching job with AS Roma a decade ago before going on to take charge of Celta Vigo, Barcelona, and the Spanish national side.

He has vivid memories of facing Italy as a player too, in particular when Mauro Tassotti broke his nose in a 1994 World Cup quarter-final defeat with a flying elbow that went unpunished on the day, although led to the striker being served an eight-game ban.

The coach laughed when the infamous moment was raised but said he had moved on from it.

"It's been so many years, and my nose is all the better for it. I've spoken to Tassotti since and he's an honest, good guy. It's formed part of our history, although I'm sure both of us would have preferred that moment to go differently," he said.

"I have a great memory of my time in Italy and the people so it's not relevant. This a great semi-final game where Spain and Italy have the chance to reach the final and the rest is just history."

Forward Pablo Sarabia is Spain's only absentee while Italy are likely to bring in Emerson at left-back for Leonardo Spinazzola, who tore his Achilles tendon in the quarter-final win over Belgium.

There will be few Italian or Spanish supporters at the match at Wembley due to England's coronavirus restrictions on visitors. Luis Enrique conceded it would be "strange" to have so few fans from the two teams in the crowd but said he would not "waste energy on things I can't control".

Brazil forward Neymar said he hopes Argentina will be their opponents in the Copa America final and has no doubts that the hosts would come out on top against their fierce rivals.

Brazil beat Peru 1-0 in Monday's semi-final in Rio de Janeiro thanks to a 35th-minute goal from Lucas Paqueta to book their spot in Saturday’s decider at the Maracana stadium.

The second semi-final between Argentina and Colombia is on Tuesday.

“I want Argentina, I am cheering them on,” Neymar said with a smile. “I have friends there and in final Brazil will win.”

The last time the two sides met in a Copa America final was in 2007 when Brazil won 3-0 in Venezuela, and a title match between the arch-rivals would be a treat for the neutrals.

It would not only pit the tournament's only unbeaten teams against each other it would also be a showdown between two of the best No. 10s in the game, former Barcelona teammates Neymar and Lionel Messi.

Both players have had an exceptional tournament so far, with Neymar recording two goals and three assists, while Messi has four goals and four assists.

Brazil are reigning champions and have home advantage at a tournament that was supposed to be co-hosted by Argentina and Colombia.

Colombia was stripped of hosting rights due to a wave of civil unrest and Argentina pulled out at the last minute because of a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Neymar missed Brazil's Copa America triumph on home soil two years ago but inspired them to the 2013 Confederations Cup as well as Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Messi, meanwhile, has won everything with his club Barcelona but nothing with Argentina, who are aiming to win a first major title since the 1993 Copa America.
