Karim Benzema picked up where he left off last season by scoring twice to fire Real Madrid to a 4-1 win away to Alaves in their opening game of the LaLiga campaign.

Real had an uninspiring first half in Carlo Ancelotti`s first league game since taking charge of the club for a second time but Benzema settled their nerves by blasting the ball into the net in the 48th minute after being teed up by Eden Hazard.

Defender Nacho Fernandez added to Real`s lead eight minutes later, sliding in to stab a Luka Modric through ball into the net from close range.

Benzema scored a scrappy second goal in the 62nd but moments later Alaves pulled one back when striker Joselu slotted in a penalty after a foul by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Substitute Vinicius Jr added a final goal for the visitors in stoppage time, netting with a diving header as he met a cross from debutant David Alaba.

French striker Benzema was Real`s standout player last season with 23 league strikes, more than a third of the team`s goal haul, and his form earned him a recall to the France squad for the first time in six years.

Ancelotti marvelled at Benzema`s performance and said he was a better player than when he coached him at Real between 2013 and 2015, when the Frenchman was more of a support striker for Cristiano Ronaldo.

"To call Benzema just a striker does not do him justice. He is a very complete player, far more complete than five years ago," the Italian coach said.

"He is the one who finishes our moves off but he also reads the game so well."

The Italian also criticised his side for their sluggish start but was pleased with how they improved after halftime.

"The first half we were a little slow when we had the ball and when we didn`t have it, we needed to press with more intensity, the game was slow and that`s not what we wanted," he added.

"But we were much better in the second half, we showed more intensity and had more quality."

Real got to play in front of fans for the first time in a league game since March 2020 although fewer than 4,000 spectators were allowed into Alaves` Mendizorrotza stadium due to the local government`s coronavirus restrictions.

The few supporters present were nearly given an early treat when midfielder Pere Pons pounced on a loose ball inside the area but failed to keep his shot under the crossbar.

Alaves also appealed for a penalty in the first half against Real`s Lucas Vazquez when he blocked a cross although the referee correctly ruled that the ball had struck his chest rather his arm.

Madrid lined up with a front three of Benzema, Hazard and Gareth Bale, who was making his LaLiga return after spending last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur.
Hazard has hardly got going in his two seasons with Real but looked sharp while Bale had a couple of attempts on goal without causing goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco too much trouble.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool all served notice of their title intentions with crushing wins as the Premier League enjoyed a return to its familiar format on Saturday. With full-capacity crowds back for the first time since March 2020, Manchester United got things going in the early kickoff with a 5-1 hammering of Leeds United as Bruno Fernandes netted a hat-trick and Paul Pogba making four assists. Chelsea then outclassed Crystal Palace 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in one of five 3pm kickoffs before Liverpool, with key defender Virgil van Dijk back after a nine-month absence, eased to a 3-0 win at promoted Norwich City. 🎯 Marcos Alonso's strike was @ChelseaFC's 5️⃣0️⃣th direct free-kick goal in #PL history, with only Man Utd (64) netting more in the competition#CHECRY pic.twitter.com/syrSaMiOT8 — Premier League (@premierleague) August 15, 2021 × While the three points were important to respective managers Thomas Tuchel, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Juergen Klopp -- they all acknowledged it was a special day for England's top flight with the empty stadiums of the COVID-19 era replaced by the sounds of passionate fans. "You get the butterflies again," Solskjaer said. "Suddenly it's a game that matters." Klopp applauded Liverpool's travelling fans and the Norwich faithful at Carrow Road. "The occasion was great. It was exactly what we expected and what we'd missed for so long," Klopp said. "I applauded the Norwich fans as well because it's so nice to have fans back, wherever they come from." Roberto Firmino’s goal in #NORLIV was the 4️⃣9️⃣th scored by a substitute for @LFC under Jürgen Klopp in the #PL – the most of any side in the competition since the German joined in 2015 🦸‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/aG56ec4W10 — Premier League (@premierleague) August 15, 2021 × European champions Chelsea treated a large Stamford Bridge crowd to a dazzling display, with goals from Marcos Alonso, Christian Pulisic and academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah making it a forgettable day for Palace's new manager Patrick Vieira. Chelsea are earmarked as the side most likely to challenge champions Manchester City for the title and they did nothing to suggest otherwise as they made do without new signing Romelu Lukaku who is still observing quarantine restrictions after his 97.5-million-pound ($135 million) move from Inter Milan. "We were pretty sharp," Tuchel, whose side won the European Supercup on Wednesday, said. "It looked easier than it was. "Some players we pushed with 120 minutes over the line already and they stepped up again. We set our standards as high as possible. It was a huge team effort." United were equally impressive as they ran riot against Leeds United having been pegged back to 1-1 when a Luke Ayling thunderbolt cancelled out Fernandes's first-half effort. Mason Greenwood fired United back in front before Fernandes added a quickfire third to put Solskjaer's side in command and the Portuguese completed his treble with another fine finish before Brazilian Fred completed the rout. United gave new signing Jadon Sancho a late substitute appearance while they also have Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani to come back after missing Saturday's rout. "It has been a very, very good day," Solskjaer said. "When Bruno gets goals like this, timing his runs, it does not really matter who scores. We definitely have loads of forwards who can chip in.
Aston Villa could be missing striker Ollie Watkins for their Premier League opener at promoted Watford on Saturday but new signing Emiliano Buendia is fit, manager Dean Smith told a news conference on Friday.

Watkins hurt his knee in a friendly against Salernitana and Smith said it was touch and go whether he would be available.

"We`re not too sure about Ollie at the moment, he went off with a knee injury (against Salernitana) which was bone bruising, so if he`s pain free today he`ll train, if he`s not then he won`t train and he won`t be available.

"So we`ll pretty much be guided by Ollie himself."

Buendia, signed from Norwich City for a fee of around 43 million pounds ($59.37 million), has recovered from a niggle says Smith.

"Emi had a slight injury so we didn`t risk him in the game against Salernitana, but he`s available, he`s trained all week," Smith said.

Playmaker Buendia will be expected to be fill the boots of Jack Grealish who signed for champions Manchester City in a British record deal of 100 million pounds.

Smith says that while it was disappointing to lose club talisman Grealish, the signings of the likes of Buendia, striker Danny Ings and winger Leon Bailey means the squad is actually in better shape than last season.

"That was the important thing for us that we strengthened the squad depth this season," Smith said. "We felt we had an XI who could compete against anybody, including the top teams last season. Now we`ve got more variation, more adaptability and more depth, and that`s really important for us this season.

"Obviously Jack going is a big loss, we wanted to keep him here. But I think we`re in a good place, our business has been good, we`ve raised 100 million pounds for a young lad who came through the academy here at Aston Villa. And we`ve made him into a British record transfer."

Their equalizer came as no surprise in a lively match with several scoring chances squandered on both sides and both keepers making key saves. Gerard Moreno -- who scored against Manchester United before the Europa League final in Gdansk went to penalties -- rescued Unai Emery's side in the 73rd with a side-foot finish after a back-heel from Boulaye Dia. It was Moreno's eighth goal in his last nine European appearances for Villarreal. "It was tough, 120 minutes," said Tuchel. "We were very strong in the first 30-35 minutes and then we lost a bit easy balls after our goal... the equalizer was well-deserved. "Right after we conceded the goal we were very strong again, right until the end." Pulisic had a good chance in the 99th, the ball just running wide, while Mason Mount had a shot pushed out for a corner in the 108th. Chelsea now turn their thoughts to the start of the Premier League season, and the imminent signing of striker Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, with an opening match at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Football: 'It is hard for everyone, but we have to move on,' Ronald Koeman on Lionel Messi's departure

Argentinian football ace Lionel Messi has opened up on his shocking exit from Barcelona and stated that a move for Paris club PSG is a "possibility". Messi was in tears at the beginning of Sunday's press conference, during which he was energetically applauded by teammates and reporters.

He started by confirming that he is leaving Barcelona, where he spent his entire professional career.

Lionel Messi turned into a free agent upon the termination of his last agreement at Barcelona in June, and the club affirmed on Friday that they have not been able to secure him to another arrangement because of monetary and structural deterrents.

The Blaugrana couldn't re-sign the 34-year-old without surpassing La Liga's compensation limit, which means the six-time Ballon d'Or victor will currently be compelled to track down another club, and he concedes that the entire circumstance has come as an extraordinary shock to him.

"I gave everything for this club from the first day I arrived to the last. I never imagined having to say goodbye as I didn't think about it. What's clear is I did everything possible, and they couldn't do it because of La Liga.

"A lot of things have been said about me, but on my behalf, we did everything I could because I wanted to stay. Last year I didn't want to stay and I said it. This year I did and I couldn't.

The Argentine was likewise inquired as to whether reports of Paris Saint-Germain being his most probable next objective are valid, to which he reacted: “Paris Saint-Germain is a possibility, yes. At the moment nothing is confirmed, I received a lot of calls after the Barcelona statement. We’re talking about it."

“The picture with Paris Saint-Germain was a coincidence, completely. I met them in Ibiza, we got together one day, we are friends. He called me and said I'm in Ibiza, we'll get together and there was a joke at the time, come to Paris. But it was a joke,” he added.

I met them in Ibiza, we got together one day, we are friends. He called me and said I'm in Ibiza, we'll get together and there was a joke at the time, come to Paris. But it was a joke,” he added.
