World soccer`s governing body FIFA and World Athletics said on Monday that they are reviewing their transgender eligibility policies after swimming passed new rules that restrict transgender participation in women`s events. On Sunday, swimming`s world governing body FINA voted to restrict the participation of transgender athletes in elite women`s competitions and create a working group to establish an `open` category for them in some events as part of its new policy.

The new policy states that male-to-female transgender swimmers (transgender women) are eligible to compete in women`s competitions only if "they can establish to FINA`s comfortable satisfaction that they have not experienced any part of male puberty beyond Tanner Stage 2 (of puberty) or before age 12, whichever is later".

A spokesperson for FIFA told Reuters it was in a consultation process over a new policy. "FIFA is currently reviewing its gender eligibility regulations in consultation with expert stakeholders," said the spokesperson.

"Due to the ongoing nature of the process, FIFA is not in a position to comment on specifics of proposed amendments to the existing regulations," the spokesperson added.

Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics, told the BBC that the organisation`s council would discuss their regulations at the end of the year. Coe praised FINA for taking the decision, which has been criticised by trans rights advocates.

"We see an international federation asserting its primacy in setting rules, regulations and policies that are in the best interest of its sport," he told the BBC.

"This is as it should be. We have always believed that biology trumps gender and we will continue to review our regulations in line with this. We will follow the science.

"We continue to study, research and contribute to the growing body of evidence that testosterone is a key determinant in performance, and have scheduled a discussion on our regulations with our council at the end of the year," he added.

FIFA said it was taking guidance from medical, legal, scientific, performance and human rights experts and also the position of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

"Should FIFA be asked to verify the eligibility of a player before the new regulations will be in place, any such case will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, taking into account FIFA’s clear commitment to respect human rights," the spokesperson said.

Last year, the IOC issued a `framework` on the issue, leaving eligibility decisions up to individual sports bodies, but adding that "until evidence determines otherwise, athletes should not be deemed to have an unfair or disproportionate competitive advantage due to their sex variations, physical appearance and/or transgender status".

World Athletics` current rules cap testosterone levels at five nanomoles per litre (5nmol/L) for transgender athletes and for competitors with differences in sex development (DSD) in some women`s running events.

Coe said it was important to protect the integrity of women`s sport.

"When push comes to shove, if it`s a judgement between inclusion and fairness, we will always fall down on the side of fairness - that for me is non-negotiable.

"We can`t have a generation of young girls thinking there is not a future for them in the sport. So we have a responsibility…maintaining the primacy and the integrity of female competition is absolutely vital," he added.

Last week the International Cycling Union (UCI) tightened its rules on transgender participation by increasing the transition period on low testosterone to two years and reducing the maximum permitted testosterone level.

Portugal fired two goals in five minutes to beat the Czech Republic in UEFA Nations League on Thursday (June 9). The victory has allowed Portugal to open a two-point lead at the top of Group A2. Joao Cancelo and Goncalo Guedes scored the winning goals in 33rd and 38th minutes respectively. This win in Lisbon has underlined Portugal's strong start in the tournament.

Portugal is now two points clear of Spain. They have won two and drawn one of their first three games.

The Czech Republic started the match level on points with their opponents but drop to third, after Spain defeated Switzerland 1-0 in Geneva.

The Czech team will travel to Spain on Sunday while Portugal will play away match in Switzerland.

Portugal had to go through the play-offs to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, beating Turkey and North Macedonia to avoid an embarrassing exit.

But this convincing win came after they claimed a 1-1 draw away against Spain in their opening fixture before thrashing Switzerland 4-0 in the second, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice.

Cancelo also got on the scoresheet there and the Manchester City defender made it two goals in as many matches by scoring just after the half-hour against the Czechs.

It came from some brilliant work by Bernardo Silva, who wriggled free on the right and found his City teammate inside him, who fired in.

Five minutes later, it was two and again Bernardo was at the heart of it, sliding through Guedes, who swept a superb finish beyond Jindrich Stanek.

UEFA Nations League: Portugal thrash Czechs with two goals in five minutes

Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri believes a ban from FIFA will be catastrophic for Indian football. Chhetri said it will be disastrous not just for the whole country but also for him as he is in the final lap of his career and would like to finish on a high. Team India faces a potential ban from FIFA after the Supreme Court of India ousted Praful Patel as the president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) recently.

Patel, a member of the FIFA council, was ousted by the Supreme Court after he didn't call for fresh elections at AIFF despite completing three four-year terms as president. He was not eligible for another term, as per the National Sports Code. The Supreme Court appointed a Committee of Administrators (CoA) to run the board after ousting Patel and his team.

The Indian team can now be banned by FIFA for alleged interference in governance and Chhetri believes such a move can prove to be disastrous for Indian football. 37-year-old Chettri, who believes he is playing his final few games for the country, said he hopes India can avoid the ban.

"I hope everything will come out as good for the sport and the country does not get a ban," Chhetri told reporters ahead of the Asian Cup Qualifiers in Kolkata.

"The ban will be catastrophic not just for the whole country but for me, because I'm 37. You never know when there's the last game for you," he added.

One of India's most decorated footballers of all time, Chhetri has been the country's saviour on the football pitch for a number of years now. He has arguably been one of the finest strikers to have played for the Blue Tigers and is currently among the top active goalscorers in international football.

However, Chhetri has hinted on several occasions that he is likely to hang up his boots soon and will take a call on his illustrious career. Chhetri responded to the speculations over his retirement and said - "Right now, I'm enjoying my game. The day I don't, I'll be done, I can't give you a number when."

Can FIFA ban India?

FIFA - football's governing body has a zero-tolerance policy towards any external management of member associations. FIFA is strictly against any government interference in running the sport in a country. In the past, FIFA has banned several countries for a few years due to the government's interference in the independent running of the football federations.

India might face the wrath of the FIFA as the AIFF is not working independently anymore and is being run by a Committee of Administrators appointed by the Supreme Court of India.

West Ham United defender Kurt Zouma has been ordered to do 180 hours of community service and banned from keeping cats for five years after pleading guilty to kicking and slapping his pet cat, a London court ruled on Wednesday.

Zouma admitted two offences under the Animal Welfare Act at the Thames Magistrates` Court last month after a viral video, filmed by his brother Yoan and posted on social media in February, showed him dropping one of his cats and kicking it across the floor.

The Frenchman`s brother was sentenced to 140 hours of community service.

"Both of you took part in this disgraceful and reprehensible act with this pet cat," said district judge Susan Holdham.

"The cat looked up to you to care for its needs. On that date in February you did not provide for its needs."
Zouma`s two Bengal cats have since been placed under the care of animal charity RSPCA.

The 27-year-old, who was fined by West Ham for the incident, lost his sponsorship deal with sportswear brand Adidas and was also jeered by fans during a Premier League game against Watford in February.

Zouma, however, continued to enjoy the support of manager David Moyes and made 33 appearances across competitions as West Ham finished seventh in the league and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League.

BBC News issued an on-air apology to Manchester United fans on Tuesday (May 24) after a message ran on their news ticker calling the club 'rubbish'. United, who are one of the most successful clubs in English football, endured a disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded 2021-22 season as they failed to finish inside the top four in the Premier League. The pictures of BBC's gaffe during a live show soon went viral on social media inviting angry reactions from some United fans.

The incident happened during a live broadcast on Tuesday when the message 'Manchester United are rubbish' flashed up for a few seconds in the ticker. The ticker is a strip at the bottom of the screen which has current headlines running on it. BBC was quick to realise their mistake and issued an apology to those offended.

BBC presenter Annita McVeigh, who was presenting during the gaffe, read out an apology and revealed the message popped due to the mistake of a trainee, who was trying to learn how to use the ticker. McVeigh further said that the message was not supposed to appear on the screen.

“Just while we are on the subject of football, a little earlier some of you may have noticed something pretty unusual on the ticker that runs along the bottom of the screen with news. “Let me just explain what was happening. Behind the scenes, someone was training to learn how to use the ticker and to put text on the ticker so they were just writing random things. That comment appeared, so apologies if you saw that and we offended and you’re a fan of Manchester United. But certainly, that was a mistake and it wasn’t meant to appear on the screen," she added.

While the gaffe from BBC did not go down well with some fans, some saw the funny side to it and had fun at the expense of United, who were awful last season despite having one of the best squads in the Premier League. United struggled under both former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and interim manager Ralf Rangick to miss out on a Champions League spot.

United will now look for a fresh start as they gear up to begin a new era under new manager Erik Ten Hag, who has arrived from Dutch club Ajax with an aim to help United get back among the best clubs in the world and dominate again.

BBC issues on-air apology after 'Manchester United are rubbish' ticker message

A libel trial pitting the wives of two former England soccer strikers Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy saw Vardy`s wife Rebekah take the stand on Tuesday and deny accusations she had leaked stories to the press about Rooney`s wife Coleen.

Their battle, mixing glamour, amateur sleuthing and intimate revelations has gripped the media and public. Coleen Rooney, 36, is the wife of former England ace Wayne who holds the record for the most international goals for his country, and Rebekah Vardy`s husband Jamie has also played and scored for the national side

Vardy, 40, is suing her former friend for libel after Rooney accused her of leaking stories about her after staging an elaborate sting operation to find out who was passing on details of her private life to the Sun tabloid.

The battle has been dubbed the "WAGatha Christie" case, a reference to the "WAG" moniker given to the glamorous group of footballers` wives and girlfriends and Rooney`s detective work.

"I didn`t leak anything," Vardy told London`s High Court, on the first day of the trial, having passed by Rooney and her husband to reach the witness box. "I didn`t give any information to a newspaper."

The intrigue began almost three years ago when Rooney became suspicious about stories appearing in the Sun involving information about her from her personal Instagram account. She turned detective to try to find out who the culprit was.

She said she blocked everyone from viewing her account except one person and then posted a series of false stories to see whether they leaked out, which she said they had. She wrote on her social media accounts that only one person had viewed the false stories, concluding with the revelation: "It`s ... Rebekah Vardy`s account."

Facing questions from David Sherborne, Rooney`s lawyer, Vardy agreed leaking private, personal information was wrong. She was then quizzed about a 2004 newspaper interview she had given in which she detailed a sexual encounter with singer Peter Andre with derogatory details about his genitalia.

"I was forced into doing something I didn`t want to do," she told the packed wood-panelled courtroom, blaming her ex-husband for making her do the interview. "It was something that I was forced to say."

Sherborne also asked her about a message exchange she had with her agent Caroline Watt in 2017 about photoshopped photos of an unnamed friend to make her look thinner in which Vardy said: "Can we not leak a story?"
Vardy told the court she "didn`t mean it to say that" and she had wanted to do a story about promoting positive body image.

Earlier Hugh Tomlinson, Vardy`s lawyer, had said his client had received abuse and threats online, after Rooney`s post - constructed he said like a "mini-whodunnit" - had been liked by 193,000 people on Instagram and 300,000 on Twitter.

"She needs to be able to clear her name," Tomlinson said.

Sherborne argued Vardy had conducted a campaign of "deliberate destruction of evidence" by deleting media files and WhatsApp messages.

"Like any good detective story, you never find the person responsible standing over the body with the smoking gun in her hand," Sherborne said.

He suggested that Vardy had used her agent Watt as a "hitman" to leak the stories on her behalf. Vardy has accepted that Watt might be responsible, but denied any knowledge or authorising her to do so, Tomlinson said.

"She accepts that it`s possible that Ms Watt was the source," he told the court.

In a plot twist of which Agatha Christie herself might have approved, Watt`s phone had ended up at the bottom of the

North Sea after she accidentally dropped it over the side of a boat. The trial is due to last seven days with Rooney, who will have to prove that her accusations are either substantially true or in the public interest, and her husband due to give evidence.

China`s withdrawal from hosting the 2023 Asian Cup could see the showpiece shift west to the Gulf, where new infrastructure and voracious demand for major events has made the region a magnet for international tournaments.

Having planned to hold the Asian Cup across 10 cities in June-July next year, China dropped the 24-team tournament due to "exceptional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic", the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said over the weekend.

The AFC said it would name a new host in due course but provided no detail and declined to provide immediate comment to Reuters. AFC member nations were in the dark on Monday about the next steps.

"This is quite an unusual situation and so there’s no specific process that we are aware of on how things could go," a spokesperson for the Korean Football Association (KFA) told Reuters.

"We just know that China has given up."

The AFC has little time to appraise candidates and may not have a diverse set to choose from. Governing body Football Australia declined to comment on whether it would put up its hand to replace China but referred to its busy calendar in 2023 as co-hosts of the Women`s World Cup with New Zealand, which starts on July 20.

All India Football Federation general secretary Kushal Das said India, which held the 2022 women`s Asian Cup this year, was focusing on its bid for the 2027 men`s tournament and had not expressed interest in stepping in for 2023.

South Korea, which originally lost out on its 2023 bid to China, had no comment on hosting but said it would require further consultation with home authorities.

"Basically, to host an international game .... firstly there should be talks with the government and the local authorities, but we haven’t heard or held any discussions on that yet," the KFA spokesperson said.

Apart from India, reigning Asian Cup champions Qatar, Iran and Saudi Arabia have all expressed an interest or submitted bids for 2027.

Qatar hosts the 2022 World Cup from Nov. 21 at a raft of purpose-built stadiums and may be best placed to slot in for the Asian Cup.

The 1988 and 2011 Asian Cup hosts, Qatar`s ambitions of becoming a global sporting hub have been backed by its ruling emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and underpinned by its gas wealth.

It may come too soon for Saudi Arabia, which has made an aggressive entry into the international sport hosting market in recent years. The Saudi bid for 2027 included the building of three new stadiums and expansion of three existing venues.

The region`s searing summers would mean both Qatar and Saudi Arabia would need to ask the AFC to move the tournament to cooler months later in the year or in early-2024.

Should few clear alternatives emerge, the AFC would likely prove accommodating to such a request, sending the tournament back to the Gulf four years after the 2019 edition in the United Arab Emirates.

Erling Haaland set to join Manchester City, move likely to be completed this week - Report

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick said that his request for a striker at the end of the January transfer window was turned down by the club despite the Old Trafford side losing Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood during that period.

Martial joined Sevilla on loan while Greenwood was suspended by United over rape and assault allegations.
Rangnick said that Porto`s Luis Diaz, Julian Alvarez of River Plate and Fiorentina`s Dusan Vlahovic were on his wishlist but the German was told that "there was no player on the market that could really help us".

"We had four days off at the time and on the Sunday I was informed about the issues with Mason Greenwood and obviously Anthony Martial had already left," Rangnick told reporters ahead of Saturday`s league trip to Brighton & Hove Albion.

"I was aware that within four days we had some strikers missing and it might make sense, we were still in three competitions - Champions League, FA Cup and fourth in the league. I spoke to the board... but in the end the answer was no."

Diaz has since joined Liverpool and flourished while Vlahovic has moved to Juventus and Alvarez will play for champions Manchester City next season.

I spoke to the board... but in the end the answer was no." Spanish footballer Santi Mina has been handed a four-year prison sentence after being found guilty of sexual abuse. Mina, who plays as a striker for La Liga club Celta Vigo, is all set to appeal against the verdict. The former Spain U-21 forward was on a trial for the incident which took place in 2017.

At the time Mina was playing for La Liga giants Valencia. He was accused of forcing himself on a woman against her wishes. His former Valencia teammate David Goldar was accused of being his accomplice. While Goldar has been acquitted of all charges, Mina has been sentenced to prison.

The court of Almeria has also imposed a fine of €50,000 on the Celta Vigo star, who has been a regular starter for his club during the ongoing La Liga season. He has been acquitted of sexual assault in the case but has been charged for sexual abuse. His lawyers have confirmed that will appeal against the verdict.

Mina will have to serve the four-year prison sentence if the appeal against the verdict is turned down by the court. Mina would have faced a longer prison sentence of around 8-9 years had he been also found guilty of sexual assault. Judge Tarsila Martinez announced the verdict in the case which has been dragging on for several years now.

Lionel Messi paid tribute to Argentina fans in what could be their last home game before November’s World Cup finals and said the raucous support in their 3-0 win over Venezuela was vital in preserving his happiness.

“I didn’t expect anything less of people, of the union between the Argentina public and this team,” Messi said after their comfortable win at Boca Juniors’ Bombonera stadium.

The seven-time Ballon d`Or winner has struggled at Paris Saint Germain since signing from Barcelona in August 2021 but he was as spritely as ever against a poor Venezuela side and the adoration of the home crowd was evident.

Argentina fans revere Messi, and all the more so since he led them to the Copa America in 2021 - their first major international honour in 28 years.

The feeling is mutual, with Messi leading his team mates on a victory lap around the ground and chanting and singing along with the 50,000 crowd.

“I’ve been happy here for a long time, since before we won the Copa America,” Messi said.

“People have shown that they love me and I am grateful for that. Everything flows naturally, that makes it easier on and off the pitch.”

Friday's game marked Messi's return to the national side after being rested for Argentina’s previous two World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia.

He made several unsuccessful attempts at goal from free kicks outside the box but eventually score the third, a curious miskick meters from goal.

Messi chested down a pass from Angel Di Maria and although he didn’t connect cleanly it was enough to beat Venezuela's diving goalkeeper.

Netherlands football team coach Louis Van Gaal has slammed FIFA for awarding the hosting rights for the upcoming 2022 World Cup to Qatar. The legendary Dutch football manager has termed FIFA's decision to host the showpiece event in the country as 'ridiculous' and claimed money and commercial interests are the real reasons behind Qatar being awarded the hosting rights.

FIFA's decision to host the 2022 World Cup in Qatar had sparked massive outrage in the football world in 2010 when it was first announced. Ever since then, a number of players and football coaches have come out and spoken against the world football's governing body's decision to award the hosting rights to the country.

Several media outlets and human rights groups over the years have raised issues regarding Qatar's questionable human rights record and unfair treatment of migrant workers among other controversies. There have also been allegations of bribery against FIFA officials with many arguing if FIFA's bidding process was a fair one.

Reports have also claimed that thousands of migrant workers have died in Qatar during the construction of the stadiums for the FIFA World Cup 2022. Van Gaal has become the latest to lash out at FIFA for hosting the showpiece event in Qatar and said FIFA's claims that they want to develop football in Qatar is 'bullsh*t'.

"I have already mentioned it in previous press conferences. I think it's ridiculous that the World Cup is there," Van Gaal told reporters on Monday.

“We are playing in a country that FIFA says they want to develop football there. That's bullshit, but it doesn't matter. It's about money, about commercial interests. That matters in FIFA.

"Why do you think I'm not on any committee at FIFA or UEFA with my expertise? Because I have always opposed these kinds of organizations. I can say that in Qatar later, but that won't help the world get rid of this problem," he added.

Manchester United are currently in turmoil as they desperately seek to get their Premier League campaign on track. United have not enjoyed the best of results under current interim boss Ralph Rangnick and fear missing out on a spot in the top four which will see them fail to make it to the Champions League next season.

While their on-field performances have come under the scanner, United have also been marred with several off-field issues of late. Recently, reports had surfaced stating there is a rift between club captain Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo, and that the two players are involved in a power struggle at the club.

On Friday, Maguire took to Twitter to rubbish the rumours of a power struggle between him and Ronaldo. Maguire has been below-par in a number of matches this season and reportedly feels undermined by Ronaldo's influence in the dressing room. However, Maguire has denied the reports and said the claims are not true.

“I’ve seen a lot of reports about this club that aren’t true and this is another. Not going to start posting about everything that is written but I needed to make this one clear. We’re united and focused on Sunday. Enjoy your day everyone," Maguire wrote in a tweet.

After a string of poor results, Manchester United bounced back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Brighton in their last Premier League outing. Ronaldo, who had gone for six games without scoring, finally managed to bring an end to his goal drought with a stunning strike against Brighton.

Manchester United jumped back into the top four in the Premier League table with their win and will be hoping to continue their winning run against Leeds United on Sunday. While Maguire has denied reports of a power tussle with Ronaldo, recent reports have suggested that Ronaldo is in talks with Rangnick to take over the captaincy from Maguire.

It is believed that the additional pressure of captaincy being taken off will help Maguire in regaining his lost form in the league. While Maguire has produced several disappointing performances, Ronaldo has also seen his performances dip on several occasions so far this season.

Brazil star Neymar says next year's World Cup in Qatar could be the last of his career.

The comments by the 29-year-old striker were made in the documentary Neymar & The Line Of Kings, produced by DAZN. An excerpt was published on the channel's Twitter feed on Sunday.

"Man, I think it will be my last World Cup," Neymar said.

"I am facing it like the last World Cup because I don't know whether I will be able to, mentally, to endure more soccer."

"I will do everything possible to get there very well," he added.

"I will do all I can to win it with my country and realize my dream, the biggest since my boyhood. I hope I can achieve it."

Neymar will play with Brazil later on Sunday at Colombia in a World Cup qualifying match. The Seleo leads the 10-team round robin competition with 27 points after nine games.

The striker did not play in Thursday's 3-1 Brazil win at Venezuela due to suspension.

The match in Barranquilla will mark Neymar's return since the 2-0 win against Peru on Sept. 10, in which he turned in a key Brazil performance with an assist and a goal. Despite his efforts, Neymar made clear after the match that he is upset with the treatment he gets at home.

I don't know what else I need to do with this shirt for people to respect Neymar, he said. Local media accused the striker of being out of shape in the 1-0 win at Chile earlier in September, which prompted the striker to walk around shirtless during training to show how fit he is.

Against Peru, Neymar overtook Romrio as Brazil's top goal scorer in World Cup qualifiers, with 12 goals. He is also approaching Pele's record of 77 official goals for Brazil. The Paris Saint-Germain striker has scored 69 times for Brazil.

Neymar has so far played at two World Cups. In 2014, he picked up a back injury in the quarterfinals against Colombia, which stopped him from playing in the 7-1 humiliation against Germany in the semifinals.

In the most recent edition of the tournament, Neymar had just returned from a serious foot injury and turned in an unimpressive performance in Brazil's 2-1 quarterfinals defeat to Belgium. He left Russia amid heavy criticism for his apparently exaggerated reaction to being fouled.

Neymar won the 2013 Confederations Cup title with Brazil. He has also won the gold medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. The striker was injured before the 2019 Copa America, which the Seleo won at home.

"I am facing it like the last World Cup because I don't know whether I will be able to, mentally, to endure more soccer." "I will do everything possible to get there very well," he added. "I will do all I can to win it with my country and realize my dream, the biggest since my boyhood. I hope I can achieve it." Neymar will play with Brazil later on Sunday at Colombia in a World Cup qualifying match. Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante was tested positive for COVID-19 as a result, he missed the Champions League group clash against Juventus, which took place on Wednesday (September 29) that the Blues lost 0-1.

Addressing the COVID-19 situation and vaccination process, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel told reporters that he does not know how many of his players are vaccinated. Although he has taken the jab, he will not "force" others to do so.

Analysing the current scenario, it appears that the problem related to the coronavirus vaccine — the hesitancy to take the jab, persist in several Premier League clubs, with players still refusing to take the COVID-19 shot.

It has been revealed that 13 of the 20 clubs in the top division have squads where fewer than 50 per cent of the players are fully vaccinated against coronavirus.

The Daily Mail reported that the Premier League has written to clubs informing them of plans to "reward" teams who have the highest numbers of vaccinated players.

The letter, which was sent to clubs last week, highlighted that Premier League is stepping up its efforts to ensure more players are fully vaccinated due to fears over a slow uptake.

The letter as quoted by the media portal read: "According to the data we have, only seven clubs' squads are more than 50 per cent fully vaccinated, so we have a way to go."

"We are considering if and how best we can 'reward' those squads/players who are most Covid-compliant and who have opted to be vaccinated," it added.

"It is increasingly clear that full vaccination will be the key criteria for Government and health authorities, in terms of international travel and potential Covid certification at large scale events,'" a part of the letter read.

Sportsmail revealed last week that at least two Premier League sides have no more than six players vaccinated. On the other hand, Wolves, Brentford and Leeds have reported between 89 and 100 per cent vaccination levels.

When we talk about the COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom, the number of daily new infections has risen in the past month, which is reportedly fuelled by the Delta variant and authorities are worried as the winter season is approaching.

Now, Premier League players who are fully vaccinated will be allowed to travel to countries on the UK's red list during the international break and will be allowed to train or play when they quarantine on return, the government said on Friday (October 1).

Many clubs refused to release players to 'red list' countries such as Brazil and Argentina last month and the Premier League is looking to avoid a similar situation which angered national federations.

The strict COVID-19 quarantine rules require those who return to England from a red list country to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days, but players will now be quarantined at "bespoke facilities" and will be allowed to train or play.

How Premier League can avert the COVID-19 crisis as majority of players not getting jabbed?

A man who racially abused West Bromwich Albion midfielder Romaine Sawyers online received an eight-week prison sentence on Thursday.

Simon Silwood, 50, targeted Sawyers after West Bromwich lost 5-0 to Manchester City in an English Premier League match in January. Birmingham Magistrates Court found him guilty of having posted a "grossly offensive message".

West Bromwich banned Silwood for life earlier this month.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that during his police interview, Silwood admitted to posting a message on social media after becoming upset by the 5-0 defeat but blamed an error made by using predictive text.

The judge said his message was "motivated by or demonstrated hostility based on race".

"Silwood deliberately chose a word known to have clear racist connotations to abuse a footballer due to the colour of his skin. Such behaviour will not be tolerated in football and will be prosecuted by the CPS," said Mark Johnson of the CPS.

The court ordered Silwood to pay 500 pounds ($684) in compensation and 500 pounds in court costs.

West Bromwich were relegated at the end of last season.

Sawyers said he welcomed the custodial sentence and was now focused on putting the incident behind him, adding that he would donate the 500 pounds awarded to a local West Midlands charity.

"I hope this case will serve as a deterrent to others," he said in a statement https://www.wba.co.uk/news/statement-romaine-sawyers.

"This is an incident that has affected me deeply, but I would like to encourage fellow players to report all racial abuse to the police.

"It is widely accepted that social media companies must do more to stop the publication of racism on their platforms. I again urge them to take the necessary action required to prevent anyone from receiving the abuse I experienced."

Several players have been subjected to racial abuse online in recent months, especially in the Premier League, and English soccer has been urging social media firms to do more to tackle the problem.

European football's governing body UEFA has urged FIFA to stop pushing its plan for a two-year World Cup and instead to engage in "genuine consultation" over reform of the international match calendar.

FIFA is conducting a feasibility study into holding the World Cup on a biennial basis, a change from the current four- yearly cycle, but has made no secret of its desire to switch to such a format.

Arsene Wenger, the former Arsenal manager who is now FIFA's head of Global Football Development, said this month he was "100% convinced" of the switch.

"UEFA is disappointed with the methodology adopted, which has so far led to radical reform projects being communicated and openly promoted before having been given, together with other stakeholders, the chance to participate in any consultation meeting," UEFA said in a statement on Wednesday.

UEFA said there were numerous concerns about the impact of such a switch including the "dilution" of the World Cup's value, risks of players being over-worked and women's football suffering from annual men's tournaments.

"These are just some of the serious concerns that the FIFA proposal provokes at first glance and they cannot be dispelled simply with unsubstantiated promotional slogans on the supposed benefits of a thicker calendar for final tournaments," the statement added.

UEFA said it had asked, on September 14, for a meeting with FIFA and the 55 European member associations but has yet to get a reply.

FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin warned this month of a potential European boycott of the World Cup if FIFA's plans went ahead.

"We can decide not to play in it," Ceferin, head of European soccer's governing body, told The Times newspaper.

"As far as I know, the South Americans are on the same page. So good luck with a World Cup like that.

"I think it will never happen as it is so much against the basic principles of football.

Sadio Mane scored his 100th Liverpool goal as the Senegal star inspired a 3-0 win against Crystal Palace that sent his side top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Mane's milestone strike came in his 224th appearance for the Reds, breaking Palace's rearguard action late in the first half at Anfield.

Egypt forward Mohamed Salah and Guinea midfielder Naby Keita netted in the second half to move Jurgen Klopp's team three points clear of second-placed Manchester City.

It was fitting that Mane should make it to his century against Palace as he set a new Premier League record for the most consecutive games a player has scored against one opponent.

It was the ninth successive match that Mane had netted against Palace.

More importantly for Klopp, Mane already has four goals this term, suggesting he is ready to put last season's disappointing personal campaign behind him.

After Liverpool's lacklustre, injury-hit defence of the Premier League title, they are back in the groove in the chase to regain the trophy from Manchester City.

Klopp's men have opened the season with an unbeaten run of four wins from five games, with just one goal conceded and 12 scored.

French defender Ibrahima Konate, signed from Leipzig in the close season, was handed his Liverpool debut as one of six changes from the midweek Champions League win over AC Milan.

Klopp switched his entire back four, with Virgil van Dijk returning, James Milner playing on the right instead of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kostas Tsimikas replacing Andy Robertson.

Initially, Liverpool seemed unsettled by Klopp's alterations and Palace nearly took advantage of a defensive blunder that ended with Alisson Becker pushing Wilfried Zaha's shot onto the post.

Diogo Jota led the Liverpool response as the Portugal forward fired across goal from a tight angle.

Jordan Henderson scored Liverpool's winner against AC Milan and the England midfielder was close to netting again when his half-volley from Mane's cross forced Vicente Guaita to make a good stop.

Jota missed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock, firing over from three yards after the ball was palmed out to him by Guaita.

But Mane ended Palace's spirited resistance in the 43rd minute.

Salah's header from Tsimikas' corner was saved by Guaita and Mane pounced to slam the rebound past the Palace keeper.

Alisson had to make a fine save from Joel Ward's drive to preserve Liverpool's lead at the interval.

Palace were inches away from earning a second-half penalty when Conor Gallagher was tripped right on the edge of the area.

Christian Benteke wasted the free-kick, before Van Dijk headed just over at the other end.

Keita's shot was repelled by Guaita, who scrambled to his feet to deny Salah's follow-up attempt.

Salah wouldn't be denied a goal for long and the Egypt star delivered the knockout blow in the 78th minute.

Van Dijk helped on a Liverpool corner and Salah was perfectly placed to slot home at the far post.

Olympiakos centre-back Ruben Semedo was released on 10,000 euros ($11,860) bail on Thursday after the Portuguese international was accused of rape.

The examining magistrate and the prosecutor agreed the 27-year-old, accused of the rape of a 17-year-old girl, could be released without any restrictive conditions, according to judicial officials.

Semedo, who made the last of his three Portugal appearances in November, was arrested on Sunday, after the teenage girl told police he, and a 40-year-old Nigerian man, who was arrested on Monday, had lured her back to his house and raped her.

The Sporting Lisbon academy product met the girl at a bar in the seaside town of Oropos for drinks on Saturday and then drove her to his home in the Athens suburb of Glyfada where the girl said she was raped.

He denied the accusations, admitted he had sexual intercourse with the girl with her consent and he said he did not know her age, the judicial officials told AFP.

"Do not worry my friends, you'll see," Semedo told reporters gathered outside the courtroom on Thursday.

Earlier in the day the 17-year old also testified in person, as well as the 40-year old Nigerian.

Greek champions Olympiakos said earlier this week they would take no action against the player, nor would they comment on the matter pending a judgement.

"Olympiakos fully respect the presumption of innocence," a club statement said.

Semedo has recently been linked with a move to Porto or Torino.

He joined Olympiakos two years ago on a four-year contract from Villarreal.

He left the Spanish club after being convicted of attempted murder for which he was given a five-year jail term, but he avoided going to prison in exchange for an eight-year ban on entering Spanish territory under an agreement struck in 2020. He was also fined 46,000 euros ($54,550).

The Sporting Lisbon academy product met the girl at a bar in the seaside town of Oropos for drinks on Saturday and then drove her to his home in the Athens suburb of Glyfada where the girl said she was raped. Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong is curious to discover how veteran coach Louis van Gaal goes about his business as the two work together for the first time this week in the World Cup qualifiers.

De Jong had a first training session under the 70-year-old Van Gaal on Monday as the Dutch squad assembled for three qualifiers in the space of seven days -- against Norway away on Wednesday, followed by home games in Group G against Montenegro on Saturday and Turkey next Tuesday.

"I am curious about the trainer Van Gaal," De Jong said at a news conference on Monday. "I’ve met him once before, that was it. You hear stories but I'm curious as to how the week will go.

"What do I expect? He has a charisma of his own anyway. And authority. I don't think that's a bad thing as a coach. You sometimes talk to other players about coaches and I’ve heard some stories about him, but I didn't call anyone specifically to ask about him,” the 24-year-old Barcelona midfielder said.

De Jong spoke with Van Gaal before Monday's training. "It was about anything and everything. About football, how I feel, things like that. We also talked briefly about the system of play, but I did not express a preference. You can change per game."

Van Gaal is beginning a third tenure as Dutch coach, replacing Frank de Boer, who resigned after a disappointing last-16 exit at the European Championship. He has two days to prepare the side for their match in Oslo.

FIFA, world soccer`s governing body, will receive $201 million in compensation for losses sustained in global soccer corruption schemes, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), said on Tuesday.

The money was seized from the bank accounts of former officials who were involved in the schemes and then prosecuted following a probe into years of corruption within world soccer.

Since the DOJ unveiled the corruption probe in 2015, more than 50 defendants have been criminally charged. 27 people and four corporate entities have pleaded guilty, and two people were convicted at trial.

"Today’s announcement confirms that money stolen by corrupt soccer officials and sports marketing executives through fraud and greed will be returned to where it belongs and used to benefit the sport,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Jacquelyn Kasulis for the Eastern District of New York in a statement.

“From the start, this investigation and prosecution have been focused on bringing wrongdoers to justice and restoring ill-gotten gains to those who work for the benefit of the beautiful game."

The DOJ said $32.3 million in forfeited funds has been approved for an initial distribution to FIFA, CONCACAF, the confederation responsible for soccer in North and Central America, CONMEBOL, which represents soccer in South America, and various constituent national soccer federations.

The funds will go into a new World Football Remission Fund to help finance football-related projects across the globe.

"I am delighted to see that money which was illegally siphoned out of football is now coming back to be used for its proper purposes, as it should have been in the first place," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a statement https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/organisation/media-releases/us-department-of-justice-awards-fifa-foundation-usd-201-million-compensation.

"I would like to thank the U.S. authorities for the trust placed in FIFA, and we will make sure that these funds are used properly and bring tangible benefits for people who really need it."

Many of the defendants were ordered to forfeit assets obtained through criminal activity.

Under U.S. law the DOJ has the authority to distribute the proceeds of forfeited assets to victims of crimes, including to the soccer organisations that were defrauded.

Reynaldo Vasquez, the former president of El Salvador`s soccer federation, pleaded guilty on Monday to a racketeering conspiracy charge arising from a corruption investigation involving the payment of bribes to stage and broadcast matches.

"Kickbacks and bribes have a way of spreading like a disease through corrupt groups; pure and simple greed keeps the graft going,” said Assistant Director-in-Charge Michael J. Driscoll of the FBI’s New York Field Office.

“Not one official in this investigation seemed to care about the damage being done to a sport that millions around the world revere.

"The only silver lining is the money will now help underprivileged people who need it, not the wealthy executives who just wanted it to get richer.

"Our work isn’t finished, and our promise to those who love the game - we won’t give up until everyone sees justice for what they’ve done."

FIFA to receive over $201 million in compensation from corruption probe

Jose Mourinho was never going to walk into a new job quietly, with all eyes on the new AS Roma coach on the eve of the Serie A campaign after a close season full of fireworks.

The final enduring image of Mourinho's first and trophy-laden spell in Italy, was of distraught Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi being consoled by the Portuguese after hearing of his coach's decision to leave for Real Madrid.

Having steered Inter to an unprecedented treble in 2010, Mourinho, also in tears, departed after winning everything he could in a short two-year tenure. Now back in Serie A with Roma, he returns a different proposition entirely.

Mourinho has suffered declining levels of success since leaving Italy 11 years ago, having won two league titles in that time, compared to six in the previous eight campaigns.

After several much publicised bust-ups with players during his previous two jobs in England, the new image of Mourinho is not one of player adulation and unrivalled glory, but one of a fiery, confrontational figure who is back in Italy to ruffle some feathers.

He is, however, fully aware, that the Italian media will be hanging on his every word.

"I am smiling because I had a record of 40 days without interviews," Mourinho joked on Instagram this week.

"(I had an) Amazing time where I only focused on work and forgot my friends from the press. Nothing interesting really to be honest. Love the press, (I have) missed them a lot."

He has already been causing a stir, even before the season is under way.

Roma were beaten 5-2 by Spanish side Real Betis earlier this month in a friendly. They finished a bad tempered match with just eight men, having seen three of their players sent off.

Not to be outdone, Mourinho himself was sent off by the referee for being over-zealous in his protests, getting right in the face of the official, despite the match being a friendly.

All the histrionics that come with Mourinho will all be in vain if the results do not go Roma's way, however, such is the expectation that the club need to be challenging at the top of the table.

There is already a huge mural of Mourinho on a Vespa scooter in the Testaccio neighbourhood of Rome, with the Portuguese also having a flavour of ice cream named after him in one of the Italian capital's gelato parlours.

With champions Inter Milan having lost several star players as they were forced to cut costs this summer, and Juventus entering the new campaign on the back of a below par 2020-21 season, there is renewed hope that Mourinho can get Roma challenging quickly.

"Here I go on another Mission: Impossible," Mourinho said in an interview with GQ magazine last month. "I say impossible because people tend to look at me and in their eyes there’s only one way to measure success, which is that I have to win."

Tammy Abraham's big-money arrival from Chelsea gives Mourinho an immediate replacement for outgoing veteran striker Edin Dzeko, while the return to full fitness of Nicolo Zaniolo has provided his coach with a further boost.

But without other major arrivals this summer, it is the coach that fans will be turning to for that immediate improvement.
