Australia’s Nathan Lyon produced a magical moment on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test in Ashes 2023 as he produced an early freak moment of the series contender on Friday, June 16. England batter Harry Brook was left to rue a misjudged moment on Day 1 after being dismissed by Lyon. While Brook was not so pleased with the moment, the Aussies gained the upper hand in the contest in the post-lunch session as they dismissed half of the England team.

What happened with Brook?

In the second session on Day 1, on the second ball of the 38th over, Brook failed to judge the flight of the delivery which hit him and tried to leave. While he thought that the ball has passed to the wicketkeeper, the ball hit him and went on to hit the stumps. The freak delivery dislodged the bails and saw Brook get dismissed for 32. The dismissal paved the way for the Aussies as they came back in the contest when the Bazball was gaining control on Day 1.

At the time of writing on Day 1, England were 202/5 with Joe Root unbeaten on 50 and Jonny Bairstow on 12. England will be hoping to put a respectable total on board on Day 1 as they look to continue their impressive run.

For Lyon though, the series could be crucial as he tries to reach 500 Test wickets having started the Ashes on 487 scalps from 121 matches.

England look for redemption

Having lost the Ashes 0-4 Down Under in 2021-22, England will be out for redemption as they try to get the better of the Aussies. England have not won the Ashes since 2-15 and will to end their drought of the Ashes, where they also won the ODI and the T20 World Cup. They will have history on their side as the Ashes has not been won by a host nation for more than a decade.

The last time the Ashes was won by an away team was in 2011, while the last time Australia won the Ashes on English soil was in 2001. Currently, England are also enjoying a purple patch, having won 11 matches in their last 13 matches under the captaincy of Ben Stokes, who took over as the skipper in June 2022.

ENG vs AUS Test Series: Here's your ultimate guide to 'The Ashes' 2023 between England & Australia

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has slammed the organisers of the Ashes after terming the schedule of the five-match series between England and Australia as ‘ridiculous’ on Wednesday, June 14. According to Chappell, the shorter duration of the series will take a toll on the players and they should have scheduled a Test match in August. The Ashes 2023 will start on Friday, June 16 at the Edgbaston as all the matches will be played in a span of a month and a half.

Chappell takes dig at organisers

“It's a nightmare for all players, both physically and mentally, particularly the fast bowlers and I don't think there's any way in the world that either side is going to get through five Tests using the same bowling players all the way. I think the extra players are going to come in handy and that's one thing that'll probably suit Australia," Chappell said while he spoke with Wide World of Sports Outside the Rope.

“It's ridiculous, the schedule, I mean the schedule's been ridiculous for a long time but that is stupidity. There's not a Test played in August so that tells you how quickly they're playing them," he added.

The upcoming Ashes will be the first time Ben Stokes leads his side against the Aussies in the red-ball format having taken charge of the side in June 2022. He along with coach Brendon McCullum have been pivotal to England’s success in the longer format as they have won 11 of the 13 matches in the last 12 months.

Aussies to replicate 2022 heroics?

Australia will be without Josh Hazlewood who will be missed while they come into the Ashes with momentum on their side. Australia led by Pat Cummins won the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India on Sunday. Pat Cummins was the leading wicket-taker in the last Ashes as he led the Aussies to a 4-0 success.

On the flip side, England will look to win their first Ashes since 2015, having gone eight years without winning the holy grail. They drew 2-2 in the last home Ashes while not since 2011 has a team won the Ashes away from home.

The second match of the Ashes will be played at Lord’s before the contingent of teams travels to Leeds and Manchester for the third and fourth Test. The Ashes will conclude with the final Test match starting on June 27 at the Oval in London.

Ashes 2023: Ian Chappell blasts organisers after ridiculous schedule, says 'it's a nightmare for all players'

England skipper Ben Stokes has revealed his Playing XI for the opening Test match of the Ashes 2023 as Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad return to the fold for the clash at Edgbaston. The opening contest of the five-match series which will start on Friday, June 16 will also see the return of James Anderson and Ollie Robinson. Mark Wood was the unfortunate star to miss out on the opening match while Ali is in the team for the first time since 2021 when he announced his retirement from the format.

Ali, Broad include for series opener

Ali, 35, will resume his Test career having initially announced his retirement after the Test series against India in 2021. With Jack Leach not available for the opening two Test matches with injury, England Cricket Board (ECB) approached Ali to make a return to the Test fold for the Ashes. Ali has played 64 Test matches for the national side and scalped 195 wickets while also scoring 2914 runs. He is one of the finest all-rounders in the world at the moment and will be a valuable asset in the absence of injured Leach.

On the flip side, it was a tussle between Stuart Broad and Mark Wood on who makes the Playing XI as both Ollie Robinson and James Anderson were set to feature after passing their fitness tests. Broad’s experience comes in as a vital tool and was the highest wicket-taker for England in Australia in the 2021-22 Ashes. While England lost the Ashes 0-4, Broad scalped 13 wickets, more than Anderson.

Anderson chasing milestone

Anderson, who will be 41 by the end of the Ashes could become just the third bowler in the format to scalp 700 wickets if manages to add another 15 to his tally. Currently, with 685 wickets he sits third for most wickets and could go past Shane Warne for most Test wickets if he can add 24 to his tally in the series. This could also be his last Ashes as he nears the twilight of his career.

Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, Jimmy Anderson.

Ashes: Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad picked for Edgbaston opener; Anderson, Robinson also return to face Aussies

England captain Ben Stokes says he wants to be involved in an Ashes series that goes "beyond cricket" as he prepares to face Australia in a five-match series.

The swashbuckling all-rounder has led England to 11 wins from 13 Tests since being appointed captain alongside coach Brendon McCullum last year.

Next week the skipper, who starred in the drawn 2109 Ashes series, will lead his men in the first Test against arch-rivals Australia at Edgbaston.

England have achieved their recent striking success playing an aggressive style of cricket dubbed "Bazball" in reference to McCullum's nickname.

Doubts persist over whether such an approach can succeed against Australia but Stokes is determined to produce a memorable series that can be compared with the 1981 and 2005 Ashes contests, which made all-rounders Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff huge stars.

"I've seen what it's like when you get those moments that really ignite an audience and even create something that goes beyond cricket," Stokes wrote in a column for the Players' Tribune.

"Flintoff in 05, Beefy (Botham) in 81 -- magical events that capture the public imagination and show what cricket can be all about.

"Moments that even people who aren't normally into cricket stick on the telly for because it's so exciting and you feel like you're part of something that you may never get to see again."

Stokes, who has won the 50-over World Cup and Twenty20 World Cup, reiterated his desire for the Test side to play without fear, even though he stressed his hatred of defeat.

"Just because I say it's all right to fail, it doesn't mean I'm fine with losing," he said. "I hate losing.

"But there's a bigger picture. You have to understand that the only way you ever succeed is by having that liberty to really give it a proper go."

The global growth of T20 franchise leagues, which offer players the chance to earn huge sums of money in much less time than when on international duty, has left many fans fearing for the future of five-day Test cricket.

Stokes acknowledged the "landscape is changing" but the 32-year-old said he still believed Test cricket remains the ultimate challenge.

"Cricketers have short careers and I know players are going to make decisions about which route they go down based on financial security for them and their families," he said. "It's natural.

"I really want boards across the world to get their heads around this, which they seem to be having a hard time doing.

"Rather than fight against it, we need to embrace it. Yes, we may lose a few talented players along the way, but the best way to keep Test cricket alive and at the pinnacle of the sport is to work harder to show players something that excites them and inspires them."

Ashes: Ben Stokes expects 'beyond cricket' stuff in upcoming series as England get ready for Aussie battle

England Test team captain Ben Stokes is optimistic about his bowling chances as he prepares for a busy English summer where his side takes on Australia in the Ashes. Stokes, who returned at the midway point of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is suffering from a knee issue and is optimistic about his bowling chances. According to Stokes, he has given himself the best possible chance to bowl when England take on Australia in the Ashes, starting on June 16.

Stokes to bowl?

"The knee is in a much better place than it was in Wellington," Stokes told reporters ahead of Ireland Test.

"I've been over in India for the IPL and these last eight or nine weeks I know I have got myself in a position where I can't say I regret anything.

"I have got myself into a place where I feel like in a 2019, 2020 space in terms of my own body and fitness. I have definitely given myself the best opportunity (to bowl this summer).

"We know what it is (the problem) and now it is about managing it,” the all-rounder added.

The 2019 ODI World Cup winner will lead his side against neighbours Ireland in the only Test starting on Thursday at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. He will be determined to start the new season on a high and continue his unbeaten streak as the captain of the Test side. Stokes is yet to lose a series as the captain of England and has formed a brilliant combination with coach Brendon McCullum, termed as ‘Bazball’ by the English media.

Stokes also reflected on his love for Ashes, where he has incredible memories of having led England to a memorable win against the Aussies in 2019 at Headingley. The Ashes ended all square at 2-2 when the Aussies were last in England.

"It is just the history and what the Ashes is. We're lucky enough as English players and Australian players to be the only ones able to play in it.

"It is one of those series that has got unbelievable history and will continue to capture the imagination of the whole world. We all know what the Ashes means."

England’s bowling concerns

England will have some injury concerns ahead of the Ashes, while Stokes remains optimistic about his bowling chances. Ollie Robinson and James Anderson, both have been ruled out of the Ireland Test, but are hopeful of making it to the Ashes which kickstarts at Edgbaston in Birmingham on June 16. Ashes 2023: Ben Stokes optimistic on bowling against Aussies, says 'given myself the best opportunity'

Uncapped Australian star Jimmy Peirson will join the team contingent for the second Ashes Test in Lord’s with Josh Inglis set to return home on paternity leave. Peirson, who plays for Queensland in the domestic circuit, will serve as a backup option to Alex Carey, who stands as the first choice for the Aussies in the Ashes. The five-match series will start on June 16 at Edgbaston in Birmingham, days after the conclusion of the World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Oval.

Inglis to return home

Inglis, backup to Carey, will return to Australia as his partner will give birth to their first child while the national team will be playing at Lord’s. While he remains a backup option, any last-moment change or concussion substitution could force Pat Cummins’ men to opt for a new wicketkeeper. To avoid any last-moment mix-up, the board named Peirson as a short-term alternative and will only link up for the Lord’s Test with the rest of the squad.

As things stand, Peirson has moved a step closer to the famous Baggy Green cap but is still down the pecking order of the Test squad.

Peirson has featured in 65 First-class matches so far, having scored over 3000 runs at an average of 34.75 including six centuries. Notably, his performance with the bat has witnessed a remarkable rise in the last 30 games since the beginning of the 2020-21 summer, averaging 42.56 with all of his centuries coming during this period.

He even made an unbeaten 128 for Australia A in Sri Lanka last year, in a fourth-innings run-chase of 370 in Hambantota.

Inglis to return home Inglis, backup to Carey, will return to Australia as his partner will give birth to their first child while the national team will be playing at Lord’s. Ashes 2023: Uncapped Jimmy Peirson to replace Josh Inglis in Aussie contingent for Lord’s Test

England cricket team has been handed a timely boost for the upcoming Ashes 2023 after speedster Ollie Robinson was passed fit for the only Test match against Ireland. England are set to play Ireland at the Lord’s in the only Test starting on June 1 with Robinson now key for them as they prepare for the big showdown against the Aussies. The 29-year-old had suffered an ankle issue after day two of Sussex's County Championship match against Glamorgan at Hove last week.

ECB's statement on Robinson

"Scan results have revealed no damage to his left ankle and that Robinson will join up with the England men's Test squad this weekend ahead of the Test match against Ireland starting on Thursday, June 1 at Lord's,” an ECB statement read.

The scan reports showed no big issues for the speedster as he will be an important part of the England side as they bid to win the Ashes for the first time since 2015. Robinson left the field with a sore left ankle and appeared on the final day wearing a protective boot and hobbling about on crutches.

It is worth reminding that, record wicket-taker James Anderson is nursing a minor strain he picked up during the County Championship match while playing for Lancashire. Ben Stokes is also carrying a knee injury and might not be available to play as an all-rounder. Stokes returned from the Indian Premier League (IPL) to recover from the issue that has been troubling him for a while.

Jofra Archer however has been ruled out from the first two matches of the Ashes with a hamstring injury. He is targeting a return to the squad for the remaining three Ashes matches.

Ashes 2023: Ollie Robinson fit to face Ireland before crunch Australia showdown in June

Australian Test vice-captain Steve Smith has hit back at veteran England pacer Stuart Broad after the latter’s comment on the 2021 Ashes where they lost 0-4. Broad, who had earlier described the 2021 Ashes as ‘void’ and had seen his team on the receiving end of a capitulating defeat, is looking forward to making an impression in the upcoming Ashes which begins in Edgbaston in June. Smith, on the flip side, has also started his preparations for the Ashes, having already landed in England.

"I mean, it was a little odd," Steve Smith said.

Smith was seen in excellent touch during his last Ashes visit to England and was one of the star performers of the side. Broad on the flip side did not have a positive tour Down Under in 2021-22 and scalped only 13 wickets, the most by any English bowler. Smith though was not happy with Broad’s comment and looked animated before the start of the Ashes.

"We were all there and playing so it was a little bit odd, you know? He's a nice guy and loves throwing out some good banter so it's all part of it.

"It certainly wasn't an ideal scenario. But the whole world was going through it and we were in the middle of a pandemic, so we couldn't really complain too much.

"We were actually out there being able to do what we love, so I don't really have much more to add to it," Smith said.

The former Australia skipper scored a staggering 744 runs in the Ashes in 2019 and helped his side regain the Ashes after it ended in a stalemate. He only managed to score 244 runs in the previous edition but had happy memories of having led his team to one win in the absence of Pat Cummins.

The latest chapter of the rivalry will kick start on June 19 in Edgbaston England look to regain the Ashes for the first time in eight years. Ben Stokes’ men haven’t tasted a win in the historic series since 2015 but will look to continue their impressive run in the last 12 months.

Ashes 2023: Steve Smith takes a jibe at Stuart Broad's claim of 'void series' after 4-0 humiliation Down Under

Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley moved to allay fears Monday over the remainder of the Ashes series after England were rocked by a Covid scare, but admitted it was a "day-by-day proposition".

Four members of the England camp -- two support staff and two family members -- tested positive for coronavirus just hours before the start of day two in the third Test in Melbourne.

The team and management were required to undergo urgent rapid antigen tests as they were about to leave their hotel for the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

They were given the all-clear barely 45 minutes before play was due to begin.

"The affected individuals are currently isolating," Cricket Australia said, adding that the entire playing group were negative.

"The England cricket team will also have PCR tests today and both teams will take extra precautions throughout play," CA added.

Australian broadcaster the Seven Network also said there had been a positive case among its staff working at the MCG, forcing last-minute changes to their commentary team.

Driven by the Omicron variant, coronavirus cases are surging in Australia -- particularly in Sydney -- where the fourth Test is scheduled in January before the Ashes finale in Hobart.

More than 6,000 cases are being reported daily across New South Wales state, where Sydney is located.

Nevertheless, Hockley said the plan was to press on as scheduled with the Ashes.

"That's absolutely the plan. There's nothing to suggest otherwise. We'll rely on the protocols. It's a day-by-day proposition," he told reporters.

"I can't tell you the amount of work going on behind the scenes. The diligence of our medical team and players, the diligence with which they're working through each of the protocols is extremely impressive.

"They're very calm, they know this is what they need to do."

He added: "We've got very comprehensive testing regimes and the players have been absolutely fantastic. It's ultimately about everyone taking personal responsibility."

England faced a similar scenario earlier this year when the fifth Test of their home series against India was cancelled after multiple cases among the visitors’ support staff.

Australia captain Pat Cummins, who missed the second Ashes Test because he was in Covid isolation, said the dramatic events on Monday were "a sign of the times".

"You've got to be pretty flexible," he told sports broadcaster SEN.

'We'll rely on the protocols': CA wants Ashes to continue despite COVID-19 cases in England camp

Australia declared their first innings on 473-9 and then reduced England to 17-2 after a near-flawless evening session to take charge of the day-night second Ashes test on Friday.

Stand-in skipper Steve Smith fell agonisingly short of his hundred but Alex Carey smashed 51 and lower-order batsmen Michael Neser and Mitchell Starc produced breezy cameos before they declared their innings.

England lost both their openers cheaply before bad weather brought the second day's play to an early close at the Adelaide Oval.

England captain Joe Root was batting on five and Dawid Malan on one with the tourists facing an uphill task to stay alive in the pink-ball contest.

Earlier, England brought out the big guns, Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad, to open the bowling on a hot and overcast day.

Australia began cautiously with Marnus Labuschagne finally clinching his sixth test century after 54 balls in the nervous nineties.

Two balls later, it looked all over as the 27-year-old was caught behind but television footage showed bowler Ollie Robinson`s foot was fractionally over the crease and the batsman, who had been dropped twice during his knock, was recalled.

One run later, however, Robinson had his revenge, trapping Labuschagne lbw for 103 off 305 balls.

Travis Head made 18 before Joe Root bowled him and Ben Stokes claimed his second wicket when he pegged back the off-stump of Cameron Green (two).

Carey got his fifty but Smith, leading the side in the absence of Pat Cummins who missed the test having been a close contact of a positive COVID-19 case, fell lbw to James Anderson after a patient 93.

It was an enthralling post-tea spell, more T20 than test cricket, for the crowd who had sat through a largely slow and predictable two days.

Michael Neser, on his test debut, blasted 35 off 24 balls while Starc remained not out after a run-a-ball 39.

The onslaught meant that England openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed took to the field with a previously-dulled crowd now whipped into a frenzy.

Australia fielded aggressively against both batsmen with four slips and just one player on the boundary.

Burns (four) fell first, to Starc, with Smith taking the catch at second slip.

Neser made it a session to remember by clinching his maiden test wicket, as Hameed (six) was caught by Starc at mid on.

After the Victorian government confirmed that all COVID-19 limitations would be waived, a full capacity crowd is expected for the Boxing Day Test between England and Australia.

After the state met its immunisation objectives, the decision was made. Cricket Australia said in June that tickets for the MCG would be sold to 85 percent of capacity, while all other venues will be sold to full capacity.

With the Victoria government loosening the requirements, more tickets may become available for the traditional Test match, which has drawn some of Australia's largest audiences in recent years.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews also stated that there will be no restrictions on how many people may enter the MCG on Boxing Day. "There are no more caps, there are no more quotients, no more rules in terms of how many people can be in different spaces," Andrews said, according to ESPNcricinfo.

MCG can hold up to 100,000 people at a time. The highest participation so far has been 91,112 in the 2013 Boxing day test. Last time it had around eighty-six thousand people in India vs Australia Women's T20 World Cup, March 2020. Even last year India vs Australia Boxing Day Test was capped at thirty thousand people per day due to COVID-19 restrictions.

"Whether it's 100000 at the MCG on Boxing Day or a smaller group standing up at the public bar of their local pub having a beer, this is the COVID normal that every Victorian has built," he added.

Andrews also assured that if any further changes regarding the Boxing Day Test would be made, fans will get full refunds.

"In the event that capacities are reduced due to government restrictions associated with the pandemic, we of course guarantee fans full refunds."

People who want to enter the MCG for the Boxing Day Test must be fully vaccinated. The five-match Ashes series is set to begin on December 8 at Brisbane's Gabba.

ALSO READ: Ravichandran Ashwin difficult to get away, he has great control over line and length, says Martin Guptill Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews also stated that there will be no restrictions on how many people may enter the MCG on Boxing Day. "In the event that capacities are reduced due to government restrictions associated with the pandemic, we of course guarantee fans full refunds." People who want to enter the MCG for the Boxing Day Test must be fully vaccinated. The five-match Ashes series is set to begin on December 8 at Brisbane's Gabba.

A report in the UK media house suggested that it is still unclear whether families of the England cricketers travelling to Australia will be permitted to stay with them during the Ashes, beginning on December 8.

Former England skippers Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen fumed at the reports. Vaughan went on to say that the Ashes series should be cancelled if families are not allowed to stay with the players for the four-month-long tour of Australia due to strict COVID-19 protocols.

"Read reports today that England cricketers may not be able to have family members with them down under this winter .. Quite simply if they can’t they should call the Ashes off .. 4 months away from your family is totally unacceptable .. #Ashes," Vaughan wrote on his Twitter handle.

Cricket- 'Totally unacceptable': Vaughan, Pietersen fume at Ashes rule

Former Australian legend Steve Waugh lauded England pacer Jofra Archer and said that he reminded him of the West Indies great Curtly Ambrose.

While speaking in a podcast, on ‘Road To The Ashes’ podcast, former Aussie skipper felt that Archer will be a ‘trump card’ for the English team as they face Australia in the Ashes later this year.

“The first time I saw him [Archer] I thought he looked very similar to the first time I saw [West Indies great] Curtly Ambrose, in that he has the ability to lift an extra gear and he can make things happen quickly. ‘So, for me, he really is a trump card for England’s chances in Australia. I think the key player is Jofra Archer,” Waugh spoke on Road To The Ashes podcast.

“He’s something different and will enjoy the pace and bounce of the Australian wickets and is potentially a world-class bowler,” the former Australian captain added.

Waugh went on to discuss the "brittle" batting lineups of both the teams and he reckoned that it entirely depends upon the batters ‘to lay the platform’.

"Both batting orders have been a bit brittle over the last six to 12 months and England – like Australia – need to get 600 runs on the board across both innings and then both teams are capable of bowling the opposition out twice, so it’s really up to the batters to lay the platform," Steve Waugh said.

'Trump card for England’s chances in Australia': Steve Waugh lauds Jofra Archer

England will aim to end an extraordinary season overshadowed by the coronavirus pandemic with a win against Australia as their arch-rivals wait on the fitness of Steve Smith.

Victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday would see 50-over world champions England take the three-match one-day international campaign 2-1.

It would also mean they had not lost a series in any format across 18 matches this summer.

All those fixtures have been played behind closed doors, with England players holed up in bio-secure bubbles in Manchester and Southampton for the best part of three months.

"When you play Australia you always want to win and there is always enough on the line, but it would be really good for us to finish this summer on a high," said England new-ball bowler Chris Woakes, who acknowledged bubble life has had its "tough times".

Australia will hope to have Smith available. The star batsman missed the first two ODIS after being hit on the head during practice last Thursday.

Team management have repeatedly said Smith, felled by a 92 mph bouncer from England fast bowler Jofra Archer during last year's drawn Ashes Test at Lord's, has been rested as a precaution despite passing two concussion tests.

- 'Tracking in the right direction' -

Australia coach Justin Langer, speaking before Smith batted in the nets on Tuesday, said: "He's definitely tracking in the right direction so we're hopeful he'll be right for tomorrow (Wednesday)."

Marcus Stoinis is in line to drop out but Woakes, while wary of the "world-class" Smith, said: "It can be tricky coming in with not much cricket under your belt and having to perform from ball one in a decider."

Australia were poised to win the series without former captain Smith on Sunday. But from 144-2, chasing 232 for victory, their last eight wickets fell for 63 runs in a dramatic collapse.

Defeat meant Australia had squandered winning positions in all three formats against England in just over a year, starting with a remarkable one-wicket loss in an Ashes Test at Headingley before they threw away the opening Twenty20 match of the current tour.

But Langer insisted: "I don't think there's a mental fragility there."

Woakes said the fightback was an indication of England's resolve under captain Eoin Morgan.

"We have that character and belief that we can win from any position," Woakes said. "A few years ago we probably felt we could only win from that position with the bat, whereas now we can do it with the ball as well."

Meanwhile Langer's faith in David Warner was intact despite the Australia opener having been dismissed four times in a row by Archer and managing just 12 runs in his last three innings.

"Jofra Archer is an incredibly talented bowler but, equally, David Warner: what a player," said Langer, himself a former Australia opener.

"When he gets in he scores hundreds in ODI cricket...He is working overtime to be up for the game."

England are looking to preserve an unbeaten run in home ODI series dating back to a defeat by Australia in 2015.

"To have not lost one in that time is a hell of an achievement," said Woakes.

"Of course you want to keep that going but, more importantly, you want to win this series and maintain that record."

England fight back to beat Australia in 2nd ODI

Australia star batsman Steve Smith is set to undergo a fresh concussion test before the second one-day international against England after being ruled out of Friday's opener at Old Trafford in bizarre fashion.

Smith was sidelined from the first of a three-match series after being hit on the head batting in the nets, from a delivery by one of Australia's fast bowlers, but rather a throw-down from a member of the coaching staff.

An Australia team spokesman said Smith was being rested as a precaution despite passing a concussion assessment and would have another such test on Saturday ahead of Sunday's second ODI.

"Steve Smith got a knock on the head yesterday (Thursday) in practice so it's a precautionary measure to leave him out," Australia captain Aaron Finch told Sky Sports at the toss. "(Marcus) Stoinis will bat at three."

Smith was dramatically felled by a 92 mph bouncer from England fast bowler Jofra Archer during last year's drawn second Test at Lord's, paving the way for Marnus Labuschagne to become international cricket's first concussion substitute.

Despite missing the third Test at Headingley, Smith still scored 774 runs, including three hundreds, at an average of over 110 during a five-match series that ended all square at 2-2.

In the 31-year-old former captain Smith's absence, Australia slumped to 123-5 inside 24 overs on Friday after losing the toss.

Stoinis was well caught by diving wicketkeeper Jos Buttler off fast bowler Mark Wood for 43, featuring six fours. Then both Labuschagne (21) and Alex Carey (10) fell to leg-spinner Adil Rashid in what was Australia's first one-day international against England since an eight-wicket defeat by the eventual champions in last year's World Cup semi-final at Edgbaston.

Australia's Smith to have new concussion test ahead of 2nd England ODI

Aaron Finch said that Australia are still searching for their “best formula” in ODI cricket while adding that world champions England are still the benchmarks when it comes to white-ball cricket.

After three-match T20I series, England and Australia will lock horns in an ODI series consisting of three matches starting in Manchester. England won the T20I series 2-1.

The ODI match at Old Trafford will be the first 50-over encounter between the two sides since England defeated the Aussies in 2019 World Cup semi-final and went on to lift the trophy.

Finch said that Australia have made good progress in ODI cricket but emphasized that there is still room for improvement.

"Over the last couple of years we're still searching for our best formula and our best 11 players day in, day out in the one-day format," Finch said in a virtual press conference on Thursday.

"I don't think there's been any secret to that. There's been great opportunity that we probably haven't nailed in this format. We've played some really good cricket in patches and some indifferent cricket in other patches."

Australia are fifth in the global ODI rankings but are the number one side in T20 cricket.

"I think it's just finding a consistent selection formula," he said. "We did a lot of work in the Covid break on how we think we can structure our one-day cricket and where we think we need to get to for that 2023 World Cup.

"It's about getting as much information all the time to give us the best chance of winning consistently. One-day cricket is a hard game, especially away from home."

But he warned England, ranked number one in ODIs, had enviable firepower with bat and ball.

"They keep coming at you," he said. "There's no part in a 20-over game or a 50-over game that you can take your foot off the gas because there will be someone there to take the opportunity away from you."

"I think their form in white-ball cricket has been exceptional in both formats over the last few years," he added. "Obviously their one-day game has probably been the benchmark since probably 2016 so it's going to be a great challenge."

IN PICS | IPL 2020: Updated squad list of all the franchises; retained and bought players "I don't think there's been any secret to that. There's been great opportunity that we probably haven't nailed in this format. We've played some really good cricket in patches and some indifferent cricket in other patches." Australia are fifth in the global ODI rankings but are the number one side in T20 cricket. "I think it's just finding a consistent selection formula," he said. "We did a lot of work in the Covid break on how we think we can structure our one-day cricket and where we think we need to get to for that 2023 World Cup. "It's about getting as much information all the time to give us the best chance of winning consistently. One-day cricket is a hard game, especially away from home." "I think their form in white-ball cricket has been exceptional in both formats over the last few years," he added. "Obviously their one-day game has probably been the benchmark since probably 2016 so it's going to be a great challenge." (From AFP inputs)

While the details of the limited-overs series hasn’t been finalised yet, Australia have announced a 26-man preliminary squad for the series with the likes of Usman Khawaja, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head being the most notable returnees in the squad.

Australia are slated to play England in September which would mark the return of the Kangaroos in the international circuit after a prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The performances in the Big Bash Leagie (BBL) haven’t gone unnoticed as well with the likes of Josh Philippe and Daniel Sams included in the preliminary squad. However, there was no place for the likes of Peter Handscomb, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Shaun Marsh in the 26-man squad.
