It was “the world's first recorded magnitude 9 earthquake.” It is marked as the sixth most severe earthquake in global history, along with the 2010 earthquake in Biobío, Chile, and the 1906 earthquake in Esmeraldas, Ecuador, along with a massive 9.1 magnitude undersea earthquake near Sumatra. Following the tsunami warning in the coastal regions of Russia, Japan, and the US, officials reported that the population of around 2,000 people was evacuated. In addition, several people were injured in Russia by the quake, but none seriously, according to state media Zvezda. Around 1.9 million people have been also asked to evacuate in Japan, and authorities urged residents to reach higher ground over a possible tsunami.

After a severe earthquake in Russia on Wednesday (July 30) triggered tsunami warnings across the coastal regions of the US and Japan, you might be wondering about the world's deadliest tsunamis. Let's have a look at the top 10 deadliest tsunamis in the last 500 years.

An earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck off Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday (July 30, 2025), causing tsunamis up to four metres (12 feet) high across the Pacific. The earthquake unleashed powerful tsunami waves that threatened sparsely populated areas across the Pacific, sparking evacuations from Hawaii to Japan. The quake has caused tsunamis to rise to four metres (12 feet). However, the full extent of the damage from the Kamchatka earthquake and tsunami has not been ascertained. This earthquake is the largest since 2004, when one of magnitude 9.1 near Indonesia's Sumatra Island triggered an Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed around 220,000 people in 11 nations. But do you know the top deadliest tsunamis in the last 500 years, which have claimed several lives and devastated several infrastructures? Here is the list of the top 10 deadliest tsunamis.

Scientists have revealed that an underground phenomenon in Oman changed the direction of India millions of years ago. Our country could have ended up in an altogether different place if it weren't for a "ghost" plume discovered under Oman. A magma plume is caught thick portion of Earth's crust and the upper part of the mantle under the Salma Plateau. The age of this plateau and the plume revealed how India landed where it is today. The plume is trapped and cannot trigger volcanic activity. However, a study has found that the pressure created by this plume shifted the trajectory of the Indian tectonic plate after it collided with Eurasia tens of millions of years ago. Oman's Salma Plateau is up to 6,600 feet high. Lead author of the study, Simone Pilia, a geophysicist and assistant professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia, told Live Science that this plateau likely formed because of the ghost plume. Although some scientists also attribute it to the bending of Earth's crust created by the Makran subduction zone off the coasts of Pakistan and Iran. This plume presented itself during seismic studies, when the sound waves that travel through the Earth at different speeds were captured by several stations in Oman. The data revealed the plume was alive under the Salma plateau. However, the one in Oman is trapped in continental plates - it can neither rise nor undergo decompression melting because these plates have a thicker crust and upper mantle. Pilai says that just because there are no volcanic eruptions, it doesn't mean there are no plumes under continental plates. There are no volcanic eruptions, but they can still result in changes in the topography of a region. They should hide under strong structures to protect themselves."Drop under a table; cover your head with one hand and hold the table till the tremors last. Run outside as soon as the tremors stop - do not use the lift," it said."When outside, move away from buildings, trees, walls, and poles. Look for open spaces. When inside a vehicle, pull over in an open area and remain inside; avoid bridges," it added.

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 4.5 jolted the coast of the Tokara Islands, Japan, at around 11 am (2:00 am GMT) on Tuesday. The tremor registered a level 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 at Kusekijima Island, part of Toshima Village in Kagoshima Prefecture. However, the quake posed no tsunami threat and originated at a depth of approximately 30 kilometres, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. In addition, Kodakarajima Island, also part of the village, along with Amami in Kagoshima, recorded a lower intensity of 2.Similarly, another earthquake took place near the Tokara Islands at 12:02 pm on Monday, with Akusekijima once again registering an intensity of 4. The depth and magnitude were consistent, around 30 kilometres and 4.5, respectively, according to a report in the Japan News.Additionally, Akusekijima was rocked by two more tremors overnight. The first, at 12:08 am, measured 4, followed by a slightly stronger quake at 12:12 am, which registered a lower 5 on the intensity scale.
Continuous quakes in several southern islands of Japan
For the past few days, the southern Islands in Japan have been experiencing continuous tremors. The islands, such as Tokara and Akuseki, have been experiencing seismic activities since 21 June following a magnitude 5.5 earthquake that struck last week, officials said.According to a report on the BBC, Tokara Island reported no major damage. In addition, no tsunami warning was issued, but authorities have advised residents to prepare to evacuate if required. As per Channel News Asia, no major physical damage was also reported from the hardest-hit Akuseki island, which was hit by a 5.1-magnitude quake overnight. Similarly, an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 jolted Nepal on Sunday (June 29), the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said in a statement. The earthquake took place at a shallow depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks. On April 26 this year, a minute of silence was held in remembrance of the 8,969 lives lost during the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck on April 25, 2015, nearly a decade ago.On Saturday (July 5), a quake with a magnitude of 5.3 also shook islands in southwestern Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake struck off the Tokara island chain at 6:29 a.m. at a depth of about 20 kilometres, reported the local media. No tsunami warning was issued.
Nepal is part of subduction zone
Nepal is susceptible to continuous earthquakes as this region lies on the convergent boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Indian plate is slowly and gradually sliding beneath the Eurasian plate which is known as subduction, creating immense pressure and strain on the crust of the region. The subduction zone intensifies tectonic pressure, placing Nepal at significant risk of earthquakes. This tectonic collision is also responsible for the rise of the Himalayan mountains, contributing to the region’s frequent seismic activity. Nepal has a long record of major earthquakes, including the catastrophic 2015 quake.

A warning has been issued that an undersea volcano might erupt in the coming days in the Andaman Sea. Renowned marine ecologist Thon Thamrongnawasawat elaborated in a Facebook post on Thursday about the frequent seismic activity in the region. Concerns have been growing that this could be a sign that a volcano under the ocean is getting ready to explode. There have been earthquakes in Myanmar in recent days. Thon explained that tremors here are unlikely to generate a tsunami, which is caused by undersea earthquakes or volcanic explosions. “Tsunamis in the Gulf of Thailand are highly unlikely, and even if they occur, they would be small and detected well in advance due to the distance from major seismic and volcanic zones like Indonesia and the Philippines,” he wrote. Scientists are planning on using a new technology to study the Cascadia fault off the Pacific Northwest, which has the potential to trigger an earthquake of magnitude 9 and above. The region has witnessed a mammoth quake in the past. The last time this region shook aggressively was in 1700, and a "big one" is overdue, scientists say. The Cascadia Subduction Zone stretches from Northern California to southern British Columbia. It is located only about 112-160 kilometres offshore, and so an earthquake of 9 and above would not only cause devastation on land, but also trigger a tsunami with waves so high that huge swathes of land would be submerged.
Japan earthquake and tsunami study
A study published in Science has revealed that the Nankai Trough, a subduction zone where the Philippine Sea Plate is being pushed beneath Japan, is experiencing slow-slip earthquakes. These are subtle seismic movements near the fault which gradually cut the ground, with the strain rupturing only a few millimetres per day. They used advanced borehole observatories to record the tremors that would otherwise go undetected. The technology was used to drill hundreds of feet into the seabed and gather real-time data on the fault and what was happening underneath. Since the Nankai Trough is important when it comes to learning about the quakes and tsunami risks in Japan, the borehole observatories have thrown up valuable information that can be used to prepare for any adversity. Further details on Sunday’s quake are awaited as officials monitor the region for aftershocks and potential infrastructure impact.
Pakistan's propensity for earthquakes
Pakistan lies in one of the world's most seismically active regions, straddling the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan are situated atop complex fault lines, making them particularly vulnerable to destructive earthquakes. As per ANI, Balochistan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan provinces lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate on the Iranian Plateau. Meanwhile, Sindh, Punjab, and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir provinces lie on the northwestern edge of the Indian Plate in South Asia. The collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates frequently causes powerful seismic events in the area.

As per reports, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property, though authorities are continuing to assess the situation.

Iran was hit by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake late Friday (June 21), sending tremors through the region. According to the reports, the earthquake hit the area near Iran’s Semnan at 5:49 local time, with the depth recorded at 10 km.This comes amid Israel and Iran engaging in a deadly war as Israel on June 13 launched Operation Rising Lion, with an aim to target Iran’s nuclear facilities, top military officials and nuclear scientists.According to Iranian local media, no casualties were reported and the damage was minimal, which triggered concerns over nuclear testing. As war between the two nations escalated, the earthquake’s proximity raised concerns for speculation over possible nuclear activity. Moreover, the quake’s timing as well as its proximity to Semnan reflects more chances of a possible nuclear testing, as it is a site known for its missile and aerospace infrastructure, raising concerns on social media after the quake.
Iran’s seismologic history
Seismologically, Iran is highly active due to its position on the Alpine-Himalayan seismic belt. Hence, it is prone to earthquakes.Iran has witnessed over 2000 earthquakes annually, including 15 to 16 of magnitude 5.0 or higher. Moreover, according to an analysis, 96000 earthquakes jolted Iran between 2006 and 2015.According to experts and reports, nuclear activities, particularly underground nuclear explosions, can induce earthquakes by releasing tectonic stress near the blast. These explosions are typically much smaller in magnitude than the explosion itself and are limited to a range of a few tens of kilometres from the blast site according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).Earlier on June 17, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck near Borazjan in Bushehr province, followed by another 4.2 magnitude quake near Kashmar in Razavi Khorasan just a day later. These events highlight the constant seismic risk faced by the region and the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone areas like Iran.
