US President Donald Trump on Saturday (Sep 20) warned the Taliban of unspecified consequences if the Afghan government refuses to hand back Bagram Airfield to the United States. In a post on Truth Social, Trump warned that unless Afghanistan give the Bagram Airbase "back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!!". This was not the first time Trump has mentioned taking back the air base; he first floated the idea during his recent state visit to the United Kingdom.

Why does the Bagram air base matter?
Bagram, once the largest US military base in Afghanistan, served as a hub for American and NATO operations for two decades. US and allied forces withdrew from the site in July 2021 as part of a broader pullout that preceded the Taliban's rapid takeover of the country. Human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have previously criticised practices at Bagram during America's so-called "War on Terror", particularly the alleged harsh treatment of detainees. At a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier this week, Trump said he was working to regain control of the facility. Lamenting the loss of the airbase and noting its proximity to China, Trump said, "We're trying to get it back, by the way, that could be a little breaking news. We're trying to get it back because they need things from us".Also read | Trump slams US media, calls negative coverage 'illegal' after Jimmy Kimmel show suspension stirs free speech debate
Will the US take back the Bagram air base forcefully?
Back in Washington on Saturday, Trump was asked by reporters whether the administration was considering a military operation to retake the base. Trump declined to be specific. "We won't talk about that, but we're talking now to Afghanistan, and we want it back and we want it back soon, right away. And if they don't do it, you're going out find out what I'm going to do," he said. Also read | Trump just made it nearly impossible for Indians to work in the US — Here's howThe president has frequently criticised the 2021 withdrawal and has linked the loss of Bagram to broader concerns about strategic competition in the region, including China's growing influence in Afghanistan. Trump warns Taliban: Hand back Bagram airbase or 'BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN'

President Donald Trump’s latest move on immigration has set off alarm bells in the global tech community, particularly in India, which supplies the majority of H-1B visa holders in the United States. On September 19, 2025 Trump signed a proclamation requiring a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions filed from outside the United States, a dramatic change in how future applications will be handled. At first, the announcement generated panic. Would current H-1B holders be locked out of the US? Would renewals suddenly cost six figures? The White House has since clarified key details, which WION now lays out in full.
The rule
The proclamation, “Restriction on Entry of Certain Alien Nonimmigrant Workers,” states that petitions for H-1B workers outside the U.S. must include a $100,000 payment or risk denial. The rule takes effect at 12:01 am EDT on September 21, 2025.
White House response
Taylor Rogers, White House spokeswoman, tells WION: “President Trump promised to put American workers first, and this commonsense action does just that by discouraging companies from spamming the system and driving down wages. It also gives certainty to American businesses who actually want to bring high-skilled workers to our great country but have been trampled on by abuses of the system.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted a clarification on X, writing that: “This is NOT an annual fee. It’s a one-time fee that applies only to the petition.” “Those who already hold H-1B visas and are currently outside of the country right now will NOT be charged $100,000 to re-enter.” “H-1B visa holders can leave and re-enter the country as they normally would. Whatever ability they have to do that is not impacted.” “This applies only to new visas, not renewals, and not current visa holders. It will first apply in the next upcoming lottery cycle. Also read | Can Trump’s $1M ‘Gold Card’ buy you US citizenship? That makes this policy especially significant for IT companies and professionals who depend on the visa pathway. Meanwhile, US employers seeking niche skills may benefit from less crowded lotteries, improving their odds of securing talent.
Legal questions
Immigration experts are already debating whether the president has the authority to impose such a fee without congressional approval. Normally, visa fees are set by law or regulation, not presidential proclamation. Lawsuits could argue that the move violates the Administrative Procedure Act. Courts may examine whether the fee is effectively a tax that only Congress can authorise. However, until challenged in court, the rule remains in force.
The political context
For Trump, this is both policy and politics. He can argue that he is protecting American workers from foreign competition, delivering on a campaign promise to reform the H-1B system, and demonstrating toughness on immigration in the run-up to new domestic and international negotiations. For critics, it may be another example of executive overreach that could undermine America’s leadership in technology and innovation.
What comes next

USCIS Guidance: Agencies are expected to release instructions on how the $100,000 payment must be submitted.

Upcoming Lottery Cycle: The first real test will be the FY2027 filings in early 2026.

Business Decisions: US and Indian firms will need to decide whether to absorb the new cost or change their hiring strategies.

Court Battles: Legal challenges could delay or overturn the policy.

Conclusion
The $100,000 fee marks one of the most sweeping changes to the H-1B program in decades. By targeting new applications, the Trump administration is signalling that the era of mass low-cost filings is over. For American companies, the question is whether the higher price tag will still allow them access to the skills they need.

Did Ilhan Omar marry her brother to get US citizenship? Here's the truth behind Trump's bold claim

US President Donald Trump on Friday (Sep 19) announced a massive hike in the annual fee for H-1B visas, raising it to a whopping $100,000. Even as he introduced the shocking fee hike, Trump also announced that "Trump Gold Card is here". What is a Gold Card? Can it help you get a US citizenship, and therefore bypass H-1B visas? Here's all you need to know.
What is a Trump Gold Card?
Simply put, it is a new immigration pathway for the rich. The 'Trump Gold Card' is a visa meant for foreigners of "extraordinary ability", such as entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders who are committed to supporting the United States of America. The visa comes with a massive $1 million fee and will grant the holder the right to live and work across all 50 US states. On Truth Social, Trump announced the move, saying, "For far too long, we have had millions of Illegal Aliens pouring into our Country, and our Immigration System was broken. It is beyond time that the American People, and American Taxpayers, are benefiting from our LEGAL Immigration System."
How will it benefit the US?
The Trump Gold Card, as per the POTUS, is expected to "generate well over $100 Billion Dollars very quickly". This money, he said, would be "used for reducing Taxes, Pro Growth Projects, and paying down our Debt."Trump Platinum CardAlong with the Gold Card, Trump also announced a more exclusive 'Trump Platinum Card', that carries a $5 million fee, which, as per reports, will allow individuals to spend up to 270 days in the US annually without being taxed on American income. It would be available on a first-come-first-served basis and like the Trump Gold Card, would be subject to approvals. For corporations, Trump also announced the Corporate Gold Card, priced at $2 million, with added processing and maintenance charges.
'Gold cards,' a new paid way to get US citizenship?
Not really. Previously, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick revealed that the Gold Cards would replace the government's immigrant investor visa programme, adding that applicants would "have to go through vetting" to prove they are “wonderful world-class global citizens”. Currently, the EB-5 immigrant investor visa programme is the route through which foreign investors pump money into US projects that create jobs and then apply for visas to immigrate to the US. Currently, the programme issues green cards to immigrants who invest at least $1,050,000, or $800,000 in economically distressed zones called targeted employment areas, to create jobs for American workers.

US President Donald Trump on Friday (Sep 19) railed against American news outlets, accusing them of distorting stories and calling their negative coverage of him "illegal." See, I think it's really illegal, personally." The 79-year-old Republican, who has sued several major media companies this year, also repeated his long-standing claim that coverage of him was "97 per cent bad." Earlier in the day, Trump, on his way back from a trip to Britain, condemned evening shows on network television, saying, “all they do is hit Trump.”
Trump defends Brendan Carr
Trump also defended Federal Communications Commission (FCC) member Brendan Carr, who this week threatened TV broadcasters after late-night host Jimmy Kimmel joked about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC responded by suspending Kimmel's show indefinitely, a move that has fuelled an intense debate over free speech and government overreach. Now, Trump has labelled Carr "an incredible American patriot with courage". “He loves our country, and he's a tough guy,” the POTUS said about Carr, who threatened the licenses of ABC affiliates that broadcast Jimmy Kimmel's show. Also read | Trump just made it nearly impossible for Indians to work in the US — Here's how Not all Republicans were comfortable with Carr's warning. US President Donald Trump on Friday (Sep 19) railed against American news outlets, accusing them of distorting stories and calling their negative coverage of him "illegal." The Republican president's statement has stoked a debate over free speech in the US, especially given the recent suspension of comedian Jimmy Kimmel's TV show by ABC for a statement over the assassination of MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk. Here's what Trump said in his latest controversial statement. See, I think it's really illegal, personally." The 79-year-old Republican, who has sued several major media companies this year, also repeated his long-standing claim that coverage of him was "97 per cent bad." Earlier in the day, Trump, on his way back from a trip to Britain, condemned evening shows on network television, saying, “all they do is hit Trump.” Trump defends Brendan Carr Trump also defended Federal Communications Commission (FCC) member Brendan Carr, who this week threatened TV broadcasters after late-night host Jimmy Kimmel joked about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Trump Imposes $100K H-1B Fee, Indian Tech Workers Likely Most Affected

US President Donald Trump on Friday (Sep 19) signed a proclamation hiking the annual fee for H-1B visas to $100,000, a move that could deal a major blow to Indian tech workers and the firms that hire them. For Indians, this massive visa fee hike translates to a whopping ₹90 lakh. Through the H-1B program, American companies bring in highly skilled foreign workers, most of them from countries like India. However, now, for every visa application, employers will have to cough up $100,000 a year on top of existing filing fees and salaries.
How many Indians will be affected?
According to Pew Research, India remains the top beneficiary of the H-1B visa programme. In 2023, Indians accounted for roughly three-quarters (around 73 per cent) of the total H-1B visa applicants. This translates to hundreds of thousands of Indians every year. The impact of Trump's proclamation hiking the annual fee for H-1B visas was immediate on markets. Shares of Cognizant dropped nearly 5 per cent, while US-listed Indian IT majors Infosys and Wipro fell between 2 per cent and 5 per cent. Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, which collectively secured tens of thousands of H-1B approvals this year, are also likely to face higher costs. Also read | Trump says US blasted 3rd boat with drugs ‘en route to poison Americans’. Late-night comedy hosts took jabs at US President Donald Trump a day after Jimmy Kimmel’s show was suspended following his comments about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. ABC pulled the plug on Kimmel’s show on Wednesday following his remarks on Monday and Tuesday’s episodes about Kirk’s assassination. In a show of solidarity, several late-night comedy hosts like Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Stewart took to their own shows to react to the move, mocking the US President, who had celebrated the suspension.
‘How dare you, sir!’
Jon Stewart returned to The Daily Show and claimed that the program was ‘government-approved’. He referred to Trump as ‘Our Great Father’ and ‘Dear Leader’ and even joked about Trump’s recent visit to the United Kingdom. Stewart played a clip of a reporter’s question about Kimmel and whether free speech was under attack in America. “How dare you, sir! How dare you, sir!” Stewart bellowed. “What outfit are you with, sir, the Antifa-Herald Tribune?”

"That is blatant censorship, and it always starts small," Colbert said, and he referred to the administration's effort to rename the Gulf of Mexico. "And if ABC thinks this is going to satisfy the regime, they are woefully naive." Colbert’s show was cancelled as the channel cited financial reasons. However, most felt Trump had a role to play as Colbert was well known for openly criticizing the President.
Jimmy Fallon reacts
On NBC, host Jimmy Fallon cracked a couple of jokes on Thursday's episode of The Tonight Show and then became serious for a moment.

On Tuesday (September 16), President Donald Trump announced that the deadline for TikTok's potential ban in the United States would be extended again, this time until December 2025. He also said that a deal had been reached between the US and China over TikTok, with an ‘American buyer’ set to be revealed soon. The US has long insisted that TikTok's ownership should be transferred to an American company due to concerns over national security. Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned that Trump was prepared to “let TikTok go dark” while finalising the agreement. Speaking to reporters ahead of his trip to the UK, Trump confirmed that the deal was in place, adding that he would speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday, September 19, to finalize the details. "We have a deal on TikTok, I’ve reached an agreement with China, and I’ll be speaking to President Xi on Friday (September 19) to confirm everything," Trump told the press. This announcement came just one day after Bessent confirmed that a "framework" agreement had been established following two days of discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Madrid. Bessent noted that the Wednesday (September 17), deadline for the TikTok shutdown had prompted the Chinese government to work toward a resolution, with a potential 90-day extension to finalise the deal. If this happens, it would mark the third time the deadline has been pushed back, extending the total delay to 270 days. While Bessent did not offer further details about the talks, he emphasized that the final agreement would maintain the “Chinese characteristics” of TikTok while addressing US concerns about national security. He also reiterated that Trump was prepared to allow the app to go offline if necessary during the negotiations. This marks the second time this year that both sides have claimed to be on the verge of a deal, following a previous attempt in March that ultimately fell through.

The scale of force is quite similar to Trump’s 2019 visit, when more than 6,000 police officers were deployed at a cost of £3.4 million ($46,46,593). Officials have set up a “ring of steel” around the Windsor town, including road closures, barriers, police dogs, mounted patrols, and strict airspace restrictions. Drones and the National Police Air Service are also being used to monitor the area.
South Korean President warns of ‘discouraging investment’
The South Korean authorities have alleged abuses during the raid and have said they will “thoroughly investigate any potential human rights violations or other issues”. According to reports, the ignorant ICE agents used racial slurs, “Rocket Man” against detainees, thinking them to be North Korean. According to reports from South Korean media Yonhap, when the detainees asked the agents what they had done wrong, the agents responded that they didn't know. They were chained up with metal chains at the waist and hand for nine hours while the raid was going on in the $4.3 billion factory jointly owned by the South Korean companies LG Energy Solution and Hyundai Motor Group. During the detention, they were not provided any basic supplies for days and had mouldy beds, inedible food, and no blankets. There were no windows or clocks, and it was very cold. Also Read: Kohinoor's long-lost sister Daria-i-noor diamond to reappear in Bangladesh in a 117-year-old vaultIt took nearly four days for all of them to be processed. Detainees also said that they were forced by officials from the Korean consulate to sign a voluntary departure form, which termed them as illegal aliens.
