US-Iran War: Trump Says US May Escort Oil Tankers Through Strait of Hormuz

As American forces press ahead with bombing missions inside Iran, US President Donald Trump finds himself directing a conflict that contrasts sharply with years of his own public warnings about US intervention abroad. Long before entering the White House, Trump repeatedly accused then-President Barack Obama of preparing to ignite a confrontation with Tehran for political advantage. He argued that such a move would needlessly cost American lives and serve electoral interests rather than national security. In January 2012, speaking on Sean Hannity’s radio program, Trump said of Obama: “I say that he starts a war in Iran before the election, which will make it very hard for the Republican to win. He’ll start a war, you know, lives will be wasted for no reason.”&nbsp;Hannity responded at the time by calling the idea of bombing Iran “the most chilling abuse of power, is what you’re describing, in American history.” “Yeah, I think it’s going to happen,” Trump replied. “There’ll be some kind of a war started. Instead of working it out, which you can do very easily. And not from weakness, hey look, you know, it’s called be a tough negotiator. You have a lot of strength. But you know, rather than doing that, I predict that he will start some kind of a war/skirmish or conflict.”&nbsp; There was no public evidence then that the Obama administration was planning military action against Iran, and no such war took place during his presidency. Still, Trump returned to the claim throughout 2011 and 2012. In April 2012, he told Fox host Jeannine Pirro: “I think that he would do it. I do believe he will do it, whether he does it under the guise of Israel or not, but I do believe he would do it.”&nbsp; In a 2011 video blog later deleted, Trump declared: “Our president will start a war with Iran because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate. He’s weak, and he’s ineffective. So the only way he figures that he’s going to get reelected, as sure as you’re sitting there, is to start a war with Iran.” Speaking on “The Laura Ingraham Show” in April 2012, he again predicted conflict: “I happen to think that the president is going to start a war with Iran. I think it’ll be a short-term popular thing to do. And I think he’s going to do that for political reasons.”&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/gulf-countries-could-exhaust-air-defences-within-days-amid-relentless-iranian-missile-barrage-1772566477387">Gulf countries could exhaust air defences within days amid relentless Iranian missile barrage</a>&nbsp;More than a decade later, Trump is presiding over an expanding military campaign against Iran, the most significant foreign conflict of his presidency. US President Donald Trump said the US-Israel strikes on Iran have knocked out nearly all targets and are going well, as he met with German Chancellor Merz on Tuesday

U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Democratic leaders for their response to the ongoing Iran conflict, saying they oppose him “whatever I do” and are politicising issues of national security. Trump’s comments come as Democrats in Congress label recent strikes on Iran as “illegal” and push for votes to restrict his war powers, arguing that only lawmakers can authorise military action.

At the same time, Israeli troops moved into southern Lebanon as Hezbollah fired missiles at northern Israel. President Donald Trump said U.S. strikes destroyed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps command facilities, marking a dramatic regional escalation.

United States Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Monday (March 2) that the administration would not engage in the “foolish” exercise of telegraphing “what we will or will not do.” Since Saturday afternoon (India time), US-Israel forces have launched ballistic missiles, including Tomahawks from warships in the Persian Gulf, and conducted air strikes using F-22 'Raptor' and F-35 stealth fighters. President Donald Trump claimed the U.S. “destroyed” key command centers tied to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), sharply escalating tensions. Trump warned Tehran against retaliation, saying any response would be met with overwhelming force. The statement raises concerns over regional stability, possible military escalation, and the future of U.S.–Iran relations.

US President Donald Trump in an interview with CNN on Monday (March 2) said that the US military is heavily striking Iran, but warned that a “big wave” of attacks is yet to come. “We’re knocking the crap out of them,” Trump told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “I think it’s going very well. He also confirmed that three US service members had been killed and added that there would likely be more casualties, vowing to avenge the deaths of Americans. “As one nation, we grieve for the true American patriots who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, even as we continue the righteous mission for which they gave their lives,” Trump said, adding: “And sadly, there will likely be more before it ends.” Also read: Israel launches 'large-scale strikes' on Iran after 5 people injured in Jerusalem. Details inside The American president went on and justified his attacks on Iran, saying “an Iranian regime armed with long-range missiles and nuclear weapons would be a dire threat to every American… I once again urge the Revolutionary Guard, the Iranian military police, to lay down your arms and receive full immunity or face certain death.” This came after the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer allowed the US to use UK military bases to launch attacks that degrade Iran’s missiles. Starmer released a recorded video and said that the “only way to stop the threat is to destroy the missiles at source in their storage depots or the launchers which are used to fire the missiles”. “The US has requested permission to use British bases for that specific and limited defensive purpose,” he said. “We have taken the decision to accept this request – to prevent Iran firing missiles across the region … killing innocent civilians … putting British lives at risk … and hitting countries that have not been involved," the British PM added.

US President Donald Trump said combat operations against Iran will continue “in full force” until all American objectives are achieved, confirming three US service members were killed and warning more casualties could follow.

Attacks on Iran will ‘continue until all of our objectives are achieved’: Trump issues fresh warning

US President Donald Trump has taken one of the boldest risks of his presidency, launching a sweeping US air assault on Iran with limited groundwork laid at home for the consequences of a potentially prolonged Middle East conflict. If reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei prove accurate, the strike could trigger a historic turning point. The removal of the Islamic Republic’s most powerful figure may open the door to the collapse of a regime long accused of brutally suppressing dissent, including crackdowns that left thousands dead during protests in recent months.&nbsp;“This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social after backing Israeli reports that Khamenei, whom he called “one of the most evil people in history”, was killed in an airstrike. Iran’s Foreign Ministry had earlier insisted that Khamenei was safe. The potential death of Khamenei, successor to Ruhollah Khomeini, architect of the 1979 revolution, would represent a political earthquake inside Iran. It could fracture the authority of the clerical establishment that transformed the country into a theocratic state governed by hardline Islamists.&nbsp;Yet the central question remains unresolved: would eliminating senior leadership spark genuine reform, or unleash chaos that tightens repression and destabilizes the country further? Trump told NBC that the attacks had “inflicted tremendous damage.” “At some point they’ll be calling me to ask who I’d like (as leader),” Trump said, adding, “I’m only being a little sarcastic when I say that.”&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="'Bloodthirsty despot': After Trump, Iran's exiled prince Reza Pahlavi claims 'Khamenei erased' — Will he return?">'Bloodthirsty despot': After Trump, Iran's exiled prince Reza Pahlavi claims 'Khamenei erased' — Will he return?</a><h2>A familiar gamble, a new opening</h2>US efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions are not new. Israel has named its latest operation against Iran “Lion’s Roar,” a title chosen personally by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The decision came after the Israel Defense Forces confirmed it carried out what it described as preemptive strikes on Iran, triggering explosions in Tehran and prompting a nationwide emergency. Netanyahu opted instead for a name that carries clearer symbolism and a reference to the June 2025 strikes against Iran. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani showed up at the White House on Thursday (Feb 26) with a carefully chosen gift for President Donald Trump. The offering, which was clearly designed to appeal to Trump’s ego, came with an appeal: for the POTUS to intervene in the case of Ellie Aghayeva, a Columbia University student who had been detained earlier by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. So, what was the gift? Did it work? All you need to know. What did Mamdani give Trump? Zohran Mamdani gave Donald Trump a mocked-up New York Daily News front page praising Trump’s support for housing in the city. The graphic featured a stoic photo of the president with the headline, “Trump to City: Let’s Build.” Also read | Pakistan declares 'open war' against Afghanistan Taliban, says 'patience reached its limit' Alongside it, Mamdani presented a very different piece of history. The original 1975 Daily News cover that once declared “Ford to City: Drop Dead.” By all accounts, it worked. The president appeared to take to it immediately. A picture shared by Mamdani on X shows Trump grinning from ear to ear while showing off the two newspapers.

Donald Trump is reportedly preparing for a major power grab, as a report suggests that activists and the White House are working on an executive order to declare a "national emergency" over America's election. The Washington Post reported that "a 17-page draft executive order" is being circulated among officials, which alleges that "China interfered in the 2020 elections", and this is being used as a basis to declare a national emergency. If this happens, it would "unlock extraordinary presidential power over voting," The Post reported. Trump could ban mail-in ballots and certain voting machines in the November midterms. “President Donald Trump has repeatedly previewed a plan to mandate voter ID and ban mail ballots in November’s midterm elections, and the activists expect their draft will figure into Trump’s promised executive order on the issue," WaPo wrote.&nbsp;&nbsp;Peter Ticktin, a Trump supporter and in favour of the executive order, told the Post that the "president is aware that there are foreign interests that are interfering in our election processes," and "that causes a national emergency". He added, "Under the Constitution, it’s the legislatures and states that really control how a state conducts its elections, and the president doesn’t have any power to do that."Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/did-trump-announce-a-third-term-run-in-his-2026-state-of-the-union-address-here-s-the-truth-1771992729165">Did Trump announce a 'third term' in his 2026 State of the Union address? The United States could be staring at a national emergency, according to a draft executive order. Trump could take the step over claims that foreign countries are interfering in the country's elections. This will give him the power to ban mail ballots and some voting machines.

The drama over US president Donald Trump's joke about getting impeached if US women's ice hockey team isn't invited to the White House continues to spill. Senior advisers in the United States administration are reportedly pushing for Israel to strike Iran first if military action becomes necessary, believing this could help build domestic support for a broader campaign. The discussions come amid rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes and ahead of critical talks in Geneva, as Washington balances diplomacy with pressure and military preparedness.

Iran-US War: Trump Urging Israel Strike Iran First

U.S. and Iranian officials are holding a pivotal third round of indirect nuclear talks in Geneva as tensions soar and the threat of military action looms large. The discussions come amid the largest U.S. military buildup in West Asia in years, including the deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and advanced jets to the region. Iran insists it wants a peaceful resolution, with its foreign minister saying a deal is within reach if diplomacy is prioritised, while Washington pushes back against Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and missile program. Adding a new geopolitical twist, a Chinese commercial intelligence firm, MizarVision, has been publishing detailed satellite imagery tracking U.S. military deployments near Iran.
