The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents who raided Donald Trump’s Florida house, Mar-a-Lago, were searching for classified documents on nuclear weapons, The Washington Post reported citing people familiar with the investigation.

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday said that he personally authorised the raid after seeking permission for a search warrant but did not discuss the investigation in great detail.

The Post, quoting officials, didn’t provide further details of the specific information sought by the agents in the raid. They also did not disclose whether the documents were related to weapons from the US or some other country.

They also refused to answer if such documents were recovered as part of the search. But they expressed apprehension that such documents said to be possessed by Trump have the potential to fall into the wrong hands.

But the people closely involved in the raid told The New York Times that the documents were so sensitive and important to national security that the Justice Department had no choice but to try and retrieve them.

The FBI is being increasingly attacked by Conservative politicians seeking an explanation from the Justice Department on what warranted the search.

In a late-night post on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump said that he would "not oppose the release of documents," adding, "I am going a step further by ENCOURAGING the immediate release of those documents."

FBI searched for classified nuclear documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home: Report

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has condemned the threats made to the law enforcement in the wake of raids on former US president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.

In a statement on Thursday, the FBI noted that its special agents "put their lives on the line every day to protect the public”.

The statement came hours after Trump and Conservative leaders slammed the FBI as a "corrupt" and "politicised" agency following the Monday raid, in which agents reportedly were searching for classified documents that Trump had retained in violation of rules on official records.

That was followed by a surge of violent threats against the FBI and Justice Department on social media and in conservative chat rooms, AFP reported.

"The threats made recently contribute to an atmosphere where some have, or will, accept violence against law enforcement as appropriate. It is not. Special Agents and their families should never be threatened with violence, including for doing their jobs," the association said.

The FBI has been at the receiving end of the Conservative leaders since the raid, who described it as a state of “civil war”.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz dubbed the FBI "an attack dog” to help the Democrats while Republican Congressman Paul Gosar in a tweet said that "we must destroy the FBI."

Another fervent Trump supporter, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, attacked the agency and spoke of "civil war."

"The FBI has gone rogue and is doing the dirty work of a communist regime," she said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, an armed man was shot on early morning when he tried to breach the FBI headquarters office in the US state of Ohio&nbsp;

"Upon the activation of an alarm and a response by armed FBI special agents, the subject fled," the FBI said in a statement.

Biden administration ends Trump’s ‘Remain in Mexico policy’ on migrants

Former US President Donald Trump&nbsp;has said that he declined to answer questions while appearing under oath in a New York state attorney general's civil probe into alleged fraud at his family business. "I declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution," Trump said in a statement.&nbsp;“I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’ Now I know the answer to that question,” the statement said.

Informing about the raid, Trump released a statement and said, "These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents. Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before."

Trump also complained that the FBI officers had broken into his safe.&nbsp;The Republican leader, who aspires to run again in the 2024 presidential elections further added:

Donald Trump and his family bid farewell to Ivana at funeral in New York

The US National Archives has asked the Secret Service, the agency that is responsible for the protection of the president, to conduct an internal probe over “the potential unauthorised deletion” of agency text messages sent and received during the last year’s Jan 6 attack on the US Capitol.

In a statement on Tuesday, the National Archives said that the Secret Service has been informed under federal law that it has to submit the probe report within 30 days with a detailed explain nation as to why the agency deleted the relevant text messages, reports Politico.

It comes days after the Department of Homeland Security inspector general, the watchdog for the Secret Service, informed Congress at a Jan 6 hearing that he was told that the texts were no longer in existence when he asked them to submit a copy of it.

“This report must include a complete description of the records affected…a statement of the exact circumstances surrounding the deletion of messages [and] all agency actions taken to salvage, retrieve, or reconstruct the records,” the National Archives said.

Acknowledging the National Archives’ order, the Secret Service spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, in a statement responded that the agency “respects and supports the important role of the National Archives and Records Administration in ensuring the preservation of government records. They will have our full cooperation in this review.”

The Secret Service maintains that data on some phones were lost as part of a pre-planned “system migration” in January 2021.

In an interview to AP news agency earlier, the Secret Service said that “the insinuation that the Secret Service maliciously deleted text messages following a request is false.”

It comes days after the Department of Homeland Security inspector general, the watchdog for the Secret Service, informed Congress at a Jan 6 hearing that he was told that the texts were no longer in existence when he asked them to submit a copy of it. “This report must include a complete description of the records affected…a statement of the exact circumstances surrounding the deletion of messages [and] all agency actions taken to salvage, retrieve, or reconstruct the records,” the National Archives said. Acknowledging the National Archives’ order, the Secret Service spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, in a statement responded that the agency “respects and supports the important role of the National Archives and Records Administration in ensuring the preservation of government records. They will have our full cooperation in this review.” The Secret Service maintains that data on some phones were lost as part of a pre-planned “system migration” in January 2021.
