Pentagon fires Greenland base commander over criticism of VP JD Vance’s visit

Denmark and Greenland have jointly reaffirmed their territorial sovereignty, sending a strong message amid renewed tensions over past U.S. remarks about Greenland. As leaders mark strategic territory in Arctic waters, unity between Copenhagen and Nuuk is on full display.

Denmark and Greenland reassert sovereignty amid US tensions

Denmark has responded sharply to US Vice President JD Vance after he accused Copenhagen of neglecting Greenland. His comments, made during a visit to the Pituffik Space Base in north-west Greenland, were seen by both Denmark and Greenland&rsquo;s capital Nuuk as provocative.
<h2>What did JD Vance say?</h2>
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Vance stated, &ldquo;Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass.&rdquo;

&ldquo;I think Greenland understands that the United States should own it. And if Denmark and the EU don&rsquo;t understand it, we have to explain it to them. We need Greenland. Very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland,&rdquo; Vance said.
When asked about whether force might be used, Vance replied that he didn&rsquo;t think it would be necessary. &ldquo;We think this makes sense, and because we think the people of Greenland are rational and good, we think we&rsquo;re going to be able to cut a deal, Donald Trump-style, to ensure the security of this territory but also the United States of America.&rdquo;
<h2>How did Denmark react?</h2>
Danish Foreign Minister Lars L&oslash;kke Rasmussen took to social media on Saturday to voice his disapproval. &ldquo;We are open to criticisms, but let me be completely honest, we do not appreciate the tone in which it&rsquo;s being delivered,&rdquo; he wrote on X.

&ldquo;This is not how you speak to your close allies, and I still consider Denmark and the United States to be close allies,&rdquo; he added.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland&rsquo;s incoming prime minister, urged solidarity. &ldquo;It is very important that we put aside our disagreements and differences &hellip; because only in this way will we be able to cope with the heavy pressure we are exposed to from outside,&rdquo; he said.
Denmark&rsquo;s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also responded to Vance&rsquo;s statements. &ldquo;For many years, we have stood by the Americans in very difficult situations,&rdquo; she said, referencing Denmark&rsquo;s military involvement alongside the US in Iraq and Afghanistan. &ldquo;The vice president&rsquo;s reference to Denmark is not accurate,&rdquo; she added.

Officials from both Denmark and Greenland, with the backing of the European Union, have made it clear that the US will not gain control of the territory. Prime Minister Frederiksen recently accused Washington of placing &ldquo;unacceptable pressure&rdquo; on both Denmark and Greenland, saying, &ldquo;It is pressure that we will resist.&rdquo;
President Donald Trump and his administration have insisted Greenland is crucial to US security interests. Trump has not ruled out the use of force to secure the island, while Vance doubled down on the position during the visit.
Greenland, which was once a Danish colony, is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Foreign affairs and defence remain under Copenhagen&rsquo;s control.
Vance visited Greenland with his wife Usha and a group of officials, including National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Utah Senator Mike Lee, and Julia Nesheiwat, Waltz&rsquo;s wife and former homeland security adviser.
The Pituffik base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, plays a key role in the US missile defence system. Its Arctic location puts it in the path of any potential missile launches from Russia, and it also serves as a vital hub for air and submarine surveillance.

Despite the desire for full independence shared by all of Greenland&rsquo;s political parties, none support the idea of becoming an American territory.
Just before Vance&rsquo;s visit, political leaders in Greenland formed a four-party coalition government to demonstrate unity. The agreement, signed by four of the five main parties, opens with a clear message, &ldquo;Greenland belongs to us.&rdquo;

World: Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen took to social media on Saturday to voice his disapproval. “We are open to criticisms, but let me be completely honest, we do not appreciate the tone in which it’s being delivered,” he wrote on X.

Denmark has responded sharply to US Vice President JD Vance after he accused Copenhagen of neglecting Greenland. His comments, made during a visit to the Pituffik Space Base in north-west Greenland, were seen by both Denmark and Greenland’s capital Nuuk as provocative. What did JD Vance say? Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Vance stated, “Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass.” Also read: ‘You failed to keep it safe’: JD Vance blasts Denmark during first US vice-presidential visit to Greenland “I think Greenland understands that the United States should own it. And if Denmark and the EU don’t understand it, we have to explain it to them. We need Greenland. Very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland,” Vance said. When asked about whether force might be used, Vance replied that he didn’t think it would be necessary. “We think this makes sense, and because we think the people of Greenland are rational and good, we think we’re going to be able to cut a deal, Donald Trump-style, to ensure the security of this territory but also the United States of America.” How did Denmark react? Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland’s incoming prime minister, urged solidarity. “It is very important that we put aside our disagreements and differences … because only in this way will we be able to cope with the heavy pressure we are exposed to from outside,” he said. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also responded to Vance’s statements. “For many years, we have stood by the Americans in very difficult situations,” she said, referencing Denmark’s military involvement alongside the US in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The vice president’s reference to Denmark is not accurate,” she added. Prime Minister Frederiksen recently accused Washington of placing “unacceptable pressure” on both Denmark and Greenland, saying, “It is pressure that we will resist.” President Donald Trump and his administration have insisted Greenland is crucial to US security interests. Trump has not ruled out the use of force to secure the island, while Vance doubled down on the position during the visit. Greenland, which was once a Danish colony, is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Foreign affairs and defence remain under Copenhagen’s control. Vance visited Greenland with his wife Usha and a group of officials, including National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Utah Senator Mike Lee, and Julia Nesheiwat, Waltz’s wife and former homeland security adviser. 'This is not how you speak': Denmark slams JD Vance after US VP says US should ‘own’ Greenland

US Vice President JD Vance paid a visit on Friday (28 March) to the Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland, making him the first American vice president to travel to the Danish territory. He was joined by his wife, Usha, and senior US officials.
Vance opened his address by thanking the troops for giving him a "warm reception in a very, very cold place." He said he carried a message from President Donald Trump, who is "thankful for your service" and "proud of you."

Referring to the strategic importance of the base, Vance said, &ldquo;If, God forbid, to my fellow Americans, if a missile was fired from an enemy country or an enemy submarine into the United States, it is the people here before us, who would give notice to our brave men and women further south... to let people know what was coming, and God willing to try to shoot it down and prepare for it.&rdquo;
He raised concerns about growing interest from Russia and China in the Arctic region, saying, &ldquo;The US needs to lead in the Arctic&nbsp;because we know that if America doesn&rsquo;t, other nations will fill the gap.&rdquo;
<h2>Vance blasts Denmark for neglecting Greenland</h2>
Turning his attention to Denmark, Vance directly criticised the country for what he described as neglect over the past two decades. He said that Greenland had been &ldquo;less important&rdquo; to allies who had &ldquo;not kept up as China and Russia have taken greater and greater interest.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We know that too often our allies in Europe have not kept pace. They haven&rsquo;t kept pace with military spending,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;And Denmark has not kept pace in devoting the resources necessary to keep this base, to keep our troops, and in my view, to keep the people of Greenland safe from a lot of very aggressive incursions from Russia, from China and from other nations,&rdquo; he added.
Vance claimed there had been &ldquo;underinvestment in the infrastructure&rdquo; of Greenland and criticised Denmark&rsquo;s response to earlier warnings. &ldquo;There was a lot of criticism from Denmark&rdquo; for saying &ldquo;the obvious, which is that Denmark has not done a good job at keeping Greenland safe,&rdquo; he said.
Although he recognised Denmark&rsquo;s contributions during the &ldquo;war on terror&rdquo;, he insisted the focus should now be on what lies ahead.
He added, &ldquo;There is no amount of bullying, no amount of obfuscating, no amount of confusing the issue. Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have under invested in the people of Greenland, and you have under invested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass filled with incredible people. That has to change, and because it hasn&rsquo;t changed, this is why President Trump&rsquo;s policy in Greenland is what it is.&rdquo;

‘You failed to keep it safe’: JD Vance blasts Denmark during first US vice-presidential visit to Greenland

US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, are expected to arrive in Greenland on Friday (March 28) for a significantly pulled-back visit, following backlash over the original plans. The initial itinerary triggered a diplomatic stir between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland.
The American delegation includes White House National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and Republican Senator Mike Lee from Utah.
<h2>'We would rather not have Vance in Greenland'</h2>
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s safe to say we would rather not have him [Vance] in Greenland,&rdquo; a source from the Danish government told The Guardian.

The visit began as what was described as a personal trip by Usha Vance. She had planned to attend cultural events in Greenland&rsquo;s capital, Nuuk, including a dog-sledding race, and spend time with her son. However, the scale of the security arrangements quickly suggested the trip was more than just a private tour.
Protests were anticipated, and the people of Greenland expressed unease which stemmed from President Donald Trump&rsquo;s remarks about wanting to acquire Greenland, which he considers vital for American national security.
The announcement that National Security Advisor Waltz would join the group only added to the controversy.

Greenland&rsquo;s acting Prime Minister, M&uacute;te B Egede, criticised the visit, calling it a &ldquo;provocation&rdquo; and a &ldquo;demonstration of power&rdquo;. He urged the global community to pay attention.
&ldquo;Just for the record, the government of Greenland has not extended any invitations for any visits, neither private nor official,&rdquo; Egede said.

Originally, the second lady&rsquo;s tour included stops in Nuuk and Sisimiut, with plans to attend the annual dog race. Security vehicles, including bulletproof cars, had already arrived in Greenland in preparation.
However, after statements from Greenland&rsquo;s leadership and Prime Minister Frederiksen, the US scaled back the plans. The updated schedule now features just one stop, Pituffik Space Base, a remote American military installation in Greenland.

In Sisimiut, the mayor declined to organise a meeting with Mrs Vance, citing the upcoming local elections. Locals were also preparing a silent protest, planning to turn their backs on the American visitors.
Within two days of the trip&rsquo;s announcement, the cultural events were cancelled. Instead, the focus shifted solely to the military base visit and Vice-President Vance himself was added to the trip. Although Waltz had briefly been removed from the official list, his name was later reinstated.
<h2>'Leaders in US, Denmark ignored Greenland for far too long'</h2>
Speaking ahead of the visit, JD Vance said, &ldquo;Leaders in both America and in Denmark, I think, ignored Greenland for far too long. That&rsquo;s been bad for Greenland. It&rsquo;s also been bad for the security of the entire world. We think we can take things in a different direction.&rdquo;
Vance is now the most senior American official to ever visit Greenland. While Denmark appears relieved by the trimmed-down nature of the trip, his presence still stresses the Trump administration&rsquo;s growing focus on the island.
President Trump has continued to express interest in acquiring Greenland, recently saying that the United States will &ldquo;go as far as we have to go&rdquo; to pursue that goal.

‘Cold reception’ awaits JD Vance, wife Usha in Greenland as scaled-back trip draws global attention: What to know

United States&rsquo; NATO allies, including Canada, Denmark, Germany, Finland and the United Kingdom, have issued fresh travel advisories for their citizens amid US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s immigration crackdown.
Some travel warnings also noted that the US State Department has suspended its policy that allowed transgender, intersex and nonbinary individuals to update their sex field on their passports.

Ottawa has issued travel advisories for citizens staying in the US for over 30 days, warning them to register or face penalties. However, Trump has made the registrations compulsory amid the rising tension between the two nations over tariffs and immigration.
&ldquo;Canadians and other foreign nationals visiting the United States for periods longer than 30 days must be registered with the United States Government. Failure to comply with the registration requirement could result in penalties, fines, and misdemeanour prosecution,&rdquo; the advisory read.

After European nations, Canada warns citizens travelling to US amid Trump's immigration crackdown

Denmark and Finland have updated their travel advisory for transgender individuals heading to the United States, joining several other European nations that have issued similar warnings in recent weeks following reports of troubling experiences at the US border.
Denmark has advised transgender travellers to contact the US embassy in Copenhagen before setting off, to make sure their travel documents will not cause issues.

<h2>'US will recognise only two genders'</h2>
The update follows recent moves by Donald Trump, who has focused on reversing protections for transgender and non-binary people. He has declared that the US will recognise only two genders and has signed executive orders aimed at banning transgender people from the military, restricting their participation in sports, and limiting access to gender-transition care for those under 19.

<h2>Denmark, Finland, and Germany warn transgender travellers </h2>
Although the Danish foreign ministry did not refer to Trump by name, it pointed out that the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) application only allows people to select "male" or "female" for gender. Danish law, on the other hand, allows citizens to choose &ldquo;X&rdquo; as a gender marker.
&ldquo;If your passport has the gender designation X or you have changed gender, it is recommended to contact the US embassy prior to travel for guidance on how to proceed,&rdquo; Denmark&rsquo;s updated travel advisory now states.

Authorities noted that no Danish nationals have been denied entry or held at the US border since Trump&rsquo;s return to office. However, LGBT+ Danmark, a national advocacy group, had asked for a change in guidance.
&ldquo;We are worried that people could be stopped at the airport and refused entry, or that something inappropriate and uncomfortable could happen at the airport,&rdquo; said LGBT+ Danmark spokesperson Susanne Branner Jespersen told local broadcaster.
Germany had already updated its own travel advice earlier this month, warning that those with the gender "X" on their passports or whose gender identity has changed should consult US diplomatic offices before departure.
Finland followed shortly after, updating its travel page to warn that &ldquo;if the applicant&rsquo;s current sex on their passport is different from their sex confirmed at birth, the US authorities may refuse entry.&rdquo;
Several other European countries have also changed their language around US entry requirements.

‘X’ gender? Don’t risk it: Denmark, Finland join list of nations warning transgender tourists heading to US

Greenland heads to the polls on Tuesday in what is being called the most significant election in the Arctic island&rsquo;s history. While issues such as education, healthcare, and independence remain central to the debate, one factor that has drawn international attention is US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s determination to acquire Greenland &ldquo;one way or the other&rdquo;.
Denmark, which ruled Greenland as a colony until 1953 and still oversees its foreign and security policy, is watching closely, concerned about the potential loss of a key part of its kingdom.

Even before his second term began in January, Trump had revived his earlier ambitions, making it clear that he would not hesitate to take military action or impose tariffs if Denmark refused to cooperate. This has intensified global interest in Greenland&rsquo;s elections.
<h2>Who are the two big contenders in the Greenland polls?</h2>
The election is mainly contested between two major political alliances, the coalition led by Greenland&rsquo;s Prime Minister M&uacute;te Egede of Inuit Ataqatigiit, a democratic socialist and pro-independence party, and the opposition party Naleraq, which has been gaining ground with its strong push for independence and openness to US collaboration.

Political analysts say the race is too close to call. Naleraq&rsquo;s rising popularity signals a shift in Greenland&rsquo;s political mood, with some voters seeing Trump&rsquo;s interest as an opportunity to negotiate better terms with Denmark or even accelerate Greenland&rsquo;s path to independence.
Security concerns have also come into play, with politicians now requiring protection while campaigning, something unprecedented in Greenland&rsquo;s elections. This political tension includes growing public anger revelations of the alleged mistreatment of Greenlanders by Denmark.

<h2>Every vote counts</h2>
With a small voting population of around 40,000, out of a total of 57,000 residents, every vote counts. While Trump&rsquo;s comments triggered a crisis in Copenhagen, Greenlanders largely reacted with a mix of curiosity and optimism, thinking that the situation could be used to their advantage in negotiations.
&ldquo;This election is where everyday politics collides with geopolitical questions over Trump,&rdquo; said Rasmus Leander Nielsen, head of Nasiffik, the University of Greenland&rsquo;s Centre for Foreign and Security Policy, told The Guardian.

World: Even before his second term began in January, Trump had revived his earlier ambitions, making it clear that he would not hesitate to take military action or impose tariffs if Denmark refused to cooperate.

Greenland heads to the polls on Tuesday in what is being called the most significant election in the Arctic island’s history. While issues such as education, healthcare, and independence remain central to the debate, one factor that has drawn international attention is US President Donald Trump’s determination to acquire Greenland “one way or the other”. Denmark, which ruled Greenland as a colony until 1953 and still oversees its foreign and security policy, is watching closely, concerned about the potential loss of a key part of its kingdom. ‘Highly unpredictable’: How Trump’s obsession made Greenland’s election the most important in its history

Denmark's defence committee's chair on Sunday (March 1) said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would "run naked through New York City" if that will get him security guarantees and save his country.
Rasmus Jarlov, chair of the Danish parliament Folketing&rsquo;s defence committee, stressed in an interview to Sky News how Ukraine and Europe can get back into talks with US President Donald Trump.
"I&rsquo;m pretty sure that President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/zelensky" rel="dofollow">Zelensky</a> would be willing to run naked through New York City if that was required of him to get security, security guarantees and save his country," Jarlov said.

He stressed that it cannot be about emotions and personal egos.&nbsp;
"It is about who's humble enough and who said thank you enough. It must be about what is right and just and what is in the interest of the Western world," he said.&nbsp;
<h2>'US has been misled'</h2>
Denmark defence committee's chair further said that the US administration &ldquo;has been misled by a false narrative that Zelensky is a bad guy who is trying to exploit the US and that Europe are bad guys &hellip; and they want to show they are fed up with that.&rdquo;
He warned that any peace deal without security guarantees for Ukraine is not even worth the value of the paper that it's written on as &ldquo;Russian leaders regularly break their promises, break their treaties, break agreements.&rdquo;

"It seems that Russia already thinks that they&rsquo;re at war with the West... If you think that way, then you&rsquo;re going to attack again. And they will attack the Baltic countries, probably as the first target," he stressed.
<h2>EU countries 'not doing their part'</h2>
Jarlov called out some EU countries for not paying enough in their defence spending for Ukraine and "not doing their part".&nbsp;
"There is no comparison between the economies of Europe and Russia. It&rsquo;s like 15 times bigger. So if Europe stands up and helps Ukraine, there will only be one outcome, and that will be a Ukrainian victory," he said.
Jarlov added that if "we are hesitant like we have been so far", then the Americans are going to stop helping because they think it&rsquo;s too expensive, and then Ukraine will lose, and that "will be a very, very bad outcome for Europe."
Currently, the European leaders are holding a crucial defence summit in London, hosted by UK PM Keir Starmer.
Jarlov stressed that the EU leaders have to "stop talking, stop tweeting" and have to "start paying and they have to send the arms to Ukraine right now."

France has discussed with Denmark sending troops to Greenland in response to United States President Donald Trump's repeated threats to annex the Danish territory. Watch this report for more details.

France floated sending troops to Greenland

US President&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> reportedly reiterated his demand to take control of Greenland during his first phone conversation after resuming office with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
The 45-minute call, held last week, turned into a heated exchange when Frederiksen told Trump that Greenland was not for sale, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Trump allegedly threatened Denmark with tariffs if it refused to give up control of the island, which is an autonomous Danish territory. Frederiksen tried to offer closer military and economic cooperation between the US and Greenland, including access to mineral resources, but Trump reportedly dismissed the proposal, insisting on full US control.
&ldquo;It was horrendous,&rdquo; one source familiar with the call told Financial Times. Another source said, &ldquo;He was very firm. Before, it was hard to take it seriously. But now, it seems serious and potentially very dangerous.&rdquo;
A former Danish official told the Financial Times that the conversation was &ldquo;very tough,&rdquo; adding that Trump specifically mentioned possible tariffs targeting Denmark.
&ldquo;The intent was very clear. They want it. The Danes are now in crisis mode,&rdquo; one official briefed on the call told FT. Another European official said, &ldquo;The Danes are utterly freaked out by this.&rdquo;
Trump first floated the idea of buying Greenland during his initial term as president and revived the proposal before his inauguration. He posted on his social media platform Truth Social that American control of the territory is essential for US national security.

Earlier Greenland government had said that it is open to higher defence and trade cooperation with the US, but it has remained firm on retaining its autonomy. The island, with a population of approximately 57,000, hosts a US military base.
Greenland Prime Minister, Mute Egede, welcomed US investment in mining and tourism but said that decisions about Greenland&rsquo;s future lie with its people. &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t want to be Danes. We don&rsquo;t want to be Americans. Of course, we want to be Greenlanders,&rdquo; Egede said.

Meanwhile, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/european-union" rel="dofollow">European Union</a> has also shown interest in placing its troops on Greenland. Robert Brieger, the chairman of the European Union Military Committee, suggested that EU forces could join US troops already stationed on the island. In an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Brieger said, &ldquo;In my view, it would make perfect sense not only to station US forces in Greenland, as has been the case to date, but also to consider stationing EU soldiers there in the future.&rdquo;

Donald Trump's 'horrendous' phone call with Danish PM over Greenland triggers 'crisis mode'

Denmark has reportedly reached out to US President-elect Donald Trump&rsquo;s team, expressing a willingness to strengthen security in Greenland or increase the US military presence there, while making it clear that the island is not for sale.
According to Axios, which cited two sources, Denmark&rsquo;s private messages aimed to address US security concerns without compromising Greenland's sovereignty.

President-elect Trump, who will assume office on January 20, has previously described US control of Greenland as an "absolute necessity" for national security.
He has also hinted at using military or economic measures, including tariffs, against Denmark to further US interests. However, the Danish government has sought to reassure Trump that his concerns can be met without the need to claim the island.
In their communication with Trump&rsquo;s team, Denmark said that while Greenland would remain off the market, they were open to discussing any other requests from the US regarding the island, the sources told Axios.

Denmark offers Trump a ‘third way’ on Greenland, says open to increased US military presence

Greenland may become independent if its residents want, but is unlikely to become a U.S. state, Denmark's foreign minister said on Wednesday after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump refused to rule out force to take control of the Arctic island.
Greenland's leader met with the Danish king in Copenhagen on Wednesday, a day after Trump's remarks thrust the fate of the mineral-rich and strategically important island, which is under Danish rule, to the top of world headlines.
Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, said on Tuesday he would not rule out using military or economic action to make Greenland part of the United States. The same day, Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., made a private visit to Greenland.

Greenland, part of NATO through the membership of Denmark, has strategic significance for the U.S. military and for its ballistic missile early-warning system since the shortest route from Europe to North America runs via the Arctic island.
The president-elect has indicated he would pursue a more combative foreign policy that disregards traditional diplomatic formalities.
Greenland, the world's biggest island, has been part of Denmark for 600 years although its 57,000 people now govern their own domestic affairs. The island's government led by Prime Minister Mute Egede aims for eventual independence.

"We fully recognise that Greenland has its own ambitions. If they materialise, Greenland will become independent, though hardly with an ambition to become a federal state in the United States," Danish foreign minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said.
He told reporters the United States' heightened security concerns in the Arctic were legitimate following increased Russian and Chinese activity in the region.
"I don't think that we're in a foreign policy crisis," he said. "We are open to a dialogue with the Americans on how we can possibly cooperate even more closely than we do to ensure that the American ambitions are fulfilled."

Still, although Denmark itself played down the seriousness of Trump's threat to its territory, the returning president's openly stated ambition to expand U.S. borders has jolted European allies less than two weeks before he takes office.
France's foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, said Europe would not let other nations attack its sovereign borders, although he did not believe the U.S. would invade.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed surprise at Trump's comments about Greenland and Canada, underlining that European partners unanimously uphold the inviolability of borders.
<h2>Strained relations</h2>
Greenland's relations with Denmark have lately been strained by allegations of mistreatment of Greenlanders. Egede has said the island is not for sale, while in his New Year speech he stepped up his push for independence. Denmark says the territory's fate can be decided only by Greenlanders.
Greenland's Finance Minister Erik Jensen repeated that Greenland is not for sale. "Our wish is to become independent one day. But our ambition is not to go from being governed by one country to another."
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Tuesday she could not imagine Trump's ambitions would lead to U.S. military intervention in Greenland. Denmark's military capabilities there are limited to four inspection vessels, a Challenger surveillance plane and dog sled patrols.
Responding to Trump's threat of tariffs against Denmark, which according to analysts at Danske Bank could potentially be "quite harmful to Danish companies, Frederiksen said she did not think a trade war with the United States was a good way forward.
Denmark is home to Novo Nordisk, Europe's most valuable company, which makes weight-loss drug Wegovy that has become hugely popular in the United States, the Nordic country's biggest trading partner.
The Danish royal palace gave no details of King Frederik's meeting with Greenland's Egede.
While many Greenlanders dream of independence from Denmark, the king remains popular on the island, having spent extended periods there, including a four-month expedition on the ice sheet. Last month, the royal court modified its coat of arms, enlarging a polar bear that symbolises Greenland.
"He's popular in Greenland. So he can clearly be helpful to the Danish-Greenlandic relationship," Damien Degeorges, a Reykjavik-based consultant specialising in Greenland, told Reuters.
Trump already raised the issue of the U.S. taking over Greenland during his first presidency, but his latest remarks still left many Danes baffled.
"I find it extremely ridiculous," said Jeppe Finne Sorenson, a data engineer in the Danish capital. "We have an alliance, we're allies. So this doesn't really respect that."

So this doesn't really respect that." Denmark says Greenland can be 'independent' but not part of United States

Denmark has announced a significant increase in its defence spending for Greenland, coinciding with US President-elect Donald Trump’s renewed remarks about purchasing the Arctic territory.

Anti-whaling activist Paul Watson was on Tuesday released from detention after Denmark refused a Japanese extradition request over a 2010 clash with whalers.
Watson had been held in Greenland since July on a 2012 Japanese warrant accusing him of causing damage to a whaling ship and injuring a whaler.
"It's been five months and this is the first day of freedom, so I'm feeling great," Watson told AFP in a video call shortly after his release from the Danish autonomous territory.
"My arrest has focused international attention on Japan's continuing illegal whaling operations and their intent to go back to the Southern Ocean," the 74-year-old said. "So, in fact, these five months have been an extension of the campaign."
He added that his detention had also highlighted Denmark's "illegal killing of dolphins and whales in the Faroe Islands",
Watson, who featured in the reality TV series "Whale Wars", founded Sea Shepherd and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation (CPWF) and is known for radical tactics including confrontations with whaling ships at sea.

Jean Tamalet, one of Watson's lawyers, told AFP that "the fight is not over."
"We will now have to challenge the red notice and the Japanese arrest warrant, to ensure that Captain Paul Watson can once again travel the world in complete peace of mind, and never experience a similar episode again," Tamalet said.
Watson also lamented being on the Interpol Red Notice list, saying it "is for serial killers, war criminals, and major drug traffickers."
<h2>Ready for the worst </h2>
Lamya Essemlali, head of Sea Shepherd France, told AFP that she "still can't believe it."
Speaking alongside Watson following his release, said she "was ready for the worst, getting ready to fight, even to get him out of Japan if we had to."
According to documents viewed by AFP, Denmark's decision was based on the duration of Watson's detention following his arrest and the time it would take to carry out a possible extradition.
The ministry also considered "the fact that the acts for which extradition is sought are more than 14 years ago and the nature of the acts in general."
Contacted by AFP, Japanese foreign ministry officials in charge of the issue were not immediately available for comment.
Tokyo accuses Watson of injuring a Japanese crew member with a stink bomb intended to disrupt the whalers' activities during a Sea Shepherd clash with the Shonan Maru 2 vessel in 2010.
Watson's lawyers have said they have video footage proving the crew member was not on deck when the stink bomb was thrown.
"Japan tried to silence a man whose only crime was to denounce the illegality of the industrial massacre disguised as scientific research," one of his lawyers, Francois Zimeray, told AFP.
Watson would not get a fair trial in Japan, where "there is a presumption of guilt," he told AFP. "Prosecutors are proud to announce that they have a 99.6 per cent conviction rate."
<h2>Not a comment on Japan </h2>
In September, Watson's lawyers contacted the UN special rapporteur on environmental defenders, claiming that he could be "subjected to inhumane treatment" in Japanese prisons.

Danish Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard stressed that the decision was based on the specifics of the case and "does not mean that Denmark shares the concerns that have been raised in certain circles about the Japanese legal system."
"Japan is a democratic state that respects fundamental human rights. There has also been a good and close dialogue with the Japanese authorities," Hummelgaard said.
In a rare public comment on the case, Japan's Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya has said that the extradition request was "an issue of law enforcement at sea rather than a whaling issue".
Watson wants to return to France, where he has been living since July 2023 and where his two young children attend school. He requested French citizenship in October.
Watson's legal woes have attracted support from the public and activists, including prominent British conservationist Jane Goodall, who has urged French President Emmanuel Macron to grant him political asylum.

A new study conducted in Denmark has linked infertility to different types of pollution among men and women. While air pollution is associated with increased infertility risk in men, noise pollution leads to a higher risk of infertility in women.&nbsp;

The study, published in the BMJ,&nbsp;drew from a&nbsp;database of 526,056 men and 377,850 women aged 30 to 45 who had less than two children, were cohabiting or married&nbsp;and had lived in the Nordic country between 2000 and 2017. The study did not include sterilised men and women who had undergone surgery to prevent pregnancy.&nbsp;

The study stated that men exposed to air pollution over an average of five years had a higher risk of infertility, which further adds to evidence about the impact of fine particulate matter on human health.&nbsp;

“Based on a nationwide cohort, designed to include a high proportion of people actively trying to achieve pregnancy, we found that PM2.5 was associated with a higher risk of an infertility diagnosis among men,"&nbsp;the study noted.&nbsp;

As for infertility among women aged 35 to 45, noise pollution was the leading cause of infertility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Road traffic noise was associated with a higher risk of an infertility diagnosis among women older than 35 years, and possibly among men older than 37 years," the study added.&nbsp;

During the 18-year period, infertility was diagnosed in&nbsp;16,172 men and 22,672 women. Exposure to levels of PM2.5 that were 2.9 micrograms per cubic metre higher than average over five years was associated with a 24 per cent&nbsp;increased risk of infertility.&nbsp;

“As many western countries are facing declining birthrates and increasing maternal age at the birth of a first child, knowledge on environmental pollutants affecting fertility is crucial," the study stated.&nbsp;

"If our results are confirmed in future studies, it suggests that political implementation of air pollution and noise mitigations may be important tools for improving birthrates in the western world.”
