Archaeologists have discovered a sunken Viking ship in Denmark that is the biggest one ever seen. The vessel is nearly 92 feet long and is dated to be 600 years old. Researchers say that it is in extremely good condition, and one of the best examples of a cog, or a “super ship”, Popular Science reported. The cogs changed how trade happened in medieval Europe because of their advanced design and carrying capacity. Otto Uldum, who led the expedition, said in a statement, "The find is a milestone for maritime archaeology." He added that the discovery of the boat offers an opportunity to understand how such ships were constructed and what life was like for the sailors and merchants on board. The Viking ship is one of the many such vessels built for trade during the Middle Ages. It has been named Svælget 2, after the channel in which it was found. Scientists now also know for sure that a ship could also be this big, and that "the ship type could be pushed to this extreme", a researcher said.
Sand and silt preserved the Viking ship
Svælget 2 has remained protected in the sea because of the silt and sand that accumulated on it. The ship that sank centuries ago was buried under a rubble of 40 feet, which helped it stay preserved in the harsh underwater environment. It even contains evidence of its rigging because of this safety mound on top of it. "It is extraordinary to have so many parts of the rigging. We have never seen this before, and it gives us a real opportunity to say something entirely new about how cogs were equipped for sailing," Uldum said. To know when the ship was built, archaeologists analysed tree rings in its timber, which revealed that Viking artisans constructed the cog in the Netherlands around 1410 CE.Also Read: Creature that has chomped down on its DNA by half is evolving in reverseAlso Read: Scientists just found 'deep-sea oasis' in an Arctic region thought to be barren
How rigging data will reveal more about the Viking ships
These ships were huge, yet they had small crews. The data on rigging will help shed light on how a handful of people operated the large cogs. "Rigging is absolutely central to a medieval ship, as it makes it possible to control the sail, secure the mast and keep the cargo safe. Without ropes and rigging, the ship would be nothing," Uldum added. The discovery of this ship also confirms certain details about cogs. For example, some Viking cogs featured tall wooden platforms at both the bow and stern known as castles, as seen in the sunken ship. Notably, these features had only been known about through depictions, and no clear archaeological evidence had ever been found. “We have plenty of drawings of castles, but they have never been found because usually only the bottom of the ship survives,” said Uldum. “This time we have the archaeological proof.”

A Viking ship has been discovered in an extremely well-preserved condition in Denmark. This ship, also known as a cog, is 600 years old and went down centuries ago. The enormous size of the ship shows that a vessel could be pushed to such limits.

Denmark has announced plans to ban social media use for children under 15, aiming to protect young users’ mental health and well-being. Platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube would be restricted under the proposal, expected to come into effect by mid-2026.

Parents could grant access for 13- and 14-year-olds after assessments, with enforcement likely via a digital age-verification app. Following Australia’s recent under-16 social media ban, Denmark seeks to go further in protecting children from harmful digital content and excessive online exposure.

A 19-year-old girl who was facing deportation from her adopted home in Denmark due to her visa-related issue had attracted the attention of the middle-aged billionaire owner of Tesla, Elon Musk, as he was publicly lusting over her. The girl, identified as Audrey Morris, is originally from Los Angeles, California. 54-year-old Musk, father of at least 14 children, made a sleazy comment on her now-deleted post, “8 or above level hotness should get an exemption.”

“I wasn’t surprised [by Musk’s input], I guess you could say, because from the beginning, the second that my case was kind of made public, it has been about appearances and because, ‘oh, she’s blonde and she’s white!’ And so the thing he said in of itself wasn’t shocking to me, but coming from him, yes, it was definitely...I was floored.” said Morris to Daily Beast. The remark drew significant flak from the social media users, with many branding him “creepy”. She lamented that she hoped it would have drawn attention to the legal aspect of her case instead of her physical appearance. “It would’ve been really cool if he commented something like, ‘Oh wow, look how many academic things she’s reached,’ or whatever. That would’ve been great. It could have been so helpful,” she said. Morris, however, was granted a residency permit for 10 years; her brother and mother had citizenship. Being a teenager, she could not help but notice the bright side, she added, no matter what the embarrassment, if this brings attention to people who care, then it was a win for her. Morris had been living a major part of his life in Aarhus, Denmark’s second-biggest city. The prospect of her deportation was so dire that she was preparing for contingency plan to live in the US. “I have my grandparents and some friends in the USA. But Denmark is my home. One hundred per cent. I am as Danish as a foreigner can possibly be," she told Stifstidende in January.

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Dec 22) reiterated that the United States “needs” Greenland for national security and not for minerals. He added that the new special envoy appointed by him to the Arctic island would “lead the charge.” This comes after Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy to Greenland a day earlier, sparking criticism from Denmark and Greenland over the US president’s plans to take control over the territory.“We need Greenland for national security, not for minerals... Denmark is set to become one of the first nations to legally protect individuals from AI-driven deepfakes by treating a person’s face, voice and likeness as their own “copyright”. The draft law aims to ban the sharing of realistic digital imitations without consent, require tech platforms to remove offending material and impose hefty fines for non-compliance. While satire and parody are exempt, the measure targets the misuse of AI to spread false identity or misinformation.
