“I’ll go ahead with Mohammed Shami because he will find form although he hasn’t played, but he’s that kind of bowler who, once given an opportunity, can always step up and do the job for India. Hopes of winning T20 World Cup are a bit less, admits Aakash Chopra amid India's bowling woes

After a disappointing campaign in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, India will now shift their focus to the twin home series versus Australia and South Africa, respectively. India are set to host Australia in three T20Is before South Africa arrives for three T20Is and ODIs each. Prior to that, the BCCI selection committee, on Monday (September 12), announced two strong squads for Australia, SA series along with also revealing the final 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, to be held from October-November in Australia.

Talking about the Australia series, India will host the defending champions in three T20Is starting from September 20. The matches will be held on September 20 (Mohali), September 23 (Nagpur) and September 25 (Hyderabad). For this series, pacer Arshdeep Singh -- who was heavily trolled for his dropped catch in the India-Pakistan Super 4 clash at the Asia Cup -- has been rested.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been rested for the SA T20Is, which will get underway on September 28. The remaining two T20Is will be held on October 02 (Guwahati) and October 04 (Indore). After this, a Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian team is likely to face the Proteas in a three-match ODI series, from October 06, with all the T20 WC-bound players set to be rested (as per reports).&nbsp;

The biggest takeaway from the 16-man squads for the Australia and SA series is that India have recalled senior pacer Md Shami along with Deepak Chahar. Chahar was a late entry into the main squad of the Asia Cup, with Avesh Khan's illness, but Shami is set to return to the T20I squad for the first time after last year's World Cup. Along with Shami, Jasprit Burmah and Harshal Patel will be eager to return to action in style after lengthy injury layoffs.&nbsp;

Talking about the Australia series, India will host the defending champions in three T20Is starting from September 20. The matches will be held on September 20 (Mohali), September 23 (Nagpur) and September 25 (Hyderabad). For this series, pacer Arshdeep Singh -- who was heavily trolled for his dropped catch in the India-Pakistan Super 4 clash at the Asia Cup -- has been rested. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been rested for the SA T20Is, which will get underway on September 28. Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh ripped into Team India's selection after their disappointing six-wicket loss against Sri Lanka in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on Tuesday (September 06). India failed to defend a total of 173 runs as they suffered their second straight defeat in the Super Four stage of the tournament.

It was a fine all-round performance from Sri Lanka as they stunned the defending champions at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. India got off to a brilliant start with captain Rohit Sharma going all guns blazing from the word go. However, the Men in Blue lost the plot in the middle and were restricted to 173 runs in 20 overs.

Sri Lanka rode on half-centuries from openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis before finishing cameos from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and skipper Dhasun Shanka to clinch the game in the final over with one ball to spare. While Sri Lanka's victory has all but confirmed their spot in the final, India are on the brink of elimination after the disappointing loss.

In the wake of the defeat, Harbhajan questioned India's team selection for the Asia Cup 2022 and asked why the likes of Umran Malik and Deepak Chahar were not picked to strengthen the bowling attack, which looked in all sorts of troubles in both games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Harbhajan also questioned the lack of chances for Dinesh Karthik as a finisher.

“Where is Umran malik (150km speed)? Why Deepak Chahar (top quality swing bowler) wasn’t there? Tell me if these guys don’t deserve the chances?? After KL Rahul-led Men in Blue opted to bat first and rode on Shubman Gill's maiden international ton, 130 off 97 balls, Indian pacer Deepak Chahar made heads turn as soon as Zimbabwe's 290-run chase commenced.&nbsp;

As soon as the run-chase kicked off, Chahar had the opportunity to mankad opener Innocent Kaia on the first ball of the second innings. Seeing Kaia way outside the crease, Chahar&nbsp;wiped off the bails at the non-striker's end but refused to appeal. With the Indian speedster not appealing, the Zimbabwean batter was given a reprieve. However, he couldn't make the most of the lifeline provided as Chahar got the better of him in his second over itself and the right-hander made the long walk back to the pavillion for 6. The decision had not gone in favour of Innocent before stand-in captain Rahul went upstairs for a successful review.

"Every time you make a comeback, it is important for any player to score runs, and take wickets. I was out with an injury for almost six months so I was looking for an opportunity to come and perform. I knew I will be making my comeback in this series, I played all the practice games, and I was bowling more than six overs. The day I started bowling, the first session I bowled was six overs," Chahar said in a post-match press conference.

"When you know you are going to play ODIs, your workload is like that. Before coming here, I played in two-three practice games and I bowled ten overs so yeah. It is difficult because you expect so much from yourself, you want to make a place for yourself," he added.

"If you are not playing for a long time, other guys get the chance and they perform well so they create a place for themselves. If you want to cement your place, you have to give performances on a consistent basis, the pressure is always there on a bowler. The player can just perform and it is the only thing in your control," Chahar said.

Speaking about his injury, Chahar said: "The selection for the T20 World Cup is not in my control, I do not know whether I will be selected or not. But skill-wise, I have worked really hard."

Senior opener KL Rahul has been left out of the India squad which will travel to Zimbabwe for an ODI series next month after aggravating his hamstring injury, a development which could potentially jeopardise his T20 World Cup chances.

It is understood that Rahul hasn’t yet recovered despite undergoing a successful sports hernia surgery for lower abdominal injury. His hamstring also remains sore. India will play 3 ODIs in Zimbabwe on August 18, 20 and 22.

“I wanted to clarify a couple of things about my health and fitness. My surgery in June was successful and I had begun my training with hope of returning to national duty for the tour of West Indies. Unfortunately as I was returning to full fitness, I tested positive for Covid-19,” he tweeted.

He expressed hope of coming back for Asia Cup in UAE. “This naturally pushes things back by a couple of weeks but I aim to recover as quickly as possible and be available for selection as quickly as I can,” he further wrote. 
 
“To represent the country is highest honour and I cannot wait to get out there back in blue.”

Off-spinner Washington Sundar, who has made a stellar start to his English county career with Lancashire is back in the squad along with seamer Deepak Chahar after successful completion of his rehabilitation following hamstring and back injuries.

In a nutshell, it can be said that two toppers fell flat and occupied the last two positions in the overall standings as other teams have surely mastered the art of winning big moments against them. However, the bigger question remains -- is MI-CSK's drubbing really a shocker? Well, it was always on the cards.

Many connoisseurs of the game might be quick to point out that the 'law of averages' was always going to bite the two famed sides. However, more than that CSK-MI's muddled approach, questionable team selections, playing styles, strategies, etc. were some notable reasons for their massive downfall.

After letting go of some big names in their roster, MI only managed to re-buy Ishan Kishan. One might argue that CSK did pick young guns such as Mukesh Choudhary, Maheesh Theeshana, Simranjit Singh, etc., nonetheless, they never cared to properly rebuild their bowling unit. Either they had international bowlers woefully out of form, or only good to chip in with few overs, or it turned out to be too much reliance on youngsters in Deepak Chahar's absence.

Firstly, if Dhoni was sure to give up captaincy to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja much before the season started, Jadeja still looked like a fish out of the water. His&nbsp;approach was half-baked whereas, in some crunch games, he seemed out of the picture with Dhoni leading the charge. Lastly, when Jadeja relinquished captaincy and Dhoni returned to the post officially, reports of a rift between CSK team management and Jadeja took precedence. Even if the reports have been quashed completely, something was surely not right in the way things were handled&nbsp;in the Yellow Army camp.

While CSK admitted to have not read the pitch properly on a few occasions (read Dhoni's post-match comments after their second loss to Gujarat Titans), they didn't back Devon Conway after his failure on debut. MI, on the other hand, dropped Tim David -- who was roped in for INR 82.5 million -- after a few flop shows. Similarly, MI didn't go all-out in the usage of Jasprit Bumrah with him not opening the bowling in several matches. Meanwhile,&nbsp;CSK's rotation of bowlers and top order's timid approach never saw them coming to their usual best. During Jadeja's captaincy, the rotation of bowlers was also not up to the mark.

These factors led to both CSK and MI failing to emerge on top in several close encounters (versus Lucknow Super Giants, Gujarat, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, etc.). There was utter chaos, a lack of role clarity and imbalance among batters and bowlers, especially at the initial stages, to confirm both sides' early exit.

IPL 2022: How MS Dhoni's CSK and Rohit Sharma-led MI's debacle was always on the cards

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have not had much going their way in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. With six losses in their first eight matches this season, CSK stand on the brink of facing early elimination as they desperately aim to spark a turnaround. The defending champions were expected to be a force to reckon with after a memorable title triumph last season but they have failed to replicate their success this year.

CSK are no stranger to slower starts to their campaign but this season was different as they slumped to four straight defeats in their first four games before breaking the deadlock against Royal Challengers Bangalore to get their first points on the table. CSK were expected to get some winning momentum behind their back after their win over RCB but they lost two in their next three matches as the slump continued.

CSK were in for a stern test at the start of the season after stalwart MS Dhoni's decision to hand over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja. While many thought the decision could prove to be the right one considering Dhoni is past his best as a batter and Jadeja can learn from him while he is still around, the move didn't quite work in CSK's favour.

The defending champions went on to endure one of the worst possible starts to the season as Jadeja looked overwhelmingly burdened on the field with the captaincy responsibility. His personal performances with both the bat and the ball also weren't up to the mark nor were some of his decisions under pressure.

However, Jadeja's dodgy form has not been the only reason behind CSK's struggles this season as the four-time champions have lacked good starts at the top of the order and have also backed cutting edge in their pace department. The lack of a power-hitter in the middle-order has also seen them fail to get over the line in close run-chases.

Decoding CSK's struggles in IPL 2022:

While he is a smart bowler, Chahar can be handy with the bat in the lower middle-order and his recent performances with the willow have only strengthened his case as an all-rounder. Chahar recalled how CSK skipper MS Dhoni had asked him in 2020 to justify his batting potential in the IPL and focus more on batting.

In an interview with SportsYaari, Chahar said Dhoni was having a conversation with him on the day he had announced his retirement in 2020. The CSK skipper had urged Chahar to justify his batting potential.&nbsp;

Not many know but Chahar, who had played under Dhoni at the Rising Pune Supergiants was bouht by the franchise as a batting all-rounder. Chahar said he has been trying to become an all-rounder ever since he started playing cricket as a child and was probably a better bater than a bowler when he had joined the Rising Pune Supergiants.

"I have been batting since I was young and this pursuit of being an all-rounder had started back then itself. In 2017-18, I used to bat better because I was at home and so I used to practice batting a lot. In fact, I used to focus more on batting than bowling because there was a limit on the number of balls you would bowl in one day because doing more would take a toll on your body," said Chahar.

"When I went to Pune (Rising Pune Supergiants), I reckon my batting was better than my bowling. But after that, when I started playing more, especially overseas, I didn’t get much chances to perform with the bat. The amount of practice would come down. Whenever I played First-Class, the main batters would get more time. Because of this, the fluency in my batting got affected," he added.

Since joining CSK in 2018, Chahar has improved much as a bowler and has also become a regular for India in white-ball cricket. He has so far played 58 matches for CSK in IPL and has 58 wickets to his name. Chahar has won two IPL titles with the Dhoni-led side and will be drawing a salary even bigger than that of his captain from IPL 2022.

While he has been excellent with the ball in the powerplay and has also improved his performances in the death, Chahar's batting prowess has added another dimension to his game. While he is a smart bowler, Chahar can be handy with the bat in the lower middle-order and his recent performances with the willow have only strengthened his case as an all-rounder. Chahar recalled how CSK skipper MS Dhoni had asked him in 2020 to justify his batting potential in the IPL and focus more on batting. In an interview with SportsYaari, Chahar said Dhoni was having a conversation with him on the day he had announced his retirement in 2020. The CSK skipper had urged Chahar to justify his batting potential. "One day Mahi bhai said to me… 'you have done a good job with the bowling but haven't justified your batting. I think you should do that'. He told me this, the day he announced his retirement in 2020. We were sitting in the evening and talking. Dhoni said I should focus more on batting," said Chahar. Chahar said he has been trying to become an all-rounder ever since he started playing cricket as a child and was probably a better bater than a bowler when he had joined the Rising Pune Supergiants. "I have been batting since I was young and this pursuit of being an all-rounder had started back then itself. In 2017-18, I used to bat better because I was at home and so I used to practice batting a lot. In fact, I used to focus more on batting than bowling because there was a limit on the number of balls you would bowl in one day because doing more would take a toll on your body," said Chahar. But after that, when I started playing more, especially overseas, I didn’t get much chances to perform with the bat. The amount of practice would come down. Whenever I played First-Class, the main batters would get more time. Because of this, the fluency in my batting got affected," he added. Since joining CSK in 2018, Chahar has improved much as a bowler and has also become a regular for India in white-ball cricket. He has so far played 58 matches for CSK in IPL and has 58 wickets to his name. Chahar has won two IPL titles with the Dhoni-led side and will be drawing a salary even bigger than that of his captain from IPL 2022.
