Representing the Kites, Suresh stunned Grand Slam winner Daniil Medvedev 6-4 in the concluding set, sealing his team’s dramatic surge into the championship match. The Kites, who began the day anchored to the bottom of the table, produced an astonishing turnaround to beat the Falcons 24-19 and clinch second place with 58 points. Waiting for them in the decider are the AOS Eagles, who cruised past VB Realty Hawks 22-12 to finish atop the standings with 65 points. The evening also carried a strong emotional current, as India’s doubles legend Rohan Bopanna played what could be his final match on home soil. Teaming up with Medvedev for the Falcons, he battled Nick Kyrgios and Suresh in a high-voltage doubles duel, edging out the Kites pair 7-6. In its first edition on Indian soil, the World Tennis League has attracted marquee global names to Bengaluru. Yet, Day 3 belonged to the homegrown talent. Sumit Nagal, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, and Suresh drew the loudest cheers at the SM Krishna Stadium, each delivering standout performances. Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina, tennis's fan-favorite couple, kicked off Friday’s action but found themselves competing on opposite sides in mixed doubles. Svitolina and Yuki Bhambri, representing the Hawks, edged out Monfils and Shrivalli 6-4 in a high-energy opener. India’s No. 1 singles player, Nagal, then swung the pendulum firmly in the Falcons’ favour. Playing with fierce intent, the 28-year-old overpowered Wimbledon finalist Denis Shapovalov 6-1, giving his side a crucial push. Shrivalli, who had spent the first two days rallying her teammates from the sidelines, embraced the spotlight with poise. After a spirited mixed doubles showing, she took on Rafa Nadal Academy prodigy Maaya and dominated the contest 6-2 with crisp, fearless ball-striking. She later paired with Paula Badosa to defeat Svitolina and Maaya 6-3. Badosa, impressed by Shrivalli’s composure and firepower, didn’t hold back her praise. “India, you have a future star here,” the Australian Open semi-finalist told the Bengaluru crowd. “She was our driving force today. From the first session we hit together, I knew she had the game.” The Kites’ push toward the final had begun earlier in the day when Marta Kostyuk overcame Magda Linette 6-4. Winning three of the four sets, the Kites leapfrogged both the Falcons and Hawks to clinch the last championship berth. The German second seed felled Cobolli 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) and will next face Daniil Medvedev, after the Russian third seed beat American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-3 in his quarter-final. In a rematch of a third-round meeting at Roland Garros three weeks ago, Zverev again produced an impressive serving performance. He crucially rallied from 0-40 down in the second and fourth games of first set. Also Read - Carlos Alcaraz edges past Munar to reach Queen’s Club quarters A finalist in Stuttgart last week Zvervev will be hoping to go one better on the grass of Halle after being a losing finalist at the tournament in 2016 and 2017. It wasn't all plain sailing as he had to take an unscheduled break at 1-1 and deuce in the first set. "I felt fine before the match, and then out of nowhere I felt really, really bad and felt ill," recounted Zverev. "I went to throw up, and then 15 minutes later I felt okay again. So I don't know what it was. I've never experienced that before, to be honest. Hopefully I will be fine the next couple of hours, when the adrenalin settles. After that, I think it was a pretty good match." He sealed the contest with a big first serve in the second set tie-break. Medvedev earlier reached his third semi of the season. He is guaranteed to return to the Top 10 in the ATP rankings. Zverev, who last met Medvedev in the 2024 Australian Open semi-finals, said: "Definitely he's one of the toughest opponents in my career. It's going to be a great match and I'm really looking forward to facing him." In the other quarter-finals, Alexander Bublik, who claimed defending champion and world number one Jannik Sinner's scalp on Wednesday, eased past Tomas Machac to set up a last four date with eighth seed Karen Khachanov who despatched Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-2. Bublik revealed his giant-killing Sinner success had cost him sleep. "I didn't have a really good night of sleep," the 2023 Halle winner said. “I tried to keep focused, but there are thoughts and everything on social media, receiving a lot of messages." Angry Medvedev refuses to shake hands with Griekspoor after Dubai Championships exit

Last year's runner-up Daniil Medvedev was dumped out in the Australian Open second round early Friday morning by 19-year-old qualifier Learner Tien in a massive Melbourne shock.
In his debut Australian Open, the American ranked 121 stunned the world number five 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (8/10), 1-6, 7-6 (10/7) in a nailbiter and faces France's Corentin Moutet in the next round.
With the time ticking towards 3:00 am, the left-handed Californian Tien soaked up the applause at Margaret Court Arena after the biggest win of his young career.

The pair did battle over a gruelling four hours and 48 minutes of seesawing action that was punctuated near its denouement by a short rain break.
Tien had defeated Argentina's Camilo Ugo Carabelli in five sets in the first round for his maiden victory at a Grand Slam at the fourth attempt.
It was a meek exit for Russia's former world number one Medvedev, who has lost three of the last four finals at Melbourne Park including to Jannik Sinner in 2024.
The 28-year-old Medvedev needed five sets to beat the 418th-ranked Kasidit Samrej on Tuesday in his first match of the season, smashing his racquet and a net camera in a rage at one point.
He started more serenely against Tien but errors crept into his play and Tien shook off any early nerves by clinching the first set in 47 minutes.
Tien showed his mettle and his pedigree in the eighth game by prevailing in one gruelling 32-shot rally.
The 2021 US Open champion Medvedev and Tien went to a second-set tie break, where the Russian was left exasperated by a double foot fault on his way to losing the set.
The third set again went to a tie break, where Medvedev pulled out an ace under excruciating pressure to save match point and then clinched the set at the third time of asking to come back from the brink.
Suddenly it was all Medvedev and he raced through the fourth set to tee up a decider.
Tien appeared to have run out of steam.
But from somewhere he located some extra reserves of energy and the duo exchanged breaks early in the fifth set.&nbsp;
There was still time for another twist at 5-5 and 15-all on Tien's serve when a shower came, briefly holding up proceedings.
They exchanged breaks of serve to go into a 10-point tie break, where there was again nothing between them until Tien finally sealed the deal.&nbsp;
Tien is a known talent in tennis circles.
He was defeated by fellow teenage prospect Joao Fonseca -- who stunned ninth seed Andrey Rublev in round one in Melbourne -- in last month's NextGen final for up-and-coming players.

Medvedev faces fine for smashing racquet, net camera in AO meltdown

Daniil Medvedev is still searching for his first ATP tournament victory this year after the world number five lost to Australia's Alexei Popyrin for the first time in his career at the Paris Masters on Wednesday (Oct 30).

Medvedev won the Paris title in 2020 but has not found the indoor tournament to his liking in recent years&nbsp;–&nbsp;the defeat to Popyrin is the third successive time he has gone out in his opening round.

Popyrin, who has been in a rich vein of form this year winning his first Masters tournament in Montreal in August and beating Novak Djokovic in the US Open, edged Medvedev 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a gripping second round match.

For Popyrin, ranked 24 in the world, it was only his third win over a player in the top five.

"It is the first time I have beaten him (in four meetings)," said Popyrin, who will play the winner of the match between France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Karen Khachanov of Russia.

"We have had some right old battles in the past and it is a real pleasure to have performed like this this time round."

Medvedev, who has already qualified for the season-ending Masters, fought back twice in the deciding set.

He came back from 4-1 down to force a tie-break and then trailing 4-1 in that he levelled at 4-4.

However, with Popyrin leading 5-4, Medvedev double-faulted giving the 25-year-old Australian two match points and he wasted no time in sealing the victory on the first one.

<h2>'Still a contender'</h2>

Medvedev is not the first high-profile seed to fall at the first hurdle as his compatriot Andrey Rublev and Norway's Casper Ruud have already lost.

"It was a tough match," said Medvedev.

"I should have played better but at the same time, I had my opportunities, and I did not take them.

"It was a very tight match."

Carlos Alcaraz remains in the mix having won his first match on Tuesday and is favoured to take the title after Italian world number one Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament due to an intestinal virus.

Alcaraz will play France's Ugo Humbert in the third round, the French number one breezed past America's Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday.

A potential dark horse for the title is Bulgarian eighth seed Grigor Dimitrov who beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7 (9/11), 6-3, 7-5.

Dimitrov still has a chance of qualifying for the Masters, if he won the Paris title he would move past Djokovic (sixth), Ruud (seventh) and Rublev (eighth).

Just the top eight qualify for the climax to the ATP season in Turin.

"I would give a lot to be in (Turin)," said Dimitrov, who reached the Paris final last year.

"I'm in a place where I am still a contender, I'm still fighting against the best players in the world, and still beating the younger guys.

"This gives me confidence and makes me happy."

Germany's world number three Alexander Zverev is already booked into Turin and begins his Paris campaign later on Wednesday against the Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor.

For Popyrin, ranked 24 in the world, it was only his third win over a player in the top five. "It is the first time I have beaten him (in four meetings)," said Popyrin, who will play the winner of the match between France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Karen Khachanov of Russia. "We have had some right old battles in the past and it is a real pleasure to have performed like this this time round." Medvedev, who has already qualified for the season-ending Masters, fought back twice in the deciding set. He came back from 4-1 down to force a tie-break and then trailing 4-1 in that he levelled at 4-4. However, with Popyrin leading 5-4, Medvedev double-faulted giving the 25-year-old Australian two match points and he wasted no time in sealing the victory on the first one. 'Still a contender' Medvedev is not the first high-profile seed to fall at the first hurdle as his compatriot Andrey Rublev and Norway's Casper Ruud have already lost. "It was a tough match," said Medvedev. "I should have played better but at the same time, I had my opportunities, and I did not take them. "It was a very tight match." Carlos Alcaraz remains in the mix having won his first match on Tuesday and is favoured to take the title after Italian world number one Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament due to an intestinal virus. Alcaraz will play France's Ugo Humbert in the third round, the French number one breezed past America's Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday. A potential dark horse for the title is Bulgarian eighth seed Grigor Dimitrov who beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7 (9/11), 6-3, 7-5. Dimitrov still has a chance of qualifying for the Masters, if he won the Paris title he would move past Djokovic (sixth), Ruud (seventh) and Rublev (eighth). Just the top eight qualify for the climax to the ATP season in Turin. "I would give a lot to be in (Turin)," said Dimitrov, who reached the Paris final last year. "I'm in a place where I am still a contender, I'm still fighting against the best players in the world, and still beating the younger guys. "This gives me confidence and makes me happy." Germany's world number three Alexander Zverev is already booked into Turin and begins his Paris campaign later on Wednesday against the Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor. World number one Jannik Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals after both had straight-set victories on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic also progressed to the next round after comfortable wins.

But world number three Alexander Zverev is out after losing to 66th ranked David Goffin 6-4, 7-5.

Shelton, ranked 16, knocked Sinner out at the same stage last year but the Italian looked confident from the start and won in 88 minutes.&nbsp;

The US Open champion pulled ahead in the ninth game of the first set, breaking when Shelton hit long, then dominated the second set tiebreak. &nbsp;

World number five Medvedev and Tsitsipas were meeting for the 14th time.&nbsp;

The Greek started the second set strong, breaking in the first game, but Medvedev broke in the fourth and eighth to claim victory.&nbsp;

Medvedev and Sinner have already met four times in the final stages of tournaments this year.&nbsp;

Sinner beat Medvedev in the semi-finals in Miami, the quarter-finals of the US Open and in the Australian Open final, but the Russian ended the Italian's hopes in the last eight at Wimbledon in an epic five-set battle.&nbsp;

"I'm gonna bring the fight," Medvedev said.&nbsp;

"I could have done much better in the US Open... I didn't explore enough my potential during this match. So I'm going to try to explore this potential tomorrow," he said.

Sinner said: "We know each other quite well now, we know exactly what to expect, more or less."

"Of course, it's going to be a very tough match, physical match, mental match, and also tactical, so let's see what's coming."

<h2>Alcaraz downs Monfils</h2>

World number two Alcaraz, who beat Sinner in the China Open final a week ago, downed veteran Gael Monfils 6-4, 7-5 for a 12th straight victory.&nbsp;

The 38-year-old Frenchman upset Alcaraz at their last meeting in Cincinnati in August and the Spaniard admitted that "was on his mind", saying he was glad he had "stayed calm". &nbsp;

Alcaraz's quarter-final opponent is 23-year-old Tomas Machac, who beat 13th-ranked Tommy Paul 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.&nbsp;

"He has really great tennis. He's so, so fast as well, so I have to be focused on that," Alcaraz said of the Czech.&nbsp;

Machac's teenage compatriot Jakub Mensik burnished his record against top 10 players, overpowering Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 just days after sending world number six Andrey Rublev home.

Mensik's next challenge is Djokovic after the Serb finished off Russian Roman Safiullin 6-3, 6-2 in 73 minutes.

The former world number one said he had a "great relationship" off the court with Mensik's family.&nbsp;

"I always believed that he's got the potential to be one of the top players in the world and he's building that kind of momentum right now," the 37-year-old said.

He has previously played practice sets with the 19-year-old.&nbsp;

"He got bigger and stronger. So, yeah, it's going to be fun," Djokovic grinned, anticipating a "tough challenge".

<h2>Zverev out</h2>

The last match of the day saw the tournament lose its second seed with Zverev's straight-set defeat.&nbsp;

Goffin broke first and kept the pressure up.&nbsp;

An increasingly miserable-looking Zverev mounted a second set revival, but couldn't quite close the gap as the 33-year-old Belgian persevered.

"I had nothing to lose, but (Zverev) is always tough to play," said an emotional Goffin, who&nbsp;said he had decided to mount a career revival a few months ago.&nbsp;

"It was a great feeling... I didn't expect to be that offensive, that relaxed on that court."

Goffin will next face the United States' Taylor Fritz, who took less than an hour to demolish 14th-ranked Holger Rune 6-1, 6-2.&nbsp;

Shanghai Masters: Jannik Sinner to face Daniil Medvedev in quarters, Alexander Zverev crashes out

World number one Jannik Sinner stormed into the US Open semifinals with a four-set win over Russia's Daniil Medvedev on Thursday (Sep 5). Sinner, thus, reached his first-ever US Open semifinal with a&nbsp;6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win, at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York,&nbsp;and will now lock horns with the 25th-ranked Jake Draper, of Britain, for a place in the final.&nbsp;

Sinner started with a lead courtesy of a 6-2 win in the opening set, where Medvedev looked rusty and committed as many as 15 unforced errors as opposed to the Italian's six. Medvedev, however, bounced back in style and closed the second set&nbsp;with a double break of his own to level the quarterfinal. Nonetheless, Sinner came back strongly and won the third set in half an hour before closing out the game with a 6-4 win in the fourth and penultimate set.

After the contest, Sinner said, "It was very tough, I knew it would be very physical. It was strange in the first two sets, whoever got the break started to roll."

The Italian further opined on his next opponent Draper and stated,&nbsp;"We are good friends off the court. He's having an incredible tournament and hasn't dropped a set."

Sinner, the Australian Open 2024 winner, is surely the favourite now at the US Open. He, however,&nbsp;won't take anything lightly ahead of the semifinals as the US Open has provided enough upsets in both men's and women's singles. In the men's category, the likes of Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz were ousted before the fourth-round. While Djokovic, who won gold in the Paris Olympics, was stunned in the third-round, by Alexei Popyrin of Australia, Alcaraz was shown the exit door by Dutchman&nbsp;Botic van de Zandschulp during his second-round match.

Even in the women's singles, world number one Iga Swiatek lost to USA's Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinal on Wednesday (Sep 4).

World number one Jannik Sinner defeats Daniil Medvedev to reach first US Open semifinals

Daniil Medvedev said he was enjoying his growing rivalry with world number one Jannik Sinner despite coming out on the wrong end of the scoreline in the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open on Wednesday. The Russian has now played his 23-year-old rival four times this year, also losing in the Australian Open final and the semi-finals of the Miami Masters but triumphing in the last eight at Wimbledon.

"Lately a tough one for me, but compared to some matches I played with him last year when he started to beat me, I felt like I was doing the right things. I just didn't manage to execute them well," Medvedev, the world number five, said after his 6-2 1-6 6-1 6-4 defeat. "I like it. You know, to have big rivalries like this always pushes me to be better, and sometimes I lose, sometimes I win. I will try to be better next time, and that's the only thing I can do."

Medvedev still leads their head-to-head 7-6, although the Italian Sinner has won six of their last seven meetings. "He's one of the best players in the world, by ranking the best, and he deserves it," Medvedev added. "He's a tough player to play against. He feels the game well. He chooses the right shot at the right moment many times. "That's where I actually like to play players like him because that's where it gets very tight, where every point matters."

Medvedev said he thought an Australian Open final, reaching the fourth round of the French Open, the semis at Wimbledon and the last eight at Flushing Meadows meant he had enjoyed a "quite good" year at the Grand Slams.

The 28-year-old, whose 2021 U.S. Open victory remains his only major title, said he would continue to work hard to close the gap with the best players in the game, even if their names had changed since the start of his career.

"There were always tough guys," he said. "Before it was like Rafa (Nadal), Roger (Federer), Novak (Djokovic); now it is Carlos (Alcaraz), Jannik, some other guys. "Just have to practice hard, try to improve your game and try to beat them."

US Open 2024: Russia's Danill Medvedev enjoying rivalry with Jannik Sinner despite another loss

Daniil Medvedev set-up a potential US Open quarter-final showdown with world number one Jannik Sinner on Monday as both men looked to exploit the huge hole left by the shock exits of superstar duo Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.

Medvedev, the 2021 champion in New York, outclassed Nuno Borges, who was bidding to become the first Portuguese man to make a Grand Slam quarter-final, 6-0, 6-1, 6-3.

Top seed Sinner, who won his maiden Slam at the Australian Open this year, takes on Tommy Paul in the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

French Open champion and women's world number one Iga Swiatek, meanwhile, stayed on course for a sixth Grand Slam title with a straight sets win over Russia's Liudmila Samsonova.

Medvedev, the only former champion left after the defeats of four-time winner Djokovic and 2022 champion Alcaraz, is in the quarter-finals for the fifth time in six years.

The world number five easily downed 34th-ranked Borges whose challenge fizzled out under the weight of 51 unforced errors while Medvedev broke serve eight times.

"I played Tommy twice this season. I beat him once but I feel as if he should have beaten me both times," said Medvedev who was also runner-up in 2019 and last year.

"I've had unbelievable battles with Jannik. It will be very physical for both of us."

Sinner, 23, faces Paul of the United States hoping to become the only man this year to reach the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slams.&nbsp;

The Italian made the last-eight at New York in 2022 where he squandered a match point in losing to eventual champion Alcaraz.

Paul, the 14th seed, is looking to join compatriots Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals as the US looks for a first male Grand Slam champion since Andy Roddick triumphed in New York in 2003.

If Sinner gets through he will meet Medvedev for the fourth time this year.

Sinner came back from two sets to love down to defeat the mercurial Medvedev in the Australian Open final and came out on top in the Miami semi-finals.

Medvedev triumphed at Wimbledon in a five-set quarter-final.

Jack Draper became the first British man since Andy Murray in 2016 to reach the quarter-finals by seeing off Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.

The 22-year-old left-hander has only dropped served once over four matches on his way to a maiden Slam quarter-final, winning 47 of 48 service games and saving 20 of 21 break points.

Draper hailed the influence of Murray, the former world number one and 2012 US Open champion, who retired from tennis following the Paris Olympics.

"He's a legend and an icon and if I have half the career that he had I will be a happy man," said the 25th seed who goes on to face Alex de Minaur.

The 10th seeded De Minaur won an all-Australian battle with Jordan Thompson 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Four-time French Open winner Swiatek, the 2022 champion in New York, celebraated her 100th Grand Slam match by cantering to a 6-4, 6-1 win over 16th-ranked Samsonova.

The Pole will take on American sixth seed Jessica Pegula for a place in the semi-finals.

"There will be some long rallies and intense hitting," said Swiatek of facing Pegula who she also beat in the quarter-finals on her way to the 2022 title.

US sixth seed Pegula made the last-eight for the second time with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Russia's Diana Shnaider.

Beatriz Haddad Maia became the first Brazilian woman to reach the quarter-finals since Maria Bueno in 1968 when she defeated 2014 runner-up Caroline Wozniacki.

The 22nd-ranked left-hander converted a third match point to defeat the former world number one 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

She will next face 2023 semi-finalist Karolina Muchova who knocked out French Open and Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini, the fifth seed, 6-3, 6-3.

Muchova, ranked at 52, who only returned to the tour in June after 10 months out with a wrist injury, has yet to drop a set and knocked out two-time champion Naomi Osaka in the second round.
