Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj on Thursday got emotional as the Indian national anthem boomed at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground ahead of the third Test. Siraj was seen wiping off his tears as both the teams lined up for their respective national anthem. After the end of day’s play, Siraj revealed why he got emotional as he said that he was missing his father, who had passed away around a week after the Indian team landed in Australia.

Siraj, who had the option of heading home to be with his family, stayed with the team in a bid to serve his nation, which was his father’s dream as well. Siraj, who made his debut in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, said his father always wanted me to play Test cricket and would have been proud today.

“I was missing my dad during the national anthem. My dad always wanted me to play Test cricket and he would have been really proud to see me in whites for India,” Siraj told reporters in a virtual press conference after the end of Day 1’s play in Sydney.

Australia on Thursday ended Day 1 of the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on high as the hosts posted 166/2 with star batsmen Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne well settled at the crease.

In what was a rain-hit start to the first day of the Sydney Test, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. The Sydney pitch, which has a tinge of grass, looked great for batting but also assisted the seamers early on.

Continuing his great start in the Test arena, Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj, who made his Test debut in Melbourne, dismissed Aussie opener, David Warner, for five as the southpaw edged one straight to Cheteshwar Pujara in the slip cordon.

However, as the pitch settled, it became easier for the batsmen with debutant Will Pucovski and Marnus Labuschagne stitching a 100-run stand for the hosts. While Pucovski was dropped twice by Rishabh Pant, the elegant batsman went on to register his maiden half-century to become the 82nd Australian to score a fifty in Test debut. The youngster was trapped plumb by another debutant Navdeep Saini as the quick, angled-in delivery did the job for the visitors.

Steve Smith, who is going through a lean patch, played with intent and ended the day on 31 with Labuschagne scoring an unbeaten 67 to end the day.

Indian bowlers bowled well but the dropped catches and a flat and slowish Sydney track didn’t help their case much.

“I'm good, nice to spend a bit of time out there, nice to stitch in a partnership with Marnus. I wanted to put him (Ashwin) under a little bit of pressure which I haven't done this series. Was just trying to hold the grip a bit tighter, I've been struggling, so I was getting into good positions today. Was good to get a couple of boundaries early. Marnus played well, hopefully, we go along well tomorrow,” said Smith at the end of Day 1 in Sydney.

With an early start set for Friday, India would be looking to pick some quick wickets and put pressure on the Aussies. Whereas Australia would be hoping that Smith and Labuschagne register a big partnership.

A spectator at Australia's showpiece Boxing Day Test against India has tested positive for coronavirus, authorities said Wednesday, warning fans seated nearby that they must get tested and isolate.

State health authorities said the man in his thirties was not infectious while at the famed Melbourne Cricket Ground on the second day of play "but there is potential he acquired the virus while there" or at a nearby shopping centre.

"The MCG is being investigated as a potential source for the infection," Victoria's Department of Health said.

"We're encouraging anyone who was in The Great Southern Stand, zone 5 of the MCG between 12.30pm and 3.30pm on 27 December, to get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result."

The Boxing Day Test is a centrepiece of Australia's sporting calendar and just under 30,000 people attended this year, well short of capacity.

Despite having been largely free of Covid-19, Australia is currently battling to bring a cluster of cases under control and hoping aggressive testing and contact tracing can help avoid full-scale lockdowns.

The news comes on the eve of the third Test between Australia and India, which has caused some controversy by being played in Sydney, the epicentre of a recent outbreak.

The number of spectators has been restricted to 25 percent of seating capacity in order to make sure it does not become a mass spreading event.

Authorities in New South Wales said the revelation from Melbourne was "obviously influencing our thinking" about how the Sydney Test would proceed, without elaborating.

India's tour Down Under has been beset with Covid-19 related problems.

Five players were criticised for seemingly breaching the team's biosecurity bubble by going out to a restaurant.

Australia-India Boxing Day Test declared possible Covid hotspot

Towering paceman Kyle Jamieson completed an 11-wicket match haul Wednesday as New Zealand thrashed Pakistan in the second Test to become the world's top-ranked team.

Jamieson was near unplayable in Pakistan's second innings, finishing with six for 48 after his five for 69 in the first innings, to give New Zealand victory by an innings and 176 runs.

The win inside four days in Christchurch, which completed a 2-0 series sweep, also confirmed New Zealand had overtaken Australia to be the world's number one Test side for the first time.

"It's hard to beat really," said victorious captain Kane Williamson, whose double century set up the win.

New Zealand batted Pakistan out of contention with a first innings 659 for six, with Williamson's masterful 238 supported by Henry Nicholls (157) and Daryl Mitchell (102 not out).

But there was still a chance Pakistan could force a draw until Jamieson took the ball.

"The most impressive thing is his attitude, his ability to run in and hit the wicket hard for long spells," Williamson said.

In his sixth Test after making his debut against India 10 months ago, Jamieson has taken 36 wickets at a stunning 13.27 average and with four five-wicket hauls to his credit. But he said he's far from being the finished product.

"I'm a long way off the cricketer that I want to be," he said after his man-of-the match performance.

"I'm 12 months into my international career and it's a long process and hopefully I've got another nine-10 years in this group and if that happens I've got more to come."

Pakistan captain Mohammed Rizwan was disappointed with his side's fielding and multiple dropped catches. But he said their biggest problem was Jamieson.

"He's the only difference between both teams. The conditions were fair to bowlers but the way he bowled he took too many wickets in the series," Rizwan said.

"We need to improve in all departments, especially in fielding. If you drop catches you can't win a Test match."

- Extra bounce -

Pakistan resumed the day at eight for one, needing to bat for the better part of two days to salvage a draw, but they were never in the hunt.

Trent Boult had nightwatchman Mohammad Abbas out for three in the fifth over and after that the day was mainly about Jamieson, who recorded his best match performance.

Although he is the junior member of a pace attack headed by higher-ranked veterans Tim Southee and Boult, the 26-year-old has rapidly advanced to playing a senior role.

After Abbas departed, Abid Ali and Azhar Ali looked to be laying the groundwork for a solid third-wicket stand and moved the score to 46 when the 2.3 metre (6ft 8in) Jamieson removed Abid for 26.

After using his height to create extra bounce and force Abid on to the back foot, Jamieson whipped up a fuller delivery and the batsman's attempt to switch to a drive was sliced to backward point where substitute Will Young took a one-handed, diving catch.

In a potent middle session, Jamieson had Haris Sohail and Azhar caught behind, and bowled Rizwan as he moved through his repertoire.

Sohail did not get his feet moving as he poked at a rising delivery on 15 and was caught behind.

Azhar attempted to take the fight back to Jamieson, moving into a short delivery and pulling it through mid-on for four as he advanced to 37.

But Azhar did not add another run as Jamieson responded with a ball that reared up towards the ribs and it was gloved to the wicketkeeper.

Rizwan was bowled for 10 by a full inswinger that zipped between bat and pad.

Boult completed the four-wicket session when he dismissed Fawad Alam for 16 and Pakistan were 134 for seven at tea.

Jamieson, Boult and Williamson shared the final three wickets.

Akhtar has been pretty vocal about Pakistan and world cricket, and after the crushing defeat in Christchurch, the Rawalpindi Express questioned the defensive mind-set of the team while further asking who will take accountability for the team selection.

"Pakistan team will always perform badly when they travel abroad. They will get exposed. The question is if the Cricket Board or the media is responsible for Pakistan team's demolition? Or our selection? Or the mindset that has been going on since 2005 of playing defensively?," Akhtar said in a YouTube video.

The Indian cricket team is looking to win back-to-back Test series on Australian soil with the four-Test series against Australia firmly locked at 1-1. With reports surfacing that India are discontent at the prospect of being forced into hard quarantine for the fourth Test against Australia in Brisbane, Australian captain Tim Paine reckoned that the controversial build-up could raise tensions on the field during the third Test match in Sydney.

Paine conceded that reports stating that India might not turn up to play at the Gabba has started to annoy some of the Aussie players and could result in a high-tension match when the third Test starts at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday.

"I think there`s a bit of tension starting to boil under the surface with a lot of unnamed sources coming out from their camp saying where they want to play the fourth test and where they don`t want to go," Paine said in his pre-match news conference.

"I think it`s starting to grind a few people, so we`ll see how it goes."

India have officially made no statement about the issue and on Monday, Cricket Australia boss Nick Hockley said the fourth Test is scheduled to be played in Brisbane and he has heard nothing from the Indian camp about the quarantine protocols.

However, Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane on Wednesday said that quarantine was "challenging" when life outside in Sydney was "normal". When asked about a potential Brisbane boycott, Rahane evaded the question and said that the "BCCI and team management" will take a final call.

"Quarantine life is definitely a challenge, especially we know that in Australia, in Sydney especially, the life is normal," he told reporters.

"The players are stuck in the room, which is okay. We know how to handle it, we are prepared for any kind of situation. We are not at all annoyed. We know what`s our priority here.

"We are here to play cricket and we just want to do that. Starting from tomorrow, start well in the test match and, as a team, as a unit, we are just focused on playing some good cricket."

On the other hand, Paine said Australia would play the fourth Test anywhere in the world, even Mumbai."When you hear things like that coming, particularly from India, who we know hold a lot of power in world cricket, it`s likely that it could happen," he said.

"But we`re not too fussed. We`re not buying into where the test is being played. As far as we`re aware it is at the Gabba, but as I said in the team meeting the other day, we couldn`t care less.

"If you rang us up and said it`s in Mumbai tomorrow, we`d get on a plane and we`d go and play it. That`s the way we are looking at it."

The four-Test series is nicely locked at 1-1 after India made a cracking comeback in the Boxing Day Test. Both India and Australia would be looking to win the Sydney Test and take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the series.

Starting from tomorrow, start well in the test match and, as a team, as a unit, we are just focused on playing some good cricket." On the other hand, Paine said Australia would play the fourth Test anywhere in the world, even Mumbai."When you hear things like that coming, particularly from India, who we know hold a lot of power in world cricket, it`s likely that it could happen," he said. That`s the way we are looking at it." The four-Test series is nicely locked at 1-1 after India made a cracking comeback in the Boxing Day Test. Both India and Australia would be looking to win the Sydney Test and take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the series.

Quarantine is challenging when life in Sydney is normal: India captain Ajinkya Rahane

Australia and India resume their "arm-wrestle" Test series at 1-1 Thursday after a build-up marred by a coronavirus outbreak in Sydney and concerns over a potential biosecurity breach by the Indian team.

The four-Test series is finely poised after India, crushed by eight wickets in Adelaide -- where they fell for their record low of 36 -- emphatically bounced back in Melbourne.

Spearheaded by stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who is deputising during Virat Kohli's paternity leave, they levelled the series with their own eight-wicket win.

"The first two Tests have been tough cricket, it's 1-1 and that probably shows how close the series is," said Australia coach Justin Langer, describing the series as an "arm-wrestle".

"We are very, very determined to get out of the blocks hard on Thursday."

The series has also been eventful off the field with Sydney, which has raced to contain a new Covid-19 cluster, only confirmed as host of the third Test after the Melbourne game.

The Sydney Cricket Ground has slashed its available capacity from 50 to 25 percent -- about 10,000 fans -- after a public backlash over the potential health risks.

Separately, five Indian players were spotted dining inside a Melbourne restaurant, in apparent contravention of biosecurity protocols.

Australian officials have also played down reports claiming India are not keen on having the final Test in Brisbane, due to stricter quarantine arrangements there.

- Warner set for return -

The weather could affect plans for both teams, with showers forecast for Thursday and Friday.

Run-shy Australia are set to make at least one change, with David Warner expected to return after missing the first two Tests with a groin strain, while fellow opener Joe Burns has been dumped.

Warner's opening partner is still unknown. Will Pucovski has been given the all-clear from a concussion and could make his debut, although Marcus Harris is also waiting in the wings.

If either play, Matthew Wade would drop back to number five with Travis Head facing the axe.

"There's loyalty to all our players. And whatever way we go -- the hardest thing is... it's so hard to fit seven or eight into six," said Langer, when asked about Head.

But he stressed his batsmen must start putting more runs on the board, with the team failing to go past 200 during the series.

"We're addressing the issues. I think we got 200 in that second innings (in Melbourne), but any time you're not scoring over 200, you're looking at ways to improve."

- 'Five good days' -

After Melbourne, India coach Ravi Shastri hailed the team's turnaround as one of the great comebacks of all time, but the euphoria was short-lived.

Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw and Navdeep Saini were all seen dining in a Melbourne restaurant, in what looked like a biosecurity breach.

But India's cricket board has taken no action so far, and after the entire touring party tested negative for the coronavirus on Sunday, the five seem to be clear to play.

That would see Gill, who was highly impressive on debut in Melbourne, pad up again, while the explosive Pant will once more keep wicket.

Sharma only joined the team last week after a late injury-enforced arrival. But he was immediately made vice-captain, suggesting he too will play, potentially in place of the under-performing Mayank Agarwal.

There will be a new-look attack with Umesh Yadav out of the series after hurting his calf and T. Natarajan called up as a replacement. India were already without injured regulars Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma.

Despite this, Shastri said last week they planned to stick with a five-bowler strategy.

He added that the key to their comeback in Melbourne was forgetting what happened in Adelaide, a trait they will take into Sydney.

"To beat a team like Australia, especially in Australia, there is no point having one good day or two good days," he said.

"You have got to have five good days if you have to beat them, as simple as that."

Australia, India resume 'arm-wrestle' as Covid dominates Test build-up

Kane Williamson underscored his ranking as the world's premier batsman with a masterful double century on a landmark Tuesday as New Zealand took control of the second Test against Pakistan.

In between the showers at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, Williamson was in classic form, batting for nine hours 33 minutes for his 238 and leading New Zealand to an imposing 659 for six declared to lead Pakistan by 362.

At stumps, the tourists were already in trouble at one down for eight, with Kyle Jamieson adding to his five-wicket haul in the first innings by removing Shan Masood for a duck.

Should New Zealand win the Test it will confirm their ranking as the number one side in the world for the first time -- to go with Williamson's promotion as the number one batsman -- and keep alive their chance of making the World Test Championship final.

It was a relentless performance from Williamson who became only the second New Zealander after Brendon McCullum to score four double centuries.

He should have been out for 177 on the first ball after the first of two rain stoppages, but as has happened several times in the Test the chance was put down -- this time by Azhar Ali, who earlier in the day had dropped Henry Nicholls short of his century.

Williamson and Nicholls had rebuilt the innings after New Zealand were reduced to 71 for three on Monday's second day.

By the time Nicholls was dismissed early in the afternoon session for 157, the pair had put on 369, the third-best all-time partnership for New Zealand and a record for the fourth wicket.

The day resumed with New Zealand 286 for three, 11 runs in arrears and with conditions favourable for the bowlers who had cloud cover and a ball only five overs old.

But for every plan Pakistan set to dismiss Williamson, he had an answer -- with a range of strokes from silky touches to powerful drives.

Along the way he followed Ross Taylor and Stephen Fleming to become only the third New Zealander to pass 7,000 runs.

The end came for Williamson three overs before tea when he skied a short ball from Faheem Ashraf and was caught in the deep by Masood.

In four innings from three Tests in the past month Williamson has scored 251, 129, 21 and 238.

Nicholls, dropped on 92 and 133, was hampered by a calf strain which left him hobbling between the wickets.

But he was still able to attack, with boundaries producing 48 of his 68 runs on day three, before he top-edged a short ball from Mohammad Abbas and was caught at deep fine leg.

Daryl Mitchell clobbered 102 off 112 balls with Williamson delaying the declaration until the all-rounder posted his maiden century.

Pakistan in trouble after Williamson's 238 gives New Zealand huge lead

Australia coach Justin Langer on Tuesday said David Warner was "very, very, very likely" to play the third Test against India, with Will Pucovski shaping as his opening partner after being given the all-clear from a concussion.

Warner missed the first two Tests with a groin injury, but looks almost certain to return for Thursday's crucial clash in Sydney, with the four-Test series locked at 1-1.

"He looks like he's moving pretty well. He's very determined to play," said Langer. "I'd say he's looking very, very, very likely to play the Test match."

But he added: "He's going to be playing through pain though. It's not so much in the muscle but in the tendon area."

Joe Burns opened with Matthew Wade in the opening two Tests in Adelaide and Melbourne, but after a run of poor scores has been axed.

It opens the door for Pucovski to make his debut after Langer said an independent neurologist had cleared him of any lingering damage after the latest in a series of concussions.

"Will has still got a few boxes to tick today then we weigh up whether this Test match is right, or the next Test match is right. Time will tell," said Langer.

Pucovski, 21, has a long history of being hit on the helmet, and has also dealt with mental health issues.

But Langer said his mind has been put at ease by the neurologists' all-clear on Monday.

"The real heartening thing for him is that while he's had a few concussions in the past ... it's not necessarily going to have any long-term impact on him," he said.

"And I think when you can put your mind at rest with that then that's a real positive for him.

"He's in a great frame of mind, he's incredibly positive about playing cricket, he's trained hard this week and, as he and I have discussed a number of times, the only way to get back on the horse is to get back on the horse," he added.

If Pucovski plays, Wade will almost certainly drop back to his more accustomed number five position with allrounder Cameron Green retained at six.

That would likely see Travis Head dropped.

Langer says Warner 'very likely' to play through pain

The Indian cricket board, the world`s wealthiest of the game, was worth a colossal Rs 14,489.80 crore at the end of financial year 2018-19, having added Rs 2,597.19 crore to its financial might. This is as per the latest balance sheet available, accessed by IANS.

More than half of the Rs 4,017.11 crore the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earned under "income" during the year came from the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) -- Rs 2,407.46 -- as per the balance sheet that is still not in public domain while the accounts of 2019-20 are still not ready.

However, it is pertinent to note that the BCCI is involved in several high-profile litigation cases, with Income Tax department, erstwhile IPL Kochi and Deccan Chargers franchises, Sahara, Neo Sports, and the World Sports Group etc. If all these cases/arbitrations go against the BCCI, it will be in deep trouble and may end up paying through its nose.

During FY 2018-19, the second biggest income of BCCI came from grant of media rights of the Indian team -- Rs 828 crore. At the same time, the BCCI incurred an expenditure of Rs 1,592.12 crore during the year.

The BCCI`s net worth was Rs 5,438.61 crore at the end of FY 2014-15, and at close of 2015-16, the financial year during which it earned a massive Rs 2,408.46 crore, its net worth rose to Rs 7,847.07 crore. Then, the board breached the Rs 8,000-crore mark in 2016-17, taking its net worth to Rs 8,431.86 crore. And in 2017-18, the board added a colossal Rs 3,460.75 crore in just one year to take its worth to Rs 11,892.61 crore. And, now, after the finalisation of the 2018-19 balance sheet, the worth has shot up to Rs 14,889.80 crore.

"As per the Societies Act, under which the BCCI is registered, it should submit its balance sheet within six months of the end of each financial year, besides sharing it with its members (state associations), and the International Cricket Council. Without submitting its balance sheet with the ICC, the BCCI will not get its share of distributions from the world body," a source told IANS.

The BCCI`s net worth includes, amongst other heads, its bank balance, fixed deposits, and fixed assets etc. Of the BCCI`s Rs 14,489.80 crore net worth, as on March 31, 2019, the main sources include general fund that stands at Rs 3,906.88 crore and earmarked funds, which are Rs 3,243.41 crore.

Apart from the IPL, the other main sources of income in 2018-19, according the balance sheet, were the men`s senior international tours/tournaments hosted in India (Rs 446.26 crore), interest from the banks (Rs 290.73 crore), and income from the ICC/Asian Cricket Council (Rs 25.03 crore).

Over the last few years, the BCCI`s income has gone up chiefly because of the sale of the media rights of the Indian team -- bilateral Tests, ODIs, and T20 matches played at home -- the IPL media rights, national team (jersey) sponsor; and series sponsor.

The BCCI`s broadcast rights holder, STAR India, pays Rs 43.20 crore per international match played in India. During FY 2018-19, the BCCI hosted 22 international matches, seven Tests, 10 ODIs, and five T20s ? which makes it Rs 950.40 crore.

STAR India also owns the IPL media rights having made a historic bid of Rs 16,347.50 crore for five years (2019-2022), and this translates into Rs 54.50 crore per match.

The BCCI has a total of seven sponsors -- STAR Sports (broadcaster), Byju`s (team sponsor), PayTm (title sponsor), Dream11, Hyundai, and Ambuja Cement (partners), and kit sponsor (MPL Sports).

Series sponsor PayTM gives Rs 2.42 crore per match; national team jersey sponsor Oppo furnishes Rs 4.61 crore per match, before Byju`s took over (September 5, 2019, to March 31, 2022).

As is evident from the above, the BCCI draws its financial might from players and their performances as a team. India, led by Virat Kohli, have a glamorous team and that too is a big attraction for sponsors, despite the market sentiment down at the moment due to Covid pandemic.

At times, however, the BCCI has struggled to find sponsors. The most recent case is of the kit sponsorship deal with Nike that ended after almost 14 years in September last year. There were not many takers for the vacant premium slot. The board eventually entered into a three-year deal with MPL Sports at a much discounted per-match rate.

BCCI now worth a colossal INR 14,489 crore

South Africa completed a sweep of their two match series against Sri Lanka as they strolled to a 10-wicket win on the third day of the second test on Tuesday.

South Africa knocked off a target of 67 runs without loss as openers Dean Elgar (31 not out) and Aiden Markram (36 not out) saw them to victory at the Wanderers Stadium – with two and a half days of the contest still remaining.

Success in Johannesburg followed a convincing innings and 45-run triumph in the first test in Pretoria last week and turns around a poor run of test form over the last year.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 211 in their second innings, surviving only 95 minutes of Tuesday’s morning session. They resumed their second innings at 150-4 overnight with a tenuous five-run lead but with captain Dimuth Karunaratne not out on 91 and hoping to set the home side an imposing target to chase in the fourth innings.

Karunaratne reached his 10th test century off 123 balls as the visitors began in aggressive fashion, but a misjudged pull shot saw the Sri Lanka skipper top edge Anrich Nortje to be caught by Wiaan Mulder in a major blow to their hopes, just 20 minutes into the day’s play. He was dismissed for 103.

“We wanted to turn the pressure over onto South Africa but unfortunately they bowled really well,” Karunaratne said afterwards.

Niroshan Dickwella, who scored 36, followed in the next over as Lungi Ngidi (4-44) took another crucial wicket, setting off an end to the resistance among the lower order.

Lutho Sipamla cleaned up the tail with three wickets in 12 balls, including bowling Wanindu Hasaranga for 16, to finish with figures of 3-40.

Sri Lanka, who won the toss and elected to bat, scored 157 in their first innings and South Africa replied with 302, with Elgar top scoring on 127.

“We wanted to get the new year off to a good start, and it was good to see our experienced batsmen among the runs as well as our young bowling line-up putting up their hands,” said winning captain Quinton de Kock.

South Africa now look ahead to their first visit in 14 years to Pakistan, where they will play two tests and three Twenty20 internationals later this month, while Sri Lanka return home to host England in two tests in Galle. The first starts on Jan. 14.

Indian player approached by Delhi nurse for 'inside information' during IPL 2020: Report

The Indian cricket team will be looking to end a 42-year wait when they take the field at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 7 for the third Test against Australia. India's last win in Sydney came back in 1978 when a Bishan Bedi-led side defeated Australia by an innings and two runs. However, since then India have had a long wait to taste victory in Sydney.

Out of 12 matches played in Sydney, India have won only one while losing six. India came agonisingly close of winning the Sydney Test in the 2018/19 tour but was left disappointed by rain gods as they forced a draw.

England, Pakistan and West Indies are the only sides to register more than a win in Sydney against Australia with Pakistan being the only Asian team to win 2 Test matches in Sydney.

Steve Smith dominated Test cricket in the last decade but for the Aussie batsman, the last few Test matches have been nothing short of nightmare. Smith, in the ongoing Test series against India, has registered scores of 1, 1*, 0 and 8 as he witnesses a lean patch in his formidable batting career.

With Australia hoping that Smith returns back to his best in the last two Tests against Australia, head coach Justin Langer said that that it is about time Smith returns back to form while adding he never coaches the star Aussie batsman.

Langer said that Smith coaches himself while adding that he is going to work it and get out of the lean patch he is facing in his illustrious Test career.

Smith, who has had a superb record against India, suffered a dip in form after consecutive centuries in the three-match ODI series against India. With Australia looking to bounce back in the series after losing out in the Boxing Day Test, the hosts would be looking towards their talisman - Smith - for big runs.

Langer, in the virtual press conference, said "Imagine how good we will be when he does start batting - that's how I look at it. He hasn't had the best of series so far. He will be the first to admit that. My gosh, what I know about great players, the longer they miss out, the sooner they are coming good again. That puts a big smile on my face. How do you coach Steve? I don't coach Steve Smith. Steve Smith coaches himself and I am sure he is going to work it out."

Langer added, "Steve is always hitting a lot of balls. He did a lot leading up to it [MCG Test] but, again, there is nothing, even for the greatest of players, there is nothing that replaces time in the middle. And we know what a great problem solver he is, we know what a great player he is."

Australia, after winning the Adelaide Test in sensational fashion, was brought back to the earth by a resilient Indian team as they won the Boxing Day Test by eight wickets to equalise the series 1-1. But now both India and Australia would be eyeing an unassailable 2-1 lead in Sydney.

Another injury for Team India! KL Rahul ruled out of Test series vs Australia

A classic century by Kane Williamson in a 215-run stand with Henry Nicholls hauled New Zealand into a strong position at 286 for three at stumps on day two of the second Test against Pakistan on Monday.

New Zealand, having recovered from 71 for three in Christchurch, ended the day trailing Pakistan's first innings 297 by just 11 runs with seven wickets in hand.

Williamson, newly installed as the world's number one Test batsman, was unbeaten on 112, his 24th century, with Nicholls on 89.

It is Williamson's third century in as many Tests in the past month, although fortune was on his side. Late in the day, he was dropped twice and survived a run out when the bail had only partially dislodged in the split second it took to get his bat across the crease.

Pakistan, without a win in 10 away Tests since 2018, would have felt their luck was changing when New Zealand slumped from 52 without loss to 71 for three when Ross Taylor departed in the fifth over after lunch.

It could have been four for 74 when Nicholls was given out early, caught behind, only for the dismissal to be reversed by the TV umpire who detected Shaheen Afridi's delivery was a no ball.

With New Zealand in trouble, Williamson was all patience as he took 70 deliveries to reach 20, but he then put the foot down.

The next 30 runs came off 35 balls to reach 50 and it took another 35 balls to race from 50 to 100.

When Nicholls reached his 11th half-century with a two to square leg, Pakistan were very aware of the consequences of Afridi's no ball when the left-hander was on three.

New Zealand started their innings on a positive note with openers Tom Latham and Tom Blundell in a 52-run stand.

The pitch, although drying, continued to offer the bounce and movement which New Zealand exploited on day one, but with Latham and Blundell taking guard well in front of the crease the Pakistan bowlers were forced to adjust their lines.

The breakthrough came when Faheem Ashraf had a ball jag back sharply and rap Blundell's pads.

In the following over, Afridi found the edge of Latham's bat with the ball flying to Shan Masood who spilled the catch at second slip only for his blushes to be spared by the quick reflexes of Haris Sohail who grasped the rebound from first slip.

It was a period when the Pakistan quicks, having found a good line and length, had New Zealand in a vice-like grip.

In five overs either side of lunch, New Zealand scored only five runs before Abbas found the edge of Taylor's bat and that time Masood made no mistake.

Masood later failed to pouch difficult chances from Williamson on 82 and 107, while Mohammad Rizwan dropped Nicholls on 86.

With the Indian team facing plenty of criticism from the Australian media after five players were placed in isolation for an alleged bio-secure bubble breach in Melbourne, former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha has lashed out at the Australian media as he said that they are trying to unsettle the Indian team after losing the Boxing Day Test by eight wickets.

Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw and Navdeep Saini were asked to isolate after photographs and video of them dining at an indoor restaurant went viral on social media. However, the BCCI has continued to back its players. But some of the reactions coming in from Australian media and a handful of Australian politician have irked Ojha.

"Everybody knows Australians are bad losers. They are not able to take it (MCG defeat) despite five of our main players missing. Indian team is doing so well. They never expected the Indian team to win. They thought they could win, they were taken by surprise," Pragyan Ojha said on Sports Today.

Meanwhile, the entire Indian contingent tested negative for the coronavirus and all the players left for Sydney from Melbourne on Monday.

"Rohit Sharma, he has had a 14-day hard quarantine, before that training at the NCA. I am very sure he is not a fool to come and just breach the protocols. Yes, at times, things look different. I am very sure, they know what the protocols are and they follow them," said Ojha speaking about the whole controversy.

The president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly is likely to be discharged from the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday after the iconic former cricketer suffered a mild heart attack on Saturday.

Woodlands MD & CEO Dr Rupali Basu told reporters on Monday that Ganguly is likely to be discharged from Wednesday and the former Indian captain is keeping well. Dr Basu further said that it was decided that angioplasty for two damaged coronary arteries would be done at a later date after consultation with Ganguly's family members.

“Our nine-member medical board met today at 11.30 am with reputed specialists on zoom platform. The consensus of the board was that deferring the angioplasty, for now, is deemed to be a safer option since Mr Ganguly is stable, without any chest pain and is on optimal medical management,” Dr Basu said at the press conference.

“The family members were present during the board meeting and were explained about the disease process and further therapeutic plan,” she added.

Angioplasty was successfully done on Ganguly's right coronary artery after the 48-year-old suffered a mild heart attack. Dr Basu said the other two damaged coronary arteries, too, need angioplasty but that would be done at a later date with surgery ruled out.

It seems like the comments made by Queensland's Health Shadow Minister Ros Bates' regarding quarantine guideline set for the fourth Test in Brisbane has caused a bit of turbulence in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as the Indian board feels that the team's image has been shown in poor light by the Australia authorities and media.

After such comments, the BCCI is rethinking if it should turn the Border-Gavaskar Trophy into a three-match series and end the series with the Pink Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), scheduled to start on January 7.

A BCCI official, speaking to ANI, said that the comments from Bates should have been avoided with both BCCI standing united with Cricket Australia to ensure that the tour goes ahead without any hitch. The official said that it is hurtful if a public representative doesn't want the team to go and play while adding that the hosts are propagating a view that the Indian team doesn't wish to follow the rules.

"The statement made by the public representative portrays Indians in poor light and let me assure you, we do not want to do anything other than to abide by the rules, and Rohit Sharma`s strict quarantine is a case in point. To try and propagate a view that we don't wish to follow the rules is unacceptable and the tone and tenor, in which it was said seemed rife with hostility and bordered on racism. It is, therefore, not a surprise that a rethink is on the cards.

'Statement portrays Indians in poor light' - BCCI rethinking playing in Brisbane after Ros Bates' comments

Cricket Australia boss Nick Hockley on Monday dismissed reports that the Indian cricket team is weighing a boycott of the fourth and final Test of the tour, in Brisbane, over strict quarantine concerns.

Australian media had earlier reported that the visiting Indian team would refuse to travel to Brisbane if they are to undergo another spell of hard quarantine in the Queensland state.

BCCI "fully supportive" of quarantine requirements in Brisbane: Cricket Australia boss Nick Hockley

Hockley said that the BCCI was “fully across (and) supportive” of quarantine requirements in Queensland.

“We speak to our counterparts at the BCCI daily,” he told reporters in Sydney on Monday.

“We’ve had nothing formal from the BCCI to suggest anything other than they’re supportive ... Both teams have wanted to play the schedule as we’ve set out.”

The third Test of the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to commence at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday after Cricket Australia decided not to move the match in the wake of a fresh outbreak of coronavirus in the city.

Queensland has shut its border with New South Wales but agreed to allow the players travel to Brisbane for the final Test, on January 15, given they undergo strict biosecurity protocols.

However, the BCCI, officially, is yet to publicly support or comment about the Brisbane quarantine plan.

Indian contingent test negative for COVID-19

Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team, including the five players who had breached the safety protocols, tested negative for the virus after undergoing RT-PCR tests.

The players and support staff have been embroiled in controversy ever since five of its members - Rohit Sharma, Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Navdeep Saini and Rishabh Pant - were accused of breaching the bio-bubble after they were pictured having food indoors at a restaurant in Melbourne on New Year's Day, which is against the protocols set in place by Cricket Australia for this series.

Cricket Australia boss Nick Hockley on Monday dismissed reports that the Indian cricket team is weighing a boycott of the fourth and final Test of the tour, in Brisbane, over strict quarantine concerns.

BCCI "fully supportive" of quarantine requirements in Brisbane: Cricket Australia boss Nick Hockley Hockley said that the BCCI was “fully across (and) supportive” of quarantine requirements in Queensland. “We speak to our counterparts at the BCCI daily,” he told reporters in Sydney on Monday. “We’ve had nothing formal from the BCCI to suggest anything other than they’re supportive ... Both teams have wanted to play the schedule as we’ve set out.” The third Test of the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to commence at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday after Cricket Australia decided not to move the match in the wake of a fresh outbreak of coronavirus in the city. Queensland has shut its border with New South Wales but agreed to allow the players travel to Brisbane for the final Test, on January 15, given they undergo strict biosecurity protocols. However, the BCCI, officially, is yet to publicly support or comment about the Brisbane quarantine plan. Indian contingent test negative for COVID-19 Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team, including the five players who had breached the safety protocols, tested negative for the virus after undergoing RT-PCR tests. Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne, ahead of the third Test against India, said that Aussie batsmen must balance aggression with discipline in a bid to fight back in the four-Test series, which is locked firmly at 1-1.

Australia have failed to surpass 200 in either Test so far, against a well-oiled Indian attack which has troubled the hosts on their own soil.

While key batsman Steve Smith has struggled to break the shackle with his willow, other batsmen including Labuschagne have also battled for runs. After dominating Pakistan and New Zealand bowlers on Australian soil, Labuschagne lauded the Indian bowlers but said the hosts need to rise to the challenge.

“They’ve been very disciplined in their bowling and in their plans, with both spin and pace, I think they’ve really held that straight line,” said Labuschagne, who was dismissed for 48 and 28 in the second test in Melbourne.

“They’ve made us face a lot of balls for ... a strike rate of about two runs an over.

“We need to be very disciplined. And we also need to come up with ways to put them under pressure.

“For us, it’s just making sure we keep finding ways to score ... It doesn’t have to be pretty, but we just got to keep grinding and keep fighting away and if we do get in, we’ve got to make sure we get those big scores.”

After Australia won the series opener in historic fashion in Adelaide, India bounced back with an eight-wicket win in Melbourne with Sydney Test starting on January 7. For Australia, veteran batsman David Warner returns to the squad in place of Joe Burns, who has been off-form for a few months now.

“Someone with over 7,000 test runs and averaging near-on 50, he’s a superb player,” said Labuschagne.

“I think he’s in that top calibre of player ... Just his energy that he will bring around the group and his energy in the field will be terrific.”

Thangarasu Natarajan, who was a sensation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, on Friday was included in the Indian squad for the last two Tests against Australia as the 29-year-old replaced an injured Umesh Yadav in the team. Natarajan started India’s tour of Australia as a net bowler and now is part of the Test squad after earning maiden caps for India in T20Is and ODIs against the Aussies.

Natarajan could potentially go onto make his Test debut and become the only player to earn national caps in all three formats of the game, in the same series, despite not being in the original squad. However, as per reports, Shardul Thakur, who replaced the injured Mohammed Shami in the squad, is ahead in the pecking order to be in the Indian playing XI.

One of the most inspiring stories of the year 2020, Natarajan touched new heights with his sensational bowling displays in IPL 2020 for Sunrisers Hyderabad where he scalped 16 wickets with an economy rate of 8.02. His ability to bowl yorkers at will earned him plaudits from all corners.

The Australian batting unit has been central to widespread criticism for their poor run with the willow in the ongoing four-match Test series against India, which is locked at 1-1 after the conclusion of first two Test. The form of Aussie batters has irked former captain Ricky Ponting as he said the hosts haven’t shown enough intent in the Border-Gavaskar series.

While discussing the first two Tests on the ‘Unplayable Podcast’, Ponting said that lack of drives and pull shots from the Australian batsman haven’t helped their cause with the hosts desperately looking to win the series after losing it last time in 2018-19.

“I can count on one hand in Two Test matches how many pull shots have been played, how many drives down the ground have you seen? You can’t tell me there haven’t been short balls bowled or full balls bowled. There have been enough,” said Ponting.

Ponting further took a sly jibe at the Aussie batsmen as he said that the likes of Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane played more pull shots than the hosts have played in the first two Tests.

“We saw today, I know it was a small total and it is easier to go and play your shots, but Shubman Gill & Ajinkya Rahane played more good pull shots than I think Australia have played in the two Tests. For Indian batsmen to do that against our attack & for ours to not, it’ll be a cop-out to just say their bowlers were good,” Ponting further said.
