Member countries came up with a compromise formula, under which EMA's vaccines list was agreed to be used for the green pass that comes into effect from July 01. EMA has listed four vaccines, which are Comirnaty (Pfizer), <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus">COVID-19</a> vaccine Janssen, Spikevax (previously COVID-19 vaccine Moderna), and AstraZeneca's Vaxzevria.

EMA gives out a commercial list and the body is in charge of the scientific evaluation of medicines/vaccines in view of their marketing authorisation in the EU. The AstraZeneca vaccine produced by Serum Institute of India (Covishield) got a license for commercial use in South Asia, Africa, but not in Europe, due to which SII never even applied for the list.

The EU green pass or the Digital Covid&nbsp;Certificate is meant to facilitate safe and free movement during the Covid pandemic within the EU. The certificate serves as proof that a person has been vaccinated against coronavirus, received a negative test result, or recovered from the deadly virus. However, it is not a pre-condition to travel.

EU officials have pointed out, "For the purpose of the Digital COVID Certificate, individual Member States will have the option to accept also vaccinations that have been authorized by the World Health Organization (WHO), such as Covishield."

Each member country is also allowed to use any vaccine that it is okay with. Switzerland has made it clear that anyone&nbsp;who has been vaccinated or who have recovered do not have to produce a negative test even when travelling from countries where the Delta variant is widespread such as India or the United Kingdom. Ireland has listed Covishield&nbsp;as one of the vaccines for travellers coming to the country. Meanwhile, France is "actively working" on allowing Covishield after India raised the matter.

Interestingly, the EU could have used WHO's list of approved vaccines, which included Covishield but it would have implied giving a green light to both Chinese vaccines which the EU is divided on. After that, choose 'Add passport details' and wait till you are redirected to the page which will let you choose which member do you want to make changes for, and then choose the name. After that, carefully add the passport number in the “Enter beneficiary’s passport number’ column and tick the confirmation box before clicking on 'submit request'.

He also pointed out the discrimination the third-world countries have faced by drawing examples between countries that have failed to vaccinate health workers against those nations that are now prepping to vaccinate small children.

To make sure his target can be met, he has urged pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Moderna, SII and others to either give Covax the first refusal on new doses or commit a minimum 50 per cent of their total production to the Covax programme.

"I also call on all manufacturers to give Covax first right of refusal on new volume of COVID-19 vaccines, or to commit 50 percent of their volumes to Covax this year," Tedros said.

He also called on the G7 nations to discuss these targets in their annual summit which is scheduled to take place this weekend.

This&nbsp;development has come even as India has been trying to increase the production of vaccines for its population and for export.

Last month, India received the first few batches of Suptink V vaccines — which will be also produced by Indian companies.&nbsp;

He also mentioned that India is "working with several other countries in the WTO on a targeted and temporary waiver under TRIPS to ensure timely and secure access to vaccines for all".

India and South Africa had given a proposal for wavier on Covid vaccine patent at the WTO which will help in mass production of the vaccines for the world. After the US extended its support to the vaccine waiver, the West has been able to fight its hesitations against this. Earlier in the week, BRICS became the first multilateral block to extend support to the proposal.
