Frank Lampard admits expectations at Chelsea will soar after an expensive recruitment drive ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Stamford Bridge club have spent nearly £200 million ($263 million) as they have brought in on Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Malang Sarr and could add even more new faces.

The former Chelsea midfielder is under no illusions that owner Roman Abramovich will expect improvements on last season.

The club finished fourth in the Premier League to secure Champions League qualification in Lampard's first campaign, but lost the FA Cup final to Arsenal and were thumped 7-1 on aggregate by Bayern Munich in Europe.

"I'm very aware that a club like Chelsea, even though we had a transfer ban, even though the year was difficult, expectations are going to go up hugely," Lampard told The High Performance Podcast.

"And I just have to accept that as part of the job, and try and go about my job as well as I can."&nbsp;

Lampard said he expected a "messy patch" that would challenge his managerial skills, now that the honeymoon period at Chelsea was over.

Chelsea will start their Premier League campaign away at Brighton on September 14.

"I think you have to be understanding that you're coming to the messy patch," Lampard said. "I think our messy patch probably happened actually back end of the season.

"I think we achieved a lot... because nobody expected us to come in the top four. But we lost a cup final, and then we lost to Bayern Munich.

"And it's a bitter taste for me, I go away and I have a bad feel about those games.

"So I understand that those issues and problems will come again. It's just that I, and we as staff, have to double down. We have to work harder."

Several Chelsea players test positive for COVID-19: reports

Frank Lampard has called on the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> to give Chelsea a fair start to next season, saying the September 12 launch date is "too early" for his players.

The Blues lost Saturday's FA Cup final 2-1 to London rivals Arsenal but are still not finished with the current campaign.

Lampard's side take on Bayern Munich on Saturday in the rescheduled second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie, trailing 3-0 from the first leg.

Even if they exit the competition, Chelsea will have just 35 days before the new season is due to begin.&nbsp;

Manchester City are also still in the Champions League, the final of which is scheduled for August 23, while Manchester United and Wolves are involved in the Europa League, which ends on August 21.

It is understood that when Premier League clubs agreed a September 12 start date, it was also clear there would need to be at least a 30-day break for Chelsea and any of the other teams playing in the end-of-season European competitions.

Lampard lost Willian and Ruben Loftus-Cheek on the eve of the FA Cup final to injury and Cesar Azpilicueta and goalscorer Christian Pulisic during the game to hamstring problems.

"Even in a worst-case scenario, we don't go through against Bayern, the 12th feels too early for me for the players to start playing again," said the Chelsea boss.

"The players need a break. That is why we have pulled two hamstrings and had players pull out of the game before this."

Lampard implored the Premier League to make sure clubs start the next season with a level playing field.

"I would like to think the Premier League would look seriously at that," he said.

"Hopefully they give us a fair start next season. We deserve to be (given a fair start) as a Premier League club competing in the Champions League."

Lampard calls for 'fair' treatment for tired Chelsea

Manchester United and Chelsea sealed Champions League places on Sunday as Bournemouth and Watford fell through the trapdoor on a dramatic final day of the longest <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> season.

Liverpool were crowned champions last month but there was much to play for in the final 90 minutes of a campaign that started on August 9 last year and was interrupted by a three-month coronavirus shutdown.

United finished third after a nervy 2-0 win in a Champions League shootout against Leicester, while Chelsea ended in fourth spot after beating Wolves by the same scoreline at Stamford Bridge.

At the other end of the table, Bournemouth and managerless Watford followed already-relegated Norwich down to the Championship while Aston Villa fans breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Leicester, in fifth spot, will play in the Europa League next season where they will be joined by Tottenham, who drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace to leapfrog Wolves.

Wolves still have two routes to qualify for European competition next season -- either into the Champions League by winning the Europa League next month or into the Europa League if Chelsea beat Arsenal in next week's FA Cup final.

<h2>- Chelsea come good -</h2>

&nbsp;

Chelsea required just a draw at Stamford Bridge to seal their place in the top four, but won all three points in first half stoppage time as Mason Mount whipped in from a free-kick before Olivier Giroud slid home.

A top-four finish and a Cup final in his first season in charge is a coup for Frank Lampard, who had to cope with a transfer ban and the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid last summer.

"There were a lot of unknowns when I came in, could we move forward without Eden Hazard?" Lampard told Sky Sports.&nbsp;

"We knew we had lost a massive player. We've a real spirit within the group now and it's a real team effort now.

"Myself and the staff want to improve every time -- the challenge now is to see what more we can do next season."

United, whose form has dipped in recent weeks after they pulled themselves back into contention for the Champions League, were locked at 0-0 at half-time at the King Power Stadium.

But they finally broke the deadlock in the 71st minute, when Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot after&nbsp;Anthony Martial was upended. Jesse Lingard scored late to seal the win.

The result is a huge lift for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose team were 14 points behind the Foxes at the start of the year, but is a bitter blow for Brendan Rodgers, whose side have been camped in the top four for almost the entire campaign.

"I'm delighted," said Solskjaer. "We've come from way, way behind teams and gone past them. We've shown that we've got the consistency, the right mentality. We're building a group and a performance culture here that we can be proud of."

<h2>- 'Incredibly painful' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a strike by Kieran Tierney gave Watford, who sacked Nigel Pearson earlier this month, an almost impossible task at Arsenal.

A Troy Deeney penalty and a Danny Welbeck strike gave them hope but it was not enough and the Hornets were relegated after five years in the top-flight following their 3-2 defeat.&nbsp;

"This is a reflection of the whole year," Deeney told Sky Sports. "Not quite been good enough. Heartbreaking for the people who work behind the scenes and we feel sorry for them."

Bournemouth beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park but needed&nbsp;West Ham to beat Aston Villa to survive.

Andriy Yarmolenko equalised after Jack Grealish's late goal for Villa but the away side held on, sending Eddie Howe's side down after five seasons in the Premier League.

"It's incredibly painful -- we always believed we were capable of a last-minute escape," Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe told the BBC.

An early goal by Harry Kane put Tottenham in front against Crystal Palace. Palace equalised early in the second half through Jeffrey Schlupp but the point was enough for Jose Mourinho's men to finish in sixth position.

Liverpool beat Newcastle 3-1 to finish the season on 99 points -- the second-highest tally in English top-flight history behind only Manchester City's 100 points in 2017/18.

Second-placed City finished the campaign with a flourish, thumping Norwich 5-0 to reach 102 goals with Kevin De Bruyne scoring twice and matching Thierry Henry's record of 20 assists in a Premier League season.

Elsewhere, Brighton beat Burnley 2-1 and Southampton beat Sheffield United 3-1.

Leicester's Jamie Vardy won the Golden Boot with 23 goals, one clear of Aubameyang and Southampton's Danny Ings.

Man Utd manager did not rule out the possibility of dropping the goalkeeper in the final two games left in their Premier League campaign that could determine the club's top-four bid. "Obviously, everyone has to perform. Everyone has a chance every time we perform to stake a claim in the team," he said. "David knows he should have saved the second goal, but that's done now and we have to look forward to Wednesday. "It's hard for a keeper to make amends. David showed his character in the rest of the game with a few good saves." (Inputs from AFP)

Manchester United fans blame David de Gea for FA Cup loss against Chelsea

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he will not rest key players for Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, with his focus solely on their upcoming Premier League clash against Crystal Palace.

United, who are fifth in the standings with 59 points, are behind Leicester City on goal difference and travel to Palace on Thursday looking to stay in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

"The team selection for Thursday is based on Thursday not Sunday. Sunday is irrelevant, it does not come into my head at all," Solskjaer told a virtual news conference on Wednesday.

"There were a couple of doubts before the Southampton game but they all reported fit on the day and hopefully we can give them time now not to leave players out because of injury but there might be one or two fresh legs coming in."

United could be short on defensive options, with left backs Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams in a race against time to be fit.

Shaw twisted his ankle during the 2-2 draw against Southampton on Monday, while his replacement Williams suffered a head injury after colliding with Kyle Walker-Peters.

"Luke has got a swollen ankle, I'll give him as much time as possible to recover, it was a twisted ankle. Brandon cut up his eye. I don't really know, neither of them trained yesterday," the United manager said.

Anthony Martial is in the midst of a purple patch, scoring five goals in seven games in all competitions since the season's restart and Solskjaer was delighted with the France forward's development.

"He's definitely improving and enjoying his football, he's stepped it up this season as an individual and more as a team player, and physically," he said.

"I remember there were talks about our forwards last season being the least active and there were stats flying around but Anthony is now working really hard for the team and he is a quality, quality finisher."

Manchester United not looking ahead to Chelsea semi-final yet: Solskjaer

Chelsea kept up their push for a top-four finish in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> and Champions League football next season with a 3-2 victory at London rivals Crystal Palace on Tuesday thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud, Christian Pulisic and Tammy Abraham.

The visitors took a two-goal lead inside half an hour through Giroud and Pulisic but Palace responded with a Wilfried Zaha goal before the break. Abraham made it 3-1 after 71 minutes only for Christian Benteke to strike back a minute later.

Palace then piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser and in added time defender Scott Dann hit the post while only a last-ditch tackle by Kurt Zouma denied Benteke.

The win took Chelsea up to third, leapfrogging Leicester City who were at Arsenal later on Tuesday, to stand five points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United, who visit Aston Villa on Thursday. Palace stay 15 points clear of the relegation zone.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side went ahead in the seventh minute when former Blues defender Gary Cahill pulled up with an injury, giving Willian all the time he needed to cut the ball back for an easy finish by French striker Giroud.

The visitors doubled their lead 20 minutes later as Willian fed Pulisic on the edge of the box and the American shrugged off his marker Joel Ward to fire a fierce angled shot past goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Chelsea looked in complete control and only a fine save by Guaita prevented Willian from adding a third goal after Pulisic burst through the Palace lines.

Chelsea close in on Champions League spot with 3-2 win at Palace

Chelsea held on to their place in the Premier League's top four by bouncing back to beat Watford 3-0 on Saturday after Manchester United briefly powered past with a 5-2 rout of struggling Bournemouth.

Third-placed Leicester also got back on track with Jamie Vardy reaching 100 top-flight goals in a comfortable 3-0 win against Crystal Palace, while Arsenal dealt a blow to Wolves' Champions League chase by winning 2-0 at Molineux on Saturday.

United's fearsome front four of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood, who netted twice, were all on the scoresheet as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men hit five goals in a home Premier League game for the first time since 2011.

"Confidence is sky high. You get energy and confidence by performances and results and we are getting that at the minute," said Solskjaer, who is feeling the benefits of a 16-match unbeaten run.

"I have enjoyed the last few games to be honest and it is healthy. You don't age as quickly!"

Bournemouth are moving fast in the other direction as they remain second bottom and the Cherries' defensive problems were quickly exposed after they took a shock 16th-minute lead through Junior Stanislas.

Greenwood got the comeback started as he smashed home from Fernandes's pass before Rashford, from the penalty spot and Martial, with a stunning shot into the top corner, scored their 20th goals of the season,

"Mason is one of the best if not the best finisher I have worked with and seen," added Solskjaer. "He is so calm. He knows where to finish if it is on the training ground, here or in his garden at home."

Bournemouth were given hope when Josh King scored from the spot after Eric Bailly handled inside his own box just four minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute.

But there was no stopping Solskjaer's men going forward and Greenwood restored their two-goal cushion with another powerful drive, this time on his weaker right foot, before Fernandes then capped another influential display with a fine free-kick.

Chelsea shrugged off a shock 3-2 defeat at West Ham in midweek with a routine win at Stamford Bridge.

Olivier Giroud was recalled up front and repaid Frank Lampard with a smart finish to break the deadlock before Willian's penalty made it 2-0 before half-time.

Ross Barkley added the third in stoppage time to move Chelsea back two points ahead of fifth-placed United.

"We needed a result after the last game," said Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic. "I think there was an extra bit of energy because of that loss, we wanted to prove a point."

A third defeat in four games since the restart leaves Watford still just one point above Bournemouth and Aston Villa in the battle to beat the drop.

Arsenal kept their hopes of European football next season alive moved by ending Wolves' eight-game unbeaten run in impressive fashion to move up to seventh.

Bukayo Saka celebrated signing a new long-term deal this week by hooking in the opener just before half-time and Alexandre Lacazette came off the bench to seal all three points for Mikel Arteta's men four minutes from time.

"Every game you have no margin for error, we know that we try to win every game," said Arteta of Arsenal's top-four chances.

Defeat leaves Wolves five points behind Chelsea.

Arsenal face Leicester next on Tuesday, but the Foxes go into that game with a much-needed confidence boost after a first win in five games.

Leicester have struggled to score goals of late, but were helped back to winning ways by some calamitous Palace defending for Kelechi Iheanacho to open the scoring and Vardy to tap into an empty net for his Premier League century.

Vardy struck again in characteristic fashion in stoppage time, sprinting in behind before dinking the ball over the advancing Vicente Guaita.

"To get the two goals and the three points is all you can ask for," said Vardy. "We know it's down to us. We are in this position on merit and we have to keep going. If we play like that between now and the end of the season, we will pick up a quite a few points."

Norwich manager Daniel Farke conceded his side are heading for relegation after a 1-0 home defeat to Brighton left the Canaries still seven points.

"It was more or less our last chance to get back in the mix," said Farke.

"After a few losses, we don't have the right to make any fighting messages or to make any unrealistic claims."

Chelsea win holds off rampant Manchester United in race for Premier League top four

Premier League champions Liverpool are the only club certain of their place in next season's Champions League as the teams below them jostle for position and Manchester City await a court ruling.

Pep Guardiola's City, who humbled Liverpool 4-0 on Thursday, should still comfortably finish in the top four, with a 14-point lead over fifth place and just six games to play.&nbsp;

But the outcome of their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, set to be announced in mid-July, will decide whether a two-season ban from European competitions is upheld.

Should City's appeal fail, fifth place would be good enough for the riches of Champions League football next season, and results since the Premier League's restart have tightened the race for a top-five finish.

AFP Sport looks at the contrasting fortunes of four of the contenders.

<h2>Leicester - 55 points</h2>

Leicester have spent most of the campaign in third and were even Liverpool's closest challengers for two months earlier in the season as they strung together an eight-game winning run between October and December.

However, that good work has come undone during a run of two wins in 11 league games, including just two points from a possible nine since the restart against Watford, Brighton and Everton.

Goals have dried up for Brendan Rodgers's men, with Jamie Vardy finding the net just twice in 2020.

Leicester face a tough end to the campaign, with Arsenal, Tottenham and a final-day clash with Manchester United to come.

They also have uncertainty hanging over their heads, with a local lockdown in place in Leicester due to a coronavirus spike.

Saturday's visit of Crystal Palace is still due to go ahead as scheduled but shifting matches away from the King Power Stadium would be a headache.

<h2>Chelsea - 54 points</h2>

Frank Lampard's men were brought back down to earth with a bang in a 3-2 defeat at West Ham on Wednesday after fine form following the restart had them eyeing third rather than looking over their shoulders.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League would be a huge blow to the Blues' ambitious plans for next season after the signings of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, who will add an extra dimension to the Chelsea attack.

However, conceding three times to goal-shy West Ham exposed the defensive problems that Lampard has to solve before turning to the transfer market.

Upcoming games against Watford, Palace, Sheffield United and Norwich give Chelsea the chance to get back on track and they will be hoping to have a top-four finish wrapped up before a trip to Liverpool and a home game against Wolves in the final week of the season.

<h2>Manchester United - 52 points</h2>

United are a team reborn since the January signing of Bruno Fernandes transformed a laboured midfield.

The Portuguese international has since been joined in the middle of the park by a fit-again Paul Pogba to add an extra dose of creativity as the Red Devils have taken seven points from a possible nine since the Premier League's return.

At the back, United have kept 11 clean sheets during a 15-match unbeaten run in all competitions and there is cause for optimism up front too, with 18-year-old Mason Greenwood forming a thrilling front three alongside Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

United also have the softest run-in to go with their momentum, with Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham to come before they face Leicester.&nbsp;

<h2>Wolves - 52 points</h2>

Nuno Espirito Santo's men could be the biggest winners after a three-month break in the season.

Wolves had played 48 games in the first eight months of the campaign due to their early start in the Europa League qualifiers but have come back refreshed.

Victories over West Ham, Bournemouth and Villa have been achieved with the minimum of fuss and without conceding a single goal.

Tougher tests lie ahead but there are few sides better prepared for a high volume of games in a short period without making many changes.

Philippe Coutinho, who is currently on a loan in Bayern Munich has been for sale from the Catalonia side. Many Premier League teams have tried to approach the club to buy the Brazilian Playmaker.&nbsp;

But Bayern's Thiago has urged the Brazilian to permanent his stay in the German club. He said: "I know him well. He’s very good. I’ve seen him play since he was 12 years old.

"I played futsal against him in Brazil and he loved it. He doesn’t think he lacks anything.

"I love playing with high-level footballers and he is a phenomenon. He is a spectacular guy, super hard-working, with an unbeatable technique and incredible definition.

"Players go through good and not so good moments and he is giving us a lot. We hope to have him next year too."

Coutinho was bought in January 2018 on a record £142 million deal to Barcelona. But he struggled to find his form and went out for a loan to Bayern Munich, where he scored eight goals in 15 matches.&nbsp;

German giants are not expected to activate £100 million to purchase the 27-year-old due to being financially hit due to the coronavirus pandemic. This has given Chelsea and New Castle a chance to have their say in the transfer.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was disappointed with the scoreline and he said: “It was a harsh lesson, a reality check for the players of the levels we want to get to,”.&nbsp;

He went on to add: "That's football at this level, the levels of Bayern were fantastic. It was a harsh lesson for the players. It's the reality of the Champions League,"

Lampard blamed this humiliation on their failure to sign players last month: “There’s no point in looking back on anything other than the fact of being real about where we are...we’re now fighting to come in the top four this year because we want to then improve in the summer. We also have to go to Munich and play with a lot of pride in a few weeks. Today was just a clear show that there’s a lot of work to be done and I felt that when I took the job.”

Jorginho will be missing his second leg after a yellow card for arguing with the referee and Marco Alonso's red card left Chelsea manager Lampard fuming. He said: "I learned about the players. We have to show character. They need to use it to positive effect,".&nbsp;

Chelsea has now lost eight matches at their home ground (Stamford Bridge) in all competitions this season. This is the most in a single campaign since 1985-86.

The victory lifts United up to seventh and within three points of Chelsea in fourth, while fifth could now even be good enough to qualify for the Champions League next season pending Manchester City's appeal again a two-season ban from European competition.

However, even United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he had not been impressed by the visitors' performance.

"When you win 2-0 here you are delighted," said Solskjaer.

"Then again I didn't think we played well, particularly with the ball in the first half. We were cumbersome, slow, passing wasn't great but we got the first goal then we hung in there."

Lampard made a bold call before kick-off by again dropping the most expensive goalkeeper in football history, Kepa Arrizabalaga, to the bench in favour of the 38-year-old Willy Caballero.

Batshuayi also started with Tammy Abraham ruled out by injury and Lampard's anger at missing out on a striker in the January window was borne out by a poor night for the misfiring Belgium forward.

But the course of the game could have been very different had Maguire not escaped unpunished for kicking Batshuayi after the two collided in front of the dugouts.

"I know I caught him and I felt he was going to fall on me and my natural reaction was to straighten my leg to stop him," said Maguire.

"I apologised to him and it was nice that the referee saw sense."

Chelsea's sense of injustice increased when Willian was harshly booked for diving as he went down under a challenge from Bruno Fernandes looking for a penalty.

United had not made Caballero make a single save before going in front a minute before the break when Martial planted a brilliant header into the far corner from Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross.

There was still time for Batshuayi to miss another chance before half-time when he skewed wide from a narrow-angle.

The one-way traffic continued at the start of the second period as Mount hit the post and a brave block from Wan-Bissaka deflected Pedro's goal-bound effort behind.

But even when Chelsea did get the ball in the net through substitute Kurt Zouma, the goal was ruled out by VAR for a push on Brandon Williams by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Fernandes was unable to make much of an impact from open play in his second United appearance since a £47 million ($62 million) move from Sporting Lisbon.

However, the Portuguese international is a huge threat from set-pieces and nearly caught Caballero out with a free-kick that crashed back off the post.

Moments later, Fernandes provided his first assist for the Red Devils with a corner which Maguire powered home.

Lampard had seen enough from Batshuayi and handed Olivier Giroud a rare appearance off the bench for the final quarter.

The French striker thought he had given Chelsea a lifeline with a near-post header but was ruled offside after a VAR review.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../premier-league-improving-saints-stun-chelsea- with-2-0-win-at-stamford-bridge-270505">Chelsea</a> made amends for recent defeats at Stamford Bridge by thumping Burnley 3-0 on Saturday with goals from Jorginho, Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi's first in the Premier League.

The hosts looked sharp from the start and won a penalty in the 26th minute when Matthew Lowton caught Willian's legs as the Brazilian raced down the left. Italian Jorginho shimmied in the run-up to send Nick Pope the wrong way from the spot.

Abraham's fellow youth-team graduate Hudson-Odoi made it three home goals for the west London side for the first time in the league this season when he poked in from a cross by captain Cesar Azpilicueta four minutes after the break.

Chelsea strengthened their grip on fourth place with the win, notching 39 points from 22 games to stay five points clear of Manchester United in the race for Champions League places.

Coach Frank Lampard, who saw his young side lose at home to West Ham United, Bournemouth and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../premier-league-its-a-crime-mourinho-rages- against-festive-fixture-pile-up-270511">Southampton</a> in recent weeks without scoring in any of those games, visibly relaxed as the Stamford Bridge fans chanted his name.

"It's one performance at home and the message has to be continuous... but it's a nice example of a standard that we have set," Lampard told reporters.

"I'm not getting carried away. It just feels good, it feels nice to smile in a game and enjoy watching really positive football."

Burnley, who were weakened by injuries and illness to several key players, enjoyed a couple of bright moments in the first half. Jeff Hendrick put the ball in the net in the 18th minute but captain Ben Mee was just offside in the build-up.

Mee came close in the 36th minute but Ross Barkley cleared his point-blank downward header off the line.

Burnley suffered their fourth league defeat in a row and are now in 15th place, just four points above the relegation zone, with coach Sean Dyche noting that his side had made a habit of going on bad runs before reversing their form.

"Last year it swung very quickly," he said. "People killed us off said 'no chance' and then all of a sudden you’re off and running again and we’re eight unbeaten. The mentality has got to stay strong, that's for sure."

Influential Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante was left out of the squad after reporting a hamstring problem after training on Friday night. Lampard said he hoped the problem was only "a small thing but we will have to see how it goes".

Chelsea strengthened their grip on fourth place with the win, notching 39 points from 22 games to stay five points clear of Manchester United in the race for Champions League places. Coach Frank Lampard, who saw his young side lose at home to West Ham United, Bournemouth and Southampton in recent weeks without scoring in any of those games, visibly relaxed as the Stamford Bridge fans chanted his name. "It's one performance at home and the message has to be continuous... but it's a nice example of a standard that we have set," Lampard told reporters. "I'm not getting carried away. It just feels good, it feels nice to smile in a game and enjoy watching really positive football." Burnley, who were weakened by injuries and illness to several key players, enjoyed a couple of bright moments in the first half. The mentality has got to stay strong, that's for sure." Influential Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante was left out of the squad after reporting a hamstring problem after training on Friday night. Lampard said he hoped the problem was only "a small thing but we will have to see how it goes".

FA Cup: Manchester United held by Wolves, Manchester City cruise through

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-improving-saints-stun-chelsea-with-2-0-win-at-stamford-bridge-270505">Chelsea</a> produced a stunning late comeback to beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday, consigning Mikel Arteta to defeat on his home debut as coach of the north London side.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute but Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno's howler handed Jorginho an equaliser on a plate after 83 minutes.

Four minutes later, Tammy Abraham settled a bad-tempered London derby when he turned in the box and drilled through the hapless Leno's legs.

Arsenal, 12th, started with great intensity, forcing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624">Frank Lampard</a>'s tired-looking Chelsea back, until Aubameyang broke the deadlock after 13 minutes with an acrobatic header.

Lampard brought on Jorginho after 34 minutes and changed from a 3-4-3 formation to 4-3-3, as he did on Boxing Day against Southampton, and it helped the visitors find a foothold at a fired-up Emirates Stadium.

Fourth-place Chelsea, who lost five of their previous seven league games, had the better of the second half and when Leno blundered they quickly turned the screw to leave Arteta still hunting for his first win, following a draw at Bournemouth.

After <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-aubameyang-goal-earns-artetas-arsenal-draw-at-bournemouth-270498">Aubameyang</a>'s opener, Alexandre Lacazette came close to adding a second but N'Golo Kante made a vital interception in front of goal.

The hosts showed more spark than in recent weeks but could not capitalise and Jorginho's presence helped Chelsea turn the game around after the break.

"I give credit to the boys, credit to Jorginho," said Chelsea striker Abraham. "In the first 30 minutes they dominated the ball... then this man (Jorginho) comes on and it's a whole different ball game. Him coming on lifted us as a team."

Abraham saw one effort blocked and another saved by Leno in the second half, while Arsenal substitute Joe Willock fired narrowly wide.

Arsenal complained when Jorginho, already booked, brought down Lucas Torreira, but referee Craig Pawson did not issue a second yellow card.

Then with the clock ticking down Leno missed his punch as he tried to reach Mason Mount's free kick, allowing Jorginho a simple tap-in at the far post.

Abraham and Willian broke at lightning pace and combined for the English striker to net the second against a shell-shocked Arsenal, his 12th league goal of the campaign.

For the first time since 1959, Arsenal suffered a fourth consecutive home defeat, across all competitions.

"I'm really disappointed with the result and the way we conceded the goals and the timing of it as well," said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-arteta-aims-to-solve-ozil-issue-as-chelsea-clash-looms-270702">Arteta</a>.

Premier League: I'm really disappointed with the result: Arteta

Arsenal's misfiring <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-arteta-aims-to-solve-ozil-issue-as-chelsea-clash-looms-270702">Mesut Ozil</a> got a boost on Sunday from their new manager Mikel Arteta who expressed confidence in the way the German playmaker was training and performing on the pitch.

The 31-year-old, the club's most expensive player on a reported $458,185&nbsp;a week, was booed off when substituted in a 3-0 loss to Manchester City two weeks ago and threw down his gloves in frustration as he left the pitch.

But when Ozil was replaced on Sunday after 76 minutes with Arsenal 1-0 up against London rivals <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-improving-saints-stun-chelsea-with-2-0-win-at-stamford-bridge-270505">Chelsea</a> - who went on to snatch victory with two late goals - he was given a raucous standing ovation at The Emirates.

"I put him in the team if I see every day that his attitude, his desire and his understanding of what we're trying to do is there and he has the will," Arteta told reporters.

The former Germany international was often left out of the team and sometimes failed to even make the bench under previous manager Unai Emery, leading to frequent speculation that his services were no longer required at the north London club.

However, on Sunday Ozil had one of his best games of an otherwise miserable season in which he has provided just one assist in 10 Premier League appearances.

He helped create numerous attacking moves until his late substitution, something Arteta appeared to appreciate.

"I am hoping that he can sustain that level every three or four days. He's put in everything he has to try to do that. I think his numbers physically have improved so much, and he's willing - that's what I see every day in training," he said.

"I know the ability, I know the player we have there."

Arteta also suggested he was happy to consider picking his team formations to bring out the best in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/chinese-company-pes-deletes-mesut-ozil-from-gaming-service-over-uighur-remarks-269142">Ozil</a>.

"The structure has to help him for him to be able to take everything that he has inside," said the Spaniard. "He needs the team to play in a certain way to facilitate and take his strengths more and more in the game. That's what we are trying to do."

But the manager showed he was prepared to wield the stick as well as the carrot and would happily leave his 2014 World Cup-winner on the sidelines if he lets his performance slip.

"If he's in a better moment than somebody else, I will pick him. The moment that this changes, then he won't play," he said.

Mikel Arteta has backed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-can-censor-ozil-but-cannot-hide-human-rights-violations-against-uighurs-pompeo-268791">Mesut Ozil</a> to make the most of his fresh start as Arsenal's new manager prepares for his home debut against Chelsea on Sunday.

Ozil has become a polarising figure at Arsenal after several seasons of lacklustre performances from the German playmaker.

He was a peripheral figure under former Gunners boss Unai Emery and looked destined to leave the club in January.

The 31-year-old was left out for Freddie Ljungberg's final game as interim manager against Everton after reacting angrily to being substituted in the 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

But Arteta restored Ozil to his starting line-up for his first match in charge as Arsenal salvaged a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-aubameyang-goal-earns-artetas-arsenal-draw-at-bournemouth-270498">1-1 draw at Bournemouth</a> on Thursday.

Former City assistant coach Arteta, who was in the opposition dugout on December 15 when Ozil kicked his gloves having being replaced, has been encouraged by the mentality of the German World Cup winner since he took charge.

"To be fair his attitude in training since the day that I walked in the building has been incredible, and I've seen this," Arteta said.

"I said I was going to give a clean slate to everybody and it was fair as well to give it to him.

"When we did the game preparation and we were watching the opponents, and where we could hurt them, we believed that he could be a key point. And we prepared the game like this, with him.

"He responded, he did what he had to do and we could have put two or three goals because of him in the net."

Ozil antics&nbsp;

Given his previous antics, it was notable that Ozil was substituted without protest 15 minutes from full-time at Bournemouth after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had cancelled out Dan Gosling's opener.

Ozil later expressed support for the methods of his new manager, finishing a tweet with the words "Let's trust the process".

Now <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/new-arsenal-boss-arteta-demands-accountability-from-players-269895">Arteta</a> hopes his faith in Ozil is rewarded with a commanding display in the London derby against fourth-placed Chelsea.

Arsenal are eight points behind Chelsea in the race to qualify for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-final-16-draw-date-rules-possible-scenarios-for-english-teams-and-all-you-need-to-know-268455">Champions League</a> via a top-four finish.

A win against Frank Lampard's side would breathe a little life into Arsenal's fading bid to return to Europe's elite club competition.

And they face Chelsea at an opportune moment after the Blues slumped to a &nbsp;2-0 home defeat to Southampton on Thursday.

It was the latest tepid effort from Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, leading Lampard to again question whether his players have the quality required to break down defensive opponents.

The result was even more disappointing for Lampard as it came just days after Chelsea delivered the best performance of his reign in their 2-0 win at Tottenham.

Callum Hudson-Odoi had been called into the team to face Southampton but, not for the first time this season, the winger was underwhelming.

Lampard retains faith in the 19-year-old, who missed time this season with a heel injury.

"I thought he put in a lot of effort; he was trying things and making runs," Lampard said.

"It wasn't quite coming off for him in the first half, and overall in fact.

"He's coming off the back of a big injury and this is certainly a period where we have to stick with him through that."
