Chelsea v Spurs WSL game postponed due to COVID-19 cases

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea have become complacent after the Blues blew a lead to lose 2-1 at Wolves and suffer back-to-back Premier League defeats for the first time during his reign in charge.

Twice in four days Chelsea have wasted the chance to move top of the Premier League after losing for the first time in 18 matches at Everton on Saturday.

Lampard himself called into question his side's title credentials after a 1-0 loss at Goodison Park at the weekend and believes his players may have got carried away with their unbeaten run.

"Performance is what gives you results. We were playing very well, on a long unbeaten run and then maybe the lads think 'we're playing well'. The minute you think you're playing well, things like this can happen," said a visibly irked Lampard after Pedro Neto broke clear to win the game in the 95th minute.

"If you're not playing well which we weren't tonight, hang on to the 1-0. Play, control the game, and don't allow counter attacks like we did."

There was more evidence that Chelsea are still a team in transition after a £220 million ($294 million) transfer spending spree as two of their big money signings, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, again failed to sparkle.

Lampard's men remain in fifth, three points adrift of Tottenham and Liverpool at the top, ahead of a clash between the top two at Anfield on Wednesday.

Victory was no more than Wolves deserved as they bounced back from two consecutive defeats since losing top scorer Raul Jimenez to a fractured skull.

"We reacted well," said Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo. "I think we were always in the game. We were well organised and second-half we played really well."

<h2>- Chelsea disappoint -</h2>

Other than bursts from Christian Pulisic past the struggling Nelson Semedo, Chelsea created precious little from open play.

Set-pieces caused Wolves more problems as Olivier Giroud headed over when he should have hit the target before Kurt Zouma crashed a header from another corner off the crossbar.

Giroud was razor sharp four minutes into the second-half as he volleyed Ben Chilwell's cross towards goal and the ball slipped through Rui Patricio's grasp and just over the line.

Going behind awakened Wolves and Fabio Silva was denied his first Premier League goal since a 40 million euro ($47 million £36 million) move from Porto by an offside flag.

Wolves had not scored in two games since losing Jimenez to a sickening head knock suffered in a 2-1 win at Arsenal.

But Daniel Podence produced a moment of magic as he twisted and turned inside the Chelsea box to find space for a shot and his effort deflected off Reece James and inside Edouard Mendy's near post.

Chelsea's record signing Havertz had another night to forget. The German international was replaced by Mateo Kovacic, while Tammy Abraham replaced the injured Giroud as Lampard went in search of a winner.

Yet, it was Wolves who looked the more likely winners in the closing stages.

Neto thought he had won a penalty when driving past James, but after a VAR review referee Stuart Attwell overturned his original decision as there was no contact on the Portuguese winger.

However, Neto was not to be denied on the counter-attack deep into stoppage time as he accelerated past Zouma and drove low into the far corner to move Wolves into the top half of the table and within three points of the top four.

Lampard complains of complacency as Chelsea lose at Wolves

Chelsea's unbeaten run was ended by Carlo Ancelotti's Everton in Saturday's Premier League clash. Blues boss Frank Lampard said that absence of wingers Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech left a huge void in the playing XI.&nbsp;

Ziyech sustained a hamstring injury during Chelsea's 3-1 victory against Leeds United this month, whereas, American Pulisic was left out of the side as a precaution.

"Pulisic was uncomfortable during the week so he couldn't play," Lampard told reporters, adding that the congested schedule was taking a toll on the league's attacking players.

"There are muscle injuries all over," he said. "Players who are explosive and at the top end of the pitch are getting injured. Did we miss our wide players? Yes, we did because they're important for us."

Premier League returned to action with just three substitutions per game this season. Liverpool's Juergen Klopp and Manchester City's Pep Guardiola have criticised Premier League for not looking after the players following the switch back to a maximum of three substitutes.

"We want to see these players, but I think this comes back to the issue of five substitutes, which will come up later in the week. It's about player welfare," Lampard said.

Everton midfielder James Rodriguez will miss Saturday's Premier League match against Chelsea with a calf problem he picked up at Burnley last weekend, manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Friday.

Rodriguez has scored three goals and provided three assists in the 10 matches he has started this season and Ancelotti said he could tweak his formation in the absence of the Colombian when his ninth-placed team welcome Chelsea to Goodison Park.

"James had a little problem during the game against Burnley. He had a problem with his calf and wasn't able to train this week. It's nothing special," Ancelotti told reporters.

"I think he'll start to train next week but for this game I don't want to take a risk. We have to look at him... to see if he'll be available to train and play against Leicester (on Wednesday).

"James is a fantastic player for us. But we'll be able to adapt to the fact he's not going to play. We have a good squad and maybe we're going to play a little bit differently."

Ancelotti said captain Seamus Coleman was back in training after overcoming a niggling hamstring issue but the clash against third-placed Chelsea comes too soon for the defender.

Everton will also be without midfielder Fabien Delph who sustained a similar problem to the full back.

Ancelotti said he was looking forward to the clash with his former club Chelsea now managed by Frank Lampard who played under the Italian at Stamford Bridge.

"He's doing really well, before Chelsea, and did well this season and last season... now, he has a fantastic squad and fantastic team," Ancelotti added.

"Our relationship has changed, it was between manager and player and now a relationship between colleagues. I'm pleased to see him again."

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard on Thursday said he is relishing a reunion with the London club`s former boss Carlo Ancelotti, now in charge of Everton, ahead of their Premier League meeting on Saturday.

Ancelotti guided Chelsea to the Premier League and FA Cup double in the 2009-10 season with Lampard one of the mainstays of his midfield and the current Blues boss hailed the veteran Italian manager.

"I was heavily influenced by him as a player and a man. He`s right at the top of managers I worked with," Lampard told a news conference. "He`s had huge success at various clubs. He was a great coach, a great man and I look forward to seeing him."

Everton, beaten 4-0 by Lampard`s side in their last meeting, made a solid start to the current season and led the table before a dip in form saw them slide to ninth place with 17 points from 11 games, six places and five points behind Chelsea.

"The Premier League is unforgiving. They`ve had injuries. It doesn`t change my thoughts on how to approach playing them," Lampard, whose side are also through to the Champions League last-16, added.

"We`re happy where we are but there`s a long way to go. Words aren`t important at this point.

"It was important for us to win our Champions league group and put that away until the new year. Our next four games show how challenging it is. It`s important to focus and understand. We can`t drop our standards."

Lampard added that Chelsea will be without injured wingers Hakim Ziyech (hamstring) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (thigh) for at least two weeks.

Chelsea came from behind to beat Leeds United in front of two thousand fans in Stamford Bridge, the first attendance in nine months due to COVID-19 restrictions extending their unbeaten run to 16 in all competitions.&nbsp;

However, Blues boss Frank Lampard said that there is nothing wrong with supporters dreaming they can win the Premier League title but stressed his players cannot afford to get complacent.

Asked if Chelsea fans are right to consider them title contenders, Lampard told reporters: "There's certainly nothing wrong with the fans thinking that.

"It's great to have them back, their input was huge, the noise huge. You can see how excited they are at the end that we are top of the league," he said.

"My job and our job is to know that it's a long season and the next question is how consistent can we be with this form, how much we can improve, because I believe there is a lot more we can do and there will be a lot of challenges ahead."

Lampard faces a nervous wait to learn the extent of an injury picked up by Morocco winger Hakim Ziyech in the first half.

"It is a hamstring injury which we will find out the severity of in the next couple of days," he said. "It is obviously a disappointment going into this busy period."

Lampard built his squad after spending nearly $295.64 million in the summer transfer window. Despite a rough start, Chelsea have bounced back in form with 16 unbeaten matches in all competitions. Their recent win against Leeds put them on the top of Premier League table.

'Chelsea look like favourites': Jurgen Klopp on who could win Premier League this season

Frank Lampard, who succeeded Maurizio Sarri as the Chelsea boss, is keen on extending his stay in Stamford Bridge.&nbsp;

The 42-year-old manager has just 18 months left on the contract after taking over the reins in July 2019.&nbsp;

Last year, Chelsea finished at the fourth spot sealing a Champions League berth this season. However, the Blues manager is now eyeing Premier League title after spending nearly 220 million pounds in this year's transfer season.&nbsp;

"In terms of my contract, it seems to have flown by, the time I've been here," Lampard told a news conference.

"I knew there were a lot of circumstances at the beginning that were going to make last year transitional and maybe slightly difficult.

"Now I feel like I would love to be part of the long-term plan here. The signings we made in the summer, other than probably Thiago Silva, particularly, were signings for now and the future."

After beating Leeds on Saturday, Chelsea extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 15.&nbsp;

Yet Lampard feels his players need more time to challenge on both domestic and European fronts.

"At the minute, I think we're working towards something and people are getting very excited and mentioning us being in a title race this year," he said.

"I always saw it as a longer plan than that and it might take until next year for us to really challenge, because of the signings, because of the bedding-in process."

The 42-year-old manager has just 18 months left on the contract after taking over the reins in July 2019. Last year, Chelsea finished at the fourth spot sealing a Champions League berth this season. However, the Blues manager is now eyeing Premier League title after spending nearly 220 million pounds in this year's transfer season. "In terms of my contract, it seems to have flown by, the time I've been here," Lampard told a news conference. "I knew there were a lot of circumstances at the beginning that were going to make last year transitional and maybe slightly difficult. "Now I feel like I would love to be part of the long-term plan here. The signings we made in the summer, other than probably Thiago Silva, particularly, were signings for now and the future." After beating Leeds on Saturday, Chelsea extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 15. Yet Lampard feels his players need more time to challenge on both domestic and European fronts. "At the minute, I think we're working towards something and people are getting very excited and mentioning us being in a title race this year," he said. "I always saw it as a longer plan than that and it might take until next year for us to really challenge, because of the signings, because of the bedding-in process." (Inputs from Reuters)

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard keen on extending his stay at Stamford Bridge

Olivier Giroud scored four goals as Chelsea romped to an impressive 4-0 victory at Sevilla on Wednesday to secure top spot in Champions League Group E.

The 34-year-old striker is the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the competition since Hungarian great Ferenc Puskas in 1965 for Real Madrid against Feyenoord.

He is also the first player to net four times in a Champions League match since Cristiano Ronaldo against Malmo five years ago.

"Amazing solo performance from Olivier. Delighted with him, delighted with the team. This is a difficult place to come," Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, the last Chelsea player to score four goals in a game against Aston Villa in 2010, told BT Sport.

Both teams were already qualified for the last 16 before kick-off, but Giroud made the most of a rare start, scoring with his left foot, his right foot and his head to see Chelsea through as group winners, also slotting in a penalty.

"I didn't know until two years ago that you called it a perfect hat-trick, when I scored (a treble) against (Dynamo) Kiev in (the) Europa League, I said 'What do you mean?' It was good, I had good assists though," Giroud said.

"I will try to carry on like that -- to finish the good job of the team and it's always nice to be in the club history and we play football to mark our history, so I'm pleased to help the team to win and to score the four goals."

The France international sent out a message to Lampard, with Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham seemingly above him in the pecking order, by making the absolute most of only his second start of the season.

"Let me enjoy the night and that great win and after that we will rest and we will see what the gaffer's plan is," Giroud said when asked if he was now expecting to start against Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Lampard will now be able to rest players for the final group game against Krasnodar at Stamford Bridge, with his side looking to improve on last season's run to the last 16, where they were well beaten by eventual winners Bayern Munich.

<h2>- Fine finish -</h2>

Giroud wasted little time in putting Chelsea ahead, collecting Kai Havertz's clever pass before cutting inside and bending a fine finish into the far corner in the eighth minute.

Sevilla were left frustrated as they saw two penalty appeals for handball turned down.

In the 20th minute, claims that Christian Pulisic handled were waved away by referee Artur Soares Dias after he checked the pitchside monitor.

The hosts had another penalty shout turned down following a lengthy VAR delay after an Ivan Rakitic free-kick struck the Chelsea wall.

Aside from those nervy moments, Lampard's Blues were the more threatening, with Antonio Rudiger seeing a header cleared off the line before Alfonso Pastor kept out Pulisic's low drive.

The home side started the second half brightly, as Jesus Navas picked out Nemanja Gudelj&nbsp;with a clever pass, but the Serbian international fired narrowly over.

Chelsea doubled their advantage in the 54th minute, though, as Giroud boosted his case for more game time further by latching onto Mateo Kovacic's pass and clipping the ball over the Sevilla goalkeeper.

But he was not finished there, completing his first Champions League hat-trick since a treble against Olympiakos for Arsenal in 2015 with a looping header from N'Golo Kante's cross.

Giroud rounded off a virtuoso display from the spot with seven minutes to play, scoring a spot-kick he had won himself.

Chelsea's heavy spending in transfer window has put pressure on Lampard: Jose Mourinho

Chelsea will not lack incentives to knock Tottenham Hotspur off their Premier League perch when the capital`s most bitter derby kicks off at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The west Londoners have lorded it over Spurs for the past two decades, bagging sackfuls of silverware while Tottenham yearn for a return to their glory days.

Under Mauricio Pochettino Spurs twice finished above Chelsea in the standings, but missed out on the title to the Blues by seven points after an intense race in 2017.

The season before Chelsea finished 10th but even then had the last laugh in a bad-tempered draw at Stamford Bridge that killed the title dream of Pochettino`s team.

Tottenham are again hinting at a title charge and will go into the weekend top of the league after at least nine rounds for the first time since 1985.

That the architect of their resurgence is Jose Mourinho -- the manager once idolised by the Stamford Bridge faithful for delivering three Premier League titles in two stints -- makes it all the harder to swallow for Chelsea.

Apart from a remarkable 6-1 win at Manchester United, Spurs` relatively comfortable run of fixtures led many to suggest they were in a false position. Last week`s 2-0 win over Manchester City changed all that. It was a Mourinho masterclass.

City had more shots and more possession but hosts Tottenham were clinical and the fact tht they left Gareth Bale on the bench spoke volumes for the depth they have in their squad.

"Mourinho wants to win a trophy here. He knows we are capable of winning. We have all that we need to win. He`s the right man to bring us to the trophy," forward Lucas Moura said.

BARREN GROUND

Stamford Bridge has been a barren hunting ground for Tottenham though, with one away league win in 30 years.

Victory for Chelsea would see them leapfrog Spurs, who may have already have been replaced as leaders by champions Liverpool who visit Brighton &amp; Hove Albion on Saturday.

Tottenham have 20 points, the same as Liverpool, with Chelsea in third place on 18 after three successive wins.

Frank Lampard`s side warmed up for the derby with a 2-1 victory at Stade Rennais on Tuesday to seal a spot in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Tottenham are in action 48 hours later on Thursday at home to Bulgarian side Ludogorets in the Europa League which, while being a disadvantage, was dismissed by Lampard.

"He (Mourinho) has got a strong squad and he can make rotations. But if you`re not going to get up ready to attack a London derby, then you shouldn`t be in this game," the Chelsea boss said.

Liverpool will be eager to bounce back from Wednesday`s stumble in the Champions League, when they lost 2-0 at home to Atalanta, as they face Brighton on Saturday lunchtime.

Manchester City host Burnley in the odd position of being as far away from top spot as they are from the relegation places.

City`s defeat at Spurs left them languishing in 13th place with 12 points and a minus one goal difference. Their fightback needs to begin soon and Burnley may be the fall guys.

Burnley`s home win over Crystal Palace on Monday means only two clubs, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United, are still without a victory and they meet at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Chelsea relish chance to knock Spurs off their perch

Jose Mourinho's Spurs, unbeaten in their last eight games, have 20 points from nine matches while Frank Lampard's Chelsea are on 18 points after their 2-0 win at Newcastle.

Third-placed Leicester City (18 points) are at fourth-placed Liverpool (17 points) on Sunday and would go back to the top with a win at Anfield.

Pep Guardiola's City slipped to 11th with United's victory moving them above their local rivals to ninth.

Spurs now fully look like a Mourinho team, solid at the back, hard-working in midfield and deadly on the break and that was enough to beat a City team who have managed just 10 goals in nine games.

Son Heung-min's prolific form continued, the South Korean opening the scoring in the fifth minute with his ninth goal of the season.

A beautifully weighted pass from Tanguy Ndombele picked out Son's perfectly timed run and the striker kept his cool to slip the ball through the legs of the advancing Ederson.

Harry Kane for Spurs and Aymeric Laporte for City both had goals disallowed before substitute Giovani lo Celso settled the match just 35 seconds after coming off the bench.

While Mourinho will have been delighted to have put one over on Guardiola, who he jousted with during his time in Spain when he coached Real Madrid and his rival was in charge of Barcelona, he wasn't getting carried away by the table.

"We are not fighting for the title, we are just fighting to win every match," said the Portuguese coach.

THIRD WIN

At St James' Park an own goal by Federico Fernandez and Tammy Abraham’s second-half effort secured a third straight win for Chelsea.

The Blues took the lead in the 10th minute when Fernandez, under pressure from Ben Chilwell, turned in Mason Mount’s cross.

Isaac Hayden wasted a great chance to equalise on the hour but Timo Werner burst through on goal before passing to Abraham to double Chelsea’s lead.

"We put the game away with a professional performance," Lampard said. "The result is key because the Premier League is tough and relentless."

A twice-taken penalty from Bruno Fernandes gave United a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion, their first Premier League win at Old Trafford this season.

Fernandes’s first effort was saved by West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone but the referee ordered the kick be re-taken after ruling the keeper had come off his line and the Portuguese midfielder made no mistake with the second attempt.

Winless West Brom’s frustration was doubled by the fact that the penalty came eight minutes after they had a spot-kick award overturned after review.

Brighton &amp; Hove Albion won at Aston Villa for the first time with an enthralling 2-1 victory.

Solly March grabbed the winner with a lovely finish after Ezri Konsa’s equaliser had cancelled out Danny Welbeck's first goal for Brighton, a clever chip.

There was late drama, however, when Brighton full back Tariq Lamptey was sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time and Villa had a penalty overturned after the referee rescinded his decision having viewed the monitor.

From Chelsea to Manchester City: Premier League giants wish everyone a 'Happy Diwali'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described the scheduling of Manchester United's match against Everton on Saturday as an "absolute joke" as Chelsea pummelled Sheffield United 4-1 to climb to third in the Premier League.

United eased the pressure on their under-fire manager with a 3-1 win in the early kick-off at Goodison Park but the Norwegian vented his fury at league chiefs after picking up fresh injuries.

Crystal Palace beat Leeds 4-1 to make it three defeats in four for Marcelo Bielsa's men before Frank Lampard's Chelsea came from behind thump Sheffield United by the same scoreline.

The main focus on Saturday was on whether United could bounce back after successive defeats, which raised fresh doubts over Solskjaer's position at the club.

United only returned from their embarrassing Champions League loss against Istanbul Basaksehir in the early hours of Thursday yet had to kick off at Goodison Park at 12:30 pm on Saturday.

Bruno Fernandes scored twice and new signing Edinson Cavani opened his account as United came from behind to beat the early-season pacesetters.

But Solskjaer blamed the quick turnaround for injuries to Luke Shaw (hamstring), Victor Lindelof (back) and Marcus Rashford (shoulder).

"How can you expect players to perform to the best of their ability when you send them out at 12:30? Absolute joke," he said.

"Our players were set up to fail today with the schedule," he added. "I pushed my club to really fight the kick-off time on this one to give us at least half a chance but it was quashed."

United, who started the match a lowly 15th in the table, showed grit and style as they recovered from going behind to a Bernard goal in the 19th minute.

Fernandes was the standout player for the 20-times champions, thriving in a creative midfield role in the absence of the benched Paul Pogba.

The Portuguese powered a header from a Luke Shaw cross past a flailing Jordan Pickford and scored again when an intended cross for Rashford was missed by the England international and the ball crept in off the far post.

Former Paris Saint-Germain striker Cavani made the points safe with a goal deep into stoppage time.

The victory at the home of Carlo Ancelotti's team was United's seventh straight Premier League away win -- in sharp contrast to their woeful home form.

Everton, who topped the Premier League table earlier this season, have now suffered three consecutive league defeats.

<h2>- Chelsea romp -</h2>

Chelsea have hit their stride after their expensive summer rebuild and are now just one point behind Southampton and Liverpool, who play Manchester City on Sunday.

Lampard's team, now unbeaten in six Premier League matches, went behind early at Stamford Bridge when David McGoldrick's neat flick put Sheffield United in front.

But they hit back quickly, with England forward Tammy Abraham slotting home from Mateo Kovacic's cutback, and Ben Chilwell put Chelsea in front just past the half-hour.

Brazilian veteran Thiago Silva bagged his first Chelsea goal to put the Blues 3-1 up before Timo Werner blasted past Aaron Ramsdale to put the home side in total control.

"We are third," a delighted Lampard told Sky Sports. "The players are the ones who deliver and deserve that first credit. They were amazing, all of them today. The balance of the team was good and it's nice to see. We must continue. I really enjoyed watching it but I know how football is."

Leeds' fine start to their first top-flight season after a 16-year absence is fading fast as they conceded four for the second time in a week at Crystal Palace.

Goals from Scott Dann and Eberechi&nbsp;Eze gave Palace a 2-0 lead before Patrick Bamford pulled one back. But an own goal from Leeds winger Helder Costa restored the home side's two-goal cushion and Jordan Ayew completed the rout in the second half.

There was late drama as West Ham beat Fulham 1-0 at the London Stadium.

Tomas Soucek scored the only goal in stoppage time, but the Hammers were grateful to a shocking penalty miss from Ademola Lookman with the last kick of the game to take all three points.

Lookman tried a 'Panenka' but scuffed his shot and Lukasz Fabianski had time to get back to his feet and save.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described the scheduling of Manchester United's match against Everton on Saturday as an "absolute joke" as Chelsea pummelled Sheffield United 4-1 to climb to third in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described the scheduling of Manchester United's match against Everton on Saturday as an "absolute joke" as Chelsea pummelled Sheffield United 4-1 to climb to third in the Premier League. United eased the pressure on their under-fire manager with a 3-1 win in the early kick-off at Goodison Park but the Norwegian vented his fury at league chiefs after picking up fresh injuries. Crystal Palace beat Leeds 4-1 to make it three defeats in four for Marcelo Bielsa's men before Frank Lampard's Chelsea came from behind thump Sheffield United by the same scoreline. The main focus on Saturday was on whether United could bounce back after successive defeats, which raised fresh doubts over Solskjaer's position at the club. United only returned from their embarrassing Champions League loss against Istanbul Basaksehir in the early hours of Thursday yet had to kick off at Goodison Park at 12:30 pm on Saturday. Bruno Fernandes scored twice and new signing Edinson Cavani opened his account as United came from behind to beat the early-season pacesetters. But Solskjaer blamed the quick turnaround for injuries to Luke Shaw (hamstring), Victor Lindelof (back) and Marcus Rashford (shoulder). "How can you expect players to perform to the best of their ability when you send them out at 12:30? Absolute joke," he said. "Our players were set up to fail today with the schedule," he added. "I pushed my club to really fight the kick-off time on this one to give us at least half a chance but it was quashed." United, who started the match a lowly 15th in the table, showed grit and style as they recovered from going behind to a Bernard goal in the 19th minute. Fernandes was the standout player for the 20-times champions, thriving in a creative midfield role in the absence of the benched Paul Pogba. The Portuguese powered a header from a Luke Shaw cross past a flailing Jordan Pickford and scored again when an intended cross for Rashford was missed by the England international and the ball crept in off the far post. Former Paris Saint-Germain striker Cavani made the points safe with a goal deep into stoppage time. The victory at the home of Carlo Ancelotti's team was United's seventh straight Premier League away win -- in sharp contrast to their woeful home form. Everton, who topped the Premier League table earlier this season, have now suffered three consecutive league defeats. - Chelsea romp - Chelsea have hit their stride after their expensive summer rebuild and are now just one point behind Southampton and Liverpool, who play Manchester City on Sunday. Chilwell has been a recent signing for the Blues, he came from Leicester on a five-year contract. The player himself has been a victim of low confidence last season and said that he wanted to inspire others facing similar issues to open up.&nbsp;

“I didn't talk to anyone and just kept it to myself for a few months,” the England defender told BBC.&nbsp;

“Last season I struggled with confidence and the fact that I've spoken about it might help others to talk to people about their problems.

“Mental health is massive at the moment... There's someone at the club who talks to the players. I just thought... I should just go and have a chat with him and see what it's about, and it helped me a lot,” he added.

“If you are struggling and you feel like you're by yourself then talk to someone, whether that's a friend, a family member or something confidential like on a helpline, then just do it,” he said.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard praised the team`s collective effort to shore up their defence but said players must guard against complacency when they host Sheffield United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Lampard`s side leaked nine goals in their opening five league games but have since kept five straight clean sheets in all competitions, which included a goalless league draw at Manchester United and a 3-0 win over Stade Rennais in the Champions League.

"There`s always different parts to it," Lampard told a news conference on Friday. "Individuals have made good performances in that period. The collective is a reflection of that.

"It`s driven by the players, always will be. We must never relax. It`s such an important part of the game."

Lampard said Chelsea have found a fresh balance in the team with new signings Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech being among the goals in their last three victories.

"There`s a versatility in the way new players play," Lampard added. "We had a slight change in formation and the 4-3-3 worked well recently."

Lampard confirmed winger Christian Pulisic remains unavailable for the game at Stamford Bridge due to a hamstring injury.

Midfielder Kai Havertz is ruled out as he self-isolates after a positive COVID-19 result, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (shoulder) is available though the Spaniard is still feeling some pain, the manager added.

Chelsea are seventh in the league with 12 points from seven games, while Sheffield United are second-bottom after a winless start.

Chelsea's Lampard hails defensive improvement but says no time to relax

Diogo Jota capped Liverpool's dramatic fightback as the Premier League champions beat West Ham 2-1 to move three points clear at the top, while Manchester City and Chelsea both won to keep in touch with the leaders on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's side were rocked by Pablo Fornals' early strike at Anfield as the West Ham midfielder punished a poor header from Joe Gomez in the 10th minute.

The Reds drew level in the 42nd minute when Mohamed Salah was fouled by Arthur Masuaku and the Egyptian stepped up to convert the penalty for his eighth goal of the season.

Liverpool thought they had claimed the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining when substitute Jota turned in a loose ball.

Jota had pounced after Lukasz Fabianski saved Sadio Mane's shot but after a lengthy delay that saw referee Kevin Friend make use of the pitchside monitor, the goal was ruled out for a foul by the Senegal winger.

In the 85th minute, Jota ran onto Xherdan Shaqiri's pass to score his fourth goal since joining from Wolves in September.

It was Liverpool's fourth successive victory since influential defender Virgil van Dijk was sidelined for several months with a serious knee injury suffered against Everton.

Despite their defensive issues this term, Liverpool have opened up a three-point lead over second placed Everton, with their Merseyside rivals in action at Newcastle on Sunday.

"It's not about shining, or flying, or whatever, it's about hard work. That was absolutely necessary against this opponent," Klopp said after Liverpool equalled their club record of 63 home league games unbeaten.

"We had a lot of good football, not 500 chances or whatever but enough. I want to see us dig in and we did that, and I'm so happy."

While Liverpool were completing their win, government officials confirmed the Premier League could continue despite a new national lockdown that will last until at least December.

"The world is in a difficult place and we are happy to be allowed to play football," Klopp said.

Title rivals City have yet to hit the free-scoring form of Pep Guardiola's side at their best, as for the third consecutive league game they were held to a solitary goal.

But Kyle Walker's long-range strike against his former club was good enough to earn a 1-0 win at goal-shy Sheffield United.

It was his first goal for a year in his 100th Premier League appearance for City.

A fourth win in five games in all competition edges City up to eighth, five points behind Liverpool.

And there was another boost for City after the game as Guardiola ruled out a return to Barcelona despite interest from presidential candidates at the Catalan giants to bring the club's most successful ever coach back to the Camp Nou.

"I said many times, my period as a manager in Barcelona is over," said Guardiola, whose contract at the Etihad expires at the end of the season.

"I am incredibly happy here, still I have the desire to do well and this is the most important thing."

<h2>- Chelsea hit their stride -</h2>

Chelsea are also finding their form after a slow start to the season as Frank Lampard's men ran out 3-0 winners at Burnley to stretch their unbeaten run to nine games.

Hakim Ziyech was handed his first Premier League start after scoring in a 4-0 Champions League win away to Krasnodar in midweek and the Moroccan's shot wrong-footed Nick Pope to open the floodgates for the visitors on 26 minutes.

Kurt Zouma's bullet header then doubled Chelsea's advantage from Mason Mount's corner just after the hour mark.

Timo Werner was due to be rested until an injury in the warm-up to Christian Pulisic forced the German international into Lampard's line-up.

And Werner rounded off an excellent second-half performance from the Blues with a fine finish from Ziyech's pass.

After much criticism of his side's defending, Lampard will be equally delighted at a fourth straight clean sheet as Chelsea moved up to fourth place.

Jota caps Liverpool fightback as Man City, Chelsea win

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said he expects Hakim Ziyech to prove his value after the Moroccan star scored his first goal for the club in Wednesday's 4-0 win away to Krasnodar in the Champions League.

Jorginho missed a penalty for Chelsea but Callum Hudson-Odoi put the Blues in front before half-time after a mistake by Krasnodar goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.

Timo Werner smashed in a spot-kick on 76 minutes to double Chelsea's lead, with Ziyech and Christian Pulisic adding late goals in Russia.

"Hakim Ziyech has worked really hard to be fit, and I was very excited to get his quality in the team," said Lampard.

"I thought his performance was very, very good when you consider he hasn't started a match since March, when the Dutch league finished."

Ziyech joined from Ajax for a reported £37 million ($48 million) in the summer but missed the beginning of the season with a knee problem.

The 27-year-old had made three cameos as a substitute before earning his first start in Krasnodar -- a journey of some 3,500 kilometres from London.&nbsp;

"It's been frustrating for him and for us. His injury has meant he hasn't been able to start, but what I've seen in training and what I knew we were signing is a player of immense quality with personality to receive the ball and find assists and goals," said Lampard.

"We saw a lot of glimpses of that today, and he will get better.

"We brought him in to do a job, maybe people have forgotten a bit because we signed him in January and he missed the start of the season, but tonight he showed he is here."

Chelsea moved up to four points at the top of Group E after two matches, level with Sevilla who beat Rennes 1-0 in Spain.

<h2>- Safonov gifts opener -</h2>

Antonio Rudiger made his first appearance of the season for Chelsea, lining up alongside Kurt Zouma in central defence as Thiago Silva was rested.&nbsp;

Krasnodar drew their opening game of the group in Rennes last week, and Daniil Utkin forced Edouard Mendy to dive full-length to tip behind his curling shot inside five minutes.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty when Werner was clipped by Brazilian defender Kaio, but Jorginho's effort hit the post and bounced off Safonov before Krasnodar scrambled clear.

Hudson-Odoi made the most of his opportunity playing behind Werner, and benefitted from a goalkeeping error to break the deadlock on 37 minutes.

The England international's low drive looked routine for Safonov, who was excellent in Krasnodar's opening game, but the Russia Under-21 'keeper allowed the ball to slip through his grasp.

Yuri Gazinski struck the bar for Krasnodar as he volleyed into the ground at a corner 10 minutes into the second half.

Chelsea then earned a second penalty when Aleksandr Martynovich was harshly penalised for a handball as he sought to block an attempt from Pulisic.

With Jorginho having been substituted, Werner took over spot-kick duties and lashed the ball beyond Safonov.

Krasnodar were only able to name five outfield players on the bench, Magomed Suleymanov the oldest among them at just 20.

The visitors took advantage of their tiring opponents as some Pulisic trickery allowed Werner to lay off to Ziyech, who tucked a neat finish beyond a crowd of defenders.

Pulisic delivered a fourth in the final minute when he combined with Tammy Abraham before shooting through the legs of Safonov.

Marcus Rashford was again the star for Manchester United in the Champions League with a hat-trick in a 5-0 thumping of RB Leipzig on Wednesday as Barcelona put their off-field troubles to one side to win 2-0 away to a Juventus side deprived of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rashford's late goal earned United a 2-1 victory away to Paris Saint-Germain last week and at Old Trafford the England striker came on as a second-half substitute and scored three times from the 74th minute on in what was a fine win against last season's semi-finalists.

Paul Pogba released Mason Greenwood to open the scoring in the first half, before the youngster made way for Rashford after the break and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side ran away with the game to make it two wins from two in Group H.

Anthony Martial also netted from the penalty spot as United ruthlessly exposed the side who currently top the German Bundesliga and went clear at the top of the section.

"We looked dangerous throughout and that we could score every time we went forward," said Rashford. "It was a real team performance."

Meanwhile PSG got their campaign up and running by beating Istanbul Basaksehir 2-0 in Turkey, although they lost Neymar to an adductor injury in the first half.

Both PSG's goals were scored in the second half by Moise Kean, the on-loan Everton striker heading in Kylian Mbappe's corner in the 64th minute and then turning to fire in the second late on.

<h2>- Barca bounce back -</h2>

In Italy Barcelona bounced back from their weekend defeat in the Clasico against Real Madrid and shut out the boardroom crisis which led to president Josep Maria Bartomeu resigning on Tuesday.

Ronald Koeman's side had luck on their side as they took the lead through a deflected Ousmane Dembele strike and then saw Alvaro Morata have three goals disallowed for offside for the hosts.

The absence of Ronaldo because of a positive coronavirus test meant no chance to see him renew his on-field rivalry with Lionel Messi, but the Argentine got his name on the scoresheet late on, netting a stoppage-time penalty to seal Barca's second victory in as many Group G outings.

"This was our best game all season," said Koeman.&nbsp;

"The team reacted well, despite the resignation of the president. We were focused on the football because all the other stuff is not our responsibility."

Juve had Turkish defender Merih Demirel sent off late on as their underwhelming start to the season under novice coach Andrea Pirlo continued.

Their next game is away at Ferencvaros, who came from behind to draw 2-2 with 10-man Dynamo Kiev in Budapest.

&nbsp;

Viktor Tsygankov's penalty and a Carlos de Pena effort had the Ukrainians in control but they then had captain Sergiy Sydorchuk sent off and the hosts -- with a sizeable crowd behind them -- took full advantage.

Tokmac Nguen pulled one back and Ivorian Franck Boli scrambled in a stoppage-time leveller for the Hungarians.

In Group E Chelsea were comprehensive 4-0 winners away to Krasnodar in Russia, with Jorginho missing a penalty before Callum Hudson-Odoi opened the scoring.

Timo Werner smashed in a spot-kick on 76 minutes to double Chelsea's lead, with Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic adding late goals.

For Ziyech it was a first Chelsea goal on his first start since signing from Ajax for £37 million ($48 million).

"We brought him in to do a job, maybe people have forgotten a bit because we signed him in January and he missed the start of the season, but tonight he showed he is here," said Chelsea boss Frank Lampard of Ziyech, who has struggled with injury.

Sevilla beat Rennes 1-0 in the same section with Luuk de Jong scoring the only goal.

Borussia Dortmund claimed their first points in Group F with Jadon Sancho's 78th-minute penalty and Erling Braut Haaland's stoppage-time strike securing a 2-0 win over Zenit Saint-Petersburg.

The Germans are a point behind Lazio and Club Brugge, who drew 1-1 in Belgium with a Hans Vanaken penalty securing a draw for the hosts.

Lazio had travelled without a host of players due to coronavirus, including star striker Ciro Immobile, but had gone in front early on through Joaquin Correa.

Rashford stars again for Man Utd in Champions League as Barcelona beat Juventus

Frank Lampard admitted he was happy to take a point and a clean sheet from Chelsea's goalless Champions League opener against Sevilla after so much criticism of his side's defensive capabilities.

Edouard Mendy returned from injury to replace the error-strewn Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal, but the Senegal international was rarely troubled in an uninspiring match far from the chaos that has characterised the early weeks of the Premier League season.

Chelsea have contributed to that with two 3-3 draws in their opening five games, including at home to Southampton on Saturday when they blew the lead twice.

But Lampard pointed to personnel issues in getting many of his signings from a &nbsp;£220 million ($284 million) spending spree on the pitch together for Chelsea's slow start to the season.

The Blues have now won just two of their opening six games of the campaign, but looked far more solid with Thiago Silva back in the side as one of five new signings in the starting line-up.

"He was very good today. He brought quality and experience and affected others around him and that was a big part of us getting a clean sheet," Lampard said of the veteran Brazilian centre-back.

"We are going to get better. We haven't had the personnel in there playing regularly, the more we do that, we'll get better."

With Champions League debutants Rennes and Krasnodar making up Group E, both sides were happy to settle for a point against what they will perceive as their toughest opponents in the section.

"It was cagey," added Lampard. "Two pretty good teams cancelling each other out in the first game, which is understandable. We take the point and move on."

Sevilla were without highly-rated centre-back Jules Kounde, who attracted interest from Manchester City last month, due to a coronavirus infection.

However, the organised defensive structure that saw Julen Lopetegui's men beat Manchester United and Inter Milan to win Sevilla's sixth Europa League title in August kept Chelsea's expensive collection of attacking stars quiet.

Timo Werner was the Blues' biggest threat, but the Germany forward wasting his best chance by skewing a shot wide with the last action of the first-half.

Chelsea posed a greater attacking threat after half-time as Christian Pulisic came alive after the US attacker was switched onto the left flank.

Pulisic's run won the corner which produced the home side's best chance of the night, but centre-back Zouma placed his header straight at Bono.

"The last little bit wasn't there today," said Lampard. "We've scored a lot of goals in the Premier League already this season and we will score goals.

"Today the bonus is the clean sheet. It's a long season and we are in the early stages of it."

Joan Jordan came within inches of winning the game in spectacular style for Sevilla as his sweetly struck volley from the edge of the box dipped onto the roof of the net.

But Lopetegui was happy to settle for a draw against a side that has spent more in one transfer window than Sevilla's entire turnover for last season.

“I'm happy with the job we did and the mentality and personality we showed at a difficult place to come," said Lopetegui. "Against a team who spent 250 million euros this summer and with good players in every position, it required a big collective effort."

Lampard comforted by clean sheet in Sevilla stalemate

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham apologised after a video emerged where he was seen attending a party with his English teammates Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho in an apparent breach of national coronavirus rules.

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham apologised after a video emerged where he was seen attending a party with his English teammates Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho in an apparent breach of national coronavirus rules. IN PICS| UEFA awards: Bayern Munich players dominate the winners' list According to the video published by The Sun newspaper, three players are seen gathering in London with more than six people present on Saturday. This video comes a month after Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood were sent home for breaching Covid-19 protocols while with Gareth Southgate's England squad in Iceland. The Sun reports that the FA has seen footage of the party and quotes a spokesman as saying: "There will be no change to the England team at this stage." England is set to face Wales on Thursday and Nations League matches against Belgium and Denmark. Chelsea pair Abraham and Chilwell and Borussia Dortmund's Sancho are all in the 30-man group. According to reports, the party was organised as a surprise gathering for Abraham's 23rd birthday. The forward has apologised, telling the newspaper: "I arrived home to find a small surprise gathering. "Though I was totally unaware this was planned, I would like to wholeheartedly apologise for the naivety shown for the organisation and attending of this gathering. "All I can do now is learn from it, apologise to everyone and ensure it never happens again." (Inputs from AFP)

Abraham apologises after video emerges of players 'flout' virus rules at party

Frank Lampard warned Tammy Abraham to respect the "rules" after the Chelsea striker argued with Cesar Azpilicueta over who should take a penalty in Saturday's 4-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace.

With Chelsea leading 3-0 in the second half, Abraham wanted to take the Blues' second penalty of the match instead of Jorginho, who is the team's spot-kick expert and had already scored one just minutes earlier.

Abraham and Timo Werner discussed who should have it before Chelsea captain Azpilicueta intervened in a briefly heated debate.

He took the ball out of Abraham's hands and gave it to Jorginho, prompting a dismissive wave from the striker.

But Jorginho scored again to prove Azpilicueta's point before Chelsea boss Lampard made it clear to Abraham that he had been in the wrong.

"It's been dealt with. I want leaders and I don't mind a little bit of conflict. If Tammy wanted to take it because he wants a goal or whatever it was then he can get put in his place a little bit," Lampard said.

"I appreciate his eagerness because his performance deserved a goal but the rules are you don't jump up ahead of the list at any moment. So, dealt with."

Abraham's outburst, fuelled by his desire to score his first league goal this season, couldn't overshadow Lampard's pleasure as Chelsea got back on track.

Hampered by a heel injury, Ben Chilwell had a delayed start to his first season with Chelsea following his £50 million ($64 million) move from Leicester in August.

But the England left-back is making up for lost time after delivering an influential performance in his third game following a pair of League Cup outings.

While Lampard has invested in a host of attacking talent since the end of last season, here it was Chilwell efforts that broke down Palace's stubborn defence at Stamford Bridge.

Chilwell's thumping finish put Chelsea ahead soon after half-time and he provided the assist for Kurt Zouma's header as the Blues doubled their lead.

Jorginho's penalty double ensured Chelsea would bounce back from their midweek League Cup defeat against Tottenham and end a run of two successive league games without a win.

The defensive blunders that contributed to their 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion were erased and, crucially, Lampard's men found their cutting edge against defensive opponents.

"Not too many put four past Crystal Palace. We just needed to up the urgency of our game. We needed to get Ben Chilwell into the game," Lampard said.

We couldn't allow Palace's back four to say dealing with Chelsea's front line was easy.

"Ben Chilwell was fantastic today. His ability to be so high up the pitch, and that's not a bad thing, and his great quality on the ball."

<h2>Knockout blow&nbsp;</h2>

Lampard makes six changes to the side that fell three goals down at West Brom last weekend.

With the experienced Azpilicueta and Jorginho back in the starting line-up, Chelsea looked more stable and mature.&nbsp;

The first half followed a familiar pattern for Chelsea, who often dominated games without applying the knockout blow last season.

But this time they had the solution as the lively Chilwell finally broke the deadlock in the 50th minute.

Palace defender Mamadou Sakho made a hash of clearing Callum Hudson-Odoi's cross and Azpilicueta hooked the ball to Abraham, whose determined header allowed Chilwell to fire home from six yards.

Chilwell was proving impossible for Palace to contain and he was catalyst for Chelsea's second goal in the 66th minute.

Whipping a teasing cross into the Palace area from wide on the left, Chilwell found Zouma and the defender towered over Sakho to head home.

Chelsea were in control now and Jorginho made it three in the 78th minute when he slotted in a penalty after Abraham was fouled by Tyrick Mitchell.

Sakho conceded another penalty four minutes later and, after Abraham's tantrum, Jorginho kept his focus to make it four.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was impressed by Kai Havertz’s performance on Wednesday after he netted a hat-trick in their 6-0 League Cup win over Barnsley and said it was just the first of many great nights to come from the Germany international.

Havertz struggled in Premier League games against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool but showed on Wednesday why Chelsea spent 71 million pounds ($90 million) to get him from Bayer Leverkusen.

“I said in the last two games that Kai has had no pre-season and in signing for the club, I think it took a few days out as well,” Lampard told reporters.

“We had to play him because we had a few injuries and tonight was a great exercise and another game for him to see how we work off the ball, to be part of that.

“The combinations he had with Tammy Abraham, the way he grew into the game and had confidence and the three goals. It was a great night for Kai and the first of many for him.”

Lampard also confirmed that Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy had completed his medical ahead of his move from Rennes.

Lampard expects many more big nights from Havertz

Chelsea on Thursday announced the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes on a five-year deal for a reported fee of £22 million ($28 million).

The Senegal international will compete for a starting spot with Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has struggled for form and confidence at Stamford Bridge.

He is Frank Lampard's seventh senior signing of a busy summer following the arrivals of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.

"I am so excited to be joining Chelsea," said Mendy. "It's a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff.&nbsp;

"I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can't wait to get started."

The 6 feet 5 inch (1.96 metre) stopper kept nine clean sheets in 24 Ligue 1 appearances last season, helping the Bretons to finish third and qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Although born in France, Mendy, 28, opted to represent Senegal at international level.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: "As soon as Petr Cech (technical and performance advisor) and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in.

"Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes. He is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club."

Kepa, who cost Chelsea £72 million in 2018, has proved error-prone and was dropped twice by Lampard in favour of 38-year-old Willy Caballero last season.

He made another high-profile mistake against Liverpool on Sunday, gifting possession to Sadio Mane for his second goal.

In first half stoppage-time, Jordan Henderson picked out Mane's run behind Christensen and the Denmark defender responded by rugby-tackling the Senegal star to the ground.

It was the latest costly blunder from Kepa, who was dropped twice by Chelsea manager Frank Lampard last season despite his status as the world's most expensive keeper.

Lampard will be relieved that Chelsea are reportedly close to signing Rennes' Senegal international Edouard Mendy as he looks to replace Kepa.

Bale has returned to Tottenham on a season-long loan from Real Madrid seven years after he left the north London club.

Danny Ings put Southampton ahead in the first half, but Son equalised before the break and scored three more in the second half, with each of his goals coming from Kane assists.&nbsp;

Kane, who hit the back of the net twice in the first half only to have them ruled out for offside, capped a swaggering display with his second goal of the season.

"Son was on fire and for me Harry Kane was the man of the match, what he did for the team," said Mourinho, whose side had lost their league opener against Everton.

"With him dropping back and connecting the game between the lines for Sonny to attack, the space they created was a problem they couldn't resolve."

Just 24 hours after Tottenham signed Gareth Bale, Son delivered a virtuoso display that showed Mourinho's side already have plenty of firepower. Bale has returned to Tottenham on a season-long loan from Real Madrid seven years after he left the north London club. Danny Ings put Southampton ahead in the first half, but Son equalised before the break and scored three more in the second half, with each of his goals coming from Kane assists. "With him dropping back and connecting the game between the lines for Sonny to attack, the space they created was a problem they couldn't resolve." Leicester moved to the top of the table on goal difference ahead of Arsenal, Everton, Crystal Palace and Liverpool after they came from behind to beat Burnley 4-2. After a disappointing end to last season to miss out on Champions League football, Brendan Rodgers' side have responded well with two convincing wins to start the new campaign. Chris Wood fired the visitors into a 10th-minute lead at the King Power, but Harvey Barnes sparked the fightback before Erik Pieters' own goal, James Justin and Dennis Praet's blistering finish handed the Foxes all three points. Neal Maupay's quick-fire double inspired Brighton's 3-0 win against Newcastle as the Seagulls claimed their first Premier League victory of the season. Graham Potter's side raced into a two-goal lead after just seven minutes at St James' Park thanks to the brace from French striker Maupay. Aaron Connolly grabbed the third for Brighton, who had Yves Bissouma sent off after his raised boot caught Jamal Lewis in the face.

Premier League: Liverpool's Mane sinks 10-man Chelsea, Son hits four in Spurs rout

The gulf that still exists between Liverpool and Chelsea was on show on Sunday as the&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;champions secured a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge in a match defined by the differing fortunes of the world's two most expensive goalkeepers.

Alisson Becker's record £67 million ($87 million) move from Roma to Liverpool in 2018 lasted just three weeks before Chelsea paid £72 million to buy Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao.

Just over two years on there is no doubt who got value for money with Chelsea prepared to spend again to solve their 'keeper crisis with the imminent arrival of Edouard Mendy from Rennes.

Kepa's latest calamity saw him gift possession to Sadio Mane for the Senegalese's second goal after heading Liverpool into the lead early in the second-half.

Chelsea's decision to spend £200 million in recent months before addressing their goalkeeper situation raised questions before the season started as to their title credentials.

Just two games in, doubts over Kepa's ability to start for a title contender have proven well founded as he also let Leandro Trossard's long-range striker under his arm in Monday's 3-1 win at Brighton.

"He's our player and it's clear there are two games where we feel (he made mistakes)," said Lampard. "Brighton was a mistake as well. He's reflected on that.

"It's a clear mistake that's cost us because at that point we go onto have a penalty which we might score and those fine margins change games at this level.

"Kepa has to keep working, he has to have support around him that's very clear but it was a clear mistake."

The Spaniard was dropped twice by Lampard in favour of 38-year-old Willy Caballero last season and Chelsea's failure to solve their goalkeeping problem before splashing out to reinforce in other areas of the field, where they are better stocked, has been a puzzling one.

Kepa had the lowest save percentage of any goalkeeper to play at least 10 games in the&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;last season and conceded 10 more goals than he should have, according to Opta's expected goals metric.

<h2>Karius cut after Kiev&nbsp;</h2>

Liverpool can now boast one of the best goalkeepers in the world as Alisson showed by saving Jorginho's penalty on Sunday having had barely anything to do for the first 75 minutes.

However, it was not so long ago that Klopp found himself in a similar situation to Lampard.

After reaching the Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;final and finishing fourth in the&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;in 2017/18, Klopp's side were clearly on the rise.

But two catastrophic errors from Loris Karius in the 3-1 final defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev convinced the German and the Liverpool hierarchy they needed a top goalkeeper to win major trophies again.

Six weeks later, Alisson arrived at Anfield and has played in major part in winning the Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;and&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;over the past two seasons.

"Even at 2-0, we could have scored more but we didn't and the game is open," said Klopp. "We produce the penalty, I'm not sure I would have given it, then Ali had to make the save.

"This is a proper team performance, everybody had to work hard."

Chelsea have spent big and looked to the future in the signings of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell.

But without a world-class keeper behind them, they still do not have the foundations of a title contender.

Liverpool's Alisson Becker shows Chelsea the value of a great goalkeeper

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea are already showing the benefits of his £200 million ($257 million) spending spree as they kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 3-1 win at Brighton on Monday.

Blues boss Lampard has splashed out on a host of new signings and the early returns on his lavish investment were promising.&nbsp;

Germany striker Timo Werner, a £53 million recruit from Leipzig, won the penalty that Jorginho converted to put Chelsea ahead.

Kai Havertz, who made a £70 million switch from Bayer Leverkusen, wasn't quite so impactful, but Lampard will be confident there are better days to come from the young Germany forward.

"Timo's speed to win the penalty showed he is sharp and he was a threat all night. He is very mobile and I liked his performance," Lampard said.

"With Kai we saw a lot as well. To get these minutes will only be good and both of them will be huge players for this club."

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was guilty of another mistake when Leandro Trossard equalised for Brighton.

But Reece James' superb strike put Chelsea back in front before Kurt Zouma's deflected effort sealed the points.

It was an encouraging result for Lampard, who has accepted he is under pressure to deliver a title challenge after spending more than any other club so far in the summer transfer window.

"I think to expect everything to click on day one is very difficult. But what they did do was show a bit of determination," Lampard said.

@I really liked the work ethic and the discipline of the team. We've been together as a team for four days after the international break. We had a lot of quarantines before that and new signings.

"We might have dropped points in this game last season. I'm not getting excited by that on day one, but it had a little bit of determination and resilience about it I thought."

Chelsea finished 33 points behind champions Liverpool in fourth last season before a disappointing FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal, but they are primed to improve if Lampard can gel his new signings.

Lampard's other expensive recruits, former Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech and ex-Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell, were both sidelined by injuries, while Thiago Silva wasn't available as he returns to training following his free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

The historians among Chelsea's fanbase will have noted this was the third time they have started a Premier League campaign with a Monday night victory, with the Blues going on to win the title on the previous occasions in 2014-15 and 2016-17.

The only frustration for Lampard was Kepa's howler.

The world's most expensive keeper was already under pressure to improve after an error-strewn season and with Chelsea having spoken to Rennes about Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy, his days as first choice might be numbered.

Insisting he has not written off Kepa yet, Lampard said: "I am happy with Kepa, I saw confidence in him, he is here, he is our keeper and I am happy with him."

<h2>- Classy Werner -</h2>

Werner was Chelsea's central striker while Havertz lined up on the right flank in the three-man attack.

It was Werner who showed all his class as Chelsea took the lead in the 23rd minute.

Brighton midfielder Steven Alzate surrendered possession with a wayward pass and Jorginho fed Werner, who raced through on goal and was brought down by Mat Ryan as he rounded the Albion keeper.

Jorginho stepped up to take the penalty and Chelsea's captain sent Ryan the wrong way with his trademark hop before shooting.

Brighton equalised in the 54th minute when Trossard's 20-yard shot slipped under Kepa's weak attempted save.

Kepa's blunder wasn't fatal for Chelsea as James restored their lead just 100 seconds later with a stunning 30-yard blast.

Chelsea sealed the points in the 66th minute when Zouma met James' corner with a volley that took a heavy deflection of Adam Webster to wrong-foot Ryan.
