Goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond earned Southampton a surprise 2-0 win at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-antonio-rudiger-wants-swift-action-against-alleged-racist-abusers-269639">Chelsea</a> in the Premier League on Thursday.

Obafemi broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season, bursting inside from the right and curling into the top corner after a tight opening half-hour.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624">Frank Lampard</a> changed his side's formation from 3-4-3 to 4-2-3-1 at the break and nearly earned an instant dividend as substitute Mason Mount set up Tammy Abraham, who flashed a shot into the side netting.

Saints winger Redmond was denied by Kepa Arrizabalaga on the break but coolly finished for the visitors' second after an impressive team move to silence Stamford Bridge.

The hosts struggled to break down Southampton's tight defence, and Ralph Hasenhuttl's side rises to 14th, three points clear of the relegation zone, building on last weekend's win over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/aston-villa-beat-liverpools-kids-to-reach-league-cup-semis-268863">Aston Villa</a>.

Premier League: Improving Saints stun Chelsea with 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge

Tottenham Hotspur manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mourinho-aiming-to-add-to-chelseas-woes-269130">Jose Mourinho</a> said Son Heung-min had suffered enough as he confirmed the club would appeal against the red card the South Korean received against Chelsea.

Son was dismissed in the second half of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624">Spurs' 2-0 loss</a> at home to their London rivals on Sunday after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) deemed he had kicked out at Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger - an incident that led to the alleged racist abuse of the Germany international.

Anthony Talor, the on-field referee, did not punish Son, but a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-rule-makers-look-at-ways-of-providing-more-information-about-var-decisions-266170">VAR check</a> saw the player ruled guilty of violent conduct, prompting a red card.

Mourinho was dismayed when a replay of the incident was shown in the ground and Monday saw him announce Spurs' intention to contest the decision as they appeal against a Son dismissal for the second time this season.

Meanwhile, the club is still waiting to discover from the Football Association if Son will be available for Thursday's Boxing Day's clash with Brighton.

"I hope Son is not punished five times," Mourinho said Monday. "One time was the foul that Rudiger did on him.

"The second is to be sent off. The third would be not to play against Brighton. The fourth not to play against Norwich and the fifth not to play against Southampton.

"So I hope to be punished twice is enough, he doesn't deserve for the third the fourth or the fifth."

The experienced Portuguese boss lamented the way in which VAR was being deployed, saying replay official Paul Tierney rather than Taylor, the referee on the pitch, had been in charge of the game.&nbsp;

"Mr Paul Tierney decides yes and Mr Anthony Taylor who was in the game, in real time, five metres from the situation, Mr Taylor decided no," said Mourinho, now managing his third leading English club after stints at Chelsea and Manchester United.

"So who was refereeing the game? Not Mr Taylor. It was Mr Tierney.

"I think not a red card, VAR was to support football, to bring true football, to bring true to the spectacle and they did that with the penalty decision and they killed the game with Son's decision.

"The situation with Son, I think Mr Tierney made it wrong. It's the wrong call."

Dynamic winger Son, a key figure since Mourinho joined Spurs, is set to be suspended for three games if his red card is upheld.

"It would be a big loss," said Mourinho of Son, who joined Tottenham from Germany's Bayer Leverkusen four years ago. "But if that happens then we have to try to cope with it and to fight against injustice."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-gives-fifa-commitment-on-womens-access-to-matches-report-269399">FIFA</a> has&nbsp;banned Bahrain defender Sayed&nbsp;Baqer&nbsp;for&nbsp;10&nbsp;matches for 'discriminatory behaviour' in a World Cup qualifier against Hong Kong, soccer's world governing body has said.

Baqer, 25, was captured on video making a slant-eyed&nbsp;gesture&nbsp;in the direction of Hong Kong supporters after a goalless draw in the city on November&nbsp;14.

FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against&nbsp;Baqer&nbsp;last month and announced that the player had also been fined 30,000 Swiss francs ($30,549.90) and warned over his conduct.

The suspension follows the governing body's July announcement that it had doubled the minimum&nbsp;ban&nbsp;for&nbsp;racist&nbsp;behaviour to&nbsp;10&nbsp;games.

A number of high-profile&nbsp;racist&nbsp;incidents have marred the&nbsp;game&nbsp;this season.

The most recent involved the arrest of a Chelsea fan for allegedly racially abusing Tottenham Hotspur's South Korean forward <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mourinho-confirms-tottenham-appeal-against-wrong-red-for-son-269877">Son Heung-min</a> in a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624">Premier League</a> match in London on Sunday.

Italy has also been front and centre this season with Inter Milan's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/were-going-backwards-says-romelu-lukaku-after-racist-abuse-at-cagliari-247197">Romelu Lukaku</a> and Brescia's Mario Balotelli being targeted by rival fans during Serie A matches.

In a separate ruling, FIFA ordered Indonesia to play one match behind closed doors without fans and fined the country's soccer association 200,000 Swiss francs over security failings during a World Cup qualifier with Malaysia last month.

Malaysia were fined 50,000 Swiss francs for the behaviour of their fans.

Sierra Leone have also been told to play one&nbsp;game&nbsp;behind closed doors and were fined 50,000 Swiss francs for a lack of order during a qualifier against Liberia in September.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-tottenham-hotspur-name-mourinho-as-manager-263339">Tottenham Hotspur</a> manager<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mourinho-aiming-to-add-to-chelseas-woes-269130"> Jose Mourinho</a> admitted that his old club Chelsea were superior as his side's revival came to a shuddering halt in a dispiriting 2-0 Premier League derby defeat on Sunday.

The Portuguese have suffered two defeats in the six league games he has been in charge of Spurs since replacing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pochettino-might-return-to-spurs-one-day-says-chairman-levy-269288">Mauricio Pochettino</a> and both have come against former clubs.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-to-compete-manchester-united-in-league-cup-semi-finals-derby-269097">Manchester United</a> was the first to blot his copybook with a 2-1 win earlier this month at Old Trafford, but this home defeat by Chelsea, the club he led to three Premier League titles, was much more worrying, underlining the task he has taken on.

Mourinho had never lost a home match against a previous club in any competition, winning 12 and drawing one, but his former midfielder Frank Lampard totally outwitted his old mentor in the coaching stakes as his<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-spurs-have-the-momentum-heading-into-chelsea-clash-kane-268958"> Chelsea </a>side dominated throughout.

Tottenham could have leapfrogged their London rivals into fourth with a win, but they self-destructed with a pitiful display.

Mourinho's central midfield of Eric Dier and Moussa Sissoko was overrun, right-back Serge Aurier was badly exposed for Willian's 12th-minute opener and his forward line was toothless with Harry Kane barely having a shot.

Keeper Paulo Gazzaniga's rush of blood gifted Chelsea a penalty just before halftime from which Willian made it 2-0.

Then, Son Heung-min's red card for an equally daft loss of composure when he kicked out in retaliation against Antonio Rudiger meant Tottenham played the last 30 minutes with 10 men.

It left Tottenham seventh, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, and a quick response is required if the optimism of Mourinho's start is not to vanish before the New Year has been rung in.

"They were better than us in the first half. It is not difficult for me to admit it," Mourinho told reporters.

"They played in a system they are very comfortable with. A system they played for two years with Antonio Conte. Lots of their players are very comfortable with it.

"It's easy for me to admit they were superior. But you look to the goals and they are not a consequence of any superiority.

"The first goal is a short corner with a big mistake. We know how to defend short corners, we train how to deal with short corners. The players involved were not focused."

Mourinho admitted VAR was correct to award Chelsea their penalty despite referee Anthony Taylor not giving it but said Son's red card, also awarded via VAR, was harsh.

He felt Rudiger had made a meal of their clash and said he should have had a yellow card for his initial challenge on Son.

"We were looking for a goal and instead of a goal comes to a red card," he said. "When you have the situation with Son and Rudiger it's not a clear and obvious mistake by the referee."

Mourinho then added sarcastically: "Rudiger is for sure having scans in the hospital on broken ribs because it was a really violent situation."

Premier League: Spurs have the momentum heading into Chelsea clash- Harry Kane

Chelsea manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-enjoy-derby-demolition-as-it-sets-new-club-record-leicester-still-chasing-266306">Frank&nbsp;Lampard&nbsp;</a>says he hopes to sign a forward in&nbsp;January&nbsp;to make up for the loss of Belgian Eden Hazard, who moved to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/gareth-bale-has-never-asked-to-leave-real-madrid-says-agent-266604">Real Madrid</a> in the close season.

Chelsea was cleared to sign players in the next transfer window last week after the Court of Arbitration for Sport halved a ban for breaching rules on the international transfer and registration of players under 18.

"I will look at all areas of the team,"&nbsp;Lampard&nbsp;told reporters after his team reached the last 16 of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-liverpool-in-eye-of-storm-against-salzburg-267519">Champions League</a> by beating Lille 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

"But I think it was quite clear in the summer that you lose <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/la-liga-real-madrid-go-top-with-gutsy-win-against-alaves-265514">Eden Hazard</a>, who was a huge part of scoring or creating our goals last season and the season before that, the high level of player he is.

"We've found ways as a team where we can still be competitive but going forward if we're looking at if we can get even better in forwarding areas to help competition then I think we'll always look at that."

Lampard&nbsp;did not think that signing another striker might affect the confidence of younger players like <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-abraham-return-helps-chelsea-beat-villa-266321">Tammy Abraham</a>, who has scored 13 goals for the club this season.

Chelsea's&nbsp;next match is at home against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard says he hopes to sign a forward in January to make up for the loss of Belgian Eden Hazard, who moved to Real Madrid in the close season. Chelsea was cleared to sign players in the next transfer window last week after the Court of Arbitration for Sport halved a ban for breaching rules on the international transfer and registration of players under 18. "I will look at all areas of the team," Lampard told reporters after his team reached the last 16 of the Champions League by beating Lille 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. "But I think it was quite clear in the summer that you lose Eden Hazard, who was a huge part of scoring or creating our goals last season and the season before that, the high level of player he is. "We've found ways as a team where we can still be competitive but going forward if we're looking at if we can get even better in forwarding areas to help competition then I think we'll always look at that." Lampard did not think that signing another striker might affect the confidence of younger players like Tammy Abraham, who has scored 13 goals for the club this season. "I don't think it is a concern at all because they are here to stay, I truly believe in that," he added. "I believe in the quality of all the young players here." Chelsea's next match is at home against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

Lampard keen to strengthen Chelsea's attack in January

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/lampard-keen-to-strengthen-chelseas-attack-in-january-267569">Chelsea</a> survived a nerve-jangling finale to their 2-1 win over Lille on Tuesday, eventually holding on to clinch a place in the Champions League knock-out stages thanks to first-half goals from Tammy Abraham and captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

Chelsea, who needed a victory to make sure of qualification, had gone five <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-advance-to-last-16-with-2-0-win-in-salzburg-267561">Champions League</a> games at Stamford Bridge without a victory, their longest such run at home in the competition.

They dominated almost the entire game yet Lille, who were already condemned to the bottom spot of Group H and fielded an under-strength side, scored in the 78th minute and came close to a late equaliser that would have eliminated Chelsea.

Victory left Chelsea second in the group on 11 points behind Valencia, who won 1-0 at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/onana-passed-fit-but-ajax-miss-injured-striker-promes-267387">Ajax Amsterdam</a>, consigning the Dutch champions to third place and elimination. Lille ended with just one point.

"It did get twitchy," Chelsea coach Frank Lampard said. "We need to take our chances better. At 2-0, I thought it was not quite done and when Lille scored it made it a more nervy finish to the game than it needed to be."

After dominating the opening proceedings in a downpour and swirling wind, Chelsea went ahead in the 19th minute when U.S. striker Christian Pulisic darted forward to feed Willian and the Brazilian's cut-back cross was turned in by Abraham.

The Londoners doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Azpilicueta shook off his marker to score with a close-range header from a corner by Emerson.

But what had looked like being a comfortable night for the Blues proved anything but once former Chelsea striker Loic Remy pulled a goal back for Lille with his shot going in off the underside of the bar.

Remy then wasted a chance to equalise when he shot straight at Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in injury time.

Lille coach Christophe Galtier said his team had struggled in the opening 30 minutes to cope with Chelsea and the heavy rain and wind that swept around Stamford Bridge.

"Chelsea seemed to play a bit less in the second half. We got more of the ball and we deserved to get our goal," he said. "It made the match more interesting than what went before it. We could have scored a second goal."

The result meant all four English teams in this season's Champions League - Liverpool, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-not-on-par-with-european-elite-says-guardiola-267118">Manchester City</a> and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Chelsea - have reached the last 16 of the competition.

There was further good news for Chelsea as they welcomed back central defender Antonio Rudiger who had previously played only 45 minutes this season due to injuries.

Chelsea hold on against Lille to advance in Champions League

The final round of group stage matches in the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-liverpool-and-napoli-left-with-work-to-do-after-anfield-draw-264987"> UEFA Champions League</a> gets underway today. Eight teams are already through to the knockouts, the eight others who will join them will be decided over the next two days.

Holders Liverpool is in a small group of heavyweights in danger of missing out as they travel to Austria to take on free-scoring Salzburg.

Jurgen Klopp's side would have sealed qualification with a game to spare if they had beaten Italian club Napoli two weeks ago but they were instead held to a 1-1 draw that leaves them needing at least one more point to guarantee progress.

Liverpool is unlikely to have it easy against Salzburg who gave them a mighty scare in a 4-3 defeat at Anfield earlier in the group stage.

Ahead of the match, Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said: "Two weeks ago Salzburg were very happy that they won against Genk and we played a draw against Napoli so they thought now they have the final against us, adding, "Napoli was really happy that night because they got a point at Anfield and thought they only have to play Genk next week in a home game. So two weeks later everybody knows it's a final, so we knew it since two weeks and we are prepared."&nbsp;

Salzburg is currently third in the group but have the chance to enter the knockouts if they can become only the second team to beat Liverpool across competitions this season.

Liverpool is a point clear with second-placed Napoli favourites to join them in the knockouts.

The Italians managed by Carlo Ancelotti have not won any of their last nine matches though and that gives the Belgians hope of pulling off an upset.

Napoli needs at least a draw to guarantee qualification as well but will miss out if they lose, and Salzburg upset Liverpool.

It's all to play for in Group H with three teams - including last season's semi-finalists Ajax and Chelsea in with a chance of progressing.

Frank <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/chelsea-thwarted-by-valencia-in-champions-league-thriller-264990">Lampard's Chelsea</a> know&nbsp;that only maximum points against the French side Lille at Stamford Bridge will guarantee them a spot in the round of 16.

Frank Lampard, Chelsea head coach said: "I think it would be a good achievement. I mean, I know there are expectations that we should get through a group, I get that."

"But it was a tough group and the slightly young feel to our team, you know, the fact we lost the first game, there are a few difficulties that we've had," he added.

"And I think we've dealt with them very well to get ourselves in this position. But there's still work to be done. So, yeah, we have to win, go out to win the game." &nbsp;&nbsp;

Group leaders Ajax require at least a draw against Valencia&nbsp;but if the Spaniards were to claim an unlikely win in Amsterdam, then they will be through to the last-16.

A draw will also be enough for the Spanish outfit, but only if Chelsea drop points.

Champions League: Liverpool in eye of storm against Salzburg

Onana&nbsp;had a scan on a hamstring injury suffered in training on Saturday and was given the all-clear to play in Tuesday's Group H game at the Amsterdam Arena, where&nbsp;Ajax&nbsp;still need a draw to guarantee progress to the last 16.

Promes&nbsp;has not recovered from a calf injury suffered on Friday when leaders&nbsp;Ajax, surprisingly, lost 2-0 at home to Willem II, losing their season's unbeaten league record although they remain three points clear at the top.

"We were annoyed but we quickly let it go. We changed focus quickly towards tomorrow's match," said Ten Hag.

A win would ensure top place in the group for&nbsp;Ajax, who have 10 points from five games, but a draw could see them usurped by Chelsea and finish second.

Defeat to Valencia could even see last year's semi-finalists exit the competition, should Chelsea beat Lille in the other group match.

"We know what outcome we need but we will go out to play our game and to go for the win," said Dutch international Donny van de Beek at Monday's pre-match press conference.

Everton are working with anti-discrimination group Kick It Out to investigate reports of homophobic chanting by fans during their 3-1 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/united-win-feisty-manchester-derby-as-liverpool-secure-christmas-no1-266926">Premier League</a> club said on Sunday.

Everton said the club and Kick It Out had received reports of a homophobic chant being aimed at Chelsea’s fans by a small section of the home crowd during Saturday's match.

"Homophobia has no place within our stadium, our club, our community or our game. The club strongly condemns such behaviour and is carrying out a thorough investigation which will include liaison with Merseyside Police," Everton said in a statement.

Tammy Abraham scored a goal and set up another on his return from injury as Chelsea beat Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday to put their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-enjoy-derby-demolition-as-it-sets-new-club-record-leicester-still-chasing-266306">Premier League</a> campaign back on track after two straight defeats.

Abraham headed home from close range for his 11th league goal of the season in the 24th minute after a lofted cross by right back Reece James, another of the home-grown players at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/chelsea-thwarted-by-valencia-in-champions-league-thriller-264990">Chelsea</a> who have flourished under coach Frank Lampard.

Villa equalised with their first real chance in the 41st minute when Egyptian Trezeguet headed a cross from his compatriot Ahmed El Mohamady down on to his own foot and the ball crossed the line.

Chelsea regained the lead in style three minutes into the second half when Abraham - who played for Villa last season on loan - chested a cross by Willian invitingly for fellow academy graduate Mason Mount to volley home.

Abraham, 22, missed Chelsea's 1-0 home defeat by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/jose-mourinho-makes-instant-impact-as-tottenham-defeat-west-ham-264133">West Ham United</a> due to injury and Lampard heaped praise on the forward whose form has earned him a call-up for England.

"He’s showing his all-round game, he stretches defences, he starts our press," Lampard said. "He's a personality that has grown in our dressing room every day with his enthusiasm and his will to win, and of course with players on such a good run, when they come out of the team you can miss them."

Chelsea went in search of a third goal and Willian came closest to getting it when the Brazilian's free kick was touched onto a post by Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton. Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga denied Ezri Konsa Ngoyo a late equaliser.

The result left Chelsea in fourth place, six points above fifth-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers. Aston Villa are 15th and only one point clear of the relegation area.

Villa coach Dean Smith said his team were second best to Chelsea and started both halves on the back foot unlike in their previous game when they battled to a 2-2 draw at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-rashford-double-as-united-spoil-mourinhos-return-266316">Manchester United</a>.

"I feel that we can be as good as teams like Chelsea. We have got to be more consistent in our play to do that," he said. "Tonight we weren’t as consistent as we were on Sunday against Manchester United."

Former Chelsea captain John Terry, now Villa's assistant head coach, stepped on to the pitch after the match to applause from the home fans. The former England captain played 717 times for Chelsea.

Premier League: Abraham return helps Chelsea beat Villa

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/klopp-praises-liverpool-intensity-after-crucial-win-over-city-261303">Liverpool </a>extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to 11 points with a nervy 2-1 win over Brighton as Manchester City slipped up once more in a draw at Newcastle on Saturday.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/chelsea-thwarted-by-valencia-in-champions-league-thriller-264990">Chelsea </a>missed the chance to go level on points with second-placed City as Frank Lampard's men suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat by West Ham, while Tottenham's winning run under Jose Mourinho continued as Dele Alli scored twice in a 3-2 win over Bournemouth.

Virgil van Dijk is hoping to beat Lionel Messi to the Ballon d'Or on Monday and showed he can score goals as well as stop them with two towering headers from Trent Alexander-Arnold set-piece deliveries to put Liverpool 2-0 up inside 25 minutes at Anfield.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was then sent off 14 minutes from time for handling outside his area and Brighton reduced the deficit from the resulting free-kick through captain Lewis Dunk.

But the 10 men held out for another vital three points to edge closer to a first league title in 30 years.

"It was unnecessary," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp of the nervy finale. "We had unbelievable chances.

"We had the red card for Alisson. Adrian comes in with cold feet and cold hands but made two really good saves.

"The boys threw everything on the pitch. It's unbelievable how much they want to win."

City twice blow lead&nbsp;

While Liverpool have made a habit of winning games when not at their best, City let points slip away not for the first time this season to further dent their title chances.

Twice Pep Guardiola's men led at St James' Park through Raheem Sterling and a brilliant Kevin De Bruyne strike eight minutes from time.

But Newcastle responded quickly on both occasions as Jetro Willems cancelled out Sterling's strike before Jonjo Shelvey swept home a well-worked free-kick two minutes from time.

"We do the same work we have done over the last few seasons. We tried to score more goals but it did not happen," said Guardiola, whose side failed to capitalise on nearly 80 percent of possession.

City's slip-up gave Chelsea the chance to go level on points with the champions and Leicester, who host Everton on Sunday.

However, the Blues failed to replicate their fine form over the past two months as West Ham won for the first time in nine games to ease the pressure on Manuel Pellegrini.

Aaron Cresswell scored the only goal three minutes into the second half with a tidy finish as he cut inside onto his weaker right foot.

But it was the Hammers who were the more likely to add to the scoring as the second period wore on with Kepa Arrizabalaga keeping them at bay with a string of saves, while Michail Antonio had a goal ruled out after a VAR review for handball.

'Phenomenal' Alli&nbsp;

Tottenham are up to fifth and within six points of Chelsea in the battle for a top-four finish as the in-form Alli preserved Jose Mourinho's perfect start.

The scoreline should have been far more convincing for Mourinho's men, who led 3-0 with 17 minutes left as Alli's fine form continued with a goal either side of half-time before Moussa Sissoko scored for the first time in over two years.

"I think he played three phenomenal matches since I arrived," said Mourinho on Alli's return of three goals in as many games.

"He plays in a position where he feels happy and comfortable."

Tottenham have conceded twice in all three of Mourinho's matches in charge and were left hanging on as Harry Wilson scored a late double for the visitors.

Crystal Palace secured their first win in six games to move into the top half as Wilfried Zaha and Jeffrey Schlupp were on target in a 2-0 win at Burnley.

Southampton staged a vital late fightback in the battle to avoid relegation to beat Watford 2-1.

Ismaila Sarr's first Premier League goal had the Hornets heading off the bottom of the table at the Saints' expense, but Danny Ings levelled 12 minutes from time and James Ward-Prowse's brilliant free-kick five minutes later handed Southampton a first home victory of the season.

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to 11 points with a nervy 2-1 win over Brighton as Manchester City slipped up once more in a draw at Newcastle on Saturday.

Premier League: Liverpool extend lead at top as Manchester City, Chelsea falter

A freak goal from Valencia's Daniel Wass earned the Spanish side a 2-2 draw in an epic encounter against England's Chelsea on Wednesday that left both sides waiting to book their place in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/messi-scores-in-700th-match-as-barcelona-ease-into-knockout-stages-264968">Champions League</a>'s knockout stage.

Valencia, who missed a glut of chances, had taken the lead through Carlos Soler but goals from Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic flipped the match on its head.

The Spaniards missed a penalty through Dani Parejo, but drew level late on when Wass netted a remarkable effort, shaping to centre before finding the net with a finish across goal.

The draw means both sides are on eight points after five games but Valencia have a better head-to-head record and so are second in Group H, with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-chelsea-and-nine-man-ajax-share-spoils-in-thrilling-4-4-draw-260245">Chelsea in third</a>.

Ajax Amsterdam sit top on 10 points after winning 2-0 at Lille, who are bottom with one.

Valencia visit last season's semi-finalists Ajax in their final group game and will have to win there to ensure they qualify, while Chelsea will book their place in the last-16 if they beat Lille at home.

"We nearly won it, nearly lost it. It was end to end, not that we wanted it to be," Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said.

Valencia coach Albert Celades added: "The sensation in our dressing room is that we have missed a very good chance to qualify for the next round. But to get to the last game with our fate in our hands is not bad."

Victory for either side at Mestalla would have sent them through and Valencia went ahead when Soler scored in the 40th minute after team mate Maxi Gomez had missed two gilt-edged opportunities.

Yet Kovacic levelled for Chelsea two minutes later, netting for the first time in 122 club games.

Chelsea's top scorer Tammy Abraham was carried off on a stretcher with a serious-looking injury before halftime, although Lampard said after the game the striker had only suffered a knock to the hip.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-valencia-roar-back-in-second-half-to-thrash-lille-260253">Valencia</a> defender Jose Gaya was also taken off on a stretcher after fulltime having collapsed on the pitch.

United States international Pulisic put Lampard's side ahead in the 50th minute after a lengthy VAR review ruled him onside.

Valencia forward Rodrigo Moreno missed an open goal later in the half and then the home side were awarded a penalty.

But captain Parejo was denied from the spot by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, spurning a second penalty in the competition after also missing in the defeat to Ajax Amsterdam.

The Spaniards eventually levelled in the 82nd minute with a remarkable goal from Danish midfielder Wass, who looked set to cross from the right wing but instead flummoxed Arrizabalaga by firing a shot across goal which bounced off the far post and into the net.

Valencia should have won the game in added time but Rodrigo failed to connect properly with a cross from close range, while Chelsea had a shot cleared off the line before then and Valencia keeper Jasper Cillessen denied Michy Batshuayi.

"Parts of our performance I'm not mad on. We gave away too many chances. We missed a lot as well," said Lampard.

"They were arriving in our box too much. Credit to the players for their work-rate and hanging on in there, but sometimes you have to be more secure than that."

Valencia defender Ezequiel Garay added: "We had a lot of chances and we deserved to win but we have to believe we can win and go through in Amsterdam."

A freak goal from Valencia's Daniel Wass earned the Spanish side a 2-2 draw in an epic encounter against England's Chelsea on Wednesday that left both sides waiting to book their place in the Champions League's knockout stage.

Chelsea thwarted by Valencia in Champions League thriller

Chelsea and nine-man Ajax Amsterdam battled to an incident-packed 4-4 draw in Champions League Group H on Tuesday, with the hosts coming back from 4-1 down after scoring two own goals.

The result left both teams and Valencia, who beat bottom side Lille 4-1, on seven points at the top of the standings in a battle for two places in the last 16.

Ajax looked faster and slicker from the outset at Stamford Bridge. Only two minutes into the game Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta gave away a free-kick and Tammy Abraham deflected Quincy Promes's whipped cross into his own net.

Less than three minutes later Chelsea were&nbsp;level after US&nbsp;forward Christian Pulisic surged into the Ajax area and was brought down. Jorginho calmly slotted home the penalty, sending keeper Andre Onana the wrong way.

But Ajax, who had won their last five Champions League away games, looked dangerous going forward. They were rewarded in the 20th when Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech spun an inch-perfect cross into the area and Promes dived low to head it home.

Another free-kick led to Ajax's third. Ziyech sent the ball from near the corner flag curling and spinning towards the far post where keeper Kepa failed to track it. The ball rebounded off the woodwork and went into the net off Kepa's face.

Chelsea came out flying after the break and looked to be building momentum but home hopes seemed crushed in the 55th when Ajax's wingers broke from their own half and Ziyech squared the ball for midfielder Donny van de Beek to poke home for 4-1.

Azpilicueta got a goal back for the hosts with a close-range flick in the 63rd and soon after Stamford Bridge erupted.

Daley Blind was sent off for a second foul and Joel Veltman also saw red for a second infraction after handling in the area and arguing with referee Gianluca Rocchi.

Jorginho scored his second penalty in the 71st minute and Chelsea's substitute defender Reece James cut through Ajax's depleted defence with an angled shot three minutes later.

Azpilicueta then had a goal ruled out for a handball in the area as Chelsea fought for a winner in a stirring last 15 minutes but Ajax held out to share the spoils.

Champions League: Chelsea and nine-man Ajax share spoils in thrilling 4-4 draw

Marcus Rashford's "bolt from the blue" stopped resurgent Chelsea in their tracks as his sensational free-kick fired Manchester United into the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-stroll-to-3-1-league-cup-win-over-southampton-258735">League Cup</a> quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

With 73 minutes on the clock and Chelsea beginning to dominate after Michy Batshuayi's superb equaliser, Rashford lined up a free kick 40 metres out and sent the ball dipping and swerving past a helpless Willy Caballero.

Rashford had given a near full-strength United a deserved halftime lead from the penalty spot after Welshman Daniel James had been fouled by Marcos Alonso.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/solskjaer-urges-manchester-united-to-show-killer-instinct-252175">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a>'s side held out reasonably comfortably to claim a third successive away victory having previously not won on the road since March.

It was United's second win over Chelsea this season, having beaten them 4-0 on the opening day of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-manchester-united-end-away-day-misery-despite-penalty-woe-258417">Premier League</a>.

Since then Frank Lampard's youthful Chelsea side have responded superbly and had won their last seven matches in all competitions to move into the Premier League's top four.

United, however, have laboured since but there are encouraging signs that they are beginning to hit their stride and Solskjaer appears to have targeted the League Cup.

He made only four changes to the side that started in the 3-1 win at Norwich City at the weekend, with 19-year-old Brandon Williams the only unfamiliar face.

"We've been leading 1-0 in many games and not kicked on. Today we were excellent, with fast flowing football. That's Manchester United. We're trying to get back to that," Solskjaer said. "Marcus has that strike in him.

"I've seen him in training so many times."

Lampard said Rashford's free kick had been a bolt from the blue.

He felt the game was theirs for the taking after Batshuayi, scorer of the winner at Ajax last week, ran from the halfway line before holding off a tackle and coolly dispatching a low shot into the bottom corner.

"No team can stop that," he said. "We weren't at our best in the first half, we were a little slow with our passing, but I loved the first half hour of the second half."

Chelsea have lost three games at Stamford Bridge in all competitions this season, one more than they did in the whole of the 2018-19 campaign. But Lampard was not too downhearted.

"I saw a lot of things that were good for us for the future, a lot of positives," he said. "I hate losing, we all do here, but it's clear there is a big picture and there are a lot of big games for us to come and a busy fixture list.

"Now we move on and focus on what is to come."

The draw for the quarter-finals is on Thursday in which United will be joined by Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Leicester City, Everton, Colchester United and Oxford.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2024, the Premier League club said on Thursday.

Hudson-Odoi's previous deal was set to expire at the end of the season and he was heavily linked with German champions Bayern Munich, whose interest in the 18-year-old was rejected by Chelsea earlier this year.

"His new deal commits him to the club he has trained at since the age of eight until at least 2024."

Hudson-Odoi, who made his senior England debut in a Euro 2020 qualifier March, is recovering from an Achilles injury he suffered in April.

Valencia spoiled Frank Lampard's managerial debut in the Champions League by earning a morale-boosting 1-0 win at Chelsea on Tuesday after Ross Barkley spurned a chance to equalise by missing from the penalty spot.

Spain forward Rodrigo Moreno gave the visitors the lead against the run of play in the 74th minute of the Group H game, getting the slightest of touches on a free kick from Dani Parejo to send the ball into the roof of the net.

Chelsea continued to threaten and were awarded a penalty after a VAR review spotted a handball by Valencia defender Daniel Wass.

But Barkley sent the resulting spot-kick on to the crossbar and over and Europa League holders Chelsea fell to their first home defeat in European competition since losing to Paris St Germain in March 2016.

"We shouldn't lose the game. Clearly," Lampard told reporters.

"We had a fair few chances and then the penalty, which we miss. We have to keep our heads up. There is a long way to go and this is a lesson that teams at this level can hurt you."

Lampard became the first Chelsea manager to lose his debut Champions League match in charge –- 10 of the previous 11 had won, while Gianluca Vialli drew with AC Milan in 1999.

Valencia travelled to London reeling from a stinging 5-2 league loss at Barcelona in coach Albert Celades's first game in charge after the much-loved Marcelino was sacked, despite overseeing two top-four finishes and winning the Copa del Rey.

His dismissal bewildered the players, who began a media blackout after the decision, while influential defender Ezequiel Garay fiercely criticised the move in an angry post on social media.

Celades&nbsp;'hugely impressed'

But the Spanish side leave the English capital emboldened and with three points after producing a solid, professional display and celebrating their triumph with their small band of travelling supporters tucked in a corner of Stamford Bridge.

"It's difficult to forget about everything that has happened but I thank the players for welcoming me and their professionalism," coach Celades said.

"We are going to get back to normality little by little and I was hugely impressed by the effort we put in today. It was not the ideal situation but we have tried to close ranks and look forward."

Lampard's side went into the game in confident mood after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-2 in the Premier League on Saturday and their supporters belted out the manager's name in his first Champions League game as a coach, after he won the competition in 2012 as a Chelsea player.

Visiting goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen was forced to make a pair of impressive saves to prevent the Londoners from taking the lead, turning away a powerful strike from Willian right before halftime.

The Dutchman then twice thwarted Marcos Alonso, parrying a low free kick early in the second half and tipping another set-piece effort from the Spaniard over the bar in stoppage time.

Chelsea were also dealt a setback with an ankle injury to in-form midfielder Mason Mount, who had to be taken off in the first half after a rash challenge from Valencia's Francis Coquelin.

Frank Lampard never doubted Tammy Abraham would make an impact in the Premier League but has vowed to come down tough if the Chelsea striker allows his current high standards to drop.

Abraham took his tally to seven goals in the last three games with an outstanding hat-trick in his side’s emphatic 5-2 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Having struggled to make an impact in the opening two games of the Premier League campaign, the 21-year-old is justifying the faith shown in him by Lampard who has made Abraham his first-choice striker.

The Chelsea manager insists, though, the challenge now confronting the England international is maintain his stunning start to the campaign.&nbsp;

“I have confidence in him, and I am prepared to give him chances, but even more now I will be tougher on him because he has shown what he can do,” said Lampard.&nbsp;

“The moment he wants to come off that and think that goals will drop at his feet will be the moment that he will be rested.

"It is important to make sure that he stays on his game. I have competition up there and I don”t want to down-talk Oli Giroud or Michy Batshuayi.”

Abraham, capped twice by England in international friendlies, was left out of Gareth Southgate’s most recent squad but Lampard believes the forward’s current form means he will be back in contention for a recall.

“With the way he is going it will obviously put him into that bracket without telling Gareth what to do,” added Lampard. “To score seven goals in three games and be top scorer (in the Premier League) and play with the quality of his all-round game.&nbsp;

“He has to keep playing at that level and he will have a great chance I’d suggest.”

Nigeria remain hopeful of persuading Abraham to switch allegiance although Lampard insisted he could offer no insight into the player’s thoughts on his international future.

“I know Tammy’s been in England squads before and I’m not surprised Nigeria would want him, but it’s a question for him,” said the manager.

Abraham struck twice before half-time after Fikayo Tomori had put Chelsea ahead and then again after the break with Mason Mount completing the win after an unfortunate Abraham own-goal and Patrick Cutrone replied for Wolves.

All three of Abraham, Mount and Tomori are graduates of the Chelsea academy and their presence in the starting line-up was further evidence of Lampard’s intention to put his faith in youth, which the manager hopes will generate its own motivation amongst his squad.

"They should aspire and feel the opportunity is there of they deserve it," said Lampard, who claimed the door is open for more academy players to come through.

"They should see their team-mates do really well and want to get in there.&nbsp;

"If we are going to be successful this season then we can’t absolutely rely on the young boys, but at the minute they are doing a good job of taking the reigns.”&nbsp;

Wolves have just three points from their opening five games, but manager Nuno Espirito Santo denied their poor run of form is anything to do with the early start to their Europa League campaign.

"No, it (the Europa League) was a challenge we embraced from the beginning. We knew what we needed to do," said Nuno.

"That was a bad, bad performance. We started the game well but the mistakes we made, we cannot go and repeat them."

I have competition up there and I don”t want to down-talk Oli Giroud or Michy Batshuayi.” Abraham, capped twice by England in international friendlies, was left out of Gareth Southgate’s most recent squad but Lampard believes the forward’s current form means he will be back in contention for a recall. “With the way he is going it will obviously put him into that bracket without telling Gareth what to do,” added Lampard. “To score seven goals in three games and be top scorer (in the Premier League) and play with the quality of his all-round game. “He has to keep playing at that level and he will have a great chance I’d suggest.” Nigeria remain hopeful of persuading Abraham to switch allegiance although Lampard insisted he could offer no insight into the player’s thoughts on his international future. "They should see their team-mates do really well and want to get in there. "If we are going to be successful this season then we can’t absolutely rely on the young boys, but at the minute they are doing a good job of taking the reigns.” Wolves have just three points from their opening five games, but manager Nuno Espirito Santo denied their poor run of form is anything to do with the early start to their Europa League campaign. "No, it (the Europa League) was a challenge we embraced from the beginning. We knew what we needed to do," said Nuno. "That was a bad, bad performance. We started the game well but the mistakes we made, we cannot go and repeat them."

Frank Lampard expects Tammy Abraham to maintain scoring streak

Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Italian league action after his four-goal spree for Portugal as Juventus head for Fiorentina on Saturday also boosted by coach Maurizio Sarri's highly-anticipated debut on the bench after a bout of pneumonia.

The ex-Chelsea coach missed his first two league games with the Serie A champions against Parma and his former club Napoli.

But the 60-year-old will be on the bench for the first time on Saturday as Juventus look to make it three wins this season before their Champions League opener at Atletico Madrid midweek.

Ronaldo's four goals in Portugal's European qualifying win over Lithuania during the week were enough to send shivers down the spines of Fiorentina fans.

The 34-year-old overtook Ireland's Robbie Keane as the all-time top scorer in Euro qualifiers, with 25 goals, and will be looking to impress further with the winner of the Best FIFA Football Awards to be named in Milan on September 23.

Ronaldo will lead the Juventus attack along with Douglas Costa and Gonzalo Higuain, the Argentine also in-form on his return to Turin after a loan spell at Chelsea.

"I'm back on the same team as Cris (Ronaldo) after a few years and he's even stronger, more complete and ambitious, I'm happy to play with him again," said Higuain, who played alongside Ronaldo on Real Madrid, said on Thursday.

Fiorentina have also changed owners and coach with former AC Milan and Sevilla manager Vincenzo Montella overseeing two defeats in as many games on his return to the club.

"Great stories are born of impossible challenges," said Montella, whose side last beat their fierce rivals in January 2017.

The rivalry has been fuelled further after Juventus wrapped up their eighth consecutive title with a 2-1 win at the expense of the Tuscans last April.

"I'd like to start a new chapter in Fiorentina's history by doing something special against Sarri's team," Montella told Gazzetta Dello Sport.

And Montella believes that new French signing Franck Ribery can make the difference for the team.

"Franck played the friendly against Perugia as if he was playing the Champions League final," he said.

"He's different, as Ronaldo is different. We talk of stars who excel through sacrifice. They are wonderful examples for everyone."&nbsp;

"It will be hard, very hard, but we're convinced that we will see a new great Fiorentina," said new Italian-American owner Rocco Commisso hoping to build a team who can add to their &nbsp;Serie A titles in 1956 and 1969.

Ancelotti 'outrage'

Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli, who are midtable, need to pick themselves up after Kalidou Koulibaly's own goal handed Juventus a 4-3 win in Turin last weekend.

But they play their first match at home this season against Sampdoria with doubts over whether their San Paolo stadium will be ready in time.

The Serie A outfit played their opening two league games away from home, at Fiorentina and Juventus, due to the reconstruction of the stadium.

Ancelotti said he was "outraged" after seeing the state of the changing rooms midweek with their Champions League opener against Liverpool next Tuesday.

The contractors have however insisted the work will be completed by Friday.

Inter Milan welcome Udinese to the San Siro also looking to extend their maximum points with Antonio Conte's side ahead of both Juventus and Torino &nbsp;on goal difference.

Inter's new star signing Romelu Lukaku will be looking to score for a third consecutive game a week after monkey chants against the Belgian tarnished their 2-1 triumph at Cagliari.

Inter are also in Champions League duty against Slavia Prague at the San Siro on Tuesday and need to avoid a slip-up against Udinese who shocked AC Milan 1-0 in their season opener.

Torino host new boys Lecce, having also won their first two matches, as Atalanta head for Genoa before travelling to Dinamo Zagreb for their first ever Champions League game next week.

Maurizio Sarri back, Ronaldo firing on all cylinders as Juventus head for Fiorentina

Manchester City cruised to the top of the Premier League with a 4-0 win over Brighton on Saturday as Manchester United and Chelsea lost further ground in disappointing draws with Southampton and Sheffield United.

Leicester moved up to third as the Foxes unbeaten start to the season continued in a 3-1 win over Bournemouth, while victories for Crystal Palace and West Ham take them into a share of fourth.

City win comes at a cost

Liverpool can move back above City should they continue the only 100 percent start left in the Premier League later at Burnley, but City were never in danger of dropping points at the Etihad as Kevin de Bruyne tapped home David Silva's cut-back after just two minutes.

Victory came at a cost for Pep Guardiola's men as Aymeric Laporte was stretchered off with a knee injury that looks certain to rule him out of winning a first cap for France in upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers.

"He has gone to the hospital. Tomorrow we will know exactly what he has. I think he will be out for a while," said City manager Pep Guardiola on Laporte's injury.

Aguero soon made the game safe by blasting high into the net just before the break and produced another sublime finish to curl into the top corner for his second 10 minutes into the second-half.

Substitute Bernardo Silva then rounded off the scoring for the champions.

"I love to see opposite teams play that way - that have that courage," added Guardiola. "They had chances to score as well but we were clinical."

United slump continues

How United must wish they had some of their local rivals firepower as Southampton clung on for a 1-1 draw at St. Mary's despite playing the last 17 minutes plus stoppage time a man down after Kevin Danso's red card.

Daniel James had given the visitors the perfect start with his third goal in four appearances for United, but Jannik Vestergaard headed home an equaliser just before the hour mark.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have now failed to win in their last three games and won just one of their last 10 dating back to last season.

"We've been dominating, creating chances and just haven't been clinical in front of goal to win the games," said Solskjaer.

"It's not a dip in form, (but) it's a dip in results definitely."

Blades blunt Chelsea

After scoring his first Chelsea goals away to Norwich last weekend, Tammy Abraham thought he had given the Blues all three points at home to newly-promoted Sheffield United by scoring twice more before the break.

However, the Blades hit back at the start of the second-half through Callum Robinson and Kurt Zouma's own goal a minute from time earned the visitors an unlikely point in a 2-2 draw.

"We have to take responsibility, we allowed that to happen. It was on us to take the game away from them and we allowed them to get back into it," said Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, who is still waiting to win his first match in charge at Stamford Bridge.

"If we can't go on and get a third goal that's something we have to work on, this is the Premier League, it's ruthless."

As United and Chelsea stumble, Leicester are the closest challengers to the top two, but Brendan Rodgers's men were also lucky Youri Tielemans did not see red in another controversial VAR call.

The Belgian should have been sent-off for a high challenge on Callum Wilson with Leicester leading 2-1 early in the second-half, but, after a VAR review, the original decision to let Tielemans escape unpunished stood before Jamie Vardy secured the points with his second goal of the game.

"He missed the ball and went over the top and went on to my ankle. If it's not clear and obvious then I don't know what is," said an angry Wilson.

Crystal Palace backed up their shock victory at Old Trafford last weekend with a 1-0 win over 10-man Aston Villa thanks to Jordan Ayew's goal 17 minutes from time.

West Ham also have seven points from four games as goals either side of half-time from Sebastien Haller and Andriy Yarmolenko secured a comfortable 2-0 over Norwich.

Watford got their first point of the season, but remain bottom after a 1-1 draw at Newcastle.

Manchester City go top as Man Utd, Chelsea flop again

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante has not recovered from an ankle injury and will miss Saturday's Premier League encounter with Sheffield United, manager Frank Lampard said on Friday.

The 28-year-old missed the 3-2 victory over promoted Norwich City last weekend and was not called up by France manager Didier Deschamps for next month's Euro 2020 qualifiers against Albania and Andorra.

"Kante is not fit. It's a continuation of his ankle problem. He won't be travelling with the French squad either," Lampard told a news conference.

"I had a conversation with Deschamps and we both agreed it was the best thing for him, so let's try and get him fit over the break.

"It's a setback, but my focus is on making sure he's okay. He's had four years of constant football at an incredibly high level, energy level, output level. We have to get it right."

Spain forward Pedro, who suffered a hamstring problem in the pre-match warm-up at Norwich, is expected to return to fitness following the international break.

First-choice central defender Antonio Rudiger has been on the sidelines since suffering a knee injury last season and is edging closer to full match fitness.

Victory at Carrow Road was Chelsea's first under new manager Lampard and the former England international said a weight had been lifted from their shoulders.

"It certainly helped, not just me but the staff as well to get the first win. We have a huge uplift in that and there's a lot to work on. We can't rest on that win," Lampard added.

The former England international is well aware of the tactical strengths of Chris Wilder's United side, having faced them in the Championship (second-tier) while managing Derby County last season.

The Blades have four points from three games but were beaten by Leicester City last time out.

"They've started well. I was very impressed with them last season, the job Chris has done can't be under-appreciated," Lampard added.

"I look forward to going up against them... (tactics) is where they caught the eye last season and I enjoyed the battle. It gives you a lot of threats."

Arsenal drawn with Eintracht in Europa League, Man Utd head to Kazakhstan

Frank Lampard celebrated his first victory as Chelsea manager with Tammy Abraham's double inspiring a 3-2 win by his youthful side over Norwich City in a pulsating Premier League encounter at Carrow Road on Saturday.

The 21-year-old Abraham struck on the half-volley in the third minute and, after a see-saw contest in which newly-promoted Norwich twice fought back from a goal down, he proved the match-winner with another superb strike in the 68th minute.

Teemu Pukki continued his dazzling start to the season by netting a league-leading fifth goal for the Canaries but it was to prove in vain as the victory provided much-needed relief for Lampard, one of Chelsea's greatest players.

Lampard finally got off the mark at the fourth attempt after a loss at Manchester United, defeat to Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup and a draw with Leicester City.

Chelsea, fielding a starting line-up with an average age of 24 -- the club’s youngest in the Premier League since February 1994 -- took the lead early when an overlapping Cesar Azpilicueta drifted a perfect cross from the right to the feet of the unmarked Abraham, who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Norwich struck back quickly, with Emiliano Buendia finding Pukki, who squared from near the left post for 21-year-old midfielder Todd Cantwell to score from close range.

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount made it 2-1 with a fine 17th-minute goal but 13 minutes later Buendia's fine through ball put in the prolific Finn Pukki, who beat Kepa Arrizabalaga from a tight angle despite the Chelsea keeper getting a hand to the ball.

Chelsea looked more assured after the break and their pressure told. Mateo Kovacic found Abraham, who rounded two Norwich defenders before firing home the winner from outside the box.

Abraham became the youngest player to score twice in a Premier League fixture for Chelsea since 1998.

"It is something I have always dreamed about doing, to score for my childhood club, to get into the first team and to start scoring goals," he said. "I am just happy I can help my team."

The win was a welcome relief for Lampard, who said: "Our performances haven't given us what we deserved so far -- but today it did.

"It was a tough test and Norwich will get a lot of points here because they are a good side. The two goals we gave away I didn't like but there were lots of good elements to our play and I'm really pleased.

"I'm particularly pleased for Tammy and he scored two good goals and the winning goal but I want to talk about all the players today as we controlled the game on a hot day."

Abraham became the youngest player to score twice in a Premier League fixture for Chelsea since 1998. "It is something I have always dreamed about doing, to score for my childhood club, to get into the first team and to start scoring goals," he said. "I am just happy I can help my team." The win was a welcome relief for Lampard, who said: "Our performances haven't given us what we deserved so far -- but today it did.

Lampard earns first win as Chelsea boss at Norwich

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham admits he used criticism of his difficult start to the season to fuel his <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/tammy-abraham-double-fires-chelsea-to-first-win-of-lampards-reign-245355">match-winning display at Norwich</a>.

Abraham's brace fired Frank Lampard to his first Premier League victory as Chelsea manager and erased some of the doubts about his misfiring strikers.

None of Chelsea's forwards had scored in the Premier League this term until Saturday when Abraham bagged his first goals for the club in the 3-2 win.

It was a special afternoon for Abraham, who is one of Chelsea's prized homegrown assets.

Loan spells at Bristol City, Swansea and Aston Villa helped Abraham hone his craft, but when he missed his penalty in the European Super Cup shoot-out defeat against Liverpool, the 21-year-old was racially abused on social media.

It was a nasty experience for Abraham, who is aware of the doubters and is determined to silence them.

"I have always believed in myself," Abraham told Chelsea's official website.

"I know I have had a bit of a sticky time at the start of the season, but I'm someone who doesn't let that affect me. It drives me on.

"Now I have scored two good goals and hopefully I can keep scoring for Chelsea.

"This is football at the end of the day. You just have to enjoy it as much as you can. It's not a long career, so while you're out there you just have to give your best and just enjoy it."

Abraham opened the scoring with a fine finish on three minutes, with fellow youngster Mason Mount also hitting the back of the net in an entertaining first half which saw Norwich draw level twice through Todd Cantwell and Teemu Pukki.

After scoring his first goal Abraham, who settled the contest with a well-taken second-half strike, celebrated by embracing Lampard and paid tribute to his new boss.

"It's always nice to have that support behind you, especially how he supports the young lads," he added.

"He gives us confidence. When a coach believes in you, you just want to do your best and give 100 per cent."

Chelsea's Tammy Abraham inspired by criticism

Tammy Abraham fired Chelsea to their first win of the Frank Lampard era as the young striker's double clinched a 3-2 victory against Norwich on Saturday.

Lampard had gone three games without a win in all competitions since he took over as Chelsea manager, but the Blues legend finally got off the mark thanks to his faith in Abraham.

Abraham had failed to score in his three previous appearances this term, but the 21-year-old striker bagged his first goal for the club to put Chelsea ahead in the sunshine at Carrow Road.

A pulsating encounter saw Todd Cantwell equalise for Norwich before Mason Mount restored Chelsea's advantage.

Teemu Pukki's fifth goal in three games this season brought Norwich back on level terms before half-time, only for Abraham to give Chelsea the points with his predatory second half finish.

After a thrashing at Manchester United and a draw with Leicester in Chelsea's first two Premier League matches, Lampard will have been encouraged by the displays of Abraham and Mount.

He has pinned his hopes on the youngsters to lead Chelsea through a potentially difficult season that sees the club under a transfer ban and without their best player following Eden Hazard's move to Real Madrid.

While Chelsea have now conceded nine goals in four games in all competitions under Lampard, the former England midfielder will hope his team's attacking potential keeps them afloat.

When Pedro suffered a hamstring injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Ross Barkley, it left Lampard to send out the youngest start league line-up for Chelsea in 25 years at an average age of 24 years and 208 days.

Abraham was one of the youngsters Lampard had backed to shine as he replaced Olivier Giroud after being benched against Leicester last weekend.

Subjected to racist abuse on social media after missing the penalty which saw Chelsea lose the European Super Cup penalty shoot-out against Liverpool recently, Abraham took just three minutes to reward Lampard for his decision.

Cesar Azpilicueta whipped over a precise cross and Abraham alertly drifted away from the Norwich defence to drill a fine first-time strike past Tim Krul from 10 yards.

Touchline celebrations

Abraham, who flourished on loan at second tier Aston Villa last season, celebrated by sprinting to the touchline to hug Lampard as the pair were mobbed by their team-mates.

Three minutes later, Chelsea's creaky defence was exposed by Emiliano Buendia's burst into the penalty area.

Buendia found Pukki, fresh from last weekend's hat-trick against Newcastle, and this time the prolific Finland striker was the provider with a low cross that Cantwell turned in from close-range.

Lampard's team responded in the 17th minute when Norwich were caught in possession outside their own area and Christian Pulisic fed Mount, the 20-year-old midfielder cutting inside and firing home for his second goal of the season.

Andreas Christensen's point-blank header was superbly pushed over by Krul and Norwich were back on level terms in the 31st minute.

Buendia played a pass to Pukki and, with Chelsea's defenders slow to react, the former Celtic forward demonstrated why he has taken the Premier League by storm with an angled shot that evaded Kepa Arrizabalaga's limp attempt to save.

Mount and Pulisic were both narrowly off target, while Azpilicueta sliced over and Emerson shot straight at Krul as Chelsea pressed hard after the interval.

Azpilicueta appealed in vain for a penalty after a challenge from Marco Stiepermann, but Chelsea's pressure was rewarded in the 68th minute.

Picked out by Mateo Kovacic, Abraham left Grant Hanley and Jamal Lewis in his wake as he jinked past the Norwich defenders before slamming a fierce strike past Krul's mistimed dive.

Norwich's Ben Godfrey headed against the bar moments later, while Chelsea were denied a fourth goal when Kurt Zouma's effort was disallowed by VAR for Giroud's foul on Krul.

Tammy Abraham double fires Chelsea to first win of Lampard's reign

Defender David Luiz said he decided to move from Chelsea to Premier League rivals Arsenal for a different challenge after an "honest conversation" with manager Frank Lampard about the Stamford Bridge club's new direction.

Luiz, 32, made a deadline day move across London to Arsenal where he signed a two-year contract after spending three seasons in a second stint with Chelsea. He made his Arsenal debut last weekend in a 2-1 home win over Burnley.

With Chelsea operating under a FIFA transfer ban, Lampard's policy has been to build the side with younger players, choosing to start Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma in central defence in his first two league games.

"Everyone knows I was so happy in Chelsea and won many trophies there. I had a real honest conversation with Lamps and Lamps had different ideas for his plans for the year," Luiz told reporters.

"So the best way for me to respect the club where I can was to move on, try a new challenge and give him the opportunity to do his job.

"I'm so happy here as since the first day I felt welcome. This is a big club and I want to be here and see it shine on the pitch and outside."

Luiz said he could have remained at Stamford Bridge, where he had signed a new two-year contract extension at the end of last season after helping the club finish third in the league, but chose to seek a new challenge.

"I am a guy with ambition and that is why I moved," Luiz added. "I could have chosen a comfortable zone and got money and be cool and that is it.

"But I like a new a challenge and new things in my life."

Moved to Arsenal to experience new challenge, says David Luiz

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard insisted his young squad will need time to develop after blowing a bright start to draw 1-1 at home to Leicester on Sunday.

Mason Mount gave Lampard the dream start on his first match in charge at Stamford Bridge after just seven minutes.

However, Chelsea failed to take advantage of their dominance in the opening quarter and could easily have lost the game after Wilfred Ndidi's equaliser for the Foxes as Leicester had by far the better chances.

Chelsea have now failed to win in each of Lampard's first three games as manager after losing 4-0 to Manchester United last weekend and on penalties to Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup in midweek.

"The first 25 minutes were fast, we had quality. We could have scored more goals and I was delighted at that start," said Lampard.

"It was up to us to keep that momentum up and we didn't. We needed to keep the pressure up and we didn't. There will always be things to work on, it's early on in the season but we have to remember we need to get points and improve."

Lampard has given the likes of Mount and Tammy Abraham a chance to shine with the Blues banned for signing new players this summer and wants his side to be more clinical.

"It's very early for us. We have to be patient as we are working towards something," he added.

"Two or three-nil would have taken the game away from them but we didn't take those chances. That's the story of our season so far. We need to be more clinical, for sure. It is defining."

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers was also disappointed at his side's failure to take their chances with James Maddison and Jamie Vardy missing great opportunities.

"I'm happy with the level of our football, the speed of our game and the only disappointment was we should've won the match," said Rodgers, who assumed responsibility for Ndidi's mistake that led to Mount's opener.

The Nigerian international was caught in possession on the edge of his own box, leaving Mount with just Kasper Schmeichel to beat.

"I'm disappointed with the goal, but I assume responsibility with that as I ask the players to build the game. When they make mistakes it is my fault."

Frank Lampard pleads for patience after slow Chelsea start

After successive defeats in his opening two competitive games in charge, Blues legend Lampard is desperate to get his reign up and running with three points this weekend.

The 41-year-old, Chelsea's record goal-scorer, is certain to get a hero's welcome from his adoring fans despite the frustrating start to the season.

Both performances featured moments of promise for Chelsea, but Lampard knows he will be judged on results, making it essential to avoid a third consecutive defeat when Leicester visit west London.

"I'm proud to manage this club. I've been back a few times and had great support," Lampard said.

"It will be an emotional, special day for me but the important thing is trying to get the three points and that's what I am really worried about."
