Contrary to reports emerging from the crash site and forensic documents stating that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota’s car was over-speeding before it lost control and burst into flames, killing those sitting inside, the latest update from an onlooker, a truck driver, tells a different story. Jose Azevedo, the truck driver who witnessed the accident, revealed what happened with Jota’s Lamborghini Huracan that rolled off the highway. In a video message to the UK outlet Daily Mail, Jose said, “The family has my word that they were not speeding. I could see the make of the car, the colour of the car. I drive this road every day, Monday through Saturday.” He also revealed that he filmed the accident but immediately shut the camera off and ran towards the burning car, wondering if he could help anyone, but it was too late by then. Also read | Messi continues hot run in MLS with brace in Miami’s win over New England “I filmed it, stopped, tried to help, but unfortunately, there was nothing I could do. The truck driver also revealed that he filmed the accident but immediately shut the camera off and ran towards the burning car, wondering if he could help anyone, but it was too late by then.

At least six people, including three firefighters, have been killed after a truck carrying gas collided with a car in Mongolia’s capital on Wednesday (Jan 24), said local officials. More than 600 firefighters and 100 vehicles were sent to the scene and eventually, the fire was extinguished. A herd of wild elephants in Malaysia caused chaos on a major highway, trampling a car after it collided with a baby elephant. The white Perodua Axia, driven by a 48-year-old man with his wife and 23-year-old son, hit the elephant calf while navigating a left bend on the highway from Penang to Terengganu.

The collision led to the calf falling to the ground, prompting the rest of the herd, consisting of five elephants, to rush towards the car and trample it. Photos show extensive damage to the vehicle's front and sides, with all windows smashed and side doors caved in.

While it remains unclear if the family was inside the car during the incident, authorities reported no deaths or serious injuries. The herd left the scene after the calf regained footing, reported CNN.

The incident is a reminder of the existing challenges in Malaysia's rapid development of highways, leading to habitat loss for wild elephants.

With reduced forest cover, elephants often venture onto roads in search of food, increasing the likelihood of collision with vehicles.

Conservationists stress on the need for caution on highways, given the regular presence of elephant herds.

Warning signs about elephant crossings are displayed along many highways, especially in the north.

Despite such measures, accidents persist, posing threats to both elephants and human commuters.

Previous incidents include a 2017 case where a speeding car was believed to have killed a baby elephant on a highway.

Conservation groups like the Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME) work towards addressing these challenges. The broader context involves ongoing efforts to balance development with wildlife conservation.

Subsequently, a man close to the pool can be seen jumping in and swimming towards the car, while others are seen following his suit climbing down from the edge of the rock surface and moving towards the car.

WATCH | India: Father-daughter duo saved from drowning by fellow picnickers after car plunges into waterfall

Rishabh Pant is still recovering months after being in a horrific car accident on December 30, 2022. As per the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) recent release, the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has started batting and keeping wickets in the nets in the National Cricket Academy (NCA). While he may be recovering at a rapid pace, he is likely to miss the forthcoming ODI World Cup at home, as the board will be eager to not rush his return. As per Ishant Sharma, India's veteran pacer, Pant may also miss next year's Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ishant, who is part of the commentary panel for the India-West Indies Tests, feels Pant might not play next year's IPL as well. In his absence, his franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) was led by David Warner this year and the one-time runners-up failed to reach the playoffs. They finished at the ninth spot with five wins from 14 encounters.

'Not easy for a wicketkeeper and batter'

"I feel we might not see Rishabh Pant in the next IPL as well because it is not a small injury. It was a very serious accident. He has just started batting and wicketkeeping and to run and turn after that, there are a lot of things, which is not easy for a wicketkeeper and a batter," Ishant told Jio Cinema.

Ishant, who has represented India in 105 Tests, added, "The good thing is that he didn't have a second surgery. If he had undergone a second surgery, he would have been out for even longer. He has had one surgery now but I don't think he will be fit for the World Cup for sure. Hopefully, if he gets fit for the IPL, it will be great."

Apart from Pant, India have several injury concerns at the moment. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Prasidh Krishna are also in recovery mode from their respective injuries ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup at home, to be held in October-November this year.

Pant's ardent fans will hope for his quick return but the Indian team will like to take it slowly with him, post his horrific car crash. The star player remains India's preferred keeper-batter across formats and his return is keenly awaited. Talking about his IPL franchise, the DC unit will hope for him to return in IPL 2024 as his absence was severely felt by them in this year's edition.

Tragic! California man killed by car while helping ducks cross road

At least eight people were mauled to death in Brownsville, Texas, on Sunday after an SUV ploughed into a group of people, at a bus stop near a homeless shelter. The man accused and later identified has been charged with eight counts of manslaughter, said the local police chief on Monday (May 8). This comes as the investigators are now trying to determine if the crash was intentional.

The man, later identified as 34-year-old, George Alvarez, seemingly lost control after he ran a red light on early Sunday and ploughed into a crowd of mostly Venezuelans outside a migrant centre, said the Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda said at a press conference, on Monday. The vehicle hit 18 people after which it flipped on its side.

According to the police chief, six people died on the scene and 12 people were critically injured, it was not until later that officials confirmed that the death toll had risen to eight. The driver attempted to flee the scene after impact but was held down by several bystanders, he added. Alvarez has now been charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, said Sauceda.

Meanwhile, the officials are also awaiting toxicology reports on Alvarez to see if the accused was intoxicated at the time of the incident. The police chief also said that there was no motive that he could discuss, but that the authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the crash was intentional. Alvarez has an extensive criminal history, said the police chief and was being held on a bail set at $3.6 million.

“George Alvarez is a Brownsville local with an extensive rap sheet,” said Sauceda, while displaying a long list of previous charges against the accused which included assault, burglary and driving while intoxicated.

“It has been a very tiresome process but we are deeply committed to doing and accomplishing,” said Sauceda, adding that the police department is also working with the Venezuelan government and other embassies. This also comes after the Venezuelan government, in a statement on Monday, called for an investigation into whether it was a crime of hate and xenophobia.

At least six people were killed and dozens of others injured on Monday (May 1) after a series of car crashes along Interstate 55 in southern Illinois, United States during a dust storm, said the state police. Up to 60 passenger vehicles and about 20 commercial vehicles were involved in both directions of the I-55.

Joletta Hill, chief deputy for the Montgomery County Coroner's Office confirmed the six deaths from the accidents, reported Reuters. According to the police, the dust from newly ploughed fields took over the highway.

At least two commercial vehicles caught fire “as a result of the crashes,” said Ryan Starrick from Illinois State Police, in a press briefing. He added, “At this time, we have reports of more than 30 people being transported to the hospital and multiple fatalities. The cause of the crash was excessive winds blowing dirt from farm field across the highway leading to zero visibility”.

However, the crash is being placed under further investigation, said the official. Starrick, in a later update, said there were at least six dead and more than 30 people were hospitalised with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening, reported CNN. Those injured include children and adults who ranged in age from two to 80 years.

The incident took place shortly after 11:00 am (local time). The highway remained closed in both directions several hours later, reported Reuters. The crashes occurred in both the southbound and the northbound lanes. The state police official said the pileup was near the town of Farmersville, over 300 kilometres away from Chicago.

The condition of those injured was not immediately clear. The Illinois Department of Transportation had also said I-55 was closed in both directions between Divernon and Farmersville, Illinois in Sangamon and Montgomery counties. “Traffic is being diverted onto the frontage road. Motorists are urged to take an alternative routes,” said the IDOT.

US Representative Nikki Budzinski of Illinois took to Twitter and wrote, “My team and I are closely following the devastating crash on I-55 as authorities learn more. Please be safe as this situation continues to unfold.”

US: At least six killed, dozens injured after dust storm in Illinois causes highway pileup

At least five migrants and a Greek motorist were killed in a car crash on a highway near the border between Greece and Turkey, on Saturday (April 15), the local police told the news agency AFP. The car, in question, was carrying 10 migrants when it met with an accident with another vehicle that had a 46-year-old driver, who was also killed, at the wheels.

According to the report, the car was carrying migrants whose nationalities were not immediately clear, and was travelling at a high speed on the wrong side of the road to avoid a police checkpoint when it slammed into a four-wheeler, whose driver was also killed, as per media reports. Meanwhile, the other five migrants and the driver were taken to the hospital after sustaining injuries, said the police.

Recently, Greece has witnessed a surge in the number of accidents similar to the one that took place on Saturday. This comes as the Greek authorities have ramped up patrols in the Aegean Sea which has reportedly made it more difficult for migrants to cross River Evros to reach the islands which has since led traffickers to take them by road.

Earlier this year, Greece said it prevented around 260,000 migrants from crossing its border with Turkey in 2022. At the time, Turkey had said that it adhered to international law, but if a migrant qualifies for refugee status they cannot be accused of having broken the law by crossing a border.

Athens does not have the best record when it comes to the issues relating to migrants, as many human rights organisations have accused Greek officials of illegal pushback and sending them back to Turkey. Athens has steadfastly denied these claims.

However, in a bid to reduce the flow of migrants, conservative Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, earlier this month urged the European Union to “seriously consider” providing financial aid to help extend an anti-migrant steel fence along the border with Turkey.

The fence, in question, is a five-metre high steel barrier, currently 38 kilometres long and Athens wants to extend it by 35 kilometres and add a total of 100 kilometres, in the next three years.
