Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brij Bhushan Saran Singh has claimed that it was his name that helped wrestler Vinesh Phogat win the Julana seat in the Haryana Assembly election.&nbsp;

Phogat, contesting the election on a Congress ticket, emerged victorious by 6,105 votes, beating BJP's Yogesh Kumar.&nbsp;

"If she wins by using my name, it means I am a great man. At least my name has enough power to help her sail through," Singh was quoted as saying by news wire agency PTI.&nbsp;

"Wherever (Vinesh) Phogat goes, destruction follows her, and it will happen in the future too. She may have won the election by herself but Congress is completely doomed," he added.&nbsp;

The former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief was referring to Congress being unable to remove BJP from power in the state. Despite exit polls predicting a Congress sweep, the BJP managed to win 48 seats and secure a third consecutive term.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Phogat emphasised that her victory vindicated her struggle for truth.&nbsp;

"This is the fight of every girl, every woman who chooses the path to fight. This is the victory of every struggle, truth. I will maintain the love and trust that this country has given me," the&nbsp;Congress politician said.

BJP not only won the&nbsp;majority on its own but it also managed to better its seats tally from the last two elections.&nbsp;In 2019, BJP only won 40 seats and formed a coalition government with the JJP. Meanwhile, in 2014, during the peak of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity, the BJP managed to secure 47 seats.&nbsp;

Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh slammed Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and other senior Congress leaders on Saturday (September 07). He accused Congress of orchestrating the wrestlers' protest against him, which began two years ago, and centred around allegations of sexual harassment.

His comments followed the political entry of wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who joined the Congress on Friday after leading last year’s protest against him. Singh, a former BJP MP, also accused Vinesh Phogat of cheating in her attempt to qualify for the Olympics. He said that her failure to win a medal was a form of divine retribution.

“I want to ask Vinesh Phogat whether a player can give trials in two weight categories in one day? Can the trials be paused for five hours after the weigh-in?... You did not win the wrestling; you went there by cheating. God has punished you for it," the former WFI president said.

Brij Bhushan went on to claim that Vinesh Phogat had unfairly taken another wrestler's place at the Olympics. “She went to the Olympics by taking the spot of the girl who had defeated her in the trials, and by creating a commotion. Therefore, whatever happened to her was justified, and she deserved it,” he added.

"Haryana is the crown of India in the field of sports. And they stopped the wrestling activities for almost 2.5 years. Is it not true that Bajrang went to the Asian Games without trials? I want to ask those who are experts in wrestling," Bhushan said.

Turning his attention to Bhupinder Hooda, Singh accused the Haryana Congress leader of leading the "wrestlers' movement." He claimed that Congress members, including Bhupinder Hooda, Deepender Hooda, Priyanka Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, were behind the entire protest.

"I want to tell the people of Haryana that Bhupinder Hooda, Deepender Hooda, Bajrang or Vinesh, they were not sitting (on protest) for the respect of girls. Due to them, the daughters of Haryana are facing embarrassment. We are not responsible for it, Bhupinder Hooda and Deependra Hooda and these protesters are responsible for it,” news agency ANI quoted Brij Bhushan as saying.

Local police said that the accused driver has been taken into custody and the injured were admitted to hospital. Police said, adding that police personnel have been deployed in the area to ensure law and order.

As per a report by the news agency PTI, Colonelganj SHO Nirbhay Narayan Singh said Rehan Khan (17) and Shehzad Khan (20) who were riding on a motorcycle were hit by the vehicle near a school. They died on the spot.&nbsp;

The charge sheet accused the duo of Singh and Vinod Tomar,&nbsp;former assistant secretary of the WFI, with the offence of criminal intimidation for the offence against Victim No 1 under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

It mentioned that Tomar is accused of helping to commit the crime. Therefore, he is also facing trial for his involvement under certain sections of the IPC.

The 1,599-page charge sheet also includes statements of 44 police officials with pictures including one taken during the events in question.

In a minor relief, the court acquitted Brij Bhushan of the charges levied by the sixth wrestler.

In 2019, Brij Bhushan secured 5.81 lakh votes, while BSP's Chandradev Ram Yadav got over 3.19 lakh votes and Congress candidate Vinay Kumar Pandey got 37,132 votes.

Kaiserganj is set to vote on May 20 in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls.

<h2>Conditions imposed</h2>

The court has asked both of them not to leave the country without its prior permission and ordered them not to threaten or induce the wrestlers or complainants or indulge in any way that might impede the probe.

"Please ensure that all the conditions are meticulously followed," Jaspal said, according to Livelaw outlet

The order came two days after (July 18) the metropolitan court had granted interim bail for two days to both of them.

The judge had said the chargesheet has been filed without arrest and the accused "have cooperated with investigation".

During the hearing, public prosecutor Atul Srivastava told the judge that strict conditions must be imposed on the accused while granting bail.

The BJP MP was accused of sexual harassment by several women wrestlers and consequently, the Delhi Police filed two first information reports (FIRs) on June 2.

The complaints against the WFI chief mentioned his attempts at inappropriate touching, putting his hand over the chest of girls, moving his hand from the chest to the back and chasing them, among others.

<h2>Charges against Singh</h2>

On June 15, a chargesheet was filed against Brij Bhushan Singh under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Singh has denied all allegations, and even issued a defiant statement refuting all charges.

Singh's counsel alleged a media trial, to which the judge said he may move an application before the high court or trial court.

So what is the entire issue and will the wrestlers&nbsp;get a closure with Brij Bhushan’s arrest and trail?

<h2>What is the wrestler's protest about?</h2>

The union of wrestlers consisting of Olympic and Commonwealth Games medal winners Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and others started protest against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan. The protest began on 18 January 2023 in India’s capital Delhi at the famous Jantar Mantar where the top wrestlers along with 40 other junior and senior category wrestlers complained about the administration and unnatural behaviour of the WFI chief and his colleagues.

The female wrestler complainants accused Bhushan of groping, touching their breasts and navels without consent, stalking, intimidation, and demanding 'sexual favours' in exchange for professional help, all of which led to a 'shared sense of fear and trauma' among the women wrestlers.

However, all the allegations were denied by the WFI chief who even insisted that he is willing for a death sentence if found guilty.

<h2>Role of government and Supreme Court of India</h2>

Listening to the wrestler’s plea, the government had formed an oversight committee led by Mary Kom on 23 January 2023. The report was submitted on April 5 and was not made public which caused anger amongst the wrestlers. The committee also consisted of Babita Phogat (cousin sister of Vinesh) and stated that the witnesses were not cross-questioned. The report, according to the protesting wrestlers, had favoured the accused Brij Bhushan Singh.

The wrestlers then resumed their protest on 23 April 2023 and demanded that an First Investigation Report (FIR) be registered against Brij Bhushan, which was first denied by the Delhi Police when the oversight committee report was submitted. The Supreme Court of India then ordered Delhi Police to register an FIR against the accused WFI chief on April 28.

Two FIRs, one under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO Act) and the other for outraging modesty, were filed by the Delhi Police on 28 April. Offences under the POCSO act were cognizable, non-bailable, and require immediate arrests without a court warrant but the police did not arrest Bhushan which led to accusations of bias and unequal application of the law by many. In addition to the POCSO act, the FIRs included IPC sections 354 (assault with intent to outrage woman's modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 34 (common intention) on Bhushan.

<h2>Non-violent take by protesters</h2>

Despite FIRs, the protests intensified after the Delhi Police refused to take action against the WFI chief who is a sitting Member of Parliament (MP). Agitators who had made the national capital Delhi the epicentre of their protests made their presence felt when they planned a non-violent protest at the new parliament building on the day of its inauguration to draw government's attention on Sunday, May 28.

However, the plans of protests were foiled by the police as the force prevented the top wrestlers from reaching the site of the new parliament building.

A couple of days later, the wrestlers claimed they felt humiliated for protesting for so long and no concrete action being taken on their allegations. They went on to announce that they would immerse the&nbsp;medals they had won in international and national events in the Ganga. The&nbsp;protesters planned to&nbsp;immerse their medals in the Ganga at Har ki Pauri&nbsp;in the holy city of Haridwar (113 km from Delhi) in the Uttarakhand state of India. Vinesh, Bajrang, and Sakshi Malik were scheduled to immerse their medals in the holy river in the city considered a pilgrimage site of Hindus. However, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait intervened and convinced the wrestlers not to take such extreme steps and promised all support to them.

<h2>The fallouts of wrestlers' protest</h2>

As a consequence of the wrestler's protest, the elections of the WFI, originally scheduled to be held in June 2023 are now scheduled to be held in July. India could pay a big price for the turmoil going on with the wrestling body’s administration as the deadline to announce the squad for the Asian Games 2022 (to be held in 2023) approaches near. India still hasn’t named a squad as the trials are yet to take place at the national level which could result in wrestlers missing out on the continental tournament.

<h2>What next for Brij Bhushan?</h2>

As things stand, Brij Bhushan has been granted interim bail by a Delhi court on Tuesday, July 18 in the sexual harassment case, while his plea for regular bail is scheduled for hearing next week. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjeet Singh Jaspal granted relief to Singh and his co-accused Vinod Tomar — the suspended assistant secretary of WFI — after the prosecution did not oppose their plea for interim bail. At the time of writing, neither Brij Bhushan nor Tomar have been arrested by the Delhi Police, however, the grip of investigation could be tightened on the duo if further evidence is found against them.

As things stand, Brij Bhushan has been granted interim bail by a Delhi court on Tuesday, July 18 in the sexual harassment case, while his plea for regular bail is scheduled for hearing next week. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjeet Singh Jaspal granted relief to Singh and his co-accused Vinod Tomar — the suspended assistant secretary of WFI — after the prosecution did not oppose their plea for interim bail. As per reports, heavy police were deployed outside Bhushan's Delhi house ahead of filing the chargesheet. Besides, as promised by the Sports Ministry and agreed upon by the protesting wrestlers, the action was taken on June 15.

While more than 180 people were questioned in regard to charges levelled against Brij Bhushan Singh in a sexual harassment case, more than 25 people have recorded their statements, as per the latest reports.

Police, meanwhile, filed for a cancellation report in the POCSO case in Delhi's Patiala House Court, after the minor's father, in his latest statement, withdrew the charges against the outgoing WFI chief. A cancellation report in the same is filed due to no concrete evidence.

The court has scheduled the next hearing on July 4.

"Since the case is related to POCSO Act, the court has fixed July 4 as the next date of hearing," says public prosecutor Atul Srivastava. "In the POCSO matter, after completion of the investigation, we have submitted a police report under section 173 Cr PC requesting for a cancellation of the case based upon statements of the complainant i.e., the father of the minor victim and the victim herself," Delhi Police said, as quoted by ANI.

Earlier on Monday, former Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice Mahesh Mittal Kumar was appointed as the returning officer for the Wrestling Federation of India elections by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Joint Secretary and Acting CEO Kalyan Chaubey on Monday confirmed the appointment of Justice MM Kumar through an official letter, also authorising him (Kumar) to appoint an Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) and other staff to assist him in conducting the elections.

The elections will be critical in moulding the future of wrestling in India and deciding the federation's leadership.

In the FIR filed by six female wrestlers, one claimed that in March last year, while everyone was getting ready to pose for a team photo at the end of the trials in Lucknow for the Asian Championships, he (Brij Bhushan here) “placed his hands on my buttocks” following which she tried to move aside. Jagbir, who was also present there, and was standing a few feet away from Brij Bhushan and the complainant, verified this instance in his testimony to Delhi Police when inquired. Something wrong happened to her. I didn’t see him doing the act, but he used to keep touching wrestlers, saying come here, come and stand here. From her (complainant’s) behaviour, it was clear something was wrong that day (during the photo session),” Jagbir said, as quoted in the Indian Express. ‘…his hand was on my buttocks’ In the two FIRs filed by the Delhi Police based on complaints by women wrestlers, including a minor – whose father has now taken back the complaint, it stated there were two instances of Brij Bhushan demanding "sexual favours", while 15 cases of sexual harassment, including ten episodes of him inappropriately touching, running hands over breasts, touching the navel; and several instances of intimidation, stalking were registered. In one of the FIRs, the complainant said, “Since I was one of the tallest wrestlers, I was supposed to stand in the last row. While I was standing in the last row and waiting for the other wrestlers to take their positions, the accused came and stood alongside me. To my shock and surprise, I suddenly felt a hand on my buttock. I immediately looked back, and to my horror, the accused had placed his hands on my buttocks… I immediately tried to move away from that spot in order to protect myself from further inappropriate touching by the accused. However, when I tried moving away, I was forcibly held by my shoulder by the accused. Somehow, I managed to get free from the clutches of the accused. The Minister also assured that the wrestlers won’t be protesting until June 15 and would form an internal complaint committee to look deep into the matter.

"All FIRs against wrestlers should be taken back. Wrestlers also requested that Brij Bhushan Singh who has completed 3 terms and his associates should not be re-elected. Wrestlers will not hold any protest before 15th June," the sports minister added.
