A day after the trial began against pro-Bolosnaro rioters who stormed the Supreme Court of Brazil, the National Congress of Brazil and the Planalto Presidential Palace on January 8, the apex court has sentenced a defendant to 17 years in prison on charges including an attempted coup.

51-year-old Aecio Pereira, the accused, was unanimously convicted by the court's 11 justices who found him guilty of all five charges he faced for invading the Congress building. Pereira faced charges related to violent uprising against the rule of law, attempted coup, armed criminal conspiracy, damaging a national heritage site and aggravated property destruction.

"The (rioters') objective was to violently seize Brasilia and spread a criminal attack against the rule of law across the country," said Justice Cristiano Zanin while delivering the verdict.

During the hearing, Pereira denied any wrongdoing but an obscene video that he made on the day, wearing a T-shirt marked "Military Intervention" at the Senate president's table proved to be one of the jarring pieces of evidence against him.

His lawyers argued that Pereira, a former employee of the Sao Paulo municipal sanitation company, was unarmed and committed no acts of violence. However, in the video, he could be heard urging fellow Bolsonaro supporters to "take to the streets".

Just days after facing a deadly cyclone that killed at least 41 people in the southern region, Brazil is bracing for another storm.

According to officials, the extratropical cyclone that descended upon the state of Rio Grande do Sul, left behind a trail of destruction, with 25 people still unaccounted for.

What’s concerning is that the new storm is also expected to hit the country’s south only, which could very well exacerbate the crisis and drive the death toll higher.

Late Thursday, “a cold front will advance along the border with Uruguay and will reinforce instabilities in the southern regions of the state, expanding to northern areas between Thursday night and early Friday,” according to a warning from the state government, citing a meteorologist.

What happened last week?

A massive cyclone resulted in the unprecedented swelling of the Taquari river, which submerged whole neighbourhoods in Rio Grande do Sol, forcing many people to climb onto roofs while awaiting rescue.

According to local media, more than 10,000 people were forced to leave their homes from at least 83 municipalities.

Brazil’s south braces for another storm after facing deadly cyclone last week

Nine months after former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro's supporters stormed the Supreme Court of Brazil, the National Congress of Brazil and the Planalto Presidential Palace after his loss in the election, the country's apex court has opened the first trials.

On Wednesday (September 13), the first four accused went on trial before the Supreme Court in the capital city of Brasilia. The SC building was ransacked on January 8 by thousands of Bolsonaro supporters who allegedly attempted to overturn the election - drawing eerie similarities to the January 6 insurrection attempt by former US president Donald Trump supporters in 2021 at the US Capitol Hill.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes presiding over the case in his opening remarks said the insurrectionists had rampaged through the heart of Brazilian democracy, “showing utter contempt for the republic and imbued with the audacity of ignorance”.

“But let me be clear: they did not destroy the spirit of democracy. The enemies of freedom should know that, in the hallowed ground of this court, the permanently cultivated democratic system remains unshaken," added the judge.

Prosecutor Carlos Frederico Santos maintained a similar defiant note as he opened the case against 51-year-old Aécio Lúcio Costa Pereira, accused of being part of an “armed and anti-democratic mob”.

"We have turned the page on the days of coups. Those who embrace the spurious idea that power can be won through violence and in violation of constitutional norms must respond for the resulting crimes," Santos told the court, adding that the case was a "milestone" for the count which returned to democracy in the 1980s.

As many as 177 environmental activists were murdered across the world last year, with 60 of the killings taking place in Colombia alone, making it the deadliest place on Earth for green warriors - according to a report by London-based NGO Global Witness.

As many as 177 environmental activists were murdered across the world last year, with 60 of the killings taking place in Colombia alone, making it the deadliest place on Earth for green warriors - according to a report by London-based NGO Global Witness. While only 33 environment defenders lost their lives in the South American nation in 2021, the figure nearly doubled in 2022, signifying a disturbing trend. "This is almost double the number of killings compared to 2021, when 33 defenders lost their lives," said the report, adding that very few perpetrators of the killing are ever brought to justice. Since record-keeping began in 2012, at least 382 environmentalists have been killed in Colombia up until now. Apart from the environmentalists, the Indigenous people, small-scale farmers and members of Afro-descendant communities were also targeted in the attacks. Even the politicians in the country are not safe from those opposing the green agenda. Francia Marquez, the nation's vice president and winner of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in 2018, has already faced multiple threats on her life. In 2019, she survived an attack by gunmen who tried to kill her over her work defending her home region's water resources against mining companies. Watch | Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon falls 66% in August | WION Climate Tracker × Latin American countries top the murder chart While Colombia recorded the highest number of murders, other countries in Latin America did not fare any better. Brazil recorded 34 murders, Mexico 31 and Honduras 11. The Amazon region saw 39 killings, with many of the victims from indigenous communities. The watchdog asserted that the full scale of the killings remained unknown, primarily due to a lack of independent monitoring and restrictions on free press in many countries. Notably, in countries where green defenders are not murdered in plain sight, they often find themselves embroiled in the legal web as the pressure groups use the might of the administration to cull their voices. "The worsening climate crisis and the ever-increasing demand for agricultural commodities, fuel and minerals will only intensify the pressure on the environment -– and those who risk their lives to defend it," warned the watchdog. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva backtracked on Monday from saying Brazil would ignore a war crimes arrest warrant for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, while saying he would review Brazil's membership in the International Criminal Court.

Will Lula review Brazil's ICC membership to avoid Putin's arrest at Rio G20?

The gathering of global leaders in New Delhi for the G20 Summit concluded on Sunday with India passing on the Baton to Brazil. This year's G20 saw many notable reforms including a consensus on several issues and inclusion of the African Union. There were also many key economic takeaways as well let's take a look.

G20 Summit 2023: India-Middle East- Europe economic corridor announced

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has reversed his stance from his personal guarantee that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not face arrest at the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) summit in Rio de Janeiro. He now asserted that it would be left to the judiciary to determine Putin's fate.

President Lula has also raised questions about Brazil's involvement in the United Nations war crimes court. Lula questioned, “I want to know why we are members but not the United States, not Russia, not India, not China." “I’m not saying I’m going to leave the court. I just want to know why Brazil is a signatory," he added.

Putin notably skipped the recent G20 summit in New Delhi. Earlier, he also did not attend the BRICS summit, apparently for the same reason.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin in March over his alleged involvement in the unlawful deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia.

Russian denial

The Kremlin has denied the war crime allegations against Putin, deeming the arrest warrant "void." In retaliation, Russia issued an arrest warrant for Karim Khan, the prosecutor at The Hague-based war crimes court, adding him to their "wanted list."

Brazil is bound by the Rome Statute, which established the ICC and obliges member states to comply with its arrest warrants.

Repercussions of Lula's statements

Lula's previous assurance that Putin would not be arrested generated criticism, with some experts and observers reportedly considering it damaging and unwarranted.

“If I’m the president of Brazil and if he [Putin] comes to Brazil, there’s no way that he will be arrested," Lula reportedly said.

Amid the backlash, Lula clarified his stance during a press conference in Brazil, stressing that he does not have the authority to determine Putin's detention in Brazil.

He said that it's ultimately up to the judiciary to decide.

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has reversed his stance from his personal guarantee that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not face arrest at the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Russian denial The Kremlin has denied the war crime allegations against Putin, deeming the arrest warrant "void." In retaliation, Russia issued an arrest warrant for Karim Khan, the prosecutor at The Hague-based war crimes court, adding him to their "wanted list." PM Modi says India has 'unwavering faith' in Brazil for next G20 presidency, holds talks with President Lula

Sunday marked the conclusion of the G20 Leaders' Summit 2023, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed Brazil's President Lula da Silva the gavel to lead the group beginning on December 1 of this year. PM Modi suggested conducting a virtual session to assess the progress made on the recommendations made in New Delhi during the G20 Summit's concluding session.

Neymar surpassed Pele as Brazil's all-time top scorer with two second-half goals in a 5-1 win over Bolivia in South America's 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Friday. The 31-year-old striker went into the game level with Pele on 77 goals and had a golden opportunity to break the record in the 17th minute when Brazil were awarded a penalty.

But he looked distraught after his soft spot-kick was easily saved by Bolivia keeper Guillermo Viscarra to keep the scores goalless.

Seven minutes later, Brazil got in front when Rodrygo reacted quickly to slot home after a shot from Raphinha was parried out by Viscarra.

Brazil doubled their lead just after the break when Raphinha cut in from the left and his low shot took a slight deflection as it flew into the bottom corner.

Neymar had a hand in Brazil's third, with a clever chipped pass which was flicked on by Bruno Guimaraes into the path of Rodrygo who confidently drilled home.

Then came Neymar's moment to enter the history books as he pounced on a loose ball inside the box and tucked away his 78th goal in his 125th game for his country - raising his hands and his gaze to the skies.

Victor Abrego pulled a goal back for Bolivia, bustling through a disorganised Brazil backline before blasting an unstoppable shot past Ederson.

But there was still time for Neymar to extend his record tally, connecting with a low ball from Raphinha in stoppage time to complete the victory and a memorable night for the forward.

The 31-year-old former Barcelona striker recently moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.

Pele, who died in December aged 82, scored 77 goals for Brazil in 92 appearances between 1957 and 1971.

The win was the perfect start for new coach Fernando Diniz, who took over from predecessor Tite in the wake of the Selecao's World Cup quarter-final exit last year.

At least 27 people have died because of the extratropical cyclone in several cities in southern Brazil. More than 1,600 people have become homeless, authorities said on Wednesday. Since Monday night, the storm has struck more than 60 cities. Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite said the death toll was the state's highest due to a climate event. Leite mentioned 15 deaths occurred in the same house in Mucum, a city of 50,000 residents. He said one of those killed was a woman who was swept away by heavy torrents during a rescue attempt. "The wire broke, and she and a rescuer fell. Unfortunately, the woman did not survive and the rescuer is seriously injured," he stated. The search and rescue teams worked more in regions around the Taquari Valley, located 150 kilometres northwest of the state capital, Porto Alegre, which recorded the most victims and damage due to the flood and storm. More heavy rains will batter the state's central-south region, sparing the worst-hit areas, CNBC reported. The authorities continued flooding warnings for the Jacui Cai and Taquari rivers. Some videos showed people on the top of their houses, pleading for help as rivers overflowed their banks and wide avenues turned into fast-moving streams. Leite described the cyclone as "an absolutely out of the ordinary event." The flooding also hit Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria on Tuesday, killing at least seven people, AP reported. However, it is not the first time an extratropical storm has hit Rio Grande do Sul. Deforestation declined by 66 per cent in the Brazilian Amazon in the month of August compared to the same month last year, said the government on Tuesday (September 5), while further announcing the approval of two new indigenous reserves.

"In August, we had a reduction of 66.11 per cent in deforestation" in the share of Brazil in the biggest rainforest in the world, said Environment Minister Marina Silva, while addressing a ceremony that marked Amazon Day.

As per satellite monitoring carried out by the Space Research Institute of Brazil INPE, deforestation wiped out 1,661 square kilometres (641 square miles) in the Brazilian Amazon in August 2022, during the government of far-right Jair Bolsonaro.

"These results show the determination of the Lula administration to break the cycle of abandonment and regression seen under the previous government," Minister Silva said.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, after coming to power in January, had promised to protect the threatened Amazon whose carbon-absorbing trees have become a vital buffer against global warming.

As anticipation builds, the international community eagerly awaits confirmation from leaders, understanding that attendance dynamics are shaped by geopolitics and domestic priorities.

Delving into the annals of G20 Summit history reveals a remarkable consistency – since 2010, there hasn’t been a single instance where all member countries attended at the head of state/head of government (HOS/HOG) or leaders level. This pattern underscores the complexity of factors influencing leaders’ decisions to attend these pivotal gatherings.

The variability in attendance becomes even more striking when examining specific instances of countries being represented below the leadership level. On six occasions, a single leader from a country was absent (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017), while on five occasions, two leaders chose not to attend (2010, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019).

The 2021 Rome Summit stands out as an anomaly, with a record-breaking six leaders skipping the G20 meeting. This occurred even as the world was recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when leaders faced critical domestic challenges.

In contrast, the 2022 Bali Summit saw three leaders absent, overshadowed by the Ukraine conflict. Notably, this summit marked the first time the traditional “leaders’ family photo” was absent, as Western leaders hesitated to stand alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Examining individual country data reveals a spectrum of commitment to G20 Summit attendance. Nations such as Canada, Germany, India, Italy, South Korea, Turkey, the UK, the USA, and the European Union have consistently upheld leadership-level attendance, underscoring their dedication to the global stage.

In contrast, some nations have experienced sporadic attendance. Mexico, for instance, has been represented by a minister since 2018 instead of its president.

Argentina, Australia, Brazil, and Russia each have had two instances of lower-level representation, while China, France, Indonesia, Japan, and South Africa have experienced a single such occurrence. A notable exception is Saudi Arabia, which attended G20 summits below the leadership level on nine occasions, including one instance featuring a Minister of State without portfolio in 2017.

Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn’t attended a G20 summit in person since the 2019 Osaka summit. He was notably absent from the Italy (2021) and Indonesia (2022) summits and is set to skip the upcoming India (2023) summit. Just like last year, Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Lavrov this year.

The G20 Summit, elevated to the leaders’ level in 2008, has continued to evolve as a pivotal diplomatic forum. With two summits held in 2009 and 2010, the rotation, after India extends to Brazil in 2024, South Africa in 2025, and the United States in 2026.

The Brazilian police on Thursday (August 24) raided the home of former president Jair Bolsonaro's youngest son Renan in connection with a money-laundering investigation. Renan, 25, works as a staffer for a federal senator from Santa Catarina. In a statement, his lawyer Admar Gonzaga said that the 25-year-old's home in Balneario Camboriu was searched by the police, and a cell phone, hard drive, and notebooks were seized. Gonzaga said that Renan was surprised by the raid, adding, "He was not taken for questioning or subject to any other measures." Citing local media reports, the news agency AFP reported that raids also targeted Renan's shooting instructor, Maciel Carvalho, who is the main suspect in the investigation. Raids were also carried out in Brasilia. AFP reported that authorities were probing allegations of larceny, forgery, tax evasion, and money laundering in connection with suspected "ghost" companies. Renan faced police probe in 2021 In 2021, Renan faced a police investigation and was questioned over alleged bribes by business executives seeking government contracts. Jair Bolsonaro's other three sons have also faced legal headaches. Bolsonaro himself faces investigations over the alleged embezzlement of luxury jewelry and other expensive official gifts from foreign governments during his presidency as well as riots by supporters who refused to accept his 2022 election defeat to successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. On August 19, police probed Bolsonaro's personal finances and communications. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized investigators to access confidential phone and bank records of Bolsonaro and his wife Michelle. Taking to Instagram, Michelle said, "Why break my banking and tax secrecy? Just ask me. It's becoming increasingly clear that this political persecution ... is aimed at tarnishing my family name and making me give up. They won't! I am at peace."
