Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday (Feb 18) accused Israel of committing "genocide" against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

He further drew a comparison between Israeli military actions and Adolf Hitler's campaign to exterminate the Jewish people.

Lula, while attending an African Union summit, told reporters that what was happening in the Gaza Strip "isn't a war, it's a genocide".

"It's not a war of soldiers against soldiers. It's a war between a highly prepared army and women and children," added the veteran leftist.

"What's happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people hasn't happened at any other moment in history. Actually, it has happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews."

<h2>Netanyahu calls Lula's comments 'shameful and grave'</h2>

Deeming Lula's remarks as "shameful and grave", Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his government had called in Brazil's ambassador in protest.

Netanyahu released a statement saying that the Brazilian President's comments were "Holocaust trivialisation and an attempt to harm the Jewish people and the right of Israel to defend itself".

"The comparison between Israel to the Holocaust of the Nazis and Hitler is crossing a red line," he said in a statement.

"Israel is fighting to defend itself and ensure its future until total victory and it is doing that while upholding international law."

"I have decided with Foreign Minister (Israel) Katz to summon the Brazilian ambassador in Israel for an immediate reproach."

Katz took to his official X account and said that the meeting would take place on Monday (Feb 19).

Brazil’s federal police, on Thursday (Feb 8) sought to seize former President Jair Bolsonaro’s passport and arrest some of his closest aides for allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2022 election, reported Reuters citing sources.&nbsp;

<h2>Bolsonaro to surrender passport</h2>

The police said that they were carrying out dozens of search and seizure operations and executing four arrest warrants to target a “criminal organization involved in the attempted coup,” that would have kept Bolsonaro in power after his election defeat.&nbsp;

The coup attempt in question was when thousands of supporters of the former president stormed the presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court last year in January after Bolsanaro lost to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.&nbsp;

However, the former president was not himself the target of a search but was ordered to forfeit his passport, an officer with knowledge of the operation told the Associated Press.

The federal police said that they were carrying out 33 searches and seeking four arrests in eight states and Brasilia, the country’s capital.&nbsp;

The police also said that the group under investigation prepared to claim fraud in the 2022 election, even before voting took place, “in order to enable and legitimize a military intervention.”

The raids, authorized by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Morae, also ordered that multiple suspects – who were not named – be suspended from public duties and surrender their passports within 24 hours.

Fabio Wajngarten, Bolsonaro’s lawyer, took to X and confirmed that the former president would comply with the order. The former president has already been ruled politically ineligible until 2030 for spreading election falsehoods and is facing several criminal probes.&nbsp;

Search warrants were also issued for properties linked to Walter Braga Netto, Bolsonaro’s former running mate; Augusto Heleno, his former national security adviser; former Defense Minister Paulo Nogueira Batista and former Justice Minister Anderson Torres, among others, reported Reuters citing sources.&nbsp;

<h2>Lula responds</h2>

Amid the ongoing investigation and raids, the incumbent president said the coup attempt had to be investigated to keep it from happening again. Notably, the riots came a week after Lula’s inauguration in January 2023.&nbsp;

Bolsonaro, who was in the United States at the time of the riots has repeatedly denied responsibility and called the investigation politically motivated. When asked about the investigation during a radio interview, on Thursday, Lula said it wasn’t his place to comment about a sealed investigation.

“A lot of people should be investigated, because it is concrete fact that there was an attempted coup, there was a policy of disrespecting democracy, there was an attempt to destroy something we built so many years ago, which is the democratic process,” he added.&nbsp;

“Without Bolsonaro there would have been no coup attempt," he further said.

In a tragic incident reported by the New York Post, a 46-year-old man from Brazil, Magno Sergio Gomes, lost his life after consuming poisonous pufferfish, known for its deadly venom. The fish was given to him as a gift by a friend, and the exact source remains unknown. Magno's sister, Myrian Gomes Lopes, shared that neither Magno nor his friend had previous experience cleaning pufferfish.

Magno and his friend, unfamiliar with handling such a fish, decided to cut it, remove the liver, boil it, and eat it with lemon juice.

Within an hour, both fell seriously ill. Myrian recounted, "Magno started to feel numb in his mouth," prompting him to drive himself to the hospital. It was there that the severity of the situation became apparent as "the numbness spread, and he went into cardiac arrest for 8 minutes."

<h2>Potent toxin identified: Tetrodotoxin</h2>

The US Centre for Disease Control identified Magno's condition as resulting from tetrodotoxin, an extremely potent toxin primarily found in the liver and gonads of pufferfish and other marine species.

This substance, nearly 1,000 times more lethal than cyanide, serves as a predator deterrent for the blowfish.

There is no known antidote for this toxin, which interferes with nerve-to-muscle signals, leading to muscle paralysis and potential fatality.

Magno, facing the debilitating effects of tetrodotoxin, was placed on life support. Despite enduring 35 days in the hospital, the toxin's impact on his system proved fatal.

Myrian revealed that doctors attributed his death to poisoning, which rapidly affected his head. Seizures, occurring three days after admission, significantly impacted his brain, leaving little hope for recovery.

While Magno's friend survived the ordeal, he faces challenges with his legs. Myrian shared, "He's not walking very well. He was neurologically impacted, but he is recovering." The incident highlights the dangers associated with consuming pufferfish and the devastating consequences of mishandling these toxic marine creatures.

Brazil intelligence agency’s second-in-command fired in Bolsonaro illegal spying probe

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, on Tuesday (Jan 30) sacked the country’s deputy intelligence director amid an investigation into alleged illegal espionage during his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened?</h2>

Alessandro Moretti, second-in-command at the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) was fired by Lula, according to an announcement in an official gazette published on Tuesday. The bulletin named political scientist Marco Aurelio Cepik as his replacement, without giving further details.

Moretti is under investigation by the federal police which is looking into a clandestine government network which allegedly used Israeli spyware FirstMile to illegally spy on hundreds of politicians and public figures between 2019 and 2022, when Bolsonaro was president.&nbsp;

The investigators believe a group within the Abin spied on Bolsonaro’s perceived opponents, including supreme court justices and the former lower-house speaker.&nbsp;

Moretti’s dismissal also comes amid speculation Lula could fire top figures at the Abin over the scandal.

<h2>How is Bolsonaro’s son involved?</h2>

A report by Reuters, on Tuesday citing two sources and a spokesman for the former president’s family said that the police have also raided a property linked to Bolsonaro’s son Carlos.&nbsp;

According to an AFP report, the police raid took place on Monday (Jan 29), following an order by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes – who himself was an alleged target of Israeli spyware.&nbsp;

The police have identified Carlos, who is a member of the Rio de Janeiro city council, as part of the “political nucleus” suspected of ordering the illegal spying, said the supreme court judge.&nbsp;

Notably, Bolsonaro’s son was already under investigation for running a fake news factory but has denied any wrongdoing in that case. On Tuesday, the former president’s second son appeared for questioning by federal police but made no statement to the media.&nbsp;

In an interview with CBN radio, Lula called Bolsonaro’s claim “a bunch of nonsense.”&nbsp;

“The Brazilian government doesn’t give orders to the federal police, much less the courts,” said the incumbent president. When asked if he trusted Abin’s current leadership in the context of the current scandal, Lula said “you can never be sure”.&nbsp;

However, he expressed “great confidence” in Abin director Luiz Fernando Correa, whom he named to the post.

Investors sold brazil's currency after president lula da silva unveiled an industrial development plan for the next 10 years. The plan is aimed at boosting sluggish growth with state credits and subsidies. Lula wants to boost long-lagging growth with a similar playbook to the one he used during his earlier tenure.

A Brazilian man continued to party for four days in a row without an iota of realisation that he had a 9mm bullet firmly lodged in his head. 21-year-old Mateus Facio thought he was hit by a stone during a New Year’s Eve party at a beach in Rio de Janeiro. He stopped paying attention to the injury as the bleeding stopped after some time. He spent the next four days partying at the beach with his friends, completely unaware of the severity of the situation.

"Little did I know that all this would happen," the New York Post quoted the Brazilian man as saying.&nbsp;

On his way back home, the man realised he could not drive because his arms and fingers had stopped moving normally. After reaching home, he sought medical attention, only to find out that he had a bullet stuck in his head.

After facing 5 years of intense deforestation in Brazil's Amazon forest what comes as good news is that the rate of deforestation in the Amazon fell by nearly 50% in 2023. According to Brazil's Environment Ministry this was the lowest deforestation rate they had recorded in the past decades.

The Brazilian Navy inducted 'Humaita', the second Scorpene submarine that was built domestically, based on technology transfer from the French firm Naval Group. This is part of Brazil's ProSub programme that aims to enhance their Navy's submarine force with four new conventional (diesel-electric) Scorpene submarines and the development of an indigenous Nuclear-powered submarine.

In recent years, the French-origin Scorpene submarines have had many takers with the Indian Navy inducting six of them, and two each being added to the fleets of Malaysia and Chile.&nbsp;

Scorpene is a modern, high-performant, and stealthy submarine, that is designed for ocean-going and for shallow waters operations. It can undertake a wide range of missions such as Anti-Surface &amp; Anti-Submarine Warfare, special operations, and intelligence gathering. Stealthy and fast, these submarines have a level of automation that requires a limited number of crew, which reduces their operating costs significantly.

The Humaita successfully completed its sea trials and has now been delivered and entered into service within the Brazilian Navy. The submarine was&nbsp;commissioned by the Brazilian Navy at the Itaguaí Naval base, in the presence of José Mucio Monteiro, Brazilian minister of defence and Emmanuel Chiva, French General Delegate for Armaments.&nbsp;The first submarine of the ProSub program, the Riachuelo, was commissioned by the Brazilian Navy in September 2022. The remaining two submarines of the series, Tonelero and Angostura will respectively be launched in 2024 and 2025.

As part of the Brazilian ProSub programme, Scorpene submarines are manufactured and assembled in the shipyard built in Itaguaí by Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN). Naval Group, France, contributed to this programme by transferring technology, supplying the submarine design, the equipment that makes up the submarines and technical assistance. Teams from the ICN shipyard have also been trained in submarine construction techniques in France&nbsp;as part of a vast training programme for Brazilian welders, formers, pipe fitters and electricians. This is part of Brazil's ProSub programme that aims to enhance their Navy's submarine force with four new conventional (diesel-electric) Scorpene submarines and the development of an indigenous Nuclear-powered submarine. In recent years, the French-origin Scorpene submarines have had many takers with the Indian Navy inducting six of them, and two each being added to the fleets of Malaysia and Chile. Scorpene is a modern, high-performant, and stealthy submarine, that is designed for ocean-going and for shallow waters operations. It can undertake a wide range of missions such as Anti-Surface & Anti-Submarine Warfare, special operations, and intelligence gathering. Stealthy and fast, these submarines have a level of automation that requires a limited number of crew, which reduces their operating costs significantly. The submarine was commissioned by the Brazilian Navy at the Itaguaí Naval base, in the presence of José Mucio Monteiro, Brazilian minister of defence and Emmanuel Chiva, French General Delegate for Armaments. The first submarine of the ProSub program, the Riachuelo, was commissioned by the Brazilian Navy in September 2022. Teams from the ICN shipyard have also been trained in submarine construction techniques in France as part of a vast training programme for Brazilian welders, formers, pipe fitters and electricians. Chinese electric car giant BYD has engaged in talks with Brazilian lithium producer Sigma Lithium to obtain materials for Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing, the Financial Times reported.

The report cited Alexandre Baldy, BYD’s chair in Brazil, who revealed discussions about potential collaboration, be it through a supply agreement, joint venture, or acquisition.

Baldy emphasised the active nature of the dialogue with Sigma, a company valued at $2.9 billion, as BYD aims to solidify its position as the world's largest EV manufacturer.

BYD, backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, recently surpassed Tesla in EV production and is investing $620 million in building its first electric car factory outside Asia in Brazil.

BYD's pursuit of an integrated supply chain in Brazil was highlighted by Alexandre Baldy in a statement to the Financial Times where he conveyed that various possibilities were under consideration, encompassing discussions about supply, potential joint ventures, and even the prospect of an acquisition.

However, he emphasised that, at the moment, none of these options had materialised into concrete plans.

The company is strategically positioning itself to secure a consistent and reliable lithium supply, a crucial element for EV batteries.

Baldy disclosed that BYD representatives met with Sigma’s CEO, Ana Cabral Gardner, in São Paulo last month, highlighting an evolving relationship that, for now, remains shrouded in confidentiality.

This potential move aligns with BYD's broader international expansion plans, including establishing an EV factory in Hungary and exploring opportunities in Mexico.

However, BYD's ambitions have not escaped scrutiny, as global concerns rise over China's quest for technological dominance and control over critical resources for clean tech industries.

With the Biden administration looking to reduce Chinese manufacturing in the US and Europe investigating China's EV industry for alleged unfair competition, BYD's strategic moves are under close observation on the international stage.

Sigma Lithium, despite posting a net loss of C$25.5 million in the first nine months of 2023, is a key player in Brazil's lithium market. Amid a sharp decline in lithium prices causing a drop in shares, Sigma's board is conducting a strategic review, contemplating a potential sale of the business or listing its Brazilian unit on Nasdaq and the Singapore Stock Exchange.

Notably, Volkswagen and Chinese battery maker CATL have been mentioned as potential bidders, but both companies have refrained from confirming or denying their involvement.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, on Monday (Jan 8) vowed that there will be no pardon for his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters who rioted in the capital last year in protest against an election result.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Brazilians in Sao Paulo took to the streets to mark the first anniversary of the day where parts of the capital were stormed by protesters calling for a military coup after Lula’s win.

<h2>‘Democracy Unshaken’</h2>

Brazilian authorities celebrated their country’s democratic system under a screen that read “Democracy Unshaken.” The gathering&nbsp;was attended by Congressional leaders, Supreme Court justices and government officials led by the Brazilian president in the capital Brasilia.&nbsp;

“All those who financed, planned and executed the coup attempt must be exemplarily punished. There can be no pardon for those who attack democracy,” said Lula at the event held in Congress.&nbsp;

Last year, on January 8, tens of thousands of supporters of hard-right former president Bolsonaro stormed the Brazilian capital city’s buildings that symbolise the country’s democracy, a week after Lula had taken office.&nbsp;

Lula’s predecessor, who never conceded defeat, had left the country for the United States before the presidential handover to his successor. Bolsonaro is currently under investigation by the Supreme Court for allegedly instigating the unrest.

The riots in Brasilia were eerily similar to the riots which took place at the US Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021, where supporters of Donald Trump stormed the building in a bid to stop the American lawmakers from certifying&nbsp;Joe Biden’s win. &nbsp;

Bolsonaro, who is said to have considered Trump a political role model, has since denied involvement and called the events that unfolded on January 8 a “setup” orchestrated by the left, during a recent interview with CNN Brasil.&nbsp;

So far, more than 2,000 people have been arrested in connection with the riots – although most were later released – and 30 have been convicted on charges including armed criminal conspiracy, a violent uprising against the rule of law and an attempted coup.&nbsp;

The police said that they conducted new raids on Monday (Jan 8) to track down those who planned and financed the attacks.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the former president has been banned by the country’s electoral authority from running for elected office for eight years over his abuse of power and misuse of the media ahead of the 2022 election. This comes after Bolsonaro reportedly summoned ambassadors to talk about unfounded claims about Brazil’s electronic voting system.

Ahead of the first anniversary, a poll conducted by Genial/Quaest which was released on Sunday (Jan 7) showed that a large majority of Brazilians disapprove of the riots, with a staggering 89 per cent against the riot and only six per cent voting in favour of them.&nbsp;

Festive season is here and along with proper-proper family time, boozy parties are also happening everywhere. Hangover is a real pain, but next to nobody thinks of tomorrow during the fun and frolic on the previous night. If you are in Brazil, you may be in luck as if a facial recognition tech deems you drunk enough. Because then, you'll get discount on burgers.

Media reports say that Brazil wing of fast-food chain Burger King has come up with this marketing trick. All a (probably drunk) person has to do is stand in front of the camera and let the face recognition tech take a good look at you. If the technology declares you to be drunk, you'll get some discount on the burgers.

A video of this offer was spotted and reported by Marketing Drive.

So far so good. The offer has enough amusement factor to make people try it (and subsequently boost sales of the fast food chain). But the larger point, still looming, is whether facial recognition tech accurate and adaptive enough to tick all boxes of what's proper.

It has been widely reported in media that while facial recognition technology may work fine in case of people with caucasian features, it bungles up things in case of people of colour. As AI begins to truly become a topic of discussion, and of predictions of dystopian future, the face recognition is still found to be inadequate to detect emotions accurately with 100 per cent certainty. Despite the claims by dozens of tech companies, facial recognition tech is yet to develop fully.

But if you are keen for some discount on burgers, you can go to Brazil and get sloshed before January 2 because that's the last date of the marketing campaign currently being run by the fast-food giant.

A rock-salt mine of petrochemicals giant Braskem located in the northeastern coastal city of Maceio (the capital of Alagoas state) partially ruptured on Sunday (Dec 10), after officials warned that the mine was at risk of imminent collapse.

A rock-salt mine of petrochemicals giant Braskem located in the northeastern coastal city of Maceio (the capital of Alagoas state) partially ruptured on Sunday (Dec 10), after officials warned that the mine was at risk of imminent collapse. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, authorities said that people had previously been evacuated. Maceio Mayor João Henrique Caldas said the mine was expected to stabilise following the partial collapse. Caldas also said that authorities would continue fighting and demanding responsibility from Braskem, which is the big one responsible for damages. As per the report, the partial rupture of the mine came as no surprise to the Maceio's residents, where Braskem's 40 years of rock salt mining caused the displacement of tens of thousands of people. Apart from mine 18 which partially ruptured, Braskem has said it is in the process of filling eight other cavities with sand. On Nov 28, the company alerted officials of the imminent risk the mine could collapse. Two days later, Alagoas Governor Paulo Dantas warned of the possible “formation of large craters” following the mine’s collapse and said federal teams would arrive that night as backup. Residents were ordered not to travel near the area. The updates that scared residents In the first few days after Braskem issued a warning, the company sent out regular updates, including possible times at which the mine could collapse. These updates scared residents. Speaking to the Associated Press on Dec 1, resident Carlos Eduardo, a student at the Alagaos Federal University, said, "It caused the population to be in terror, unable to sleep, worried." Rock salt mining is a process of extracting salt from deep underground deposits. Once the extraction has been done, the cavities left behind can collapse, causing the soil above to settle. Structures built on top of such areas can topple. The report said that from 1979 to 2019 when Braskem announced the shutdown of its rock salt operations in Maceio, the company operated a total of 35 mines. Troubles in the coastal city started a year earlier when large cracks first appeared on the surface. The first order to evacuate some areas was issued in 2019. Since then, five neighbourhoods in the city turned into ghost towns as residents accepted Braskem’s payouts to relocate. Meanwhile, the Brazilian Senate said that around 200,000 people in Maceio were affected by the company’s mining activities. (With inputs from agencies)

The Porto Alegre City Council in Brazil unanimously passed a bill related to water meters, a legislative feat that gained attention due to its unconventional origin. The bill, effective from November 23, was entirely drafted&nbsp;by the AI language model ChatGPT, a creation of OpenAI, as reported by the Washington Post.

Councilman Ramiro Rosario, the sponsor of the bill, said&nbsp;that ChatGPT swiftly executed a 250-character command in just 15 seconds—a task that would typically require three days if done manually.

&nbsp;"I go back to that phrase that has already become a sort of cliche in this subject: No one will be replaced by artificial intelligence, but we could all be replaced by those who know how to use artificial intelligence. So we have to prepare ourselves for this path," he told the Washington Post.&nbsp;

The command entered into ChatGPT was eared towards creating&nbsp;a municipal law prohibiting the Municipal Water and Sewage Department from charging property owners for new water meters in case of theft.

Rosario said&nbsp;that the AI not only expedited the process but also provided creative solutions. These suggestions included a 30-day deadline for replacing stolen water meters and a clause to waive water bills if the deadline wasn't met.

"If I had followed the usual process, it would've taken days to sit down with my team and legal sources. But in a fraction of that time, AI looked into the best references regarding good practice in drafting bills inside and outside the country on its database. This was an unprecedented process of an AI-drafted bill that brought in suggestions that were in line with the principles and values of my mandate - I knew I had to sign it," he said.

Speaking to his OPEC+ peers, Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira expressed the country's eagerness to formally enter the group at a future meeting to be held in Vienna, after its charter's technical review for cooperation.

"It's all set. But there is a phase of detailed analysis by our technical team of the document we just received, which is part of the protocol in Brazil," said Silveira, in Portuguese amid a virtual meeting, where his comments received a standing ovation from OPEC+ ministers.

The confirmation from Brazil came after the oil cartel announced that Brazil, which is a major producer, will soon become a part of the OPEC+.

Brazil is among the top 10 producers in the world and has been Latin America's largest oil producer since 2016.

As per pricing agency Argus Media, the crude production reached a record 3.7 million barrels per day in September, which is a nearly 17 per cent increase from a similar month last year and a 6.1 per cent increase from August.

The ministers of the 13-member Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) led by Saudi Arabia and its 10 partners were holding a meeting to discuss future output cuts for boosting prices.

"The meeting welcomed Alexandre Silveira de Oliveira, Minister of Mines and Energy of the Federative Republic of Brazil, which will join the OPEC+... starting January 2024," said OPEC, in a press release.

"Considering that Brazil is a large oil producer and is driving oil production growth it is important to have them on board, but it seems that they are not cutting production like Mexico, so would conclude with: good for OPEC+, less relevant for oil market balances," said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo.&nbsp;

Neymar&nbsp;underwent surgery Thursday at a hospital in his native Brazil to repair a&nbsp;torn&nbsp;anterior cruciate&nbsp;ligament&nbsp;and meniscus damage suffered during a national team match last month. "The&nbsp;operation&nbsp;was a success. We're very satisfied with the result," said Rodrigo Lasmar, the Brazilian team doctor who performed the surgery.

"He had a reconstruction of the anterior cruciate&nbsp;ligament&nbsp;and the two meniscus injuries have been repaired." Neymar&nbsp;is expected to remain at Mater Dei hospital in the southeastern city of Belo Horizonte for another 24 to 48 hours while he recovers, the doctor added.

Lasmar previously operated on&nbsp;Neymar&nbsp;for a foot fracture in 2018. The 31-year-old was stretchered off in tears during Brazil's 2-0 loss to Uruguay in a World Cup qualifying match on October 17, after colliding with opposing midfielder Nicolas&nbsp;de la Cruz.

Exams found the star striker had&nbsp;torn&nbsp;his left anterior cruciate&nbsp;ligament, one of the most serious&nbsp;knee&nbsp;injuries in football. The injury is expected to sideline him for several months, including for Brazil's upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers this month against Colombia and arch rivals Argentina.

Taylor Swift’s team supporting the family of fan who died at her Brazil concert: Report

Over the years, people have given different spins to their gender reveal parties but none might come close as&nbsp;Meirivone Rocha Moraes' recent party. The Brazilian woman who made headlines for marrying a rag doll in 2021 has now thrown a gender reveal party for her second rag-doll child, weeks after attending an ultrasound.&nbsp;

Surrounded by around 40 guests, Moraes, her 'husband' Marcelo and her 'first child' Marcelinho attended the party with pink and blue decorations around.

In the now-viral video posted on social media, Moraes can be seen holding a sparkler spouting pink smoke, suggesting the 'rag-doll baby' was going to be a female.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While Moraes started jumping in joy, her family members and friends started clapping and celebrating.&nbsp;

Marcelinho, perhaps jealous of an incoming sibling, could be seen sitting on the lap of a guest.&nbsp;

“I wanted it to be a boy because I’ve heard having a girl is very expensive and much more work. But the baby will still be welcomed and very loved by me and her dad," said&nbsp;Moraes.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Moraes provided a pregnancy update after attending an ultrasound, revealing the baby’s expected arrival in December, according to DailyMail.

<h2>Moraes' life: A soap opera&nbsp;</h2>

Moraes was introduced to 'Marcelo'&nbsp;by her mother, who had created it after getting to know that the woman did not have a dance partner. Soon, they both fell in love and got married.&nbsp;

Moraes said Marcelo was the man she always wanted as the doll doesn’t argue or fight and always understands her.

“Marcelo is a great and faithful husband. He is such a man that all women envy him,” she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Notably, the first child Marcelinho was 'born' in the same year. At the time, Moraes revealed that it was a home birth and that a doctor and nurse had been involved to facilitate the 'birthing process'.&nbsp;

While happiness has arrived in Moraes' family, it hasn't come without its share of problems.

Earlier this year, Moraes had accused&nbsp;Marcelo of cheating, leading to 'devastating' consequences. The matriarch of the family relegated Marcelo to the couch and he was barred from entering the couples bedroom.&nbsp;

Brazil's National Development Bank (BNDES) has given the green signal to allocate 318 million reais ($65 million) from the $1.3 billion Amazon Fund to establish a law enforcement initiative targeting deforestation and environmental crimes in the rainforest, according to a senior official cited by Reuters.&nbsp;

This marks a significant step for the Amazon Fund, supported by four nations and managed by BNDES. The project, endorsed by the justice ministry and overseen by Brazil's Federal Police, aims to tackle illegal activities threatening the rainforest, such as logging and mining, which persist despite the government's efforts to reduce deforestation. The Amazon, crucial for absorbing carbon and combating global warming, faces ongoing challenges from unauthorised activities.&nbsp;

Humberto Freire, the Federal Police's director for the Amazon and environmental crime, emphasised the need for collaborative action. "Without us all having the same purpose, integrated, sharing information and intelligence and acting together to strengthen the fight against environmental crimes, we will not move forward," Reuters quoted him as saying.&nbsp;

Freire, who will attend the UN Climate Change Conference COP28 in Dubai, highlighted the importance of transitioning from rhetoric to concrete actions in the Amazon, necessitating adequate funding. &nbsp;

The initial allocation from the Amazon Fund will fund the purchase of helicopters and essential equipment. Simultaneously, an International Police Cooperation Centre is set to be established in Manaus by early next year, facilitating collaboration with neighbouring countries' authorities, Freire revealed.&nbsp;

The law enforcement project, budgeted at 2 billion reais over the next few years, will receive its first disbursement from the Amazon Fund in the coming days. Established in 2008 to promote rainforest preservation, the Amazon Fund initially received contributions from Norway ($1.2 billion), Germany ($89 million), Petrobras ($7.7 million), Switzerland ($5.6 million), and the United States ($3 million). &nbsp;

Despite a notable reduction in deforestation this year, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva aims to address environmental challenges that persist, committing to a zero-deforestation target by 2030.&nbsp;

Tempers had flared in the stands at the Maracana moments before kick-off, with Brazilian police seen using batons to drive back a block of Argentine fans at one end of the ground. Several Argentina players went towards the disturbances in an apparent attempt to plead for calm, with goalkeeper Emi Martinez attempting to jump into the seating area at one stage to confront a baton-wielding Brazilian police officer. Argentina's players led by Lionel Messi then returned to their dressing room as the clashes continued, with Messi appearing to say: "We're not playing, we're leaving." The 2022 World Cup winners re-emerged onto the field shortly before 10pm local time and the match kicked off shortly afterwards, roughly 30 minutes later than the scheduled start time.

Brazil, which is currently experiencing a heatwave a month before start of the summer season, has recorded its highest ever temperature of 44.8 degrees Celsius (112.6F). The highest-ever temperature was recorded on Sunday (Nov 19) in Aracuai, a town in Brazil's Southeastern state of Minas Gerais. The unprecedented spike in temperature is being attributed to climate change and El Nino weather phenomenon.

Media reports have said that energy consumption in the country has soared in the wake of the heatwave. Red alerts have been issued across the country after temperatures started rising. But forecasters are now saying that there may be a let-up that'll provide comfort to the population.

The heatwave in the country was making news already, but it drew greater global gaze after singer Taylor Swift had to cancel one of her concerts in Rio de Janeiro because a fan died before a show. The show was slated to take place on Saturday last week.

Organisers of the show have been quoted in media report as saying that Ana Clara Benevides Machado (23) was at the stadium when she sought help. She was taken to hospital but died an hour later.

After the tragedy, Brazil's federal government ordered the organiser T4F to ensure water access at all of Swift's concerts in Brazil and issue a directive allowing water bottles to be brought into all concerts from now on.

The El Nino weather phenomenon is amplifying the effect. Currently, Earth is going through this phase. When El Nino is active, global temperatures generally tend to rise.

As for the 'Swifties', as what Taylor Swift fans are called worldwide, they are eager to attend the concert which was postponed to Monday in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, is once again under scrutiny, this time for allegedly "harassing" a humpback whale while riding a jetski during a public holiday.

This investigation adds to a series of probes into Bolsonaro's actions, ranging from environmental offences to political misconduct, reported the Guardian.

Known as "Captain Chainsaw" for his anti-environmental policies during his four-year administration, Bolsonaro now faces allegations of environmental misconduct during a jetski excursion near São Sebastião on Brazil's south-eastern coastline.

In June, a man resembling Bolsonaro was reportedly filmed within 15 metres of a humpback whale, using a mobile phone to capture the distressed behaviour&nbsp;of the whale.

Brazilian law prohibits the deliberate harassment of cetaceans, including humpback whales, and mandates a minimum distance of 100 metres for vessels with engines running.

Environmental agency Ibama enforces regulations that prohibit vessels from approaching marine animals too closely and engaging in activities that may disturb them. Such regulations include maintaining a distance of 300 metres from dolphins or whales and avoiding excessive noise in their vicinity.

Bolsonaro's environmental track record includes a fine for illegal fishing within a marine reserve over a decade ago.

Critics argue that, during his presidency, he dismantled environmental protections, resulting in severe consequences for nature.

Another right-wing politician was recently fined for a similar offence in the same region.
