Outlawed militias torched 35 buses and a train drivers' cabin in Rio De Janeiro on the 23rd of October. These arson attacks, which paralyzed parts of the scenic Brazilian city, was in retaliation to the killing of a gang leader in a police operation earlier. A level-three alert on a five-level scale was declared by the city hall, warning residents of high-impact incidents. 12 people were subsequently arrested but six of them were released due to lack of evidence. Who are these paramilitary militia groups and how potent is the challenge posed by them? Mohammed Saleh brings you the details.

<p>Brazilian retailers are grappling with a challenging landscape as they contend with mounting debt and increasing competition from online giants like Amazon. A complex combination of factors, including high debt levels for both retailers and consumers, rising yields, and a recent accounting scandal at Americanas SA, has created a challenging environment for the retail sector in Brazil, Bloomberg reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The retail industry in Brazil is already exhibiting cracks, with established retailers facing significant hurdles.</p>

<p>Casas Bahia, a well-known retail chain, had to issue equity at a substantial discount to manage its debt load. Similarly, Tok&amp;Stok, a furniture retailer, announced a debt restructuring of around 350 million reais and received a capital addition of 100 million reais after failing to meet some obligations. Other retailers, such as Magazine Luiza and C&amp;A Modas, have seen risk premiums on their local bonds increase.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bloomberg quoted Thiago Macruz, retail analyst and head of Brazil equity research at Itau BBA SA, as saying, "We're talking about maybe the worst moment for Brazil retail since I started covering the sector a decade ago. It has been super-challenging for retailers, especially those that cater to lower-income customers."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Brazil's central bank has attempted to alleviate some of the pressure on borrowers by reducing interest rates, and further cuts are anticipated. However, it might not provide immediate relief to retailers who are burdened by debt.</p>

<p>Brazilian retailers had ramped up their debt levels prior to the pandemic, driven by falling interest rates and strong local demand for bonds. Retailers also extended credit to customers, expanding their in-house lending, often taking on the risks associated with defaults. In the near term, this facilitated revenue growth, but it is&nbsp;now raising concerns as customers face mounting debt levels.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amidst these challenges, retailers are now scaling back on lending to consumers. Brazilian retailers are grappling with a challenging landscape as they contend with mounting debt and increasing competition from online giants like Amazon. A complex combination of factors, including high debt levels for both retailers and consumers, rising yields, and a recent accounting scandal at Americanas SA, has created a challenging environment for the retail sector in Brazil, Bloomberg reported.

The retail industry in Brazil is already exhibiting cracks, with established retailers facing significant hurdles. Casas Bahia, a well-known retail chain, had to issue equity at a substantial discount to manage its debt load. Similarly, Tok&Stok, a furniture retailer, announced a debt restructuring of around 350 million reais and received a capital addition of 100 million reais after failing to meet some obligations. Other retailers, such as Magazine Luiza and C&A Modas, have seen risk premiums on their local bonds increase. Bloomberg quoted Thiago Macruz, retail analyst and head of Brazil equity research at Itau BBA SA, as saying, "We're talking about maybe the worst moment for Brazil retail since I started covering the sector a decade ago. It has been super-challenging for retailers, especially those that cater to lower-income customers." Brazil's central bank has attempted to alleviate some of the pressure on borrowers by reducing interest rates, and further cuts are anticipated. However, it might not provide immediate relief to retailers who are burdened by debt. Brazilian retailers had ramped up their debt levels prior to the pandemic, driven by falling interest rates and strong local demand for bonds. Retailers also extended credit to customers, expanding their in-house lending, often taking on the risks associated with defaults. In the near term, this facilitated revenue growth, but it is now raising concerns as customers face mounting debt levels. Amidst these challenges, retailers are now scaling back on lending to consumers. Bloomberg quoted Alexandre Muller, a credit fund manager at JGP Asset Management, as saying, "Companies realised it's not a good business to deliver revenue growth at the expense of seeing a spike in bad loans. Otherwise, they're putting money in one pocket by stealing from the other." Brazilian retail sector faces challenges amidst rising debt and online competition

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms - Molecular biologist Rodrigo Moura Neto of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro said that cannabidiol was discovered by a group of scientists in the flowers and fruits of a plant known as Trema micrantha blume, a shrub that grows throughout most of the South American nation and is frequently classified as weed.

Brazil: Scientists discover cannabis in a local plant

<p>Scientists have found cannabidiol,&nbsp;a compound in cannabis known as CBD, in a very common plant in Brazil, which further opens&nbsp;new avenues for producing the popular substance through other sources.</p>

<p>Cannabidiol was found by a team of scientists in the flowers and fruits of a plant called Trema micrantha blume, which is a shrub that grows across much of the South American country and is often identified as weed, said Federal University of Rio de Janeiro's molecular biologist Rodrigo Moura Neto, while speaking to AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>CBD, which is used increasingly by some for treating conditions related to chronic pain, epilepsy and anxiety, is one of the main active compounds found in cannabis, along with THC or tetrahydrocannabinol - which is the substance that gives a high to the users.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The effectiveness of the compound as a medical treatment is still being researched. Neto stated that in the chemical analysis, they found CBD in "Trema" but could not find THC, which increased the possibility of finding multiple new sources of the former - which is not likely to face the legal and regulatory hurdles of cannabis and continues to remain outlawed in various places, which includes Brazil.</p>

<h2><strong>CBD - a legal alternative to cannabis?</strong></h2>

<p>"It's a legal alternative to using cannabis," he stated. "This is a plant that grows all over Brazil. It would be a simpler and cheaper source of cannabidiol," he added. Previously, CBD was found by scientists in a related plant in Thailand, he stated.</p>

<p>Neto, who has not published his discoveries anywhere as of yet, said that he has now been planning to scale up his study to find out the best methods for extracting CBD from "Trema" and observe how effective it is in patients, who are suffering from conditions which are currently treated using medical cannabis.</p>

<p>Recently, his team clinched a 500,000-real (US$104,000) grant which was provided by the Brazilian government for funding the research. As per Neto, the research will take at least five years to complete.</p>

<p>Last year, a study carried out by market analysis firm Vantage Market Research estimated that the CBD's global market is at nearly US$5 billion, and stated that it is likely to increase to more than US$47 billion by 2028, especially because of its growing health and wellness use.</p>

In Brazil, retail shops are fighting to stay open long enough to profit from interest rate cuts. Retail businesses & clients are carrying heavy debt loads, while online stores like Amazon are posing an existential threat. There are already signs of trouble in the market. One of Brazil's most successful retail companies, Casas Bahia, was forced to sell shares at a deep discount last month to reduce debt. After falling short on payments to various creditors, furniture retailer tok&stok has restructured debt of roughly 73.4 million dollars. To survive in this volatile market, retailers are cutting back on consumer loans.

<p>Former Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazario has had his say in the Ballon d'Or battle between Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland. The Brazilian believes that Messi is the deserving winner of the award, especially after what he did in the World Cup last year.&nbsp;</p>

The Amazon River, a lifeline of the Brazilian rain forest, has plummeted to its lowest level in more than a century, as a severe drought disrupts the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and wreaks havoc on the jungle's fragile ecosystem. Rapidly dwindling tributaries have left boats stranded, cutting off essential supplies to remote villages and decimating the river's biodiversity, including the population of endangered river dolphins. The port city of Manaus, at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Amazon River, has recorded historically low water levels, posing a dire situation for the region's most populous city. After the physios and the medical staff came out to attend to him, it was decided to take him off the game. A stretcher was called in and Neymar was ushered out of the turf. Citing an official statement, the news agency Reuters reported that the navy captured a small boat used for transporting people and cargo along the coast with five crew members heading to Africa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ship was towed by the patrol vessel to the port of Recife. Joao Batista, a captain in the navy said on Tuesday, "Yesterday in the morning, the Brazilian Navy was put into action and a Federal Police team boarded in Natal. Today in the morning, the boat set off to the Recife coast to carry out the operation on a vessel that had illicit drugs on board."</p>

<p>This seizure follows a series of operations held by the Navy to fight drug transportation on the country's coast. Since 2020, over 17 tonnes of cocaine, 4.3 tonnes of hashish, 695 tonnes of cigarettes, 113.34 tonnes of fish, 14 tonnes of marijuana and 3,146 cubic meters of wood have been seized, the navy said.&nbsp;</p>

The Brazilian Navy said on Tuesday (September 19) that it seized d 3.6 metric tonnes of cocaine on a boat off the coast of northeastern Pernambuco state. This is the largest single off-shore capture of the drug by Brazil.

The Brazilian Navy said on Tuesday (September 19) that it seized d 3.6 metric tonnes of cocaine on a boat off the coast of northeastern Pernambuco state. This is the largest single off-shore capture of the drug by Brazil. Citing an official statement, the news agency Reuters reported that the navy captured a small boat used for transporting people and cargo along the coast with five crew members heading to Africa. The ship was towed by the patrol vessel to the port of Recife. Joao Batista, a captain in the navy said on Tuesday, "Yesterday in the morning, the Brazilian Navy was put into action and a Federal Police team boarded in Natal. Today in the morning, the boat set off to the Recife coast to carry out the operation on a vessel that had illicit drugs on board." This seizure follows a series of operations held by the Navy to fight drug transportation on the country's coast. Since 2020, over 17 tonnes of cocaine, 4.3 tonnes of hashish, 695 tonnes of cigarettes, 113.34 tonnes of fish, 14 tonnes of marijuana and 3,146 cubic meters of wood have been seized, the navy said. In May this year, Brazilian law enforcement agencies seized 251 kilogrammes of cocaine from a ship in the port of Santos. According to local media, the drug was discovered hidden in an underwater compartment of a ship. This combined operation involved teams from the Revenue Service, Federal Police, Brazilian Navy, Military Police, and the Environmental Police. Using a speedboat, the agents approached the ship and discovered 251 kg of cocaine concealed in black bags inside a compartment. The confiscated drugs were taken aboard the speed boat. Brazil seizes 3.6 tonnes of cocaine in single-largest offshore capture

<p>Brazil has offered to share its ethanol manufacturing technology with India, in an attempt to put an end to their long-running disagreements over the sugar industry, the Financial Express reported on Monday.</p>

<p>A ministerial conference and several rounds of formal negotiations between the two parties led to the development.</p>

<p>The offer on ethanol technology might be the deciding factor because India wants to proceed quickly with the use of biofuels for stand-alone usage in transportation as well as for blending with petroleum fuels.</p>

<p>“Brazil is saying they will share with us technology for ethanol production. It is a positive thing. We should be able to get a good outcome (in talks),” the Financial Express quoted an anonymous official as saying. But the representative withheld information on the Indian proposal during the negotiations.</p>

<p>Brazil is a major manufacturer of ethanol and sugarcane. It has attained a 25 per cent level and is a leader in gasoline with ethanol added. In Brazil, a sizable market for flex-fuel vehicles that can run on either gasoline or ethanol has now been cornered, making up 83 per cent of sales of new light vehicles in 2022.</p>

<p>By FY 26, India wants to increase the current 10 per cent ethanol blend to 20 per cent. Diesel and ethanol blends are also being tested. Additionally, it is the Global Alliance's proposer and coordinator, which was established on its idea during the G-20 Summit on September 9. &nbsp;Along with the presidents of the US, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, and Bangladesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched it.</p>

<p>All major manufacturers currently provide vehicles with flex fuel engines, and late last month Roads and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled the first electric flex-fuel vehicle produced in India by Toyota.</p>

<p>The Indian government is pushing ethanol in order to increase farm revenue in addition to lowering the cost of importing crude oil for transportation and aiding in the decarbonisation of transportation. Some sources claim that sugarcane farmers' incomes could increase by 15 per cent as a result of ethanol. Sugar price increases are not under much pressure since farmers are earning more money from ethanol. Additionally, it increases the cash flow and profitability of sugarcane processors.</p>

<p>Given that it involves two of the biggest sugar producers in the world, the India-Brazil sugar dispute is critical. The resolution of the conflict could have a significant effect on the world sugar market.</p>

<p>The India-Brazil sugar dispute began in 2005 when India complained to the World Trade Organization (WTO) about Brazil's sugar subsidies, claiming that they were affecting Indian sugar farmers and causing the global sugar market to become distorted. Brazil had to cut back on its sugar subsidies after the WTO decided in favour of India.</p>

<p>Despite this, the conflict has persisted, with India and Brazil trading charges of breaking WTO regulations. Brazil contested India's support programmes for sugarcane farmers and sugar export subsidies in 2019. Brazil said that these actions were against the WTO's Agriculture Agreement (AoA).</p>

<p>In response to a complaint from Brazil, the WTO's Dispute Settlement Panel stated in a report distributed to members in December 2021 that India's support for sugarcane producers between 2014–15 and 2018–19 exceeded the permissible amount of 10 per cent of the total value of production, in violation of AoA provisions. Costa Rica and Guatemala later asked to join the dispute. Other nations participated in the dispute as third parties.</p>

<p>The panel's decision has been contested by India, but as the WTO's Appellate Body is now inactive, efforts have been made to resolve the dispute bilaterally.</p>

<p>Brazilian Army Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, who was the aide of former president Jair Bolsonaro, has told police that after selling two luxury watches the ex-president had received as official gifts, he gave him tens of thousands of dollars, The Guardian reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last month, police raided the homes of Bolsonaro allies who were accused of reselling gifts including jewellery from foreign dignitaries for the "illicit enrichment of" the former president.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The investigators earlier said that Cid, one of the accused, mentioned in an audio message that "25,000 dollars in cash" would be intended for the ex-president after the sale of certain goods.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cid was in prison for four months after being sent to jail in May over falsification of coronavirus vaccination certificates. Reports alleged that he forged Bolsonaro's vaccination cards in order to travel together to the United States after his electoral defeat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of the nation authorised a cooperation deal between Cid and the country's Federal Police and last week, Cid was released on parole from the military prison in Brasília. He was moved to a housing development for the military.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report mentioned that the deal apparently needs Cid to give details regarding all the suspected crimes committed when Bolsonaro was in office, which included an alleged coup plot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media says that just before he was released, Cid gave a statement to federal investigators, admitting selling a diamond-set Rolex and a Patek Philippe wristwatch on behalf of the ex-president. The watches were gifts from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to an explosive front-page report in Veja, Brazil’s most-read weekly news magazine, on Friday (September 15), "Was the sale immoral? Perhaps. But we didn't think it was illegal," claimed Cid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bolsonaro is accused of forging an election denial movement that culminated with the Jan. 8 storming of government buildings in Brasilia by thousands of his supporters. He has already been ruled politically ineligible until 2030 by Brazil's federal electoral court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Saturday's decision, seen by Reuters, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that Cid fulfilled the criteria for a cooperation agreement, and released him from jail. He will need to use an ankle tag, cannot leave the country, and will need to present himself to authorities once a week, among other restrictive measures.</p>

<p>Any failure to comply with those measures would land him back in jail, the decision states.</p>

Last month, police raided the homes of Bolsonaro allies who were accused of reselling gifts including jewellery from foreign dignitaries for the "illicit enrichment of" the former president. The investigators earlier said that Cid, one of the accused, mentioned in an audio message that "25,000 dollars in cash" would be intended for the ex-president after the sale of certain goods. Reports alleged that he forged Bolsonaro's vaccination cards in order to travel together to the United States after his electoral defeat. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of the nation authorised a cooperation deal between Cid and the country's Federal Police and last week, Cid was released on parole from the military prison in Brasília. He was moved to a housing development for the military. The report mentioned that the deal apparently needs Cid to give details regarding all the suspected crimes committed when Bolsonaro was in office, which included an alleged coup plot. The watches were gifts from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. According to an explosive front-page report in Veja, Brazil’s most-read weekly news magazine, on Friday (September 15), "Was the sale immoral? Perhaps. But we didn't think it was illegal," claimed Cid. Bolsonaro is accused of forging an election denial movement that culminated with the Jan. 8 storming of government buildings in Brasilia by thousands of his supporters. He has already been ruled politically ineligible until 2030 by Brazil's federal electoral court. Any failure to comply with those measures would land him back in jail, the decision states.
