Brazil might be in the middle of the Southern Hemisphere's winter, but it is experiencing a heat wave. Sao Paulo, the largest city in Latin America, is close to breaking temperature records for August and 2023. The 11.5 million citizens of Sao Paulo are shocked by the temperatures, as they reached almost 10 degrees above the monthly average of 24.5 degrees Celsius, the National Institute of Meteorology reported (Inmet). On Wednesday (Aug 23), the temperature hit a high of 32.3 degrees Celsius. The city reached nearly the same temperature on January 16, during the summer season. The last time this happened was in 1955 when the city recorded 33.1 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature for the month of August. They warned that the rising temperatures in Brazil might break the historical records for August and 2023 on Thursday. "In the future, the winters will probably get hotter," Fabio Luiz Teixeira, a professor at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Sao Paulo, told AFP. According to experts, the abnormal weather in August 2023 is because of a large mass of hot and dry air hovering over Brazil. The mix of the El Nino weather phenomenon and global warming caused by human activities creates this mass that elevates the temperature. "Today, we have temperatures five degrees above average in some areas or cities in Brazil," stated Cleber Souza, an Inmet meteorologist. Souza also warned of high temperatures in Mato Grosso, Brazil's centre-west, of around 41 degrees Celsius, and temperatures in the country's north and northeast approaching 40 degrees Celsius. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant diplomatic journey this week, as he travels to South Africa to participate in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-key-facts-about-the-brics-2023-summit-626490">15th BRICS summit</a> in Johannesburg. Set to take place from August 22 to 24, the summit marks a key diplomatic engagement of this year, given it is the first in-person BRICS Summit since 2019.&nbsp;

The BRICS grouping consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa and represents a staggering 42 per cent of the world’s population along with a significant 27 per cent of the global GDP.

An impressive 67 African and Global South leaders have been invited by South Africa which is the host of this year’s summit, with 30 leaders having already confirmed their attendance. This year’s summit is anticipated to draw global attention due to its diverse participation and the potential outcomes it may yield.

The primary focus of this summit revolves around expansion, with an expected announcement on guidelines for enlargement and the identification of recommended countries to join the BRICS bloc.&nbsp;

A report from the BRICS sherpas, who lead discussions within the group, was submitted to foreign ministers last month. This report will be presented to the leaders during the summit, influencing the final decision on expansion.&nbsp;

Notably, Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi engaged in discussions with PM Modi last week, expressing interest in both connectivity projects like Chabahar and his country’s inclusion in BRICS.

South Africa has received formal expressions of interest from over 20 countries seeking BRICS membership which are Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Nigeria, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela and Viet Nam.&nbsp;

The evolving geopolitical landscape has renewed interest in BRICS as nations in the Global South explore alternatives in a multipolar world. Given the substantial African representation, this summit provides India with an opportunity to enhance ties and explore future collaboration areas with African countries.

Interestingly, India, holding the G20 chair, has proposed the inclusion of 55 African member countries bloc, the African Union, within the G20. This proposition has garnered support from countries such as the US, UK, France, and Russia. An official announcement is expected during the upcoming G20 summit in Delhi on September 9-10. &nbsp;

Focus is also on any bilateral engagements of PM Modi, including a potential structured bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During a press conference held in Pretoria on Friday (August 18), the Chinese Ambassador expressed hope for direct talks between the two leaders on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.&nbsp;

The last formal bilateral meeting between PM Modi and President Xi occurred during the 11th BRICS summit in Brazil back in November 2019. However, they shared a brief exchange during the gala dinner at the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia in 2022, where the Indian side emphasized the importance of “stabilizing bilateral relations” according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

The relationship between India and China has experienced strains, particularly following the 2020 Galwan incident, which saw aggressive actions by Chinese forces resulting in the unfortunate loss of 20 Indian soldiers’ lives. Subsequent to this incident, India imposed bans on various Chinese mobile applications.

Brazil wishes to re-establish its trade and political ties with Cuba, said a top foreign aide to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Friday (August 18), after a meeting with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel in Havana.&nbsp;

"We want to make the relationship between Brazil and Cuba one of great friendships," Lula's adviser Celso Amorim said during the trip to Havana.

"That will contribute to peace in our region, and that's the greatest goal of diplomacy, alongside economic growth," said Amorim, who previously served as foreign minister under both Lula and former President Itamar Franco.

He also said that health expert groups and representatives from Brazil's agricultural sector will soon travel to Cuba.&nbsp;

The relations between Brazil and Cuba were strong during Lula's leftist Workers Party's regime, which was between the years 2003 and 2016. The ties were strained when far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro came to power.

In 2019, which was the first year of Bolsonaro's administration, for the very first time Brazil had voted against an annual United Nations resolution where it denounced and called for an end to the US economic embargo on Communist-ruled Cuba.

However, after Lula resumed office in January this year to serve his third non-consecutive term, Latin America's largest economy has been looking to once again bolster its ties with the Caribbean island nation. &nbsp;

Cuba played a significant role in Brazil's "More Doctors" which was an initiative taken by the government that recruited foreign doctors to work primarily in remote areas of the country.

Bolsonaro was a critic of the program and ended it when he came to power, a decision that led to tension with the Cuban government.

Lula and Diaz-Canel had already held talks in June in Paris, in a meeting the Cuban leader described as "fraternal."

Brazil intends to restore trade and political ties with Cuba

Legal troubles are mounting for former Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro. As per reports, police are probing Bolsonaro's personal financial records and communications over a Rolex-peddling scheme allegedly masterminded by the ex-president.

<h2>'Circle is closing'</h2>

As per Reuters, Bolsonaro is currently under scrutiny in a congressional inquiry related to the January 8 invasion of government buildings by his followers, as well as several police investigations overseen by the Supreme Court.

Speaking to Reuters on the condition of anonymity, at least two of his close allies speculated if Bolsonaro may soon end up behind bars.

In the latest turn of events, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has authorised investigators to access Bolsonaro and his wife Michelle's confidential phone and bank records.&nbsp;

She alleged that this is a political persecution aiming to tarnish her family's name.

Brazil: Bolsonaro's legal troubles mount as SC Justice authorises probe into his finances

Brazil will import a record quantity of Russian fuel this month. That will strengthen Russia's position as Latin America's leading supplier as Moscow develops new markets after a European union boycott. Energy analytics company Kpler ltd. predicts a 25% increase in Russian petroleum imports to 235,000 barrels a day by July.

Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of paying a hacker to tamper with electronic voting machines (EVM). Appearing before a congressional inquiry on Thursday, a Brazilian hacker has testified that Bolsonaro had asked him to manipulate an EVM.

Reportedly, this was intended to serve as proof to the former president's claims that the Brazil's electoral system was vulnerable to fraud during the presidential campaign held last year.

<h2>Proving the point with 'a&nbsp;blank cheque'</h2>

The hacker in question, computer programmer Walter Delgatti, alleged that he was summoned for a meeting with then-President Bolsonaro in August.&nbsp;

As per Delgatti, his meeting with Jair Bolsonaro was set up by right-wing lawmaker Carla Zambelli, who paid the hacker 40,000 reais (USD 8,000) for his services.

He claimed that during the meeting, Bolsonaro allegedly urged him to consult experts at the defence ministry regarding the 'request'. Purportedly Bolsonaro even offered to grant Delgatti a pardon in the event he faced legal consequences for the tampering.

Delgatti revealed, "He gave me a blank cheque&nbsp;to do what I wanted with the voting machines."

"The idea was to take a machine ... so I could install my app there and show the population that it is possible to press the button for one vote and end up with another."

Delgatti further revealed that he was unable to hack a voting machine as per Bolsonaro's request.

<h2>Troubles mount for Bolsonaro</h2>

This revelation comes in the wake of an electoral court decision that has rendered Bolsonaro ineligible for public office until 2030. This decision, as per Reuters, was taken due to his abusing his presidential powers to undermine trust in Brazil's electoral system.&nbsp;

Speaking to Reuters, a person close to the Bolsonaro family described Delgatti's allegations as "devastating."&nbsp;

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/bolsonaro-denies-plotting-coup-to-stay-in-power-614897">Brazil ex-president Bolsonaro denies plotting coup to stay in power</a>

During an interview with local broadcaster Jovem Pan, Bolsonaro rejected the accusations. However, he confirmed his meeting with the hacker.&nbsp;

Proving the point with 'a blank cheque' The hacker in question, computer programmer Walter Delgatti, alleged that he was summoned for a meeting with then-President Bolsonaro in August. Also read | Brazil: Police raid Bolsonaro aides over jewels probe As per Delgatti, his meeting with Jair Bolsonaro was set up by right-wing lawmaker Carla Zambelli, who paid the hacker 40,000 reais (USD 8,000) for his services. He claimed that during the meeting, Bolsonaro allegedly urged him to consult experts at the defence ministry regarding the 'request'. Purportedly Bolsonaro even offered to grant Delgatti a pardon in the event he faced legal consequences for the tampering. Delgatti revealed, "He gave me a blank cheque to do what I wanted with the voting machines." "The idea was to take a machine ... so I could install my app there and show the population that it is possible to press the button for one vote and end up with another." Delgatti further revealed that he was unable to hack a voting machine as per Bolsonaro's request. Troubles mount for Bolsonaro This revelation comes in the wake of an electoral court decision that has rendered Bolsonaro ineligible for public office until 2030. This decision, as per Reuters, was taken due to his abusing his presidential powers to undermine trust in Brazil's electoral system. Speaking to Reuters, a person close to the Bolsonaro family described Delgatti's allegations as "devastating." However, he confirmed his meeting with the hacker. "There was the meeting and I sent him to the defence ministry to talk to technicians. He was there, and the matter died down," he said. A statement by Bolsonaro's lawyers vowed legal action against the hacker and asserted that Delgatti's testimony contained false information and was "totally devoid of any kind of proof, including committing, in thesis, the crime of slander." Defying the fashion world's narrow stereotype of beauty, Brazilian plus-size designer Amanda Momente poses confidently for the camera, wearing the clothing label she founded after failing to find other options that fit.

More than half of all adults in Brazil are overweight, but Momente is part of a growing movement of entrepreneurs, activists and models who are fed up with a fashion industry they say fails to fit their needs and shames them for their bodies.

"Society judged me based on one thing, so I took that thing and used it... to launch my business," says Momente, 34, dressed in a sheer black bodysuit created by Wondersize, the company she founded in 2017.

The former real-estate agent, who sports a pink mohawk and multiple tattoos, got the idea after feeling uncomfortable at the gym in clothes she says were too tight, turned transparent when stretched or bunched up around her thighs.

She decided to find a seamstress to help her make her own workout outfit.

It turned out so well she quit her day job and plunged headfirst into the fashion world, she says.

The rise of colorful, stylish clothes for Brazilians with large bodies is part of a broader international trend rejecting unrealistic standards of beauty, especially for women.

The fashion industry needs to fit our bodies, not the other way around," says Momente.

- 'Identity and dignity' -

Major brands tend to dedicate at most a small portion of their lines to clothing in larger sizes, leaving "repressed" demand, says Marcela Liz, head of the Brazil Plus Size Association.

The plus-size sector grew in Brazil more than 75 percent in the decade through 2021, reaching sales of 9.6 billion reais (about $1.9 billion) that year, according to the association.

It projects sales will hit 15 billion reais by 2027 in Latin America's biggest economy.

"Supply has improved, but we're still not meeting demand," says Liz.

The nascent industry sashayed through Sao Paulo this month at the Pop Plus fair, where indie designers showed off sparkling skirts, racy tops, T-shirts stamped with bold statements and other clothes in sizes ranging up to 70.

"The market saw fat people as people who didn't like fashion, who just wanted to hide their bodies," says Flavia Durante, the activist who founded the fair in 2012.

"We had clothes, not fashion," she told AFP.

"Fashion isn't just about consumption. It's about identity and dignity."

- More work to do -

TV presenter and plus-size model Letticia Munniz has strutted the runway at glitzy Sao Paulo fashion week, made the cover of glossy magazines and been the face of numerous ad campaigns.

But she says real inclusion remains a long way off for the overweight and obese in Brazil -- 57 percent and 23 percent of the adult population, respectively, in the country of 203 million people.

"Things have improved, but our work is still seen as just checking a quota box. We're not seen as real equals," she says.

The activist and influencer, who usually wears custom-made clothes, says she is glad to see more plus sizes on runways -- but adds that doesn't necessarily mean they are actually available in stores.

She encourages her more than one million followers on social media to love themselves as they are.

"When you find something made to exalt your body instead of hide it, it changes everything," she says in one post.

A blackout hit large parts of Brazil Tuesday (Aug 15) which left people without power in at least 19 states of the country, reported local media. The outage was first reported at 8:31 AM local time, causing a blackout in the north and northeast regions.

The massive outage disrupted public transportation and health services in some areas. Passengers had to be evacuated from subway lines in major cities, including Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Salvador. Traffic on the roads was also disrupted as traffic lights stopped working in major cities.

<h2>What was the cause of the blackout?</h2>

Brazil’s National System Operator (ONS) is yet to disclose the cause of the problem. However, G1 news website quoted an official as saying that the cause of the blackout must be “operational” as no drought alert could impact energy production and distribution.

Mysterious blackout in Brazil leaves people without power in 19 states

Brazil will be embarking on an ambitious 350 billion dollar 'growth acceleration' plan. The new economic plan pushes for more public-private partnership and greater focus on ecological transition. The plan is the brainchild of Lula da Silva, who first implemented it during his first tenure in the mid-2000s.

Police in Brazil on Friday (August 11) raided homes of aides of former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro. These aides have been accused of reselling gifts from foreign dignitaries, including jewellery for the "illicit enrichment of" the former president.

Bolsonaro, a divisive right-winger, has categorically denied allegations of wrongdoing. His lawyers have said that he "never appropriated or misappropriated any public good," in a statement posted on the G1 news site.

The scandal was reported earlier this year. The newspaper Estado de Sao Paulo reported that customs officials had seized some jewels from a government aide. The aide had attempted to bring them into the country undeclared in his backpack in 2021.

According to Brazilian law, public officials are barred from keeping expensive gifts.

Elements of the police investigation were disclosed in a judgment by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes to justify search warrants carried out by federal police on Friday at the homes of former Bolsonaro aides.

"The evidence collected showed (the existence) during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro, of a network to divert goods of a high amount which were offered to him," part of the judgment read.

"Beyond allowing an inadmissible enrichment of the President of the Republic... it is possible that the Brazilian head of state was co-opted by foreign nations through these assets,"&nbsp;investigators believe.

The investigators also reported goods placed in "a suitcase transported on the presidential plane on December 30". At that time, Bolsonaro was leaving Brazil for the United States. This was two days before the inauguration of his successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The state gifts include two sculptures given by Bahrain during a state visit in 2021. They also include gifts from Saudi Arabia. This consisted of a luxury watch and a luxury fountain pen.

One of those suspected of reselling these gifts is Mauro Cid, a former top aide to Bolsonaro, who has been in prison since May over falsification of Covid-19 vaccination certificates.

Investigators say that Cid mentioned in an audio message that "25,000 dollars in cash" would be obtained which will be for the ex-president.

Known for a brash style that earned him the nickname "Tropical Trump," Bolsonaro, the former army captain turned congressman surged to prominence as a presidential candidate in 2018 by playing to voters disgusted with corruption and economic mismanagement.

After presiding over a presidency marked by scandals including his handling of Covid-19, Bolsonaro has now been barred from office for eight years over his unproven claims of massive fraud in the country's election system.

Brazil: Police raid Bolsonaro aides over jewels probe

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva opened what he called a “landmark” summit, on Tuesday (August 8), calling for the leaders of seven other Amazon rainforest countries to reach a broad agreement on a range of issues aimed at saving the Amazon.&nbsp;

<h2>Eight-nation summit</h2>

The two-day meeting of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) kicked off in Brazil’s northern city of Belem, at the mouth of the Amazon River. The eight-nation grouping set up in 1995, comprising&nbsp;South American countries that share the Amazon basin – Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela – gathered for the first in 14 years.&nbsp;

The countries have sought to formulate a regional pact on issues like stopping deforestation by 2030, ending illegal gold mining, and cooperating on cross-border policing of environmental crime.&nbsp;

Leaders from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, and Peru and representatives of Ecuador, Suriname and Venezuela, in attendance, are expected to announce the final agreement, known as the Belem Declaration, later on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The summit is seen as a rehearsal for the upcoming 2025 United Nations climate talks, which will also be hosted in Belem.&nbsp;

Amazon rainforest, often regarded as the world’s lungs, is home to 10 per cent of Earth’s biodiversity, 50 million people and hundreds of billions of trees as well as a vital carbon sink to reduce global warming.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Never been so urgent’</h2>

The summit was also seen in line with Lula’s pledge&nbsp;on the campaign trail last year to convene the summit in a bid to restore Brazil’s environmental leadership after deforestation in the Amazon soared under his predecessor Jair Bolsanaro.&nbsp;

“This is a landmark meeting. It will mark a turning point in the history of protecting the Amazon,” said the Brazilian president, during his opening remarks. He also went on to emphasise the “severe worsening of the climate crisis".

“The challenges of our era, and the opportunities arising from them, demand we act in unison,” said Lula. He added, “It has never been so urgent.”&nbsp;

The Brazilian president also said that the countries will “discuss and promote a new vision of sustainable, inclusive development in the region”.

Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina Silva has previously reported that deforestation was down by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/amazon-deforestation-down-nearly-60-compared-to-july-last-year-brazil-621874">at least 60 per cent</a> in July, compared to the same month last year in the Brazilian Amazon. This followed another report released last month which stated that deforestation was down <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/amazon-deforestation-down-nearly-34-during-lulas-first-six-months-in-office-612995">34 per cent</a> in the first six months of the year.&nbsp;

<h2>
What do we know about the Belem Declaration?</h2>

A report by Reuters citing an anonymous Brazilian government source, said that the Belem Declaration will likely include financing mechanisms for sustainable development, provisions for including indigenous leaders in policy making, and shared strategies for tackling deforestation.

Silva told Reuters, last week, that one of the aims of the summit is to set up a scientific body like the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which will share research on the Amazon and help produce policies independent of the governments. It will also monitor the impact of climate change on the Amazon rainforest and ecosystem, she added.

CNN Brasil, citing a leaked draft of the declaration, said that the agreement may protest what the countries see as unfair trade barriers implemented in the name of environmental protection.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a report by Al Jazeera said that while the first draft contains a “range of good intentions”, no concrete dates have been put forward by the leaders to put their plan into effect.&nbsp;

Scientists have warned the destruction of the Amazon rainforest is pushing it dangerously close to a “tipping point,” beyond which it would die off and release carbon rather than absorb it, which would have catastrophic consequences for the environment.&nbsp;

South American leaders meet to forge shared policy for saving Amazon at ‘landmark’ summit

India is likely to look at key partners in Latin America and Africa to establish bilateral agreements to carry out trade deals using local currencies, after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Indonesia. This comes in the backdrop of India’s plan to internationalise the rupee, Moneycontrol quoted a government official as saying.

According to the official, nations such as Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Senegal, and Tanzania are likely to be the next set of nations for India’s bilateral local currency settlement push, as the country plans to convince smaller countries first to accept payment in rupees for transactions.

“If we have to push rupee trade, we have to start with smaller nations where it would be easier to give a push rupee internationalisation,” the official said on condition of anonymity, adding that the proposals are preliminary and would require further discussions.&nbsp;

As of 2022–2023, New Delhi has a trade surplus with Tanzania and Brazil of $1.39 billion and $3.25 billion, respectively. According to data from the commerce ministry during the time period, the trade deficit with South Africa, Senegal, and Argentina is minimal.

According to previous reports by Moneycontrol, the Indian government’s choice of partners for its bilateral currency settlement plan will be based on the possibility to increase trade as well as balance the trade difference between the two nations. India either has a small trade deficit or a trade surplus with African and Latin American nations.

The main items that India exports to these countries are grains, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, and petroleum products. While Brazil and Argentina are the primary import sources for India’s needs for edible oil, India also imports fertilisers, cotton, and toys from South Africa. Senegal and Tanzania are crucial in meeting New Delhi’s demands for diamonds and jewellery.

New Delhi signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UAE last month In order to use the rupee and the dirham to settle bilateral transactions. A local currency settlement plan was also discussed with Indonesia during talks between the two countries on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Gandhinagar in the mid-July.

According to reports, India is also considering Bangladesh and Sri Lanka for its local currency settlement plan as the two neighbours are experiencing a currency shortage.

India is likely to look at key partners in Latin America and Africa to establish bilateral agreements to carry out trade deals using local currencies, after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Indonesia.

“If we have to push rupee trade, we have to start with smaller nations where it would be easier to give a push rupee internationalisation,” the official said on condition of anonymity, adding that the proposals are preliminary and would require further discussions. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Experts have now warned the Brazilian Amazon could be in for a bad Burning Season despite a drop in deforestation. The accumulated destruction over the years and the arrival of El Nino could turn the Amazon into a Tinderbox. Looking out over the forest from an airplane a Greenpeace team spotted several fires in the area. The height of the annual burning season usually falls in August and September.

Brazil's Operation Shield: At least nine killed in new clash between police and gangs

Argentina&nbsp;would not use “a single dollar” of its own reserves to repay the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a&nbsp;Reuters report quoted&nbsp;economy minister Sergio Massa&nbsp;as saying on Monday.&nbsp;

As per reports, the South American nation has to repay $2.7 billion to the IMF this week.

In a speech, Massa, who is also running for presidency this October, claimed that the prolonged swap agreement with China and the new loan from the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) will make it possible.

Reuters quoted Massa as saying, “I want to bring you peace of mind - Argentina is not going to use a single dollar of its reserves to pay today's maturity."&nbsp;

Massa stated that the payback will be completed with a $1.7 billion second tranche of a swap with China and a $1 billion bridge loan from CAF, a step recently taken by Buenos Aires to complete a portion of its June payment to the IMF.

The move is being seen as an attempt to 'de-dollarise'. Already, countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Bangladesh, and India are using Chinese Yuan and bitcoin for international trade and payments.

According to reports from February this year, Brazil and Argentina were in talks to launch a joint currency, called the “sur”. Officials from Argentina and Brazil stated that the true goal of the initiative is to create a new unit of account (a synthetic currency similar to the International Monetary Fund’s Special Drawing Rights) for denominating bilateral trade and financial flows as an alternative to the US dollar.

Despite the near-universal rejection of the idea, the goal at its core—a reduced reliance on the US dollar—is worth considering, as per experts.&nbsp;A push for broader economic union in South America may spur much-needed economic growth, a Centre for International &amp; Strategic Studies report said.&nbsp;

Argentina, which has been struggling with severe economic crisis with sky-high inflation and declining central bank reserves, has been trying to prevent a debt default with the IMF.&nbsp;

The world's oldest man, Jose Paulino Gomes, has died just one week shy of his 128th birthday.&nbsp;

A resident of Brazil, Gomes as per local media reports, died just seven days before his birthday at his home in Corrego del Cafe in Pedra Bonita, Minas Gerais state, on Friday.&nbsp;

<h2>Three pandemics, discovery of X-ray and more</h2>

As per Mirror UK, the centenarian must have lived through not just one, but three pandemics, the two world wars and was born&nbsp;even before the death of British Queen Victoria.

His birth certificate for the year 1917 shows that he was born on 4th August 1895, which means he was born before the first-ever high school proms (1920s) and the discovery of X-rays (November 1985).

Willyan Jose Rodrigues de Souza, a legal adviser to a registry office in nearby Pedra Bonita, as quoted by Daily Mail, said, "According to the record, he got married at 22 years old. It is presumed that he was indeed born before 1900. Men rarely got married at 17."

If the records are true, Jose would have been the oldest known person in the world.

According to his family, the 127-year-old died from multiple organ failure, likely due to his advanced age.

<h2>What was the secret of his ripe old age?</h2>

Speaking to local media, his granddaughter Eliane Ferreira said that Gomes, who had seven children, 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren, "was very simple, very humble. His uniqueness was that he didn't like anything industrialised, only things from the countryside, natural."

Previously having worked as an animal tamer, the 127-year-old "raised chickens, pigs... his food was all from here, had to be grown or raised here. And he always liked to have a little drink," she added.

<h2>World's "new" oldest person</h2>

According to the Guinness World Records, the holder of the record is 115-year-old Maria Branyas Morera from Spain.

Gomes's age is an estimate based on his marriage certificate.&nbsp;As per his granddaughter, "Here in the countryside, people are usually registered when they are older."

"There are several cases with incorrect documentation. But his documentation showed he was younger than he actually was," she added.

World's oldest man who lived through three pandemics dies a week before 128th birthday

Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da silva has now signed an executive order that tightens civilian access to firearms. This move slows down the surge in gun ownership that skyrocketed during the presidency of his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro.

The Brazilian constitution made history as it received its first-ever official translation into an Indigenous language, marking a significant moment for the country and its native populations.

The ceremony, held in São Gabriel da Cachoeira, a town deep in the Amazon, was attended by esteemed Brazilian authorities and Indigenous leaders, reported the Guardian.

<h2>An important milestone in constitutional history</h2>

Chief Justice Rosa Weber of the supreme court, the guardian of the constitution, expressed the significance of the event, calling it a milestone in the constitutional history of Brazil.

The 1988 constitution, drafted during the transition from a two-decades-long military dictatorship, recognised and protected the culture and way of life of Indigenous Brazilians, owing to the active involvement of the Indigenous movement.

However, despite these protections, Indigenous Brazilians had never been able to access their constitutional rights in their own language.

This historic translation into Nheengatu, also known as the Amazonian general language, bridges that gap, being the only living modern version of Tupi and serving as a lingua franca among different Amazonian groups.

<h2>The translation efforts and their impact</h2>

The translation project was coordinated by Brazil's national justice council and carried out by a team of 15 bilingual Indigenous people from the Alto Río Negro and Médio Tapajós regions.

Inory Kamari, one of the translators, who spoke the Guardian,&nbsp;touched upon&nbsp;the importance of promoting Indigenous languages, stating that, as people, they have the right to respect and recognition.

With over 305 ethnic groups speaking 274 Indigenous languages, the publication of the translated constitution is seen as a crucial step toward preserving Brazil's rich cultural and linguistic diversity.

It also helps raise awareness about Indigenous rights and ensures fairer treatment within the state's legal framework.

<h2>Advocating for implementation</h2>

While the Indigenous translation of the constitution is a major achievement, advocates emphasise that its true impact will depend on the application of the principles laid out within it.

Despite constitutional protections, Indigenous rights in Brazil have been under constant threat, particularly during the tenure of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has denied allegations of plotting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, media reports said. This came after, on June 30, the electoral justice system found Bolsonaro guilty of "abuses of power" during his campaign for a second term and banned him from seeking or holding public office for eight years.&nbsp;

Bolsonaro was questioned by the Federal Police for two hours regarding accusations made by Senator Marcos do Val. Bolsonaro stated that he had no relationship with the senator but admitted to meeting with him and former lawmaker Daniel Silveira in December 2022.&nbsp;

However, Bolsonaro said that the meeting focused on political matters and not on conspiracies or coups. The former president also reaffirmed his commitment to the constitutional order and stated that he would never agree to such a plot.

<h2>Alleged plot</h2>

Senator Marcos do Val, who has given multiple conflicting accounts since February, claimed that Bolsonaro and Silveira encouraged him to arrange a meeting with Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who also presides over The Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the highest body of the Brazilian electoral justice.&nbsp;

According to do Val, the plan involved secretly recording the conversation with de Moraes and inducing him to make biased statements in favour of Lula, which could then be used to invalidate the election and keep Bolsonaro in power. Bolsonaro, however, denied that the name of Alexandre de Moraes was mentioned during the December 8 meeting.

<h2>Investigation&nbsp;</h2>

De Moraes revealed that do Val informed him about the alleged plot in December but did not file a formal criminal complaint. De Moraes considered the accusations unofficial and dismissed them as "ridiculous."&nbsp;

“He told me that it was a question of ‘intelligence’ and that he could not confirm it. I just thanked him, because what is not official does not exist,” the judge said earlier in relation to the matter.&nbsp;

However, after do Val made the allegations public, de Moraes ordered an investigation as part of a broader probe into the events of January 8, when Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in an attempt to incite a military coup against Lula.

Bolsonaro's statement to the Federal Police on Wednesday marked the fourth time he has been questioned since returning to Brazil from his trip to Florida before Lula's inauguration.&nbsp;

The investigations also involve allegations related to expensive jewellery he received from Saudi Arabia and failed to declare, as well as corruption and fraud linked to his administration's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has denied allegations of plotting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, media reports said.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has denied allegations of plotting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, media reports said. This came after, on June 30, the electoral justice system found Bolsonaro guilty of "abuses of power" during his campaign for a second term and banned him from seeking or holding public office for eight years. Bolsonaro was questioned by the Federal Police for two hours regarding accusations made by Senator Marcos do Val. Bolsonaro stated that he had no relationship with the senator but admitted to meeting with him and former lawmaker Daniel Silveira in December 2022. The former president also reaffirmed his commitment to the constitutional order and stated that he would never agree to such a plot. Alleged plot Senator Marcos do Val, who has given multiple conflicting accounts since February, claimed that Bolsonaro and Silveira encouraged him to arrange a meeting with Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who also presides over The Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the highest body of the Brazilian electoral justice. Bolsonaro, however, denied that the name of Alexandre de Moraes was mentioned during the December 8 meeting. Investigation De Moraes revealed that do Val informed him about the alleged plot in December but did not file a formal criminal complaint. De Moraes considered the accusations unofficial and dismissed them as "ridiculous." “He told me that it was a question of ‘intelligence’ and that he could not confirm it. I just thanked him, because what is not official does not exist,” the judge said earlier in relation to the matter. Bolsonaro's statement to the Federal Police on Wednesday marked the fourth time he has been questioned since returning to Brazil from his trip to Florida before Lula's inauguration. The investigations also involve allegations related to expensive jewellery he received from Saudi Arabia and failed to declare, as well as corruption and fraud linked to his administration's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
