Disgraced former Brazil footballer Dani Alves has been granted bail, a Barcelona court ruled on Wednesday. The court said Alves would be able to secure the conditional release after paying the $1.08 million bail bond fee.

The former Barcelona player will be coming out of jail after serving about a quarter of his four-and-a-half-year sentence for rape, handed to him last month.

The Brazilian had appealed the sentence and requested to be released on bail at a hearing, reiterating that he would not flee the country.

"I believe in justice. I’m not going to run away and I will be at the disposal of the court until the end," said Alves during the bail hearing.

On Wednesday, the court read out the conditions for Alves' release which include relinquishing both his Brazilian and Spanish passports so he cannot leave Spain as well as an obligation to appear before the court on a weekly basis. Cumulatively, Alves has so far spent 14 months behind bars.

Alves was handed the prison sentence last month after being found guilty in a December 2022 sexual assault case. He was also ordered to pay 50,000 Euros ($162,990) to the victim.

The second-most decorated footballer of all time in terms of trophies won, Alves was accused of raping a woman in the bathroom of Sutton Nightclub VIP section on New Year’s Eve in 2022.

"The court considers as proven the fact that the defendant abruptly grabbed the complainant, threw her to the ground and penetrated her vaginally, preventing her from moving, while the complainant said no and wanted to leave," the Barcelona court ruled.

"The sentence considers that it has been proven that the victim did not consent and that there is evidence, in addition to the testimony of the plaintiff, to consider the rape proven," it added.

In total, the former fullback is also hit with a nine-and-a-half-year restraining order, as upon release, Alves will have to complete five years' worth of probation, per the court orders.

The victim, who testified behind a screen to protect her identity, said Alves had violently forced her to have sex in a private bathroom of the nightclub despite her begging him to release her, causing her "anguish and terror", prosecutors said.

Facebook-parent Meta on Friday won an appeal overturning a previous court ruling that barred it from using its name in Brazil due to confusion with another company.

Mark Zuckerberg's tech company was in late February ordered to stop using its name in Brazil within 30 days after a Brazilian computer services provider won a favourable ruling arguing it already owned rights to the name and had as a result of the U.S. branding been wrongly cited in over 100 lawsuits.

Brazil is escalating its fight against a severe outbreak of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, by implementing a strategy of releasing bacteria-infected mosquitoes across six cities. Anti-dengue mosquitoes typically refer to genetically modified mosquitoes that are used to combat the spread of dengue fever. These mosquitoes are engineered to carry a gene that either kills them before they reach adulthood or renders them unable to transmit the dengue virus.

Dengue fever is more prevalent in wetter environments and is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes thrive in warm, tropical and subtropical climates, and breed in stagnant water.

With 1.6 million probable cases reported since January, matching the total for the previous year, and 491 confirmed deaths, Brazil is intensifying its response efforts. Health authorities are ramping up preventive measures, including thorough inspections for stagnant water containers that serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

The Wolbachia method, named after a bacteria not naturally found in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, has shown promise in mitigating dengue transmission. Already implemented in five Brazilian cities, the method has safeguarded 3.2 million individuals.

An expansion, funded at 80 million reais, will extend coverage to an additional 1.7 million people in six new municipalities. The initiative involves breeding Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, affectionately nicknamed "wolbitos" by Brazilians, in a Rio de Janeiro laboratory.

These mosquitoes will then be released to suppress the Aedes aegypti population.

Brazil escalates fight against dengue fever outbreak with bacteria-infected mosquitoes

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro had presented a plan for him to stay in power after he lost the 2022 election to his successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, two Brazilian military leaders told the police according to new court documents released on Friday (Mar 15).

What did the military leaders say?

The judicial documents released by the country’s Supreme Court presented damning testimonies by former army commander Marco Antonio Freire Gomes and former air force chief Carlos de Almeida Baptista Jr which placed Bolsonaro at the centre of the plan which involved declaring martial law to stop Lula from taking office.

The two former military commanders told the Brazilian Federal Police that Bolsonaro had allegedly presented them with a plan during meetings at the presidential palace on December 7, 2022.

However, in their testimonies, Gomes and Baptista Jr said that they refused to carry out the plan and warned the then-president that they would arrest him if he tried it.

Notably, their statements include the first direct mentions of Bolsonaro’s active participation in conspiring and ignoring the outcome of the 2022 elections.

The testimonies also implicated Navy commander Almir Garnier Santos in the coup plans, who told the then-president that the Naval forces were ready to support him.

Investigation against Bolsonaro

On January 8, 2023, thousands of Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed government buildings, including the presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court, and shut down highways after his loss. Meanwhile, the then-president left for the United States to avoid handing the presidency to Lula.

In February, Brazil’s police seized Bolsonaro’s passport and arrested some of his closest aides amid the ongoing investigation into the alleged coup attempt. However, the former president has denied the allegations against him despite mounting evidence that points to the contrary, while the damning testimonies add to his legal woes.

Brazil urges G20 to enforce global tax on super-rich in battle against tax evasion

Nearly 3,000 forest fires were registered in the Brazilian Amazon this month, the highest for any February since records began in 1999, and made more likely by climate change, according to experts.

Brazil's INPE space research institute said Wednesday its satellites had picked up 2,940 fires so far this month, 67 percent more than the previous high of 1,761 recorded in February 2007 and four times more than in the same month last year.

"The climate factor certainly plays a fundamental role in this anomaly," Ane Alencar, scientific director of the IPAM Amazonia research institute, told AFP.

The northern part of the rainforest was hardest hit, particularly the state of Roraima, home to the Yanomami Indigenous reserve.

"We have seen the Earth break... temperature records. Every year is the hottest year and this has a synergy with climate phenomena" such as droughts, said Alencar.

Drought devastated the Brazilian Amazon between June and November last year, stoking huge fires, reducing or wiping out major water reserves, wreaking havoc with wildlife and affecting millions of people.

A study last month by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) said climate change was the main driver of the "exceptional drought" in the world's largest rainforest.

The WWA is a scientific project that seeks to quantify how climate change influences the intensity and likelihood of a particular extreme weather event.

Such environmental "stress," said Alencar, "generates all the necessary conditions for each fire to become a large fire," adding that some of the blazes may have been the result of forest clearing for agriculture.

Deforestation halved

Figures released last month showed that deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon had fallen by half last year as President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government bolstered environmental policing.

Satellite monitoring detected 5,152 square kilometers (nearly 2,000 square miles) of forest cover destroyed in the Brazilian part of the rainforest last year, down 50 percent from 2022.

That still represented a loss 29 times the size of Washington DC in Brazil's share of the world's biggest rainforest, whose carbon-absorbing trees play a vital role in curbing climate change.

After beating far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in a divisive election in 2022, veteran leftist Lula returned to office on January 1, 2023 vowing "Brazil is back" as a partner in the fight against climate change.

He also vowed to end illegal deforestation in Brazil by 2030.

Agribusiness ally Bolsonaro (2019-2022) had drawn international criticism for presiding over a 75-percent increase in average annual deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon versus the previous decade.

Nearly 3,000 fires in Brazilian Amazon in February, new record

Fueled by unusually warm weather, wildfires in Brazil have ravaged over several acres, prompting widespread evacuations and road closures. Climate change has been denoted as the root cause of wildfires.

Unanticipated fires put Brazil's indigenous communities at risk

Drought conditions and heatwaves have caused an unprecedented number of fires this year. Thereby, the estimated carbon emissions in three south american countries - Brazil, Venezuela and Bolivia - in February this year have been the highest for the month in 21 years.

Brazil's ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, on Sunday (Feb 25th) flexed his political muscle, gathering thousands of supporters at São Paulo's iconic Paulista Avenue to demonstrate political strength amid investigations that many believe could land him in jail.

Hitting out at the election ban that has barred him from seeking office for eight years, Bolsonaro said, "We cannot accept that an authority can eliminate whoever it may be from the political scene unless it is for a fair reason."

Alleged coup attempt

Surrounded by a massive crowd of supporters, Bolsonaro denied allegations that he plotted a coup to stay in power after losing elections in October 2022.

Earlier this month, on February 8, Brazil investigators launched "Operation Tempus Veritatis," a Latin term which translates to "Hour of Truth." Under it, the police carried out dozens of search and seizure raids and even arrested several Bolsonaro allies.

Investigators allege that the ex-president used anti-democratic manoeuvres, including attempts to discredit Brazil's electronic voting system. This "disinformation" campaign they claim was meant to "legitimise a military intervention" if Bolsonaro lost.

The leader has also been accused of editing a draft presidential decree that would have declared a state of emergency in the nation, called for new elections and ordered the arrest of the head of Brazil's Superior Electoral Tribunal, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva once again branded Israel's military offensive in the Gaza Strip a "genocide" at an event in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (Feb 23). He also called for a "free and sovereign Palestinian state" during the event.

"I am in favour of the creation of a free and sovereign Palestinian state," Lula said.

"What…Israel is doing is not a war, it is genocide because it is killing women and children," he said.

"It is a genocide. Thousands of children are dead and thousands are missing. Soldiers are not dying. Women and children are dying at the hospital," he said. "If that's not genocide, I don't know what genocide is," he added.

The Brazilian president's remarks come amid a diplomatic row between the South American nation and Israel after Lula controversially compared its campaign in Gaza to the Holocaust.

Drawing a comparison between Israeli military actions and Adolf Hitler's campaign to exterminate the Jewish people, Lula on Sunday (Feb 18) said "What's happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people hasn't happened at any other moment in history. Actually, it has happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews."

Following this, the Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Monday (Feb 19) declared that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is unwelcome in Israel until he retracts his remarks.

Labelling the comments as a "serious antisemitic attack" he said that the Brazilian leader is "persona non grata" until he takes back the remark.

Reacting to Lula's remarks, Netanyahu deemed them as "shameful and grave", and said that his government had called in Brazil's ambassador in protest.

Brazil's Lula calls for 'free and sovereign Palestinian state' amid Israel-Hamas war

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said on Thursday (Feb 22) that foreign ministers of G20 countries were nearly unanimous in supporting a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Vieira was speaking at the end of the two-day meeting of the foreign ministers.

"There was virtual unanimity in the two-state solution as the only solution to the conflict," said Mauro Vieira as quoted by Reuters. He further said that leaders of the world's largest economies expressed concerns about the ongoing Gaza conflict and the risk of the spread of hostilities into the wider Middle East region.

Vieira said that there were calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid for Gazans. He also added that 'many' countries were critical of Israel's military offensive in Rafah.

Rafah is a city in southern Gaza where people from the northern part of the Palestinian enclave were coming in order to escape fighting in the north. But now, Israel has launched strikes on Rafah, drawing condemnation from the global community.

The meeting, which set the agenda for the G20 group presided over by Brazil this year, discussed current tensions in the world, mainly focused on the fighting in Gaza and Ukraine.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said earlier that there was consensus on the need for a two-state solution in Israel, supported by every speaker who addressed the conflict.

"Everybody here, everybody, I haven't heard anyone against it. There was a strong request for a two-state solution," Borrell told reporters. "It is consensus among us."

"There is not going to be peace ... not going to be sustainable security for Israel unless the Palestinians have a clear political prospect to build their own state," he said.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu largely rejects the creation of a Palestinian state. The United States, Israel's biggest international backer, also maintains that a two-state solution is the feasible way to bring sustainable peace to the region.

Officials in the South African city of Cape Town launched an investigation on Monday (Feb 19) to look for the source of the foul stench which has blanketed parts of the port city.

The stench which covered parts of Cape Town prompted the officials to inspect sewage facilities for leaks and an environmental health team was activated before the source of the smell was traced back to a ship carrying 19,000 cows from Brazil to Iraq.

The city is expected to get some respite from the foul smell soon, as per city authorities. Zahid Badroodien, an official in the mayor’s office in charge of water and sanitation took to X and said that investigators confirmed that the source of the smell “across the city is a ship in the harbour”.
