Palaeontologists have discovered a new species of ancient crocodile-like reptile, which lived around 237 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The fossils were found in a fossiliferous locality named "Linha Várzea 2" in southern Brazil.&nbsp;

According to a paper published in Scientific Reports on Thursday (Jun 20), the fossils have now been dubbed Parvosuchus aurelioi, which is a new ancient species of small predatory reptiles. The new species is part of a group of reptiles that resemble crocodiles called pseudosuchians.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agency Reuters, the lead author of the paper, Rodrigo Muller, who is a palaeontologist at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, said that the new species is the first "unequivocal" gracilisuchid, an extinct genus of small pseudosuchians.&nbsp;

Muller added, "The Gracilisuchidae are rare organisms in the fossil registry. Up to now, we had only seen three species: two in China and one in Argentina. So the discovery of the Parvosuchus aurelioi brings the number of known species in the world to four. It is the first uncontested Gracilisuchidae in Brazil."&nbsp;

He added that when dinosaurs appeared, at a later moment in the evolution history of Earth, the Gracilisuchidae were completely extinct, with some of the fossils showing how they became smaller than 30 centimetres (11.8 inches) in length. There are also other descendants that later became alligators and crocodiles.&nbsp;

He said that the fossil remains covered by a thick layer of rock and only a few vertebrae were initially apparent. He further mentioned that portions of the cranium emerged from the rock, showing a whole skull, following the use of acid solutions and pneumatic hammers during the preparation procedure.&nbsp;

Muller said that as per estimate, the animal was about 6.5 feet long and had a long tail. The animal probably had four legs that were designed for walking on land. It had fangs that resembled blades that could rip through flesh.&nbsp;

Brazil was declared the host of the 2027 Women's World Cup at the FIFA Congress on Friday, beating the joint bid of Belgium, Netherlands and Germany to become the first South American country to hold the tournament.

The Brazil bid received the backing of 119 member associations of the FIFA Congress to host the 10th edition of the competition, compared to 78 votes for the European bid.

"We knew we would be celebrating a victory for South American women's soccer and for women," said president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues. "You can be sure, with no vanity, we will accomplish the best World Cup for women."

Brazil was given a slight edge in the run up to Friday's vote after a FIFA technical evaluation released last week gave it a score of four out of five, verses 3.7 for the Belgium-Netherlands-Germany (BNG) bid.

The race was whittled down to two last month after the United States and Mexico withdrew their joint bid to pursue the 2031 tournament instead.

The FIFA assessment scored each bid on criteria ranging from commercial viability, team facilities and accommodation, to broadcast sites, stadiums and fan festival venues.

It said Brazil's 10 stadiums were purpose-built and configured for major tournaments having hosted the 2014 men's World Cup and the bid had a strong commercial position and government commitment.

It highlighted the compact nature and support behind the Belgium-Netherlands-Germany bid, solid commercial viability, good infrastructure and short distances between venues, but also noted the smaller capacities of its 13 stadiums.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the Brazil tournament would be "the best Women's World Cup ever".

<h2>'FUTILE DEBATE'</h2>

In his opening remarks at the Congress, Infantino pledged to boost access to football worldwide and sought to end what he called a "futile debate" over the amount of matches being played.

He said FIFA was organising about 1% of club games and just 1% to 2% of national team matches, but was helping 70% of its members, which "would have no football without the resources" FIFA provides.

"I hope these figures will show that we should probably stop this futile debate, it's really pointless, and focus on what we need to do which is organise the best competitions and develop football around the world," he said.

The Congress also heard a Palestinian call for the suspension of Israel's football federation, accusing it of multiple violations of FIFA statutes, including over the Gaza conflict and the inclusion in Israeli leagues of teams located in Palestinian territory.

Infantino said a legal assessment of the allegations would be undertaken urgently, with the FIFA Council convening an extraordinary Congress in late July to address the issue.

Since an Oct. 7 cross-border raid by Hamas-led gunmen that Israel says killed more than 1,200 people, the offensive in Gaza has left more than 35,000 Palestinians dead, according to Gaza health officials. Israel says its strikes are targeted at militants.

The president of the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), Jibril Rajoub, had urged the Congress to hold a vote to suspend the Israel Football Association (IFA) from all football activity and to respect the Palestinian territory.

"FIFA cannot afford to remain indifferent to these violations or the ongoing genocide in Palestine," he said. "I ask you to stand on the right side of history... If not now, when?"

His Israeli counterpart Shino Moshe Zuares said no rules had been broken and the proposal had nothing to do with football.

"Once again, we are facing a cynical political and hostile attempt by the PFA to harm Israel," he said. "I am holding myself back ...in the hope things can be better for the game for those who play in Israel, the Palestinian authority and or those who play all over the world."

The death toll from severe flooding in southern&nbsp;Brazil&nbsp;has risen to 107, civil defense said on Thursday, as rescue operations continued and authorities began to see the cost of recovering from the devastation in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

In a dramatic symbol of the disaster, rescuers saved a horsethat had been trapped precariously for two days on a rooftop in a badly flooded town.

More rains are forecast in the coming days, raising fears that water levels will rise further in the inundated state capital of Porto Alegre and nearby town where streets have turned into rivers.

At least 136 people are still missing and more than 165,000 have been displaced from flooded homes and rescued by boats and helicopters.

Television images showed the horse straddling the roof of a farmhouse on the outskirts of Canoas, a town north of Porto Alegre. The animal was secured by firemen and loaded into a Zodiac inflatable boat to take it to safety.

The floods have destroyed infrastructure and bridges, blocking access to Porto Alegre, where supermarket shelves are empty and looting has been reported at night.

Governor Eduardo Leite said initial calculations indicate that Rio Grande do Sul will need at least 19 billion reais ($3.68 billion) to rebuild from the damage, which has extended into farm areas around the capital.

"The effect of the floods and the extent of the tragedy are devastating," he said on social media.

In Brasilia, the federal government estimated the fiscal impact of the flooding at 7.7 billion reais ($1.49 billion), mostly due to the injection of funds into a support program for small businesses hit by the floods.

"This doesn't end here," President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said at an event announcing steps to help the stricken state. Lula said the full extent of Rio Grande do Sul's needs would be known only when the water recedes.

Nearly 100,000 homes have been destroyed while over 100 people are reported dead in the devastating flooding in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul in the country's South. More than a week of record-breaking rainfall has taken a toll over lives and lifelines in this part of Brazil with authorities scrambling to rescue affected individuals.&nbsp;

<h2>Brazil Floods: What's the current status?</h2>

Brazil's National Confederation of Municipalities said in an update on Wednesday (May 8) that overflowing rivers and floods in the state have affected around 1.45 million people and forced some 200,000 residents to flee their homes, Xinhua news agency reported.

Nearly 100,000 homes of all types have been affected based on data from the Civil Defence agency. These many homes have sustained either total or partial damage since the state's worst weather-related disaster hit on April 29, according to the confederation.

The state also borders Argentina and Uruguay. As many as 414 of 497 towns in the state, which is also a top agricultural and livestock producer, have suffered from the storms and therefore declared emergencies.

The confederation estimates the economic losses at 4.6 billion reals (about $904 million), after it took into account the damage to housing and public infrastructure, as well as agriculture, livestock, industry, commerce and services.

In just one week, Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul saw five months' worth of rain, causing unprecedented flooding.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has promised that there would be "no lack of resources" in the rehabilitation of the displaced residents and that the rescue effort would continue till it achieves its objective.

"We understand the difficult financial situation faced by Rio Grande do Sul," he said at an event in Brasilia, adding he wanted to make sure the state would get "everything it is entitled to".

Rescuers rushed to evacuate people stranded by devastating floods across the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul on Tuesday, with 90 reported dead and desperate survivors seeking food and basic supplies.

On the outskirts of Eldorado do Sul, 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) from the state capital of Porto Alegre, many people who left their homes were sleeping on the roadside and told Reuters they were going hungry. Entire families were leaving on foot, carrying belongings in backpacks and shopping carts.

"We've been without food for three days and we've only just got this blanket. I'm with people I don't even know, I don't know where my family is," said a young man who gave his name as Ricardo Junior.

The flooding has hampered rescue efforts, with dozens of people still waiting to be evacuated by boat or helicopter from stricken homes. Small boats crisscrossed the flooded town searching for survivors.

The state's Civil Defense agency said the death toll has risen to 90 with another four deaths being investigated, while 131 people are still unaccounted for and 155,000 are homeless.

Heavy rains that began last week have caused rivers to flood, inundating whole towns and destroying roads and bridges.

In Porto Alegre, a city of 1.3 million inhabitants on the Guaiba river, downtown streets were under water.

Porto Alegre residents faced empty supermarket shelves and closed gas stations, with shops rationing sales of mineral water. The city distributed water in trucks to hospitals and shelters.

The floods have also impacted water and electricity services, with more than 1.4 million affected overall, according to Brazil's Civil Defense.

Almost half a million people were without power in Porto Alegre and outlying towns as electricity companies cut off supplies for security reasons in flooded neighborhoods. National grid operator ONS said five hydroelectric dams and transmission lines were shut down due to the heavy rains.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on a government television program that the extent of the damage will not be known until the waters subside. He promised federal aid for the state in what is considered its worst ever climate disaster.

JP Morgan economists projected that the impact of the floods on Brazil's economy would be a modest dent in GDP growth and a marginal increase in inflation, mainly due to higher prices for rice that is largely produced in Rio Grande do Sul.

Besides destroying critical infrastructure, the heavy rains and flooding have left grains fields under water and killed livestock, interrupting the soy harvest and halting work at multiple meat plants.

The Rio Grande port is operating normally, the state's port authority said. A major port for grain exports, it has not been affected by a rise in the level of the Laguna dos Patos lagoon which the swollen Guaiba river runs into.

However, main access roads were impassable, disrupting grain deliveries to the port as trucks had to make a wide detour, exporters said.
