A prolonged heavy rainstorm led to the postponement of qualifying at the Brazilian Grand Prix on Saturday as deteriorating conditions and poor light ended the day's action at Interlagos.

The session has been delayed until Sunday morning, in the hope the weather improves, but forecasts have suggested that may not be a foregone conclusion.

Officials later said qualifying will take place on Sunday at 1030 GMT with the start of the race brought forward 90 minutes due to concerns over the weather and will get underway at 1530 GMT.

As night began to fall on Saturday, drivers waved to fans on the pit-wall –- giving the big crowd who had waited for more than two hours in the rain -– some reward for their patience.

Formula One boss Stefano Domenicali confirmed the postponement at 1950 GMT and praised the fans inside the circuit for their patience and support.

"First of all, the fans here are incredible," he told F1TV. "But unfortunately, we cannot control the weather and it is just not safe to drive. It's as simple as that and problems too with the light make it worse so that's it.

"The plan now is to run in the morning and the final check will be made with a plan and details for the day."

He added: "I have to say the fans here are unique and we thank them for waiting so long, but it is impossible to race today."

The Safety Car was deployed to evaluate the conditions several times with marshals using brooms to clear deep pools of water around the circuit and in the paddock and pit lane.

After several inspections, it was announced the organisers hoped to begin the session at 1615 local (1915 GMT), but that proved to be impossible.

Many of the fans were Argentine supporters of Franco Colapinto of Williams who has made an impressive start to his F1 career this year as a mid-season deputy for American Logan Sargeant.

Mercedes driver George Russell said it "looks very wet out there but maybe some places are OK – other places there are big puddles."

His team-mate in seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton joked he wanted improved wet weather tyres so he could go out in the rain, a suggestion laughed off by Domenicali.

"Lewis wants to race," he said. "But it is too dark for that."

The expectation among paddock observers was that qualifying would begin at 0900 local time (1200 GMT) on Sunday when world champion and series leader Max Verstappen will start the race with a five-place grid penalty for taking a new engine, his sixth of the season.

Verstappen was penalised earlier on Saturday for an infringement of the Virtual Safety Car rules which cost him seconds and dropped him from third to fourth in the sprint race behind the triumphant McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri with Charles Leclerc promoted to third for Ferrari.

This result permitted Norris to trim the Dutchman's lead in the title race by three points to 44 with four Grands Prix and one sprint race remaining this year.

'Not safe' - Brazilian GP qualifying postponed to Sunday due to heavy rain

Brazil on Friday signed a 170 billion reais ($29.85 billion) compensation agreement with miners BHP, opens a new tab, Vale, new tab and Samarco for the Mariana dam collapse in 2015, one of the country's worst environmental disasters.

The collapse of the dam at the iron ore mine owned by Samarco, a joint venture between Vale and BHP, near the city of Mariana in southeastern Brazil, unleashed a wave of tailings in a disaster that killed 19 people, left hundreds homeless, flooded forests and polluted the length of the Doce River.

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva attended a ceremony in Brasilia to mark the signing of the agreement, with the government saying the first instalment of five billion reais must be paid within 30 days.

The agreement provides for the payment of 132 billion reais, of which 100 billion reais represent "new resources" that must be paid to the public authorities within 20 years by the companies involved in the tragedy.

They will allocate the other 32 billion reais to pay for compensation for affected people and reparation actions that will remain under their responsibility, in addition to the 38 billion reais that the miners say they have disbursed.

The government's solicitor general, Jorge Messias, said the resources provided in the agreement will allow local authorities to repair the financial losses of families hit by the tragedy and pay for environmental recovery actions in affected areas in the states of Minas Gerais, where the dam is located, and Espirito Santo through which the Doce River flows to the sea.

The annual payments will be scheduled until 2043, with values varying between 7 billion reais in 2026 and 4.41 billion reais in the last instalment.

"These resources will allow us to provide justice in reparation to the families directly affected and their impact will be felt over several areas, not only in the recovery of the environment, but in the resumption of economic activities, health and infrastructure," Messias said.

BHP in a statement said it expected outflows under the agreement to align with its full-year 2024 Samarco provision of $6.5 billion and no update was required to the existing provision at this time.

Friday's agreement could end more than a hundred lawsuits against the mining companies in the South American country and possibly limit legal action abroad, three sources close to the matter said this week.

BHP is contesting liability in a lawsuit worth up to 36 billion pounds ($47 billion) in London's High Court over its responsibility for the Mariana disaster. The world's biggest miner by market value says the London lawsuit duplicates legal proceedings and reparation and repair programmes in Brazil and should be thrown out.

Musk bows to Brazil’s Supreme Court! X set to return after months-long showdown over hate speech

Brazil’s Supreme Court has given social media platform X the green light to resume operations in the country, following compliance with court rulings that owner Elon Musk had previously resisted.

Brazil Lifts Ban on X, Allowing Social Media Platform To Resume Operations

Brazil has lifted its ban on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) after the company complied with legal requirements and paid a fine of $5 million. The ban was imposed due to the platform's failure to comply with Brazilian regulations, particularly concerning the spread of misinformation and harmful content. Following intense negotiations, X agreed to address the legal concerns, including implementing stronger content moderation policies and complying with local laws on data protection and online conduct. The payment of the fine and these adjustments enabled the platform to resume operations in Brazil.

Elon Musk-owned social media platform X has filed a fresh request to resume services in Brazil after paying some pending fines that had been imposed by the country's Supreme Court, a document seen by Reuters on Friday showed.

X has been suspended since late August in Brazil, one of its largest and most coveted markets, after not complying with court orders related to hate speech moderation and failing to name a legal representative in the country, as required by law.

After reversing course and deciding to obey the orders in recent weeks, including blocking some accounts under investigation, the company initially asked the court on September 26 to allow it to resume service in Brazil.

But top court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled at the time the platform still needed to pay just over $5 million in pending fines before the suspension was lifted.

Elon Musk's social media platform X will file documents requested by Brazil's Supreme Court and request by this Monday that the service be restored in the country, two people familiar with the situation said.

Brazil had blocked access to the platform formerly known as Twitter since the end of August following an order by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The judge and the US technology firm have been at loggerheads over his investigation of "digital militias" he has accused of spreading hate messages in Brazil.

The dispute led X to close its offices in the country and let go of employees, including its legal agent, in breach of domestic law.

According to sources familiar with X's plans, the platform could be opened up to Brazilians as soon as next week after the company provides documents requested by the court proving it now has a legal representative in the country.

X and the Brazilian Supreme Court did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In what appears to be a compromise last week, X lawyers announced that the company has named its legal representative in Brazil, as the Supreme Court had ordered, but the company did not initially provide documents that would prove the appointee was formally able to respond on behalf of the company. Sources say the firm expects the new set of documents sent to solve the issue.

The sources said X also started to comply with all the other demands of the court - blocking profiles of people allegedly spreading fake news and paying an 18 million reais ($3 million) fine via accounts of Musk's Starlink.

The social media firm is keen to smooth over the relationship with Moraes and operate like any other tech company in the country, said one of the sources.

A Brazilian public figure, with over 13 million followers on Instagram, has come under fire for dancing during live TV coverage of a fatal bus crash that resulted in the death of three football athletes.

Last weekend, a deadly bus crash in Pirai, Rio de Janeiro, claimed the lives of athletes from the Coritiba Crocodiles, a Brazilian American football team. However, as journalist Isabela Campos was reporting from the scene live, MC Livinho disrupted the coverage and started dancing behind her.

A Brazilian was so upset at his daughter dating a guy that he threatened him physically, running after him on the streets. The 39-year-old man can be seen arguing with the teenage boy at the cell phone store where the latter works in Vianópolis.

Surveillance footage shows the man following the young boy around a showcase. The boy looks frightened and tries to move away from him. But the man then pushes the showcase into the boy who runs away.

The man continues to pursue the boy and goes out of the store after him. The boy crosses onto the other side of the street, and the man follows him. He chases after him for several blocks and at one point takes out a gun and fires into the air.

The man then ran away and was ordered by the Goias Military Police order to pull over. However, he did not stop and was eventually arrested 49 miles away in Anapólis on Tuesday afternoon.

The police searched his vehicle and the man gave them an air gun which he claimed to have bought after the shooting incident. The cops soon found a .22 calibre revolver in his car. It was the same gun he had used while chasing the boy.

The police took him to the Goias Civil Police station. He was questioned about firing the gun in the air and chasing the boy. He said he came to know that they had been talking after he saw his conversations on his daughter's cell phone.

This is not the first time that such an incident has happened in Brazil. A man named Cleber Pires killed a 19-year-old in Goiânia as he did not want his 14-year-old daughter to date him.

He told the police that he attacked the victim in an act of self-defence as he came at him with a knife. Reportedly, he had called his daughter's boyfriend to his home on the pretext of having a conversation.

Elon Musk's recent decision to comply with Brazil's Supreme Court marks a significant shift in his approach to governance and free speech. After months of defiance, during which Musk's platform X faced a nationwide ban, he finally agreed to suspend accounts linked to extremist groups and appoint a local government Liaison.

Tracking the Standoff Between Musk & Brazilian Regulators

Elon Musk's social media platform X has now complied with the Brazil court's demands and will resume its operations in the country.

The Brazilian Supreme Court banned platform X in August due to its failure to adhere to court orders related to hate speech moderation.

However, now, the platform has signalled a change in its stance, indicating its compliance to address the court's concerns.

Earlier on Saturday, the Brazilian court asked Elon Musk's social media platform to present documents validating its new legal representative.

As X complied with the Brazilian court's demands, it has renamed Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao as its legal representative in Brazil. This is a crucial requirement for foreign companies operating in the country.

Brazil has a law, which requires foreign companies to have a legal representative to operate in the country officially. The representative would assume the legal responsibilities for the firm locally.

Moreover, the company has also agreed to pay fines amounting to over USD 3 million and has begun blocking specific accounts identified in a hate speech and misinformation investigation.

Brazilians are calling for urgent measures to address climate change, as President Lula Da Silva emphasizes the need for stronger actions. Amid rising environmental concerns, citizens and leaders alike are pushing for comprehensive policies to combat the climate crisis and protect the Amazon rainforest. Lula’s administration is under pressure to implement effective strategies that prioritize sustainability and environmental preservation.

Brazilians Urge Steps To Tackle Climate Change, Lula Da Silva Calls For Stronger Actions

In Brazil, protesters marched through the city of Sao Paulo, calling for measures to tackle climate change as they criticized the farming industry in the country. This comes at a time when a wave of wildfires has ravaged the South American nation amid severe droughts and high temperatures.

Brazil said it will cut the overall amount of its spending freeze to 13.3 billion reais ($2.4 billion) this year to meet its fiscal goal as investors become increasingly worried over public expenditures.

Brazil's primary deficit, excluding interest payments, is now at 28.3 billion reais ($5.1 billion), within the country's fiscal rules. According to numbers announced by the Planning Ministry, the economic team remains close to its tolerance range of 28.8 billion reais.

The ministry said in a note to the report that the government will block an additional 2.1 billion reais at the same time as it unfreezes 3.8 reais. Estimates of extraordinary revenues fell.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's administration had tried to close its budget by 2024. It appears now that the year in deficit within tolerance will be ended after two freezes on the budget, including an initial 15 billion reais in July.

Investors also seem hard to believe that Finance Minister Fernando Haddad is trying to strengthen public accounts, with the left-wing Lula continuing to demand more spending.

“Our numbers are good ones, that’s the truth,” Haddad said to reporters after the event Friday night in Sao Paulo. “People expected a budget out of control, and that’s not what’s happening.”

More cause for investor alarm, the government announced extraordinary credits to help combat wildfires across the country early this week. That spending will circumvent fiscal rules because it won't count in the calculation of the primary deficit, but it is still part of Brazil's total net debt, which stands at some 62 per cent of GDP.

Brazil's markets made a brisk gain on Thursday as the central bank decisively voted to raise interest rates - and a statement that many would call hawkish signalled a commitment to getting inflation back on track, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The real trimmed gains after surging as high as 1.2 per cent against the dollar, and swap rates rose after central bank officials raised the benchmark rate by 25 basis points late Wednesday, just hours after the US Federal Reserve delivered its first cut in four years. Though widely expected from economists and investors, the tone of the accompanying statement pushed traders to price a faster pace in the next meetings.

Brazilian real is performing according to higher carry, with the rather hawkish message from the BCB, benefiting from the lower rates in the US,” said Marco Oviedo, senior Latin America strategist at XP Investimentos.

Meanwhile, Brazil's benchmark index had given up some of its earlier session gains, as global appetite for risk continued to rise after the Fed's easing. Raphael Figueredo, CEO and analyst at Eleven Financial, said investors are “recalibrating their positions because they understand that there is more room for Selic rate to rise due to the tougher tone in the statement.” Short-end swap rates soared by over 20 basis points.

Board members noted in the statement that the risks are skewed to the upside of their inflation outlook, and the scenario requires a more restrictive monetary policy. In focusing on the strength of the Brazilian economy and unanchored inflation expectations, analysts said markets should price in 50 basis point raises at next meetings.

Higher rates at home should lift the currency, as a bigger rate gap with the US makes it more appealing to carry traders.

Annual inflation eased from the top of the tolerance range to 4.24 per cent in August, said the National Statistics Institute — a retreat that did little to ease the squeeze on central bankers to raise rates.

The hawkish rate hike by Brazil puts Latin America's biggest economy at odds with virtually every other central bank in the region, which are lowering rates to shore up fragile economies. Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Colombia have all cut their borrowing costs in recent weeks.

“The BCB is likely to be the hawkish central bank over the next three months in the region, while valuations are attractive and positioning light, whereas the MXN remains vulnerable to domestic policy risks, especially if risks of constitutional reforms resurface over the coming weeks, but also to US election risks,” Alexandre de Azara, economist at UBS BB Investment Bank, wrote in a note.

Real Madrid boss Carlos Ancelotti has defended under fire Vinicius Jr after the winger failed to inspire Brazil to win in their World Cup qualifiers during the international break. Brazil have won only one of their last four international matches with much of the criticism falling in the favour of Real Madrid star Vinicius. However, Ancelotti has defended his player ahead of the weekend’s fixture in La Liga against Real Sociedad.

Ancelotti backs Vinicius

“No one should forget that Vinicius helped us win two Champions Leagues. Brazil's problem is not an individual problem, it's more a general problem, a team problem. It's not that Brazil play bad because Vinicius doesn't show his usual Real Madrid level!,” Ancelotti said in the build-up to the weekend’s clash.

Brazil were beaten 1-0 by Paraguay in the latest 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier meaning they lie fifth in the standings with 10 points in eight matches. While there is still a long way to go in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers with Brazil hoping to seal their traditional automatic qualification spot, concerns have been raised about the lack of killer instinct in the squad with Vinicius being the focal point.

However, according to the Real manager the Brazilian has already offered on the grand stage helping deliver two Champions League titles, scoring in both the 2022 and 2024 finals.

For now, Vinicius and Co will move their attention to club football after the international break with Real squaring off against Real Sociedad on Saturday evening. With Barcelona winning all four matches in La Liga, Los Blancos will look to maintain momentum in the league having already drawn twice and dropped four points in the season. They are four points behind leaders Barcelona in the standings and will also take guard in the revamped Champions League. Real will host German giants Stuttgart on Tuesday in their first Champions League contest of the season.

Brazil's ban on Elon Musk-owned social media platform X poses a cautionary message for other democracies trying to balance freedom of expression amid their upcoming election process.

Brazil-based experts have highlighted that the ban could become a problem as it hosts both legal and illegal speech.

Last month, Brazil banned X after the country's Supreme Court blocked the social network because Musk refused to comply with the top court's orders to suspend certain accounts. Alexandre de Moraes, a Brazilian Supreme Court justice, ordered the country's telecom agency to block access to X.

“Even if we look at international standards of freedom of expression, blocking an entire platform is seen as a drastic measure,” said Veridiana Alimonti, a Brazil-based expert with the Electronic Frontier Foundation told Bloomberg. “It’s problematic when it involves platforms that host both legal and illegal speech.”

The judiciary in the countries, including in Brazil, has the power to demand the removal of specific posts and accounts from social media platforms. However, exercising that power comes with its setbacks, especially the danger that a total ban on X will fuel accusations of censorship and further fracture the global internet.

Although governments worldwide are dealing with similar battles against fake news and hateful content on X, Europe and the United States are unlikely to do what Brazil did, as per officials, academics, and industry experts, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Brazil's ban on X 'problematic' as it involves platforms hosting both legal, illegal speech: Expert

In the Brazilian capital, a massive wildfire has destroyed about 20 per cent of a forest, cloaking the city in a cloud of grey-white smoke. The blaze, as per officials, was believed to have been started by arsonists.

Conservation area

As per Reuters, the National Forest of Brasília is a conservation area that stretches to over 5,600 hectares of woodland home to springs that are the source of over 70 per cent of the city's freshwater.

"We have put out three of the four blazes, and we hope to have the fire under control by the end of the day," said Fabio dos Santos Miranda.

Miranda, who manages the forest in an interview, added that they were "sure this was an environmental crime, but we haven't confirmed if it was intentional or not."

He added that three suspected arsonists were seen in the area where the fire started.

Nearby orchards under threat

Orchards adjoining the area are under threat from the blaze and firefighters are struggling to contain it and stop it from spreading to orchards where farmers grow tomatoes and flowers.

"We are working to protect the orchards," said fireman Major Godoy. However, he said that "the wind is blowing the fire towards them and the sparks fly a long way."

Brazil, wildfires and August

According to the data from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), satellites in August detected over 38,000 fires — 38,266 to be exact. This is more than double compared to the fires in the Amazon rainforest in 2023, and the highest — by about 38 per cent, for this month in over a decade — since 2010.

This 14-year high, as per a Reuters report, comes after fire hotspots in August surged to a two-decade high and as Brazil battles the second straight year of extreme drought.

As per the report in the naturally wet, moist biome, fires usually start due to cattle ranching as people convert the jungle into pastures. Dry conditions and warm air aid the spread of these fires, which burn more intensely and for longer.

In August, thousands of fires were driven by a combination of weather, climate change and human action, said Helga Correa, a conservation specialist at WWF-Brasil, in an initial assessment.

Brazil: Wildfire burns 20 per cent of forest, arson suspected

Brazil's government is eyeing corporate revenues to meet its fiscal goals. The finance ministry has announced plans to implement new taxes on big tech companies and a global minimum tax of 15% on multinational corporations. These measures are expected to generate revenues, especially if there is a shortfall in the 2025 budget.

The Supreme Court of Brazil has ruled for an "immediate and complete suspension" of Elon Musk-owned Twitter, now rebranded as X, after the latter failed to name a legal representative in the South American country this week. The move has mobilised the crypto community, with much of the community reliant on X for crypto market news and seeing the government's shutdown as only underscoring the need for bitcoin and decentralised, censorship-resistant technology.

Municipal elections are due in Brazil this October, and the country of over 170 million requires tech platforms to designate legal representatives for receiving government takedown notices. According to the Brazilian government, X had not taken the necessary measures to follow that requirement amid an uptick in hate speech and disinformation on the platform.

Earlier this month, however, X announced that the company's so-called legal representative in Brazil was "threatened" with arrest and got multiple frozen bank accounts. It claimed it had of its own accord stopped operations in the country to protect staff.

The day the Brazilian ban took hold, on August 29, Musk lashed out at the judge who'd imposed it. Musk first pinned a tweet calling Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes "an evil dictator cosplaying as a judge." He also tweeted an apparent public service message urging users to download virtual private networks in order to evade the ban.

G1 Globo, a Brazilian media, reported that the Supreme Court promised to inflict a fine of 50,000 Brazilian real per day against any users that try to bypass the ban using X over VPN.

It is not the first ban on technology platforms in the country. Previously, WhatsApp, also belonging to Facebook's parent company Meta, was banned because of "total disrespect for Brazilian laws."

The crypto community has rallied around Musk since the ban went into effect.

Crypto community stunned as Brazil imposes ban on X

Brazil's central bank announced it would offer up to $1.5 billion in an auction on Friday, following weeks of turbulence in the country's currency. The announcement, made on Thursday night, came after the real experienced its fourth consecutive day of losses, making it one of the worst-performing currencies in emerging markets this year. The auction will occur on Friday morning on the spot market.

Alongside concerns about President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's fiscal policies and future interest rate trends, the real has also been impacted — alongside Mexico's peso — by the unwinding of carry trades amid a rally in the Japanese yen. The region's high double-digit interest rates previously made it a popular target for this strategy, which involves borrowing in the currency of a low-yielding nation to invest in higher-yielding ones.

According to the central bank, this form of intervention last occurred in December 2021. The prices for the auction will be determined based on the PTAX rate, the official currency fixing rate.

In April, the bank used swaps—a more typical intervention tactic—offering $1 billion in the market. Last month, traders speculated about a potential market intervention when the real fell past 5.7 per dollar, a rare move by the central bank in recent years.

The real has dropped nearly 14 per cent this year, marking it as the worst-performing major currency after the Mexican peso. It has dropped by 2.5 per cent this week alone, trailing only the peso in losses during this period.
