A woman in Brazil has been arrested after she fed an arsenic-laced Christmas cake to her family, poisoning many relatives.
Police said that three women died and three other relatives fell ill after eating the cake during a family get-together on December 23 in the town of Torres.
<h2>Who is the accused woman?</h2>
Though the identity of the accused woman has not yet been revealed, Brazilian media reported that she was the daughter-in-law of the woman who prepared the cake.
Expert analyses found high levels of arsenic, a naturally occurring and extremely toxic element, in the victims' blood, the remaining slices of cake, and the flour used to bake it.

Forensic police director of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, Marguet Mittman, said on Monday that very high concentrations of arsenic were found in the three victims who died.
"To give an idea, 35 micrograms are enough to cause the death of a person. In one of the victims there was a concentration 350 times higher," Mittman said.
<h2>'Cake had a spicy and unpleasant flavour'</h2>
Addressing a press conference, the police official in charge of the investigation, Marcos Veloso said that there was strong evidence incriminating the accused woman who was arrested.
Veloso said the family members had noticed a "spicy" and "unpleasant" flavour in the cake. The woman who baked the cake asked them to stop eating it, but it was too late.
As for the motive behind poisoning the cake, the police official pointed out that the family had a "very harmonious" relationship but with long-standing differences that could explain the origin of the crime.

They were labouring for long hours, in excess of what is allowed by Brazilian law, sometimes for seven days a week straight, while being kept in what authorities described as degrading conditions in their accommodations, among other labour violations.
BYD did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The labour authorities did not disclose the names of the firms involved in hiring the workers.

Brasília, Brazil
A bridge connecting two states in Brazil's northern and northeastern regions collapsed on Sunday as vehicles were crossing, killing at least one person and spilling sulfuric acid into the Tocantins River.
The National Department of Transport Infrastructure said the central span of the 533-metre (0.3-mile) bridge, linking the cities of Estreito in Maranhao state and Aguiarnopolis in Tocantins state, gave away in the afternoon. A tanker truck carrying the acid plunged into the water, officials said.
According to the fire department, one person has been confirmed dead and another was rescued alive.
Aguiarnopolis city councilman Elias Junior was recording a video asking authorities to fix problems with the bridge, which he said could no longer handle the heavy trucks passing over it. As he pointed to a large crack on the shoulder of the bridge, the structure collapsed in front of him, causing him to run backwards. Reuters could not immediately independently verify the video. Junior did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Preliminary estimates indicate at least 11 people were involved in the accident with two trucks, a car, and a motorcycle falling into the river, which is more than 50 metres (164 feet) deep. By early evening, rescue divers halted their efforts after identifying that one submerged tanker was leaking sulfuric acid, said the fire department from Tocantins.
The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge, inaugurated in 1960, was built with reinforced concrete and is part of the BR-226 highway, connecting the federal capital, Brasilia, to Belem, a northern city set to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference next year.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is scheduled to undergo an additional medical procedure on Thursday (Dec 12) to complement the surgery he underwent earlier this week to "minimize the risk of future bleeding".

The president's doctor Roberto Kalil on Wednesday said that the new operation was an "expected" follow-up to the surgery that was carried out on Tuesday (Dec 10).

He said that the procedure, which is estimated to last for about an hour, is "relatively simple and low-risk" and would involve inserting a catheter in Lula's femoral artery.

The Hospital Sirio-Libanes said in a medical bulletin, "As part of his treatment, complementary to the surgery, an endovascular procedure (embolization of the middle meningeal artery) will be carried out tomorrow morning."

It said that otherwise, Lula was keeping well.

On Wednesday, it said, he "carried out physiotherapy, walked and received family visits" and that Lula was alert and had "progressed well" since the surgery, "without incident".

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva underwent emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage on Tuesday caused by a recent fall.&nbsp;

"The operation went without complications" on Monday (Dec 9) night, and Lula was "doing well, under monitoring" in an intensive care unit, the hospital had released a statement saying.

Lula's brain haemorrhage was linked to a fall he suffered on October 19 at the presidential residence in Brasilia. He had hit his head in the bathroom and received several stitches for the injury.&nbsp;

He was admitted to the hospital's branch in Brasilia on Monday "to undergo an imaging exam after experiencing a headache", said the hospital.

Intracranial haemorrhage was reportedly detected during the examination.

He was then "transferred to the Sao Paulo unit of the Syrian-Lebanese hospital, where he underwent a craniotomy to drain the hematoma."

Lula was advised by the doctors to cancel his trip to Russia for the BRICS summit after the fall he had in the bathroom, so he joined the meeting online via video conferencing.

He also skipped the United Nations COP29 climate summit in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

Lula had described his October 19 accident as "serious" during a phone call with a Workers' Party official, which was later shared on social media.

"I am fine, I had an accident, but it was my fault. It was serious but it did not affect any sensitive area," the Brazilian president said in the call.

"I'm taking care of myself... The doctors said I had to wait at least three or four days to find out how much damage the blow had done," Lula said.
