Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79, has successfully undergone a follow-up surgery to reduce the risk of further bleeding after emergency cranial surgery earlier this week, his doctor confirmed on Thursday (Dec 12).

"The operation was a success," said Dr Roberto Kalil, speaking outside the Sirio-Libanes Hospital in São Paulo. "The president is awake and speaking," he reassured the public.

Follow-up surgery to minimise bleeding risk

As reported by news agency AFP, the procedure on Thursday (Dec 12), described as "relatively simple," was aimed at minimising the risk of additional bleeding after Lula’s emergency surgery on Tuesday. Doctors inserted a catheter into his femoral artery to block blood flow to the area of his head that had undergone surgery.

This follow-up surgery came after Lula complained of a severe headache on Monday while in Brasília. An MRI revealed a haemorrhage between his brain and the protective dura mater membrane. He was quickly transferred to São Paulo’s Sirio-Libanes Hospital, where doctors performed a trepanation to relieve pressure on his brain caused by the bleeding.

"The surgery to relieve the pressure was necessary," explained Dr Kalil. "Today’s procedure is to prevent further bleeding."

Health crisis linked to October fall

The medical emergency followed after Lula fell on October 19 at the presidential residence. He had described the fall as "serious" and cancelled overseas trips in the weeks that followed. Despite this, Lula resumed his active schedule by mid-November, hosting the G20 summit in Rio and attending the Mercosur summit in Uruguay.

Doctors have reassured the public that Lula has not suffered any brain damage. They confirmed that he is expected to be discharged from the hospital next week, once his recovery progresses as planned.

Ongoing recovery and monitoring

The latest medical bulletin confirmed that the follow-up surgery successfully interrupted blood flow to the middle meningeal artery in Lula's head, a crucial step in his recovery.

Dr Kalil expressed optimism, saying, "We are monitoring him closely, and we are confident that he will continue to improve."

Brazilian President Lula's health stable following second operation after emergency brain surgery

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva underwent emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage at the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital in Sao Paulo caused by a recent fall.

"The operation went without complications" on Monday (Dec 9) night, and Lula was "doing well, under monitoring" in an intensive care unit, the hospital released a statement saying.

Lula's brain haemorrhage was linked to a fall he suffered on October 19 at the presidential residence in Brasilia. He had hit his head in the bathroom and received several stitches for the injury.

He was admitted to the hospital's branch in Brasilia on Monday "to undergo an imaging exam after experiencing a headache", said the hospital.

Intracranial haemorrhage was reportedly detected during the examination.

He was then "transferred to the Sao Paulo unit of the Syrian-Lebanese hospital, where he underwent a craniotomy to drain the hematoma."

Lula was advised by the doctors to cancel his trip to Russia for the BRICS summit after the fall he had in the bathroom, so he joined the meeting online via video conferencing.

He also skipped the United Nations COP29 climate summit in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

Lula had described his October 19 accident as "serious" during a phone call with a Workers' Party official, which was later shared on social media.

"I am fine, I had an accident, but it was my fault. It was serious but it did not affect any sensitive area," the Brazilian president said in the call.

"I'm taking care of myself... The doctors said I had to wait at least three or four days to find out how much damage the blow had done," Lula said.

Brazilian President Lula undergoes surgery for brain haemorrhage

An unsuccessful attempt to allay persistent fears over Brazil's debt trajectory by the government's economic team members sent the country's assets plunging.

Among 23 developing market currencies, the Brazilian real led the pack of declining currencies, plunging as much as 1.4 per cent against the dollar. While comparable contracts in Chile and Mexico fell, in Brazil, those with maturities in January 2029 saw a spike of over 40 basis points in swap rates.

Guilherme Mello, Brazil's economic policy secretary, reaffirmed the government's budgetary strategy during a conference call with investors. According to a Bloomberg report quoting sources, the actions implemented by the government of Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva are strong enough to support the country's alleged budgetary framework.

The slump comes after Lula ignored aides last week and sparked a market rout that threatens the economy. The real hit an all-time low last week after the government's spending-cut package underwhelmed traders and is down 20 per cent this year.

The dangers were crystal clear. President Lula's top economic aides pointed them out to him again and again. Any moves to water down the fiscal austerity plan in the works will spark a selloff — another selloff — across Brazilian financial markets.

And yet, Lula decided he did not care. To dilute the plan's much-needed savings, he instructed his aides to include a number of tax relief measures for the poor in the package that was announced late last week. Just as predicted, markets crashed instantly, erasing 2.4 per cent of a stock market that had been declining for months. For now, investors remain cautious and predict the selloff will continue.

Protests Erupt Against Brazil Military Police After Alleged Violent Videos Surface

Former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro appears to be searching for a silver lining for himself in Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 United States presidential elections. Facing serious allegations of plotting a coup in the South American nation following the 2022 election loss, Bolsonaro is now hoping to stage a political comeback.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday (Nov 28) that Bolsonaro is hoping for Trump to threaten Brazil with sanctions if courts bar him from running for the top office until 2030 for attacking the country’s voting system.

“Trump is back, and it’s a sign we’ll be back, too,” the US newspaper quoted Bolsonaro as saying.

The alleged 2022 coup plot

Bolsonaro’s statement comes just days after Brazil police released a damning report linking the former president to an alleged design to overturn the 2022 election that he lost to his left-wing rival and incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The report claimed that Bolsonaro “planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organisation aiming to launch a coup d’etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law.”

Bolsonaro on the other hand alleges political witch-hunting and denies any wrongdoing.

Brazilian police on Thursday called for the indictment of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro over a 2022 "coup" plot to prevent current leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking office.

Brazilian police on Thursday called for the indictment of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro over a 2022 "coup" plot to prevent current leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking office. A police statement said its investigators concluded that Bolsonaro and 36 others planned the "violent overthrow of the democratic state." "Federal police concluded on Thursday the investigation into the existence of a criminal organization that acted in a coordinated way in 2002 in an attempt to maintain the then-president in power," the statement said. "The final report has been sent to the Supreme Court with the request that 37 individuals be indicted for the crimes of the violent overthrow of the democratic state, coup d'etat and criminal organization," it said. It is up to Brazil's attorney general to decide whether the allegations are substantiated enough to warrant criminal charges being laid. The charge of attempting a coup carries a sentence of up to 12 years in prison. Also read | Netanyahu calls ICC arrest warrant 'antisemitic,' warns of 'severe consequences' Bolsonaro vowed to fight the allegation and accused the Supreme Court judge overseeing the case of overstepping the law. "The fight begins at the Attorney General's office," Bolsonaro said on his X social media account. The judge, Alexandre de Moraes, "leads the entire investigation, adjusts statements, arrests without charges, fishes for evidence and has a very creative advisory team. He does everything that the law does not say," Bolsonaro said. According to police, the alleged plot was hatched in the final months of Bolsonaro's 2019-2022 presidency. Lula, a left-winger who was previously president between 2003 and 2010, won the October 2022 elections to succeed the far-right Bolsonaro. Police have not so far drawn a direct link between the alleged plot and an insurrection that took place in Brasilia on January 8, 2023, when thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed the capital's presidential palace, the Congress building and the Supreme Court. Investigations continue into that upheaval, which echoed scenes from the United States two years earlier, when supporters of Donald Trump protesting President Joe Biden's election win attacked the US Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021. Bolsonaro has expressed admiration for Trump in the past. The list of alleged co-conspirators in the Bolsonaro case included three elite soldiers and a police officer arrested on Tuesday for allegedly plotting to assassinate Lula and Moraes, in a separately announced case. "I must be very grateful that I am alive. The attempt to poison me and Alckmin didn't work," said Lula on Thursday at an official ceremony, referring to Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. Also read | US ‘fundamentally rejects’ ICC’s arrest warrant for Netanyahu, says court has no credibility "We need to build this country without persecution, incitement to hatred or discord," the president added. Trump parallels Bolsonaro is the target of several investigations, but the one on Thursday placing him at the centre of an alleged coup is the most dramatic. He says he is innocent and the victim of "persecution." A former army captain, Bolsonaro has already been declared ineligible to hold public office until 2030 for having made unsubstantiated claims of fraud in Brazil's electronic voting system. He has been prohibited from leaving the country while a vast probe named "Tempus Veritatis" ("the time of truth" in Latin) continues. The investigation has already swept up several of Bolsonaro's closest aides. Bolsonaro hopes to overturn the ineligibility ruling and attempt a comeback in the 2026 presidential elections. On X, he has posted parallels between his situation and that of Trump, who won over US voters this month to secure a return to the White House. The police investigation calling for Bolsonaro's indictment detailed an alleged decree the ex-president was said to have issued in December 2022 ordering high-ranking military officers to arrest Moraes. Moraes was head of the national electoral tribunal that validated Lula's victory in 2022. Also read | Who is Pam Bondi, Trump's next attorney general? That decree was confirmed by the military officers in police questioning, according to transcripts made public by Moraes, who is now in charge of the case at the Supreme Court. According to a transcript released in March, a retired Brazilian army general, Marco Antonio Freire Gomes, had spoken to police investigators about the December 2022 meetings with Bolsonaro. He said a Bolsonaro aide had seen legal opinions the then-president had drawn up supporting his attempt to stay in power. Brazil Arrests Five in President Lula Assassination Plot

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday met with the Presidents of Brazil, Chile, and Argentina in Rio de Janeiro and discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in various areas such as defence, energy, biofuels, and agriculture.

Modi, who arrived in Brazil on Sunday after concluding a two-day trip to Nigeria, held talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the G20 Summit and complimented him on various efforts of Brazil during their G20 Presidency.

"We took stock of the full range of bilateral ties between our nations and reaffirmed our commitment to improving cooperation in sectors like energy, biofuels, defence, agriculture and more," Modi said in a post on X after talks with Lula.

The two leaders had a "productive meeting" during which they reviewed the complete spectrum of bilateral ties and agreed to advance cooperation in sectors such as defence, agriculture, biofuels, digital technology and more, the prime minister's office said.

While opening the bilateral meeting, President Lula told Prime Minister Modi that a lot of things that they have tried to do in their G20 have been inspired by the G20 Summit in India, the sources said.

He added that Brazil wanted to reach the level of efficiency in organizing the Summit that India had shown last year.

Brazil is hosting the 19th G20 Summit. India is part of the G20 Troika along with Brazil and South Africa.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Prime Minister Modi thanked President Lula for successfully hosting the G20 Summit.

"PM assured India's full support to Brazil's initiative of ‘Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty’. Discussions focused on exploring opportunities for greater cooperation in renewable energy, biofuels, defence, agriculture, healthcare, and digital technology," he said in a post on X.

On Monday, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by President Lula at the G20 Summit venue.

Alongside Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Joe Biden are among the leaders attending the Rio de Janeiro summit on November 18-19.

On Tuesday, Modi also met with Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font on the margins of the G20 Summit.

"India's ties with Chile are getting stronger across various sectors. Our talks focused on how to deepen relations in pharmaceuticals, technology, space, and more. It is gladdening to see Ayurveda gaining popularity in Chile. This is also a sector where ties can gain momentum," Modi posted on X.

On his part, President Boric said that they discussed the negotiations of the Trade Agreement between both countries (CEPA) and the new opportunities for public-private investment and trade promotion.

"We also discussed how to increase academic exchange, as well as increasing collaboration on cultural matters. India is one of the largest economies in the world, with great demographic and future potential, with whom we are working to strengthen ties, which we will deepen during our next official visit to that country next year," he said in a post on X. PM Modi meets with leaders of Brazil, Chile and Argentina at G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro

The G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro ended on Monday (Nov 18) with leaders failing to resolve key deadlocks in UN climate negotiations, as geopolitical tensions, particularly the war in Ukraine and Donald Trump's return to the US presidency, overshadowed discussions.

Climate commitments falter

Ahead of the summit, the UN had called on G20 nations to rescue stalled climate talks in Azerbaijan by pledging greater financial support to developing countries grappling with the devastating effects of global warming. However, there were no concrete commitments, as G20 members remained divided on who should pay.

The summit's final communiqué vaguely stated that the required funding would come "from all sources" without specifying contributions.

Criticism follows

Mick Sheldrick of Global Citizen criticised the leaders' inaction, noting, "The leaders are kicking the can back to Baku".

"This is probably going to make it harder to achieve an agreement," he told AFP.

Ukraine war escalation

The war in Ukraine dominated discussions, as the US' recent controversial policy shift authorising Kyiv to use long-range missiles on Russian territory, risks escalating the conflict. Russia has already warned of an "appropriate response" if its territory is targeted.

The impending return of Donald Trump — known for his isolationist "America First" policies — has cast uncertainty over global diplomacy. As US President Joe Biden attended the summit as a lame-duck leader, China's President Xi Jinping positioned himself as a stabilising force, calling for "no escalation of wars, and no fanning of flames."

Addressing the tensions in the Middle East, the G20 in a statement called for "comprehensive" ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon.

Brazil's push for social justice

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sought to steer discussions toward combating global hunger and inequality. He launched the centrepiece of his G20 presidency: a Global Alliance Against Poverty and Hunger with the support of 82 nations, and set an ambitious target to feed 500 million people by 2030.

The summit also advanced a pledge to "engage cooperatively" to ensure the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share of taxes.

A failed bomb attack on Brazil's Supreme Court is being probed as a terrorist act with possible links to last year's uprising against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Federal Police Chief André Rodríguez has said that the explosions are being investigated as an act of terrorism and a violent attack on the democratic rule of law. Watch in for more details!

Brazil SC Bomb Attack: Police Say, Explosion Being Investigated As An Act Of Terrorism

Blasts outside the Supreme Court in the capital Brasilia are being treated as a "terrorist act," Brazil's federal police director Andrei Passos Rodrigues said Thursday.

The two explosions, set off by a man who died during a failed attack late Wednesday, could have also been a violent attempt to overthrow "democratic rule of law," Rodrigues told a news conference.

"This is not an isolated act," he warned, adding that the attack was planned over a long period.

The perpetrator was identified as Francisco Wanderley Luiz, a 59-year-old member of the far-right Liberal Party (PL) of former president Jair Bolsonaro, whose supporters in January 2023 sought to violently take control of democratic institutions in Brasilia after the return to power of left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Around 7:30 pm (2230 GMT) on Wednesday, Luiz drove a bomb-laden car towards the Supreme Court, according to officials.

After fuses in the car caught fire, causing an initial blast that did not set off attached explosives, Luiz was seen exiting the vehicle and running towards the court entrance.

Seconds later, another blast occurred, killing Luiz in front of the court. His body, found to be carrying what appeared to be a detonator, lay on the ground overnight until specialist police rendered it safe to be removed early Thursday.

Authorities said Luiz had been a candidate for Bolsonaro's PL in local elections in 2020 but did not win a mandate.

Luiz had been present in Brasilia on January 8, 2023, when Bolsonaro supporters stormed the Supreme Court, the Congress, and the presidential palace in Brasilia, but it was not known if he had taken part in the insurrection, according to Rodrigues.

Rodrigues said Luiz had for several months been renting a place at a "strategic point" near the court building.

Inside, investigators found a message apparently voicing support in violent terms for the 2023 insurrection.

"We still do not know the motives of the crime," the police chief said.

While the attack was being treated as the actions of Luiz alone, he added that "the extremists are active."

Bolsonaro on Thursday denounced the attack, calling it a "sad episode."

In a social media post, he said dialogue was needed for "the defence of democracy and liberty."

Inside, investigators found a message apparently voicing support in violent terms for the 2023 insurrection. "We still do not know the motives of the crime," the police chief said. While the attack was being treated as the actions of Luiz alone, he added that "the extremists are active." Bolsonaro on Thursday denounced the attack, calling it a "sad episode." In a social media post, he said dialogue was needed for "the defence of democracy and liberty." President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was away from the capital during the incident, a spokesman confirmed, while law enforcement deployed a large contingent of officers around the plaza under heavy rain.

Brazil’s federal police have launched an investigation to determine the attacker’s motives. Sergeant Rodrigo Santos of the capital's military police said that officers on duty near the court reported seeing a vehicle in flames before spotting the man exiting just before the blasts occurred.

Eyewitness Laiana Costa, a government employee, recounted that she saw the man go by and “then there was a noise, and I looked back and there was fire and smoke coming out,” as security forces rushed to the scene.

The setting of this attack is significant, given that this plaza was the site of the January 8, 2023, riots, when supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings to protest his election loss.
