A Brazilian Supreme Court justice on Wednesday threatened to close the local operations of X, formerly known as Twitter, unless billionaire owner Elon Musk appoints a legal representative in Brazil within 24 hours.

The directive from Justice Alexandre de Moraes marks the latest escalation in an ongoing conflict with Musk's platform. A series of devastating forest fires have erupted across Brazil's Sao Paulo state plundering nearly 30 cities into complete chaos. Watch to know more.

Climate Change blames as Sao Paulo experiences worst fire season

Despite decreased Amazon deforestation under the watch of President Lula da Silva, Brazilian forests have seen a drastic rise in wildfires since the start of the year. The situation was exacerbated after drought-like conditions emerged in the rainforests. Over the past eight months, there have been more than 59,000 incidents of wildfires, the highest since 2008. This has led to the deployment of almost 1,500 firefighters to the Amazon, the government said Wednesday (Aug 21).

The Brazilian city of Porto Velho has been one of the most affected areas, where 540,000 residents are forced to breathe smoke, triggering medical concerns.

Meanwhile, the country’s Environment Minister Marina Silva has blamed human-made climate change for the worsened situation.

“We have seen a worsening of climate change. We had a period of El Niño, changes in the temperature of different regions, warming of the oceans, a series of issues that are aggravating the problems,” Silva said.

G20 finance chiefs have pushed the discussions on Brazil's global billionaires tax plan to future summits. After a contentious debate this week in Rio de Janeiro, Group of twenty finance chiefs have pledged in a draft communiqué to keep discussing the proposal for a global wealth tax.

The statement promises to keep talking about ‘dialogue on fair and progressive taxation, including on ultra-high net worth individuals.’ The 2 per cent minimum tax on billionaires is what Brazil's president has used to highlight his country's achievements this year.
Ronaldinho says he won't watch Copa America

Ronaldo is not the first Brazil World Cup-winning player to have grown disinterested in the sport. Earlier this month, Ronaldinho went on an astonishing rant where he claimed that the new crop of players did not have any love for the Brazilian jersey.

“This is a sad moment for those who love Brazilian soccer. It’s getting hard to find the spirit to watch the games. This is perhaps one of the worst teams in recent years, it has no respectable leaders, only average players for the majority," he posted on Instagram.

"I’ve been following football since I was a kid, long before I thought about becoming a player, and I’ve never seen a situation as bad as this. Lack of love for the shirt, lack of grit and the most important of all: football,” Ronaldinho added.

“I’ll repeat, our performance has been one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. Such a shame. I therefore declare my resignation. I will not watch any CONMEBOL Copa America game, nor celebrate any victory."

'Too BORING': Ronaldo says he can't 'watch football' amid Brazil's Copa America struggles

Brazil has been missing in the oil 'action' this year. The country's daily output started at 3.73 million barrels and then plummeted nearly 25 per cent due to long-scale repairs. This also helped the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, to decide on the supply numbers and the subsequent cuts. OPEC's output cuts strategy aims to stabilise prices and balance falling demand with supply curbs.

Now Brazil has risen, with more than one-third of the deficit already covered. Brazilian oil fields are expected to overshoot the pre-collapse figure by roughly 200,000 barrels a day this year. This can potentially hurt OPEC's strategy, which now has to deal with excess Oil from Brazil. Brazil's president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has pushed to strengthen ties with OPEC and its allies but has refrained from any commitments to constrain output.

OPEC had recently extended output cuts well into 2025. This comes as slow demand growth in top oil importer China continues to weigh on prices amid rising volatility. We are currently witnessing an energy shift, from oil to cleaner forms of energy. This shift is a major factor in the declining demand. Supply cuts are hurting the wallets, but keeping the prices in balance is essential. Prices have risen above $80 per barrel. Goldman Sachs anticipates oil to touch $86 this summer. But the outlook remains grim. Citi forecasts oil prices will drop to $60 by 2025.

Brazil still has challenges to counter. Petrobras and other oil drillers face environmental protests and standoff over wages. The strikes have already squeezed 80,000 barrels of daily output so far. Another issue is the fading crude production in Brazil's once 'crown jewel', Tupi. Petrobras is currently in negotiations to revive the falling output.
