Cuban Yordenis Ugas pulled off a stunning victory over 42-year-old former champion Manny Pacquiao with a unanimous decision to retain his WBA welterweight world title after an intense fight in Las Vegas on Saturday. 
 
The judges scored the fight 115-113 116-112 116-112 in favour of Ugas, who controlled the second half of the contest with his jab as the more aggressive Pacquiao struggled to land his punches on his return to the ring after a two-year absence. 
 
"Now the plan is to unify the title," Ugas, 35, said in the ring through a translator. "Everyone said he was the champion, now they know who the real champion is." 
 
Pacquiao was initially preparing to fight WBC and IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence, Jr. but a retinal tear in the American`s left eye forced him to withdraw, with Ugas agreeing to step in at less than two weeks` notice. 
 
Ugas had been elevated to WBA super champion after Pacquiao was stripped of the belt because of inactivity as he had not fought since July 2019 and the Filipino looked desperate to get it back. 
 
The clear favourite of the 17,438 fans at the T-Mobile Arena, southpaw Pacquiao came out aggressively in the early rounds with his trademark speed and combinations. 
 
Ugas`s long reach enabled him to keep the former eight-division world champion at arm`s length, however, and his jab was proving an effective, if not fight-winning, weapon. 
 
Pacquiao continued to throw almost twice as many punches as his opponent but the Cuban was more accurate with his, and there was plenty of sting in the big rights he was starting to land over the top. 
 
The crowd was reduced to a nervous silence as the fight headed into the final rounds with no sign of the knockout that Pacquiao needed to come out a winner, although spectators were roused into voice when the fighters went toe-to-toe in the 10th. 
 
Ultimately, though, Pacquiao`s ageing legs had nothing more to give and Ugas, a bronze medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, earned the decision to improve his record to 27-4. 
 
Pacquiao, the only man in boxing history to hold world titles in eight different divisions and one of the greatest boxers of all time, will announce next month if he will run for the presidency of the Philippines in the 2022 elections.

After this win, she revealed that the match was revenge for all her losses against Chin Chen in the past. "I knew I lost to this girl four times before. So, it was a challenge for me to prove to myself. I never thought about proving to others. I thought this was a golden opportunity for me to take my revenge of previous losses against her. There was no strategy while going to the ring. Whatever situation was there, I will handle it there itself. I am happy I bagged the chance to do well. I played whole-heartedly and enjoyed it," said a smiling Lovlina in a press interaction organised by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).

She went on to reveal that she learnt Muay Thai for a year before she got into boxing. "I had learnt Muay Thai for a year. There used to be one or two punches. I can't say that Muay Thai helped me in getting the medal. But it did help me a little bit. When I got into boxing, I used the one or two punches from Muay Thai in winning the national sub-junior championships."

Lovlina added that she will not settle for bronze and set her eyes on gold. I don't want to stop at bronze. I want to go for the gold. Medal is only one. That is gold. For that I have to prepare and plan for the semifinal fight."

She has also cited MC Mary Kom as her inspiration. "Mary Kom has been a big inspiration for me since I heard her name after entering boxing. She has struggled a lot and I take inspiration from her. It feels very nice and I get to learn a lot from her. Very happy that she is training with us."

After much review of a variety of alternatives that would allow us to present the Hall of Fame Weekend in the best possible way, the Hall of Fame has decided that the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021 will be enshrined together during the 2021 Hall of Fame Induction Weekend scheduled for June 10-13th in “Boxing’s Hometown.”

The Hall of Fame will officially make the announcement to the public this evening at 6:30 pm. Following the announcement, I will follow up with you more details.

We did not come to this decision lightly, however, the safety of our inductees, guests, fans, volunteers and staff is paramount. The Hall of Fame will continue to highlight the Class of 2020 with feature stories and career retrospectives via its official website and social media outlets.
