Day, 27, had been in a coma for four days following his defeat and, despite having emergency brain surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, doctors were unable to save the junior middleweight.

"He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team, including his mentor, friend and trainer Joe Higgins."

"On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury."

Day was rushed to the hospital on a stretcher after Conwell landed a flurry of punches that left him motionless on the canvas.

Before turning professional, Day was a highly decorated amateur who won two nationals titles.

He turned pro in 2013 and became a world-rated super welterweight contender, capturing the WBC Continental Americas championship in 2017 and the IBF Intercontinental championship in 2019. In June he was rated in the top-10 by both the WBC and IBF.

Day's death comes after 23-year-old Argentine super lightweight Hugo Santillan died in July from injuries suffered in the ring and 28-year-old Russian Maxim Dadashev passed away two days earlier from brain injuries during his fight.

"It becomes very difficult to explain away or justify the dangers of boxing at a time like this," DiBella said.

World Boxing Championships: Amit Panghal becomes first Indian male boxer to reach final

Asian Championships bronze medallist Nikhat Zareen has alleged that she was not allowed to participate in the trials for the World Championships to be held in October.

In a letter to Boxing Federation of India, Zareen said that she was "stopped from competing" and her name was struck off the list for trials on Tuesday without an explanation.

Launching an indirect attack at six-time world champion MC Mary Kom, Zareen called for fair trials alleging "unfair practices" to favour "a particular boxer."

It's noteworthy that MC Mary Kom and Lovlina Borgohain have been selected for the upcoming women’s world boxing championships in Russia. Mary Kom has been selected for the 51kg category whereas world and Asian bronze-medallist Borgohain will be competing in the 69kg category.

The world championships are scheduled from October 3 to 13 in Russia. Nikhat Zareen was supposed to compete with Mary Kom for the 51kg category. Moreover, Lovlina Borgohain too was exempted from trials for 69kg category.

Meanwhile, selection committee chairman Rajesh Bhandari that the decision to select Mary Kom was taken in view of India's medal prospects. He said Mary Kom is a legend and her stature can't be challenged.

" We got a representation from Mary Kom's coach and after considering it, we felt that Mary Kom had done enough to merit selection without trials. The BFI has been consulted on this matter," news agency PTI quoted Bhandari.

Rahimov's presence on that sanctions list was extremely damaging to the IOC though he has been replaced on an interim basis by Mohamed Moustahsane.

"It exposes the IOC and its commercial partners to unacceptable reputational, legal and financial risks," Lalovic said.

He said AIBA's debt meant money would not go to sports and the athletes in the future and the organisation still faced problems with refereeing.

Andy Ruiz Jr. dethroned British title-holder Anthony Joshua with a stunning seventh-round stoppage at New York's Madison Square Garden on Saturday to become the first Mexican-American world heavyweight champion.

Joshua, previously undefeated and fighting for the first time in the United States, was defending his IBF, WBA and WBO titles but was knocked down four times in the fight before the referee waved off the contest in the seventh.

Joshua said he could have fought on but had no harsh words for the referee.

"I want to fight. I am never one of those fighters to disrespect a referee like, 'he should have done this' or 'he should have done that,'” he added.

“He called it off when he thought I couldn’t fight. It’s a shame. But I don’t want anyone to drown in their sorrows."

The defeat was a setback but Joshua said he would be back.

"Boxing is a tough sport. I trained hard, I stayed dedicated. And I just got beat by a good fighter tonight," he said. "It'll be interesting to see how far he goes but good luck to him.

"I gotta bounce back. This is all part of the journey. Fighter by heart, boxer by trade."

Ruiz had not been given much chance of beating the champion given he had just five full weeks to prepare after Joshua's scheduled opponent, Jarrell Miller, tested positive performance-enhancing drugs.

Ruiz was dropped to the canvas in the third but the heavy brawler came back to down the Brit in the same round and Joshua was lucky to survive.

Joshua appeared to recover and worked his jab well over the next few rounds but Ruiz landed big body shots in the sixth to put the champion on the back foot.

Joshua went down again in a flurry of Ruiz punches with nearly two minutes left in the seventh and while the British fighter got off his knees just in time to beat the count his legs looked like jelly as he made his way to a neutral corner.

The 33-year-old Singh, a bronze medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has an unbeaten 10-0 record since he turned pro in 2015, but failed to get a single fight this year.

He has now turned to Arum's Top Rank Promotions, where he will get a chance to train with leading coaches including Robert Garcia and Freddie Roach, the long-time handler of Filipino great Manny Pacquiao.

"It's great to be associated with Top Rank. I want to take my unbeaten performance in UK and India to America as well," Singh told AFP on Friday.

"They will grant us three to five fights in a year depending upon my training and fitness. US is the place to be when it comes to pro boxing."

Singh said it was his ambition to square off with middleweight world champion Alvarez, who is taking on Britain's WBA super middleweight champ Rocky Fielding at New York's Madison Square Garden on December 15.

"If I can get Canelo at Madison Square Garden, what better than that. He is fighting in the super middleweight category with Rocky Fielding. He is a good fighter and if I do get a chance to face him for the world title then why not," said Singh.

For Singh, fighting in the US is a "dream come true" and he believes training with big names like Garcia and Roach will lift his career.

"Bob Arum introduced us to Garcia and Roach. We are still trying to figure out who will ultimately train me. But certainly they are all big names and it will be an honour to be coached by them," said Singh.

"When I met up with Floyd in Japan, we talked and he said he wants to come out of retirement to challenge me," Pacquiao said.&nbsp;

"All I know is fighting in the ring and entertaining people. That's my job. Floyd has come out of retirement and we'll see after this fight."

Mayweather scored a unanimous victory over Pacquiao in 2015's "Fight of the Century", which was largely regarded as a let-down despite being the highest-grossing fight of all time.

Since then, speculation about a possible rematch between the two welterweights has flickered, with Mayweather saying in September he was ready to fight Pacquiao.

"I'm coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao this year another 9 figure payday on the way," Mayweather wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao, who will be fighting in the United States for the first time in two years in January's bout, said Monday he remained solely focused on Broner before any return with Mayweather.

"We cannot underestimate Broner and this fight," Pacquiao said. "We will discuss anything with Floyd Mayweather after that."

Pacquiao, 39, will face Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

On Tuesday, the level of deadly particulate matter PM 2.5 that lodge deep in the lungs was at 407, about eight times the safe limit, according to a reading by the pollution control board.

Authorities have banned the entry of heavy vehicles into the city and ordered construction work to stop and sprinklers to keep down the dust. But the air quality remains in the severe zone.

Seven European&nbsp;boxers&nbsp;whom Reuters spoke to complained that the air left a bad taste and irritated their eyes.

Their coaches said they were advised about the poor air but organisers had not given them any protective gear.

Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India, said Delhi's air quality was improving as the effects of last week's Hindu festival of Diwali - when tens of thousands of firecrackers are let off, clogging the air with smoke - were wearing off.
