The struggle of Safeena Firdausi, a character played by Alia Bhatt, remains universal. Her struggle to enjoy late night parties and indulge in make-up could that be of any Lakshmi from a Hindu household or Harpreet Kaur from a Sikh family. Her love, possessiveness for Murad and temper tantrum is not shown as a result of her past or upbringing but presented as a fact of her personality. Safeena kisses but it is not eroticised. She does not come out as an exotic Muslim female out of a closet.</p>

<p>Even in the case of Murad, his quest to survive, love and struggle flow from confidence in himself and his talent. Bollywood films on Muslims, most of the times, end up creating dark-eyed stereotypes of Muslims who are either motivated by religious indoctrination or sense of victimhood and marginalisation from the political mainstream.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It leads to the creation of a Muslim as a familiar exotic in the current political narrative. A homogenous mass with a singular entity. The film shatters this narrative. Murad does not drink but it doesn’t mean he is a conservative. Booze is not used to demonstrate his creative depth. He smokes which is permissible in his religious context but does not typify him as a Muslim.</p>

<p>In this film, the victimhood is portrayed as a matter of fact and does not flow from religion. When Murad’s father Aftab Shakir, played by Vijay Raaz, tells Murad that it is very difficult to get a job as a Muslim, it comes as a statement of fact.&nbsp;<br />

The film does not have good Muslims or bad Muslims. The Muslims are similar to Hindus and Sikhs married to their vices and desire. Murad’s father is insensitive, and&nbsp;Sher’s (Siddhant Chaturvedi) father is a raging alcoholic and, in both, the common thread is poverty and life on margins. This interplay between poverty and plenty makes this film different, which is summed up brilliantly in the song, '<em>paas</em><em> </em><em>hokar</em><em> </em><em>bhee</em><em> door </em><em>hain</em>.'</p>

<p>Even the second marriage of Murad’s father is less to do with the number of marriages prescribed in Islam but more to do with lust, infidelity, patriarchy and man-woman relationship. It is not what without significance that in a scene, Murad’s mother Razia openly shouts back at Aftab he should not crib to her about her frigidness as he never knew how to touch her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scene, which could have been shot by a posh couple, shatters the myth of man-woman issues based on class.</p>

'Gully Boy' defies Muslim stereotypes in Bollywood movies

<p>She continued, “The first thing I did after Quantico was a Hindi movie. My career in both countries is dear to me, and as long as people want to watch me, I’ll stay!"</p>

<p>She was last seen in ‘Isn’t It Romantic’ with Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth. She is currently working on ‘The Sky Is Pink’ with Farhan Akhtar, Zaira Wasim and Rohit Saraf. The film is slated to release on October 11 this year. It’s based on the life of motivational speaker Aisha Choudhary.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from films, Chopra was also spotted in a music video with her big Jonas family as the Jonas brothers reunited for music. Titled ‘Sucker’, the single has the three Jonas brothers who are seen singing while their partners can be seen rooting for them.&nbsp;</p>

Post-Pulwama attack, All Indian Cine Workers Association announces ban on Pakistani artists

<p>Karisma Kapoor who was spotted on Wednesday evening unveiling a designer's new spring/summer 2019 collection at Palladium in Mumbai, spoke about remixed films and songs at the sidelines of the event.</p>

<p>When asked if she is aware of a 'Coolie No 1' remake, the actor said that while she does not have much information about it, she is excited to see it, if the film happens.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As for her take on remixed songs, a growing trend in the industry, Karisma said, "I would love to see someone remix ' Tujhe Mirchi Lagi' from my film 'Coolie No 1.' "</p>

<p>Notably, the inspiration for the actor's comments came from the saree that she was sporting from the label's latest range that draws heavily from Indian flowers and spices.</p>

<p>She was herself draped in a saree that had the 'mirchi' or chilli motif running throughout at the event.</p>

<p>The actor took to her Instagram account and posted a picture of her draped in the saree as well.</p>

You have school and college kids being intimate and marriage is not even in question and that is what they show in cinema. That kind of requirement of the character did not suit me. So I had to let go of those big offers with a heavy heart. The directors respected me and understood that I had certain restrictions which were sacred to me," she told PTI in an interview.</p>

<p>"Discussions are on. I want to do something that I have not done before like a thriller, murder mystery or suspense film. I would love to play a negative role...Due to digitalisation, work opportunities and avenues have changed so much. Directors typecasting actors is passe," she said.</p>

<p>In 2016, the actor tied the knot with radio jockey Anmol and focused on her personal life. Rao said she had hinted at the hiatus before implementing it.</p>

<p>"I was not making presence anywhere... There are some actors who surrender themselves to the industry. I have always been a family person," she added.</p>

<p>In a comment on India's #MeToo tsunami that has crossed the boundaries of the film industry since last September, the actor said influential people would try to get their way, but 'accepting it or not' will always be a choice.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is unfortunate when I hear about the #MeToo cases. There are girls and guys here who are ready to grab opportunities at any cost. People should respect themselves and their values," she said.</p>

<p>Rao said she was 'blessed' to never experience harassment. She believes it was because she became a star early on in her career despite being an outsider.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I had a wonderful entry into films without being a star kid. And you can't plan such things. My journey has been different. 'Simmba', 'Uri', 'Kedarnath', 'KGF': Bollywood gets four blockbusters in a month

<p>It is not every year that you get to see a Bollywood film&nbsp;that stays with you many years after you've watched it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Directed by Vikas Bahl, Kangana Ranaut's 'Queen' is one such&nbsp;movie that any young woman can take inspiration from and even after 5 years holds relevance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hirani has categorically denied the allegations. His lawyer Anand Desai termed the allegations "false, mischievous, scandalous, motivated and defamatory".</p>

<p>In an article on HuffPost India, the woman, who calls herself "an assistant", alleged that Hirani sexually abused her more than once between March and September 2018.</p>

<p>She detailed her allegations in an email dated November 3, 2018, to Hirani's longtime collaborator and "Sanju" co-producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra.</p>

<p>The woman said that on April 9, 2018, the director first passed a sexually suggestive remark to her and later sexually assaulted her at his home office.</p>

<p>"I remember forming these words on my lips - 'Sir, This is wrong. Because of this power structure. You being the absolute power and me being a mere assistant, a nobody - I will never be able to express myself to you'," she wrote of the April 9 incident in the email to Chopra, as quoted by the article.</p>

<p>The woman said that Hirani was a father figure for her.</p>

<p>"My mind, body and heart were grossly violated that night and for the next 6 months," the email read.</p>

<p>Chopra's wife, film critic Anupama, who is a director at Vinod Chopra Films Pvt Ltd, "Sanju" scriptwriter Abhijat Joshi and filmmaker Shelly Chopra, Vidhu Vinod's sister, were also marked on the email.</p>

<p>The complainant later said to HuffPost India that she was "intimidated by Hirani", who was her reporting person at the time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She said she maintained a facade of normalcy regarding Hirani's behaviour as she needed to hold on to her job as her father was suffering from a terminal illness.</p>

<p>"I had no choice but to be polite to him. It was unbearable but the reason I endured it all, until I couldn't, was because I didn't want my job to be taken away from me, and work to be questioned. Ever."</p>

<p>"I was worried that if I left midway, it would be impossible to find another job in this industry if he were to speak badly about my work. Because if Hirani said I wasn't good, everybody would listen. My future would be in jeopardy," she said.</p>

<p>Anupama Chopra had confirmed that the woman had shared an account with her and that Vinod Chopra Films (VCF) has since set up a committee to address complaints of sexual harassment.</p>

<p>"I have offered my full support and recommended that she take the complaint to a legal body or a neutral party since we cannot be arbitrators or judges on this. "We also offered to set up an ICC at VCF (which we have set up since then) even though a VCF ICC could not have taken up the case since she was an RHF (Rajkumar Hirani Films) employee at the time. These are two separate companies," she said in an email dated December 5, 2018.</p>

<p>Anupama said the woman told her she needed time to think about how to take things forward.</p>

<p>She added, "I did not want in any way to pressurise her or steer her in any direction. As Vinod and I told her then, she has our full support and we are fully respectful of whatever decision she has taken."</p>

<p>The development comes close on the heels of Hirani's name been dropped from the new poster and trailer of "Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga", directed by Shelly Chopra.</p>

#MeToo: Rajkumar Hirani accused of sexual assault, film-maker denies allegation

<p>Anupam Kher's mother has praised Dr. Manmohan Singh after watching 'The Accidental Prime Minister', in which Kher has stepped into the shoes of the former PM.</p>

<p>Actor Vicky Kaushal who is been seen enthusiastically promoting his highly awaited upcoming film 'Uri', has now spread the ' josh' to his Bollywood friends as well.<br />
A day before the film's release, the actor got an airplane full of stars saying out loud the powerful trending lines from the film 'Uri'.</p>

<p>As a bunch of young Bollywood stars made their way to New Delhi to meet the PM, Vicky took the opportunity to get his friends to promote his film mid-air.<br />

He shared a video on his Instagram page which had him along with other stars of the fraternity cheering for ' Uri'.&nbsp;<br />

“Guys I have something to say to you,” he says to the camera and shows the faces of all the stars behind him. “How’s the josh?” he asks the group, screaming at the top of his lungs, just like his character from the film. And just like his soldiers from the films, the stars also respond with all their might, “High, Sir!” They also chant ‘Jai Hind’ and when Vicky asks when Uri is releasing, they say “Tomorrow!"</p>

'Cheat India' title changed after CBFC objection

<p>Actor Ranveer Singh, who is seen as a street rapper in his upcoming film 'Gully Boy', says he was born to do the coming-of-age musical film.</p>

<p>Ranveer spoke at the trailer launch of&nbsp;'Gully Boy' along with his co-star Alia Bhatt, the film's director Zoya Akhtar and producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani in Mumbai on Wednesday.</p>

<p>In the film, the actor plays the role of a street rapper who dreams big.</p>

<p>In real life, Ranveer Singh has had a brush with rapping himself. He did a bit of rapping in the title track of his second film 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl'.</p>

<p>"When somebody told me about the script of 'Gully Boy', I told them that it is my film. If any other actor would have been a part of this film instead of me then I would have got burnt with jealousy. I was born to do `Gully Boy` and I knew only I can pull off this character."</p>

<p>Ranveer said the movie is special for him for many reasons. "It's a coming together of too many things that are very dear to me. It has rap, hip-hop music which I loved since I was a kid and it is set in my motherland Mumbai."</p>

<p>While sharing his experience of working with the film's cast and crew, Ranveer said: "Working with Zoya (Akhtar) was an amazing experience. She is really more than a director to me. She is my friend and confidante. She is so special to me in my life as a person more than a director. This film's producer Ritesh is like family to me. We go way back and our parents go way back. Farhan (Akhtar) is a creative force of nature who I have tremendous admiration for. I have been fielding for him to direct me since eight years now. Hopefully, he will consider me someday. I really don't know what to say about Alia (Bhatt). I don't know how she happened to us. We are lucky that we have an actor like Alia Bhatt as a part of our cinema."</p>

<p>When Zoya was asked how she managed to work with Ranveer in the film, she said: "He is a method actor. If he has to rap for a day, then he will rap for the whole day.''</p>

<p>"When I was editing `Dil Dhadkne Do` in 2014, that time my editor Anand Subaya actually showed me a video of an artiste called Naezy who was like 21 years of age and he had put a song called `Aafat`. That`s the first time I saw a real and authentic rap what now is called as Gully Rap. It`s just stuck in my head and from that moment, till now, it`s just took me on a journey to make this film," says Zoya.</p>

<p>'Gully Boy' also features Vijay Raaz, Amruta Subhash and Siddhant Chaturvedi in key roles.</p>

<p>At times when I saw women whooping it up in Hollywood films, I felt they were copying us. Watching the eight stunning actresses of 'Ocean's 8', I felt a deep and prideful sense of déjà vu.</p>

<p>This could be our 'Veere Di Wedding' (VDW) girl gang divided by half. Firstly, our veeres are no less glamorous, articulate and self-assured than the 'Ocean's 8' girl gang. Secondly, they seem to address exactly the same issues of body-shaming, cat fights and pay parity.</p>

<p>Business as usual. But wait. The similarities are even more uncanny. During VDW, Kareena Kapoor Khan became a mother to the youngest superstar of India, Taimur Ali Khan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anne Hathaway, who played one of the veeres in 'Ocean's 8', also became a mother during her film's shooting. She has spoken about how she was body-shamed for her additional weight after motherhood until she reached the sets of her girl-gang film, where her co-stars came forward to make her feel complete and fulfilled by complimenting her on her glowing looks.</p>

<p>So guys, forget about cat fights. These veeres from Bollywood and Hollywood stand by one another. The whole mythology of women actors fighting their way through the shooting falls apart when we see the genuine bonhomie among the female actors of 'Ocean's 8' and VDW.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I saw the Australian actress Cate Blanchett, who plays one of the leads in 'Ocean's 8', telling one of her interviewers that the whole theory of women not getting along on the sets of a film was started by male journalists. It is meant to be some kind of a male turn-on to imagine female co-stars fighting.</p>

<p>Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania genuinely hit the 'ok' button in their togetherness. And that comes as a surprise to all those who were waiting to see fireworks among the actresses. Says Sonam, "Sorry to disappoint those who think we were slapping and scratching one another's faces. We really got along like a house on fire."</p>

<p>We really can't be blamed for thinking actresses can't get along when working together. Aeons ago, when Sharmila Tagore and Mala Sinha shared screen space in a 1960s film called 'Humsaya', there were stories of one actress slapping the other. Decades later, Sharmila was embroiled in another cold war with Raakhee Gulzar on the sets of Yash Chopra's 'Daag'.</p>

<p>Decades thereafter, it was Kareena Kapoor, eventually destined to be Sharmila Tagore's daughter-in-law, who got into a squabble with Bipasha Basu on the sets of 'Aitraaz'. Kareena ended up calling Bipasha a kali billi (black cat). Talk about a 'cat fight'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Seeing Kareena bond so effortlessly with her co-stars in 'Veere Di Wedding', I was reminded of her 'kali billi' catfight.</p>

<p>Yes, Kareena and the heroines have matured. Though I am not sure about Indian cinema.&nbsp;</p>

<p>2018 was an ideal year to be a female hero. First came Rani Mukherjee in 'Hichki', breaking all the myths about films that spotlight female heroes, especially those with disabilities.</p>

<p>Then came Alia Bhatt as a patriotic spy who creates havoc in her Pakistani in-laws' home in 'Raazi' to become the first female hero in five years with a Rs 100-crore box office earning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The trio of girl-power hits was completed with 'Veere Di Wedding'. And just when you think it can't get any better for women in Bollywood, there came Kajol in 'Eela Helicopter'. Though it didn't do well, it reminded us that Kajol remains a woman in a cabinet of men in the cinematic parliament.</p>

<p>Deepika Padukone commands a higher fee than her husband Ranveer Singh. And the show will continue in 2019, when Kangana Ranaut, who virtually sacked the director and appointed herself in his place in 'Manikarnika', shows us what women can do when given positions of power.&nbsp;<br />

<p>With the pressure of three-day box office performance worrying even the biggest of the stars, the producers and actors are looking beyond their core audience.&nbsp;<br />

2018 was a remarkable year in this regard as Akshay Kumar, the quintessential Bollywood hero, traded his charm to play a villain in a Rajinikanth film, which went beyond the southern audiences to woo the Hindi belt with its grand scale and visual effects.<br />

It all started with the 'Baahubali' franchise that reached its conclusion in 2017. SS Rajamouli's film had southern stars but such was its epic scale that it became a pan-Indian hit with its lead stars Prabhas, Anushka Shetty and Rana Daggubati becoming national stars.<br />

When it comes to making larger-than-life films Bollywood seems to have ceded ground to its southern counterparts, but the producers in Hindi cinema are waking up to the pan-India appeal of these stories.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Karan Johar was one of the early names to realise this potential and presented both 'Baahubali' and S Shankar-directed '2.0' in Hindi.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<br />
<br />
"The makers look for a right reason to release the film in other markets, besides their own. Like, '2.0' had Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar and producer Karan Johar so it was released in the Hindi region.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
"Even in the case of 'Baahubali', Karan was presenting it for the Hindi market, so it was released here. These films have done decent business in Hindi region," distributor Rajesh Thadani told PTI.<br />

Noted writer KV Vijayendra Prasad, Rajamouli's and the man behind 'Baahubali' and Salman Khan-starrer 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan', has written Kangana Ranaut's upcoming period drama 'Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi'.<br />

Prasad believes for a film to crossover, it needs to have the perfect balance of emotions and vision.<br />
<br />
"People are ready to see a film irrespective of who has made it and who is in it. This kind of response only encourages creative people. The film has set the bar in every which way and I am happy about that," Prasad told PTI.<br />

"A crossover film has to have the right content coupled with right emotions. It should be a big screen spectacle to draw an audience from different parts of the country to theatres," he added.&nbsp;This crossover is not just happening with southern films, Bollywood is also coming on board.<br />

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director known for his grand vision, had subtitles added to 'Padmaavat' for its release down south. The film did great business all over India despite or maybe because of the many controversies ahead of its release.<br />

"'Padmaavat' was a magnum opus. It had grandeur and a great story. It released in the southern markets, which is known for making visually appealing films. The film did decent business in south. Unfortunately, Aamir Khan-Amitabh Bachchan's 'Thugs...' did not fair well," Thadani said.&nbsp;<br />

Industry insiders believe this crossover trend of releasing films in different regions will only boost entertainment business and put Indian cinema on a global map.<br />
"From business perspective, it is a win-win situation. The highest film in the Hindi belt is a Telugu movie 'Baahubali' that was dubbed in Hindi," film exhibitor Akshay Rathi said.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<br />
Having an actor from a respective region opens up new possibilities for a film and the producers are suddenly realising that diversity is good for business.<br />
Richa Chadha and Pankaj Tripathi, both actors of repute in Hindi cinema, are starring in the Shakeela biopic, which marks the directorial debut of Indrajit Lankesh in Hindi.<br />
"We felt the story had to be told for a bigger audience from a greater stage. So we had to choose Hindi. We are bringing the audiences from the south and the north closer.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
"With Richa and Pankaj, we are taking a pan-India approach. We also have Malayalam actor Rajeev Pillai and Esther who has acted in Konkani, Mangalorean and Kannada films. We hope to bring India together," Lankesh had told PTI.<br />

Tripathi said, "Cinema is an art form that connects everyone. Emotions are same everywhere, we all want to be happy and enjoy and get lost in the world of films. Cinema knows no boundaries."&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<br />

Kannada actor Yash, whose 'KGF: Kolar Gold Fields' released last week, said there should be mutual respect for each other's work.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
"We should learn from each other and make our Indian film industry better. Every industry has their own USP and this crossover culture is a nice learning experience for all," Yash told PTI.&nbsp;<br />
His film has been presented by Farhan Akhtar in the Hindi market.&nbsp;<br />

"I think barriers are coming down every single day and the world is becoming a smaller place. We are enjoying work from (different) cultures and languages which we weren't familiar with many years ago," Farhan said.<br />

Similarly, 'Karwaan' saw Malayalam cinema star Dulquer Salmaan making his Hindi cinema debut, 'Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi' featured Punjabi singer-actor, Jassi Gill, while 'Helicopter Eela' had National Award-winning Bengali actor Riddhi Sen alongside Kajol.&nbsp;<br />

Tripathi and Huma Qureshi also featured in the Rajinikanth-starrer Tamil film 'Kaala', which won critical acclaim for its director Pa Ranjith's astute analysis of caste politics.<br />
The trend is only going to enjoy an upward swing in 2019 as Amitabh Bachchan will be making a guest appearance in Chiranjeevi's Telugu film 'Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy', Vidya Balan is the leading lady in NTR biopic, Shraddha Kapoor and Neil Nitin Mukesh will be seen in Telugu language film 'Saaho'.</p>

<p>Having spent over two decades in the industry, the singer has, time and again, called out issues with the status of singers and quality of music. And now, he has made another statement in that direction.</p>

<p>"Sometimes, I feel as if it would have been better if I were from Pakistan. At least I would get offers from India," he said while speaking to a news channel.</p>

<p>He went on to add "Nowadays, singers have to pay music companies for shows. If we don’t shell out the money, they will play songs sung by other singers and highlight them. Then, they will take money from them,"</p>

<p>However, this treatment is only meted out to the Indian singers, Sonu revealed, ''They don’t do the same with Pakistani singers. But then why single only Indian singers out? Atif Aslam is a very close friend of mine. He is never asked to pay to sing at shows, neither is Rahat Fateh Ali Khan," he said.</p>

<p>Sonu blamed this on the increasing number of remixes nowadays. "Earlier, composers, lyricists and singers created a song. Now, music companies have taken over that job," he said.</p>
