The long-delayed adaptation of The Jungle Book titled Mowgli is finally here and it’s darker than ever before. All previous films that we have seen on the same lines have always had a lighter tone to it, exploring broader themes of childhood fantasy, unlike this film that delves into a dark twist.

The trailer that came out on Tuesday is two-and-a-half minutes long. While the characters remain the same, the film promises to tell the other side of the story, as to why the jungle boy had to leave it and settle into a village life with humans, leaving all animals behind.

Even in the village, cruelty follows Mowgli as the men and women of the town consider him an outsider, banishing him from their area of residence.

The trailer looks eerily similar to another Warner Bros. film, The Legend of Tarzan

Mowgli has a star-lit cast as Christian Bale voices Bagheera, Benedict Cumberbatch plays Shere Khan and Cate Blanchett plays Kaa. Serkis, a veteran of motion capture acting, plays Baloo, while Rohan Chand plays Mowgli.

The film’s live-action cast includes Serkis’ Planet of the Apes co-star, Freida Pinto.

Mowgli is scheduled for release on October 19.
