Here is a good news for frenzy fans of Indian cinema. Indian cinema has been climbing ladders of success as well as is burgeoning with its stories representing chutnification of diverse notions, themes as well as languages to produce a masterpiece of wit and craftsmanship.

To recognise this diversification, Oxfam Best Film On Gender Equality Awards 2018 held annually at Jio Mami Mumbai film festival, has shortlisted many films from all across the centres of film industry.

As many as nine films have been included in this list such as 'Hamid', 'Imago' as well as 'Belakempa'.

These films deal with several themes including 'gender inequality', 'relationship woes', 'fatal diseases that are still looked down as something unacceptable', and others that offer a unique and distinct flavour of creativity based on social stigma.

The jury members have to keep in mind that the theme of the year is ' Gender equality and social stigma', and thus have to make a deliberate and careful attempt in selecting a winner.

On the award ceremony, Oxfam CEO said, "We are thrilled that this year the number of shortlisted films have increased from four films last year to nine. This is a reflection of the changing times in cinema industry worldwide. Stories that uphold a mirror to socio-political realities in India and that defy stereotypes of caste, class and gender are being made, accepted and appreciated. Women in films are making space to be heard both on and off-screen. The award is to appreciate, celebrate and support stories and people in the industry challenging the status quo. The shortlisted films are in different Indian languages--- Kannada, Marathi, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali and each film has an arresting narrative. It gives us great joy that last year's winner 'Village Rockstars' is this year India’s entry for the Oscars."

All nine stories that have been shortlisted bring home the idea of what ordeals an individual undergoes in a stereotypical society like ours where certain issues that actually need sympathy and care are unacceptable in our society.

'Hamid' is a story in Hindi that deals with a little boy who has somehow got God's number and tries to ring Him time and again to talk to his father, it is only in the end of the story that his call gets answered and two individuals unite. Thus, the theme oozes out feelings of nostalgia and sympathy amid viewers.

Meanwhile, the other Marathi genre, 'Imago', a Vikram Patil and Karan Chavan film, is another heart wrenching story of a teen girl, who suffers from leukoderma but suffers from grim crisis when she turns a victim of skin disease leaving her psychologically and physically ill.

'Jonaki' is another different story that sketches a story of a woman in her 80's who is in search of a true love, thereby lost in her own hay day memories when she enjoyed all the colours of love with her lover.

'Balekempa', 'Nathicharami', 'Light In The Room ( Ottamuri Velicham)', 'Sivaranjani And Two Other Women','Jaaon Kahan Bata Ae Dil', 'Soni' are other films that send shivers down your spine when watched by the audience.

The award ceremony will commence on November 1, 2018, which is also the last night of Jio Mami 20th Mumbai film festival with the Star.

For those who don't know, in 2017, Rima Das' Assamese film 'Village Rockstars' won the Oxfam Best Film on Gender Equality Award at MAMI and later bagged the National Award and is now India's official entry to the Oscars.

'Namaste England' actress Parineeti Chopra has spoken in support of Tanushree Dutta in the wake of the controversy surrounding her and Nana Patekar.

Parineeti spoke about women security and how urged women to speak up. "Honestly I really hope this is not the start of a #MeToo movement, because it would mean there are several such stories and I hope this is the first and the last story. If there are victims, especially women in the industry, actresses who have faced this, I want every woman to come out and speak. If they don't speak now, they will forever be suppressed. Personally, I've never gone through such an experience, if God forbid this happened with me I would have never kept quiet," she further added.

The star said that it's vital for women to feel secure in the industry.

"Keeping quiet is not the solution ever. This is something very serious which has happened to someone if it has happened. I'm not taking sides because I wasn't there. If it has happened, it's the worst thing that can happen to a woman", said Parineeti.

Arjun Kapoor, co-star of Parineeti in 'Namaste England' said that it was extremely important for people not to pass judgments but simply hear the actor's side.

"I have two sisters in this industry and two others working elsewhere. I hope every woman feels safe...This happens everywhere, it's the reality but one person gathered courage and decided to speak up. We need to understand that it's important to listen first."

"Problem is we start chaos and don't listen. That girl has spoken about something that's so dreaded... She deserves to be heard, before hurling judgments, taking sides, pointing fingers or asking if this will be a movement. You have to understand it first", said the actor.

He also said one must look at this situation accurately. "We are processing it now that this has happened... This issue happens across. We all need to introspect right now. We need to listen, understand, and make sure if there are more such stories, they should come out. Let's not make noise for the wrong reasons," he added.

We are quick to point fingers at others when things go wrong. The recent allegation made by actress Tanushree Dutta on veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment has not just opened a can of worms in Bollywood but also got everyone divided. While most of Bollywood is being criticised (and rightly so) for not taking a stand and maintaining a stoic silence over a matter that needs urgent attention, there is also a certain section which has been constantly doubting Tanushree Dutta’s intent tagging the entire episode as a publicity stunt.

The incident happened ten years back on the sets of ‘Horn Ok Pleasss’ – a film that had Patekar playing a lead role while Dutta was signed in for a special number. Dutta states that it was supposed to be a solo number and she had rehearsed for different steps prior to the actual day of the shoot. On the day of the shoot, Nana Patekar insisted on joining and suggested steps to her which made her uncomfortable. As she stormed out of the set and locked herself in the vanity van, Tanushree alleges that the producer, the actor and the director called goons from MNS to vandalize her car as she tried to leave the set with her parents.

10 years on, as Tanushree brought up the topic in context to the global #MeToo movement in a recent TV interview. Bollywood, in its true fashion, has decided to remain mum. Some of the prominent names of the film industry like Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan have evaded commenting on the issue. There are others like Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor who have come out in support of the actress and emphasised the importance to listen to her instead of questioning her intentions. And while Bollywood remains divided, the reactions from the common man have just highlighted the way our society functions.

Is it right to hold only the film industry accountable? Cases of sexual intimidation and harassment are not new to us. Neither is it just restricted to Bollywood. It is prevalent in workplaces and even homes. And it has always made us uncomfortable. Haven’t we all heard some serious cases of harassment and then brushed it under the carpet? So many such cases are never reported because of the fear of unpleasantness that comes along with it. So many times the victim is made to feel ashamed, questioned and cross-examined to an extent that he or she feels guilty and at fault.

I have heard of women leaving their secured job because of sexual intimidation from male colleagues. In most cases, they had complained to the HR but the company failed to take appropriate action and eventually it aggravated the problem making it difficult for them to work. In these cases, the companies failed the women.

Then there are horrid stories of abuse within families where a cousin or a relative would have made advances or even worse sexually exploited a child at a young age. In such cases, neither is the relative ostracised nor the victim. The victim is forced to co-exist with her offender. How are these cases any different from what Bollywood did to Tanushree?

We are all culprits and as a society, we all need to grow a spine.

Amitabh Bachchan’s reaction on the matter is exactly how most people would behave. Sure, the man could be a tad sensitive or used a bit of tact while addressing the matter- but Big B’s reaction resonates the way most of the society reacts to such cases. There is a general apathy towards victims. 'Since it doesn’t concern us, we won’t get involved in it' is a common form of reaction in such cases. Actor Shakti Kapoor even made a joke of the matter. When he was asked to comment on the issue, 66-year-old Kapoor cheekily said, "I don't know what happened 10 years ago, I was a kid back then." Laughing it off is perhaps the best way to evade the unpleasant question.

The fact that a young budding star with an abysmal body of work complained about an established National Award-winning actor also did not help the case. Tanushree Dutta was best known for her raunchy roles in films like 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' and 'Chocolate'- and had dared to take on an actor of Nana Patekar's stature- who has had a shining career in films for over two decades and spotless track record. It was easy to believe the man and not the girl - because she could be doing this for 'publicity'.

Outside of Bollywood too, men, especially those in power yield an unspoken tyrannical rule over others making their mistakes blur. The film industry is no different. Here misogyny is at its peak. What Tanushree went through is not new, scores of women, with aspirations in their heart, come to Bollywood to become a part of the glamour world and so many of them have to retract after going through similar experiences.

As Renuka Shahane rightly pointed out in a Facebook post, "Whose career did this incident affect? None of the men had a difficult time. Their ego had won! The men got all the support that any industry ( not just the film industry) gives to powerful men. The only person who was traumatized was Tanushree. The scars have still not healed. Please do the math."

Would Tanushree Dutta's case gain this big a momentum if Farhan Akhtar and other prominent celebrities hadn't tweeted in her support? I doubt most of the media houses would pick up the story had journalist Janice Sequeira not corroborated Tanushree's story.

We all, media included, pay attention to those in power. It is human nature to listen to the people who have substantial influence over the society. We always tend to overlook those who may not be that influential or who do not have a say in things or perhaps do not enjoy the financial backing.

Actress Raveena Tandon points out, "What defines harassment in a workplace? The fact that many industry wives/girlfriends are silent observers or instigators, when actor husbands destroy the actresses careers after the chase and flirtation is over, have them replaced with other potential targets?(sic)" Raveena had tweeted.

In a misogynistic society, women have to strive hard to make their voices heard. As a society, we need to listen. They may not be always speaking the truth, but that judgment can only be made after we hear all sides of the story. Turning a blind eye or keeping mum on grave issues will only encourage perpetrators more. Keeping mum on the matter will silence those who have been brave enough to share their horrific incidents. Let's not shun them, let's shun those who have tried to silence these brave individuals.
Please do the math." Would Tanushree Dutta's case gain this big a momentum if Farhan Akhtar and other prominent celebrities hadn't tweeted in her support? Tanushree Dutta harassment case: Why blame Bollywood alone? We are all culprits

A week back, actress and former Miss India Tanushree Dutta accused veteran actor Nana Patekar of harassing her on the sets of 'Horn OK Pleassss' back in 2008. The actress had walked out of a song shoot as she felt uncomfortable doing certain steps with Patekar. The actress had accused the actor and the film's producer Ganesh Acharya and director of the film of calling in MNS workers who went on to vandalise her car as she tried to leave the set.

While the actress did mention that the case had been registered back when the incident had occurred, no one took it seriously. Now the actual footage of the attack has resurfaced on the Internet.
The video shows Tanushree and her parents sitting inside their car, while goons vandalising the car's windscreen and blocking their way.

Naina from 'Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani' trends on film's fifth anniversary

With just a few hours left for the release of one of the biggest films of this season-'Veere Di Wedding'- actresses Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania seem to be at ease and quite assured with their film.

While many would have liked to term the female-buddy film as a chick flick, the lead actresses want to steer clear of such labels.

During a press interaction in New Delhi, both Sonam and Swara stated how the term itself is a “derogatory term for a woman”.

"The film explores the friendship between four people who happen to be women. The film shows that how women support each other and are confidantes of each other. I just want to ask that whenever a movie is made with women characters in the centre, why it is called a ‘woman empowerment film’?" pointed out Sonam, whose sister Rhea Kapoor is a co-producer of the film.

Swara Bhaskar also echoed friend Sonam's thoughts and said, "Basically a 'chick flick' is a strange category to put films in. Have we ever said that this film is a male-centric film or it is a ‘dude flick’? ' asked Bhasker who is known to be vocal about pertinent issues.

“A film is a comedy, romance, action. There is no separate genre for girls only”, said Swara and added, “Such categories are misleading also because our story is about friendship not about a single section of the society."

“I think boys can be friends and share the same vibe, a woman can only share the same vibe and this what we have shown in the film. Instead of labelling it, we should focus more on story, originality and on those parameters our film qualifies.”

The women felt that the society unnecessarily puts labels on women. " Why is the idea of drinking and abusing limited to guys only? Why we can’t we look ahead of the fact that when four women meet, they can also talk in the similar language," said Swara.

“We don’t want to be labelled, It is a film for women and men both," added Sonam. The film's being promoted on social media platforms as #IAmNotChickFlick

'Sandeep aur Pinky Faraar' gets a new release date

In her first ever magazine interview, Janhvi Kapoor opened up about why her mom Sridevi never wanted her to enter the film industry.

Janhvi, who turned cover girl for Vogue India`s June issue, was interviewed by filmmaker and mentor Karan Johar as he is the one launching her in Bollywood with ''Dhadak''.

The 21-year-old told Karan that Sridevi thought she wasn`t thick-skinned enough to survive in movies.

"She never wanted me to be an actress. She was more relaxed about Khushi getting into films. She thought I was naïve, that I wasn`t thick-skinned enough. She wanted us to live a more relaxed life. She loved what she did but you know it was intense," said Janhvi.

When the ''Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'' director asked if she feels a void that she does not have her mother to turn to, Janhvi said, "Of course. I could always be the baby with her. When I`d wake up, the first thing I`d do was ask for her. I`d need her to put me to sleep sometimes and she literally had to feed me.

"She added, "The day before she left for the wedding, I had to shoot, but I couldn`t sleep, so I was like, `I need you to come and put me to sleep.` But she was packing, so by the time she came to me I was half asleep. But I could feel her patting my head."

Janhvi further talked about how the untimely death of Sridevi has brought the four children of producer Boney Kapoor, Arjun, Anshula, Janhvi, and Khushi - together.

"It`s made us feel safe and secure. I think, even for Papa, it`s a source of comfort. It`s definitely tied us together. We`ve lost mom and I don`t think that`s a loss any of us will ever get over," she said.

"She added, "The day before she left for the wedding, I had to shoot, but I couldn`t sleep, so I was like, `I need you to come and put me to sleep.` But she was packing, so by the time she came to me I was half asleep. But I could feel her patting my head." Janhvi further talked about how the untimely death of Sridevi has brought the four children of producer Boney Kapoor, Arjun, Anshula, Janhvi, and Khushi - together. "It`s made us feel safe and secure. I think, even for Papa, it`s a source of comfort. It`s definitely tied us together. We`ve lost mom and I don`t think that`s a loss any of us will ever get over," she said.

My mom never wanted me to be an actress: Janhvi Kapoor

Khan recently revealed that he was offered the role of Sunil Dutt in the biopic, but he was more keen to play the lead role, which was already with Ranbir Kapoor.

When asked about this, Hirani said,?"Aamir is a friend and whenever I write a script, I narrate it to him to get a reaction. I had narrated this to him as well, not with the intention of casting him to play any role (but because) he reacts very interestingly to the script. Out of greed, I asked him if he would play Sunil Dutt's role."

The director said Aamir turned down the role but not without giving it some thought.

"He took it seriously and gave it a thought and said let's meet next week. When I met him, he showed me 'Dangal' and said 'I am already playing an older role, if my next film after this is again an older role, people will stop giving me young man's role', which was a valid argument," the director told reporters at the trailer launch of the biopic.

"Sometimes we used to sit with policemen, lawyers, family. We were in two minds whether to do it or not. So she is actually playing us, but not a filmmaker, a biographer," Hirani said.

Vogue India shared its gorgeous magazine cover on Instagram, a social media user commented on how Janhvi seems to be unaffected by Sridevi's death.

Janhvi Kapoor's first ever magazine cover may have been lauded by Bollywood but young actress has been receiving a lot of bad comments on social media. Kapoor has been trolled for posing for the magazine cover and designer Masaba Gupta has come to her rescue and defended the star kid. Masaba urged people to show some compassion towards her and appreciated Janhvi for keeping her head high and taking on a journey with grace despite her mother, Sridevi's demise. Sridevi had gone to Dubai in February this year to attend her relatives' wedding, where, in an accidental drowning she lost her life which left the Indian film fraternity in deep shock. Her eldest daughter Janhvi Kapoor is all set to make her big-budget Bollywood debut opposite Shahid Kapoor's brother Ishaan Khatter in Dharma Productions' 'Dhadak' which will be released in July. Ahead of her film's release Janhvi posed for the cover of Vogue magazine. This was her first cover shoot. A star is born!
